right now at 6:00, maryland has a winner. news4 live as the entire state waits to find out where a winning mega millions jackpot ticket was sold. we hope it hear from someone who will -- who works in this building this morning. here are the winning numbers. we'll share them with you several times this morning. if you don't have a pen handy, they are -- 11-19-24-33-51, the mega ball is 7. and we'll have much more on the winning ticket in just minutes. right now, i want to to go to storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein keeping an eye on a chance for wintry weather. tom? good morning. yesterday i said our temperatures would stay above freezing overnight. and they have. but it is still quite chilly. we're in the mid to upper 30s in washington. and in alexandria, arlington, falls church. much of montgomery county, low

to mid 30s. above freezing, mid 30s in prince george's county, much of fairfax county, all across northern virginia. shenandoah valley, around the bay, it is above freezing in the mid 30s. storm team 4 radar showing scattered sprinkles of light rain in southern virginia. now getting just west of fredericksburg and up in some of the higher elevations. farther to the north and west. that is where there is a possibility of a little bit of light icing. these are temperatures by late morning and around noontime. that's when there could still be a little light icing occurring along the blue ridge. and perhaps along catoctin mountain. otherwise, the rest of the area will stay above freezing. rain arriving later today. a look at the timing on that, next weather & traffic on the 1s at 6:11. danella, how are we rolling this morning? well, on 66, tom, rolling without any delays. we'll head out there now. waking up in haymarket, no delays just yet. as you continue toward the bypass, again, no delays yet. here's the live look at fairfax county parkway. i'll give you a drive time.

later on today. right now, they're still working on notifying those retailers, let them know that they sold one of the lucky tickets and actually, whoever sold the ticket, gets a nice prize, as well. but two winners were sold in maryland. one of them was for that big jackpot last night. the $400 million. that will have to be split with another winner in florida. there was also a $1 million ticket sold in maryland, as well. we've got two winners. mega millions has been really lucky here for the state of maryland. they have told winning tickets before. in fact, it was about this time two years ago that three people split a mega millions jackpot here. that ticket was sold in the baltimore area. so a lucky streak here for maryland when it comes to mega millions. this was one of the bigger jackpots for the mega millions lottery. the third largest in the lottery's history. so what's happening today is that the retailers will be notified. that should happen this morning. we may actually never know who

alexandria murder heads back to court today. charles severance will appear in a west virginia courtroom this afternoon. he's being held on weapons charges out of loudoun county right now, and he's fighting extradition back to virginia. prosecutors say they've connected severance to the murder of nancy dunning, ron kirby, and ruthanne lodato. police have not charged him for the crimes. a hearing set for today in the retrial of a northern virginia man who had been convicted of capital murder. a judge overturned justin wolfe's conviction in 2011. he says prosecutors withheld or ignored evidence that could have helped wolfe's defense. prosecutors are now retrying him. they say wolfe was a drug dealer who hired a member of his drug ring to kill a marijuana supplier. it is 6:05. molette green is following breaking news from the live desk. molette? >> we just got new information on the pilot of the missing malaysia jetliner that has investigators very curious this morning. we just learned that files were recently deleted from a flight simulator found at his home. now a news conference just ended

a few minutes ago. and investigators say they are trying to figure out what information was on those deleted files. we've also learned that background checks on all but three passengers are still pending. and those passengers are said to be ukraine and russian nationals. that's the latest. back to you. >> thank you. concerns about retaliation this morning after police shot a murder suspect in northwest washington. law enforcement sources tell news4 that police officers are being warned about possible retaliation. an officer with the capital area fugitive task force shot and killed 19-year-old da'quan hendricks yesterday. police say the officer opened fire after hendricks shot at them. police were trying to arrest him in connection with a murder in northeast last month. a former dmv worker in arlington has pled dpilty to accepting more than $11,000 in bribes. 33-year-old francisco samayoya

hernandez worked as a tax supervisor at the arlington dmv. at a plea hearing, he admitted to taking bribes from a vehicle exporter. in exchange, he filed false paperwork and helped the exporter avoid nearly $25 no registration fees. he faces up to ten years in prison when he is sentenced in june. new this morning, a billion-dollar bill for toyota. the changes on top of the money toyota says it's making because of how it's handled customer complaints. plus, you may have heard dark chocolate is good for you. now we're learning exactly how it helps. and it's a cold morning so far. rain is on the way.

