right now at 6:00, cold temperatures grip our area again. it is below freezing for most of you. the wind is starting to pick up. you'll want to put on the layers if you're about to head out. we are already seeing a lot of black ice this morning on the roadways. the traffic team keeping track of several crashes. the potential for black ice, the reason for a number of school delays. most in virginia, culpeper, page, rappahannock, and spotsylvania opening two hours late. frederick county schools opening one hour late. delays, as well, for two hours in warren and orange counties. the town of colonial beach

public schools also delayed two hours today. in maryland, allegheny county schools will open two hours late. remember, we have a complete list of delays constantly updating on the bottom of the screen there. and as well on nbcwashington.com. 6:01. meteorologist tom kierein will help you get out the door. to tom? >> the snow we got yesterday melted a bit, put water roads, streets, and sidewalks, that's frozen up. road temperatures on 95 south of washington, springfield to fredericksburg around 30 degrees. temperatures on 66, washington to front royal, only in the upper 20s. road temperature, the beltway road temperatures only in the upper 20s. so is 95 from the beltway to baltimore. 70 west of baltimore, 270 from the beltway all the way to frederick. road temperatures there are just in the mid 20s. and in the mid to upper 20s, road temperatures i-70 to hagerstown and 81, so watch out for patchy ice. it's going to be with us for another couple of hours.

accident on i-95. back to you. >> thank you. 6:02. today a manassas daycare director heads to court to face child abuse charges. she runs the smile preschool. she's accused of abusing a 5 and 6-year-old in february. the preschool was shut down this month after she learned she didn't have a proper license to run the facility. an attorney says she's conting fully with police -- she's cooperating fully with police and believes they misinterpreted what happened. our reporter will be at the a navy this morning. football player who suddenly collapsed last weekend has died. 19-year-old will mccammie clapped at practice on saturday. he'd been in a coma in the hospital since then. it is still not clear what caused will to collapse. video showed that he didn't take any hard hits during that practice. will had been cleared recently to start playing again this year after suffering a head injury playing high school football in 2012. we're looking at 6:03. we're also learning a sailor killed at a navy base in norfolk

may have connections to our region. the sailor's father told our sister station there his son is from the maryland/d.c. area. the navy has yet to confirm his identi identity. he died yesterday when a civilian walked on to the uss hahn" and took a weapon. the sailor responded was there to help. the man killed the civilian. he did have authorization to be on the base. now to the search for the missing 8-year-old girl from d.c. today marks exactly one month since relisha rudd disappeared. she was last seen in this video that shows her with 51-year-old kalil tatum. this was on february 26 th at te holiday in dinexpress in southe. the next day tatum's wife, andrea, was found dead in an oxon hill motel. tate sum wanted for that murder and is -- tatum is wanted for

that murder and is considered armed and dangerous. there's a $50,000 reward for information about the death and missing girl. four minutes after the hour. we'll be following d.c. mayor vincent gray today, six days before the democratic primary in the race for mayor. we'll have a reporter at st. elizabeth's hospital. we expect the mayor to announce he's replacing united medical center with a new hospital at st. elizabeth's. umc is the only full-service hospital east of the anacostia river. new poll numbers show that gray is in a fight to keep his job. he trails council member muriel bowser by two percentage points in the latest nbc 4/marist poll. that's within the margin of error. he led bowser by 8% last month. neither says they're surprised by the numbers. >> it's a virtual dead heat. i think it's kind of what we expected. >> we've seen over the last several weeks a growing energy around our campaign and what we're doing. >> whoever wins the democratic primary will probably face d.c.

william parkway, i-95, earlier accident to the left shoulder lane. aaron was talking about delays crossing the 14th street bridge. that's because of an accident. i'm back in ten minutes. i'll give you details on that. 6:11. we now know the healthiest places to live here. researchers at the robert wood johnson foundation, they broke down the healthiest spots by the county. in maryland, the top place for good health belongs to montgomery county followed by howard and frederick counties. in virginia, loudoun, fairfax, arlington counties are at the top of the list. the report looked at 29 things including smoking, graduation rates, and unemployment, along with access to healthy foods and physical activity rates. if you feel nervous going to the doctor, you're not alone. a new study out of england says your blood pressure is much higher if a doctor takes it instead of a nurse. that can lead to a false positive. that can be a false positive and lead to unnecessary treatment for problems like hypertension.

