9:00 am
i'm the owner of a company called michael and son services in washington, d.c. a little over 20 years ago, i took over a struggling family business when my father suddenly passed away. i was just 19 years old. i'm certainly experienced my fair share of financial struggles. but through hard work and determination, i'm running of the largest heating and cooling
9:01 am
companies in the country. i come across incredible heartbreaking stories. when they find out they have nowhere to turn in a time of need, that's when we come in to lend a helping hand. good morning. >> how did you get in my office, dude? >> door's unlooked. >> i thought we had this taken care of. you're not supposed to be in here. >> it's for a good reason. a good cause. >> what is it? >> if you can tolerate me for two minutes. >> let's go, buddy. >> i was in triangle yesterday. >> all right. >> i managed to get out of the office for a little while. >> uh-huh. >> and i met a family by the name -- the lloyd family and they have a son named elias. >> okay. i like that name so far.
9:02 am
keep going. >> the son suffers from something called status epilepsy, also has a condition that causes fluid to build up in his brain. and he's 23 years old, but he's confined to a wheelchair and basically has a brain function of a 2-year-old. and so their house which is in just a state of complete disrepair is just -- >> you got video of it? >> i do have video of the house. >> let's take a look. >> and i sent it to you. >> you did? >> yeah. >> what's your name again? >> shatty. >> sure it's not mr. bean? >> i'm positive. >> hold on here. oh, my god. what's going on with this brick? >> the earthquake caused that. >> it looks like the whole foundation's kind of going in. >> yeah. that's one of the triangle, virginia, i believe was one of the places that got hit worse by the earthquake. and looks like their home was at the center. the foundation is -- the house looks like it's leaning in. and all the bricks are coming
9:03 am
off. and not to mention a tornado came through there a couple weeks ago. >> look at those window units, man. okay. whoa. >> yeah. >> i think there might be an issue with the roof, as well. i see the whole thing's opened up with no gutters or anything else. >> that's what i noticed there, as well. just when i glance at it, looked like they had serious problems. >> here's what i'll do, it's a lot of work in this house and probably a little more than what i can do, but what i want to do is this, get eddie over here and, hold on, let me get eddie here. hold on. >> yes, sir? >> ralphie? >> yes, sir. >> get your butt over here. >> chop chop. >> yes, sir. >> ralphie. how you doing? >> good. >> you doing good? >> yes, sir. >> come closer, eddie. i'm not going to bite you. there's this lady, she's got this kid named elias and
9:04 am
basically the kid is in a bad situation. he's got the mind of a 2-year-old. he's had status epilepsy. i guess he had brain blockage which makes him act like a 2-year-old. >> fluid that builds up in his brain. >> and he doesn't walk and doesn't talk. >> nope. his mother has to do everything for him. >> so can you send someone there, please, to take a look at him and see what's involved in putting an hvac system in there? >> yeah. >> when is it going to happen? >> i'll get somebody out there today. >> that's why i love you. who loves you? >> you do. >> get the hell out of here. >> yes, sir. >> this is shaddy. >> get your butt over here. >> i'll be there in a second. >> thanks. >> come on. get in here. >> yes, sir? >> i just finished speaking to neil. it's a lot bigger and a lot more than just a heat system. >> really? >> way bigger. >> okay. >> he said there's probably
9:05 am
issues with the roof. >> oh. >> and he said a lot of the windows were drafty and causing a lot of issues. even if we the did fix the unit, they would have issues with the house. >> what i want you to do is this, my friend bill from virginia roofing and, call up mark who is the son of vinyl light in morton, virginia. call them and get them to help us. they've done things for me in the past, they're good guys, see if i can get a new roof and gutters from virginia and some new windows from vinyl. >> okay. >> okay? >> sounds good. >> and also, call and get him to go and get his guys out there to fix the brick. it sounds like we're going to need to do a lot more than just -- there's no way in the world i can just put a unit on these people and walk away. i feel terrible. let's just do it, all right? >> all right. i'll make the calls. >> thank you, sir. >> thanks.
9:06 am
>> i'm just overwhelmed my husband died two years ago. and i was just left with a lot of things that you don't think you're going to be left with. and that's why we're all here today, and a lot of good people are helping me. >> the helping hands show is a show that we produce that documents the work that michael & son does through the michael & son cares program. we help families with essential home repairs they otherwise could not afford. >> her main thing was no air-conditioning or heat. but when i saw all of the other things like that the gutters are falling out and rain and water in the house and potentially leading to mold and mildew that the brick in the front had
9:07 am
fallen off because of the earthquake. i said, you know what, i've got to do more than just the air conditioners. >> we appreciate michael & sons for including us in the helping hands project. we're able to come out here and roll up our sleeves and help mrs. lloyd out. she's, from what i understand, had rough hardships. >> my name is delores lloyd and this is my son elias lloyd, he's 22 years old. >> always looking for ways to give back to the community. and it's an opportunity for us to do that. we're happy to be here. and thanks to the roof center for donating the shingles and
9:08 am
action sheet metal for providing the gutter. and it's just a win/win for all of us. >> i've always been inspired by that movie "pay it forward." you know, it's a movie about a kid who decides if he can do three random acts of kindness for three people that he can maybe change the world. and so that type of thing inspired me to, like, you know what, if i can do something nice for somebody, maybe it can change the world.
9:09 am
elias was born with a lot of problems. probably had 40 revisions and you can see all the scars. and poor little guy. he was born with a blockage in his brain. he was born cerebellum displasia. he's like a 16 months old baby up to maybe 4 or 5 years depending upon what he's trying to do. he takes 24-hour care.
9:10 am
he doesn't speak. he doesn't walk. he's wheelchair bound. i have to carry him. to put him in his wheelchair. he's still in pampers. just a 24-hour job. i feed him every day. i bathe him. 24 hours around the clock. >> how did your husband pass? >> a massive heart attack. >> hold was he? >> 53. >> my father died from a massive heart attack. my father died at the age of 47. >> oh, my gosh. >> and your son elias is my general manager's name. >> that's what i heard. i was like i can't believe that. >> that's my general manager's name. >> it's actually my -- both of my grandfathers' name, as well. my father's father's name was elias and my mother's father's name was elas. i already had special connection to it.
9:11 am
>> i was very happy today, i was out working on another job. my manager called me up and asked me if i would be interested in helping out. i said not a problem, whatever you need. it's very important to me to give back. >> i think it's important to help each other and this where you supposed to help others and, you know, it's just the thing that the humans do. >> well, we actually received a call from michael & sons asking us to participate. and being a family owned and operated company, the community has been important to us. so we give back when we can. >> well, today, we're replacing the shingles. we're putting 50-year shingles on the house. we're replacing some of the rotten wood. and we're going to get it dry. >> we had recently done a project for a family just a couple of minutes from
9:12 am
so how we got with helping hands was we're involved with a program called acts of kindness in richmond. and