a person's genetic make-up may magnify the effects of a bad diet. people most at risk for obesity should monitor how much fried food they eat. now that doesn't mean people with different genes, better gene, can eat whatever you want. researchers say everybody needs to eat a healthy, well-balanced meal. they studied the eating habits of more than 37,000 men and women. if you're a chocolate lover like me, you'll like this story. scientists say they've solved the mystery why dark chocolate is so good for you. researchers at lsu say the compounds in chocolate are absorbed by so-called good bacteria in the stomach. these microbes then grow and ferment, producing anti-inflammatory compounds. which these compounds are absorbed by the body, they reduce inflammation of cardiovascular tissue and decrease the risk of long-term stroke. scientists say combining dark chocolate with solid fruit like pomegranates and acaii could provide greater health benefit. i don't need a reason to eat

back at the live desk, breaking news from laurel. there you see chopper 4 over the scene of a house fire in laurel. this is happening at brock bridge road and laurel ft. meade road, 198. this is very close to maryland city elementary school, to give you a better idea. we can't see any flames, but we have seen the firefighters using their ladder truck, working the scene here in laurel. no word yet on whether anybody was home or if there are any injuries here. we'll stay on top of it. back to you. >> thank you. 6:17. a live look now at the maryland lottery headquarters in baltimore right now. we're waiting to hear where a winning $400 million mega millions ticket was sold in the state of maryland yesterday. we do know that two winning tickets were sold. and we know the second winning ticket was sold in the state of florida. a live look now at the sunoco gas station in merit island, that is south of cape canaveral.

somebody doing an interview there obviously. florida the most recent state to start playing mega millions. the winning numbers -- 11-19-24-33-51, the mega ball was 7. the numbers on nbcwashington.com. investigators trying to determine what caused a house fire that forced a mother with her 1-year-old boy to jump out of a burning window. the woman escaped from the second floor with her son in her arms. she broke her ankle and burned her face. the fire started on the first floor of the house on 63rd street in seat pleasant yesterday afternoon. john rhodes rents the home with relatives and friends. >> i'm just glad she was smart enough to get them out. >> it took a good ten minutes to put out. it was heavy. >> five people including teenagers inside the home escaped. the mother suffered second-degree burns. the 1-year-old is okay. the maryland man accused of killing a woman and abducting

their daughter will remain in jail until he stands trial. timothy vertz waived his right to attend a bail hearing. a judge granted prosecutors' request to hold him without bail. police say vertz stabbed bobbi jo cortez in her baltimore area home earlier this month. he then skipped down with their 11-year-old daughter. police found them two days later at a motel in south carolina. right now a blood spatter expert is on the stand in the oscar pistorius murder trial. earlier today, a police ballistics expert testified that pistorius' girlfriend was standing in the bathroom when she was hit in the right hip by the first of four bullets fired by the athlete. pistorius says he killed reeva steenkamp by mistake thinking she was an intruder in his house. prosecutors argued he killed her intentionally after an argument. still plenty of questions this morning about what caused a news helicopter to go down in a busy downtown seattle area. the crash happened shortly after the chopper refueled at the helipad near the space needle yesterday. the two crew members on board