satellite that could narrow the search area. we've been watching a news conference from malaysia. it ended a few minutes ago. we learn good new satellite images taken three days ago in an area cover being 154 square miles. -- covering about 154 square miles. some are bright indicating they could be solid materials and range from three feet up to 69 feet. three to 6 feet. 12 planes including one from the u.s. navy are flying over the area looking for any debris to link it to flight 370. we'll keep you posted. check in with nbcwashington.com for the latest. >> thanks. the first step toward a potential multimillion dollar lawsuit against malaysia airlines has been out of chicago. a law firm filed court documents monday that demand malaysia airlines and boeing turn over evidence of a possible design

and manufacturing defect that may have caused the plane to plunge into the indian ocean. a spokesman for boeing told nbc news the company has no no comment now. a representative for malaysia airlines could not be reached. 6:17. two men in custody for a shooting near an anne arundel elementary school. police say cory jamel barnes iii and avon marvin jackson shot two people in a park near the school in brooklyn park friday. kids were playing outside when the shots rang out. none were hurt. school was put on lockdown. police think the shooting was drug related. both victims should survive. someone facing criminal charges, too. the driver of a cement truck managed to walk away from this crash in the hollywood hills. unbelievable. look at this -- driver was traveling on a road that suddenly crumbled beneath the truck. is t sent the truck down the side of the mountain. the driver was trapped again the hillside. somehow he climbed up out of the other side of the cab without the help of firefighters.

>> wow. 6:18. people in new england waking up to blizzard conditions. jim cantore is live in cape cod trying to hold on in massachusetts. i know it when you show up somewhere, it's got to be bad. looks like you're getting crushed. >> reporter: yeah, this is the worst storm of the season for the cape. it happens a few days before april 1st. thank you for little, right? this is incredible, guys. we're getting hammered. yesterday the wave action was like glass. with winds gusting almost at 50 miles per hour, it's not there yet, temperatures in the 30s. low 30s, windchills in the 20s. it is brutal. i'll walk down this plank for a second because there's so much spray coming up. i wanted you to see on this piling how the snow is taped on horizontal. you see how much weight action is pushing the piling up and

down. it's caked on here. the wind sustained at 35 miles per hour. the tide is coming in. we'll see especially in the north facing beaches overwash here. the big concern for the cape and islands is the power outages. can you imagine -- this is going to go on all day long. we haven't seen the worst yet. in terms of the snow, we think they'll get heavier and winds stronger than they are now. if you look up here, you can certainly see how how horizontal the snow is. a brutal day on cape cod where we normally average about five inches of snow in month of march total. we'll probably get from five to ten inches out of this one storm. i'll tell you, this is the fourth, fourth blizzard warning of the season for cape cod. if there's anybody ready for this to be over, it is the folks on the cape.

baby, that hurts. >> we hear you. jim cantore showing how treacherous the conditions are. wow, be careful. >> for sure. tom, we're sort of dealing with the backdraft of that storm, if you will. windy conditions today? >> yeah, winds are beginning to pick up in the weather center. i've been closely anlizing, this -- analyzing, this is the latest slight lap showing the storm southeast of where jim is located. here are the latest gusts. in the last few minutes, we've had gusts to around 30 miles per hour. manassas had a gust to 30. reagan national, 23. these gusts are around 20 to 30 miles per hour. that will increase as we get into the afternoon. these gusts causing windchills also with temperatures hovering in the 20s. our windchills are just in the teens this morning. in addition, we've got the water from yesterday's snow that melted on roads. now frozen up. we've got patchy ice. if it looks wet, in fact, that is ice. we've had multiple accidents due to patchy ice. all this red zone, much of

marlboro. westbound central avenue, this crash here fatal. single vehicle. police are saying it is a result of black ice. and your westbound lanes still blocked at enterprise road. so heads up in this area. the other thing i'm watching, a new accident. this is on 66 eastbound heading toward the beltway. the crash tying up the right shoulder lane. traveling eastbound to the beltway, just a bit slow from fairfax county parkway. under speed at 42 miles per hour. you should slow down today and give yourself extra time. it is still slick out. over to the 14th street bridge, we spoke with police, and police could not confirm exactly what lanes are blocked. lanes are blocked traveling across the 14th street bridge because of an earlier accident. that's why as you make the commute you are seeing heavier delays than you normally would at this time. but traveling on 395 itself, from the beltway, pretty clear. but getting closer to the 14th street bridge, angie, that's where folks are hitting the brakes. back to you. >> thank you. right now, 6:23. and as unlikely as snow is this

time of year, same situation when it comes to a dust storm for people in arizona. take a look at that. a huge duflt storm cast phoenix into a -- dust storm cast phoenix into a shadow yesterday. it creates that wall of gray. this is worse than fog. if you get stuck in this, you're not going to be able to see through. it the storm stirred up because of the 45 mile-per-hour winds that kicked up desert dirt into the air. it all mixed together, and it -- as you can imagine, it led to car crashes. today they are expecting much clearer skies in the forecast. 6:24. students in gaithersburg received the top prize for creating awareness about teen dating violence. >> after i cried, he would say, "i love you," and make me forget everything that happened. >> three students at watkins mill high school received first place for their public service announcement called "control." it's part of the choose respect campaign. the u.s. department of health and human services says as many as one in three teens will experience dating violence.

