. new from overnight. for the first time, investigators say someone on that missing malaysia airlines plane deliberately changed the course. and now, the search expands to new area. a lot of new information we're getting overnight. good morning, everyone, i'm angie goff. >> welcome to news 4 today.

>> chuck bell is here with more on when we can expect some weather changes. meanwhile, looks like we have a nice saturday to start us off this weekend, chuck. >> absolutely right. good morning to both of you. and good saturday morning, everybody. welcome to your weekend. make your plans to get outside and enjoy a fine saturday. because clouds, rain drops and, yes, snowflakes. a real opportunity for those coming back as early as tomorrow night. early this morning, not much going on around town. a few lingering rain drops in far southern maryland and a couple of rain drops with a few snowflakes irn maryland. this is going to be drying up over the next couple of hours. our weather picture will be improving dramatically over the next little while. most of these rain drops and snowflakes will not make it east of i-81. hour by hour, temperatures out the door, weather this morning, upper 40s to near 50s. that's pleasant enough. highs today, generally up in the low, maybe even mid-60s with sunshine coming back, but, yes,

indeed. the chance, anyway, of seeing rain and more snow by tomorrow night. more on that in a couple more minutes. back to you. new developments this morning in the search for that missing malaysia airplane. the malaysian government is admitting for the first time the transponder was deliberately turned off. in a news conference this morning, the malaysian prime minister stopped short of saying the plane was hijacked. did say someone on board took deliberate action to turn off communication and steer the plane off course. new aircraft and satellite communication shows the plane kept flying five hours after takeoff. that's five hours after the plane lost touch with ground control. the boeing 777 departed for beijing with 239 people onboard. the investigation into what happened enters a new phase. >> in view of this latest development, the malaysian authorities have refocused their investigation into the crew and

passengers on board. >> search crews will now scour new areas for that missing jet. satellite data points to one of two corridors north of northern thailand or south from indonesia to the southern indian ocean. new this morning, d.c. police are looking into a shooting that has a road closed between new york avenue and t street in northeast. the shooting happened around 3:00 this morning. officers are still on the scene right now. they're telling us that this started as a police chase. no word on how many people are hurt or what led up to that chase. a baltimore police officer is recovering in the hospital today. the police sergeant has not been identified. he was off duty when he was shot in the torso near the intersection of bellaire road in the eastern district. the officer was following up on some leads when someone in the area opened fire. he was rushed to the hospital to have emergency surgery. now to a developing story out of alexandria. this morning, charles severance,

the man officers believe might be connected to the death of three people in the city. well, he's behind bars this morning in wheeling, west virginia. severance says he does not want to be extradited back to the commonwealth. alexandria police are not naming severance as a suspect. we're getting a clearer picture of who he was while he lived here in alexandria. severance ran for mayor as an independent in 1996 and again in 2000. people who knew him said he would talk about mental health thought was the subpar standards in the area. severance used to come to political events dressed in black and focused on that one issue. >> whether he asked a question about local community question or local neighborhood question, he would launch into mental health services to juveniles and the prescription of the drug. >> we found a website called

mentaldisorder.com and details his legal troubles over custody with his son and possessions of gun. law enforcement are still in the early stages of the investigation. mark seagraves has new information about what happened the day of the arrest. >> reporter: this is the library in wheeling, west virginia, where charles severance was arrested thursday afternoon. it's right across the street from the courthouse where he'll appear monday morning. people who came in contact say he didn't seem like he was a sf fugitive on the run. >> charles severance checking in on wednesday afternoon. the hotel clerk says he used his real name and credit card. >> he seemed like a nice guy when he came in. came in, talked about revolutionary war history. asked about where to go where ft. henry was at. >> used a maryland driver's license to check into the hotel. but the next day, thursday, a few blocks away at this library, he used a virginia i.d. to get access to this computer station.

that same morning, police here in wheeling got a call from the fbi and alexandria police to be on the lookout for severance. >> so we quickly went over to the hotel. we confirmed the vehicle was there, able to determine mr. severance was not there. and then based off the photograph, we began a search of our downtown area where we located mr. severance here downtown. >> after police arrested him, the fbi confiscated the hard drive and personal items he left behind at the library. they also searches his hotel room where they only found local maps and tourist brochures. they also impounded his car. severance appeared before a judge friday morning where he said he department want to be returned to virginia. now severance is scheduled to be back before a judge monday morning, this time for an extradition hearing. we can tell you in addition to local and state police and fbi, alexandria police are also here. in wheeling, west virginia, mark

marathon. the race kicking off in an hour and a half or so. runners will start at 14th street and constitution avenue northwest. they're going to end up at rfk stadium in southeast. all lanes on constitution avenue, rock creek and potomac parkways in northwest will be closed. you won't be able to use the southbound lanes of the arlington memorial bridge either. all streets along the race route will be closed between 7:30 this morning and 2:30 this afternoon. and because of the race, metro opened two hours early today. rail service started about an hour ago. if you are headed to the marathon, use the blue and orange lines. you can get off at the federal triangle or smithsonian stations. you can also take the green and yellow lines and get off at the archive station. >> if you're going to be taking metro at any time today, on the blue line, trains will be running 20 to 25 minutes at the springfield station. the green belt station will be closed on the green line because of track work there. trains will be running every ten