died. the ntsb on scene investigating what may have caused that crash. seattle also reviewing its helipad regulations. the city does not track where or how many helipads there are. but it's not clear whether those regulations had anything to do with yesterday's crash. new this morning, the white house announced it will unveil its plan to fight climate change. environmental groups will also meet with the obama administration to discuss the issue. that meeting will focus on new technology and strategies to make us less dependent on carbon-based energy. the justice department finally reached a deal with toyota over acceleration problems. tracie potts has more from capitol hill. >> reporter: breaking news overnight at least from toyota. they've spoken out on what we hear will be a formal deal announced later today between the government and toyota over those rapid acceleration cases, stuck acceleration pedals that became so dangerous for so many

people. looks like the justice department has worked this out for toyota to pay $1 billion and avoid prosecution in this settlement. the fbi had been investigating whether or not toyota intentionally misled regulators, safety regulators about the acceleration problems and complaint. in a statement, toyota says they've cooperated with the u.s. attorney's office for more than four years. they've made fundamental changes to become a more responsive and customer-focused organization, and they're committed to continued improvement. that's the l.a. we await formal news today. back to you. >> that's tracie potts reporting from capitol hill. 6:219 time now. weather & traffic on the 1s. here's tom. >> good morning. we stayed above freezing overnig overnight. snow continues to melt. we're only 30 hours away from spring equinox. spring starts, one day away as

so as you follow 50 inbound, are you expecting just a small delay, under a mile. again, just be aware and slow down while police are getting you by the accident in the roadway there. we'll head up to bw parkway. tracking southbound delays near 175. back in ten minutes with a live look from chopper 4. over to you. >> thank you. dramatic dash cam video shows a truck tearing into an accident scene on the side of an iowa highway. police say a tractor-trailer actually rear-ended the truck, sending it flying off the road. such a close call. no officers were injured, though. the man in the truck was taken to the hospital but is expected to be fine. new this morning, there have been at least two incidents of crimea's self-defense forces storming ukrainian military facilities in the past few hours. news4's molette green has more on that from the live desk. we just got some video in to show you. russian flags just placed this morning at that naval base in crimea. this happened after those security forces, as you said,

stormed ukraine's navy headquarters. now we're getting reports of ukrainian service men leaving that base, carrying their uniform on coat haters with b g belongings in plastic bags. this as joe biden meets with lithuania's leader. this is video in of the talks of leaders whose countries border russia. back to you. 6:25. a michigan community is criticizing a teacher for a history lesson on colonial time. school administrators at linden school say the teacher gave her fifth grade class a taste of o'doul's nonalcoholic beer. it does contown trace amounts of alcohol -- contain trace amounts of alcohol. the teacher said the students had a small taste of what pilgrims drank for sanitation reasons. parents were not old until eight days after it happened. >> anything like that, you want to be involved in. that should have been decided with the parents and

administration previous as to whether this should go forward or not. >> the superintendent there is calling it an honest mistake. police are not taking any legal action. this next story is for anyone planning a wedding -- always read the fine print on your contract. >> that's because some vendors are now suing newlyweds for bad reviews. according to the "huffington post," a growing number of wedding vendors are adding special clauses to their contracts that keep couples from posting any negative reviews on line. the website cited one anonymous virginia bride who recently blogged about a certified letter she received from a vendor threatening her with a defamation lawsuit for up to $350,000. his no idea they could do this. >> i just bought something and had to to sign something that said i wouldn't write anything negative about the merchapt. >> how are you -- merchant. >> how are you supposed it get information from other customers? >> true. new information on taxes in d.c. how it could become harder for

department trial board. she's been on administrative leave since medrick mills died of a heart attack in january across the street from a fire station. his family tried to get help from firefighters, but no one responded. the trial board will determine if davis will be punished. we'll also find out how long albrecht muth will spend in prison. he was convicted of killing his elderly wife inside the couple's georgetown home more than 2 opinion 5 years ago. prosecutors say muth was violent and wanted his wife's money. his defense team said the case against him was circumstantial. he could receive life in prison without parole. teenagers in northern virginia are coming together after the untimely deaths two of woodson high school classmates. they died just a few days apart last month. police have ruled out foul play in both cases. in the past four years, 7 woodson students have died. all are suspected to have committed suicide.

last night students healthed on the football field and made a paper chain to represent those lost. they said they wanted to form a sense of unity. >> remember there are many people you can reach out whenever you need, and it does get better. >> one of our counselors put it best -- we have to find normalcy in an abnormal situation. >> fairfax county police say there have been 19 windows in the county soer -- winds in the county this year, 15 involving teenagers. new information on the progress on the new i-95 express lanes in northern virginia. six electronic devices are already in place over existing hov lanes. that includes e-zpass readers and cameras. the first toll gantries have also been installed on opinion. those are the sensor holders that span the highway. crews will install 24 more in the coming months. the express lanes are supposed to open early next year. we now know more information about a story we brought you first on 4. ddot now says a vandal damaged 750 trees in the bloomsdale and

truckston circle neighborhoods in the district. much bigger than first thought. investigators tell us some of the smaller trees may die. the deep holes could also cause larger trees to develop dangerous cracks. tree specialists are keeping an eye on the damage. police arrested a man last week in connection with carving holes in the trees. in northern virginia, one community is starting an online social movement to bring a popular grocery store to their neighborhood. people in fredericksburg want trader's joe's to open a store there. they've created a facebook page to do just that. it's already had nearly 2,500 likes in a couple of days. the store tops a list of businesses not currently in the area. we did check. none of the trader joe's under construction are coming soon to anywhere in virginia. new this morning, d.c. under scrutiny for how it's managed a $6.2 million education grant. that's according to the "washington post." the district and 11 states received the race to the top

grants in 2009 and 2010. the u.s. department of education has placed a hold on the grant here in d.c. that money is supposed to be used to improve eight persistently low achieving schools. federal officials say local education officials must seek explicit federal approval before spending those funds. in the day ahead, first lady michelle obama will head overseas to china. mrs. obama will meet with the first lady of china to focus on education. the two will talk to american and chinese university students. mrs. obama will also bring along her daughters as well as her mother, marian robinson. they will travel to several chinese cities including beijing this their week-long trip. a d.c. council committee could vote today on a plan to protect homeowners who have fallen behind on their taxes. the legislation would ban the city from selling liens on homes whose owners owe less than $2,500. homeowners when owe less than $7,500 would get an additional year to pay before liens were sold. homeowners who lose their homes

the head of montgomery county's nonemergency phone number says she'll make sure you get a faster response when you call, according to the "washington post." if you called mc 311 during last month's big snowstorm, you probably had to wait on hold for more than half an hour. most callers hung up because of the long wait. the service's director blame the problem on servers which weren't in sync with the phone system.

from the $400 million jackpot. news4's richard jordan is at lottery headquarters with what we've learned overnight. richard? >> reporter: guys, this is the maryland lottery headquarters here in baltimore. and they are preparing to notify that retailer, whoever sold the ticket, to let them know that they did sell one of the winning tickets. there were two ticket that won here in maryland. so maryland pretty luck when he it comes to mega millions. the first was for the big jackpot, the $400 million. the winner is going to have to split the prize with another winner in florida. then the second maryland winner won $1 million. the second lottery ticket here was $1 million cash prize. two big winners in maryland. one winning a million, and one winning well over a million. we're waiting to find out where the tickets were sold. it has been a lucky streak here for maryland. it was two years ago just about this time that they also had a mega millions winner.

northwest washington. law enforcement sources tell news4 that police officers are being warned about the possible retaliation. an officer with the capital area fugitive task force shot and killed 19-year-old da'quan hendricks yesterday. police say the officer opened fire after hendricks shot at them. police were trying to arrest him in connection with a murder in northeast last month. d.c. mayor gray is getting an januaendorsement. he says a group is oversan ysidro -- overshadowing his accomplishments. the senate will consider a bill to raise the minimum wage to $10.10. in a house version the rate wouldn't reach $10.10 until 2017. it wouldn't be tied to inflation in the future either. we are learning new details about the pilot of the missing malaysia airlines plane.