and then he talked little bit more about the situation. tonight in brussels, he's scheduled to give a big speech tonight their time, that will be a little after lunchtime here. the president's expected to give a big speech where he talks more about the big picture of what's happening in ukraine. the u.s. and the europeans working together not only to we'll do russia and its push into ukraine but as the white house tells us, other international threats, too, like iran, like syria. that's expected to be his focus as he gives that speech in brussels tonight. angie? >> thank you. just about 6:34 now. deputies in loudoun county looking for a group of men who sexually assaulted a woman. four men approached her monday afternoon on greenfield court. that's in sterling. she was walking her dog. the woman told detectives one man grabbed her arm, and another touched her inappropriately. she pulled them away, pushed them away, rather, then they walked off when a car drove up. the woman says each man appeared to be in his 20s. a 20-year-old la plata man accused of attacking a man and

using a chainsaw to cut up his property. the charles county sheriff's officers arrested joel galloway on sunday in charles county. the victim told officers galloway tried to force his way into his home along bullet neck road in marbury that morning. we're working to find out why. galloway faces assault charges. former virginia governor bob mcdonnell want most charges against him and his wife thrown out. his lawyers filed a motion last night asking a federal judge to dismiss nine of the 11 counts against them. they say the couple never did anything to help the dietary supplement company they're accused of promoting in exchange for gifts and money. the mcdonalds have already -- mcdonnells have already pleaded not guilty. the trial is set for july. just this time for the tourism season, the national parks service will reopen the washington monument on monday, may 12th. a live look now. the monument's been closed for repairs since the east coast earthquake back in 2011. the repairs cost $15 million. you can start making tour reservations on line on april

5-year-old and 6-year-old in february. she shut down the daycare earlier this month after realizing she didn't have a proper license. an attorney says she believes police misinketerpreted what happened at the preschool. david culver will be at the hearing later this morning. now to one group's efforts that could lead to new developments in the search for relisha rudd. today marks exactly one month since the 8-year-old disappeared. relisha was last seen in this video. shows her with 51-year-old kalil tatum. the group called the black & missing foundation is getting involved now. it specializes in looking for young african-american children. a former cop who helped create the group says relisha may look much different now compared to the surveillance video. >> he may have altered her appearan appearance. he may have cut her hair. she may be dressed like a little boy. and so that's why it was so critical to get his picture out there because someone may notice him before they even notice the

little girl. >> a camera captured these images of the two in a hotel on february 26th. that same day he left with rudd from the family shelter at d.c. general. three weeks later, police found tatum's wife, andrea, dead in a hotel in oxon hill. tatum is wanted for that murder. there is a $50,000 reward for information that leads to tatum and to relisha's returned. three secret service agents on administrative leave after an incident involving alcohol overseas. they were in the netherlands this weekend when hotel staff found one agent drunk and passed out. sources say the hotel reported it to the u.s. embassy. two other agents were with him. the secret service sent all three agents back home on sunday. president obama arrived at the same hotel on monday. new this morning, we are hearing the 911 calls moments after the massive mudslide in washington state. take a listen. >> there's like a mudslide! everything is gone. the houses are gone!

>> are there any injuries? >> yes. there's people yelling for help. >> it's hard to listen to. frantic calls. right now the death toll from saturday's mudslide stands at 16. we know that that number could very well rise. crews believe they may have located eight more bodies. and if that's true, that would raise the death toll to 24. right now, there's a list of 176 people still unaccounted for, but some of those could be duplicates. 6:48. we expect a major announcement from d.c. mayor vincent gray about the future of united medical center. according to the "washington post," the mayor wants to replace umc with a new medical center on the st. elizabeth's campus in southeast washington. he would use $300 million in public money to do that. umc is d.c.'s only full-service hospital east of the anacostia river. now poll numbers show gray is in a fight to keep his job. >> he's in a virtual tie with muriel bowser less than a week before the democratic primary.

bowser actually leads by 2% points now. in the new nbc 4 marist poll, that's within the margin of error. gray led bowser by 8% last month. neither say that they're surprised by the results. >> a virtual dead heat. i think it's kind of what we expected. >> we've seen over the last several weeks a growing energy around our campaign and what we're doing. >> now, whoever wins the democratic primary will probably face d.c. council member david catania in november's general election. catania is running as an independent. we posted the complete results of that poll on nbcwashington.com. all you have to do is search "decision d.c." also, if you need help with early voting, it is underway. we have a guide on line as well. 6:50. soon we could see the blooming cherry blossoms along the tidal basin. if you're not careful, you could be ticketed. richard jordan live along the tach to explain this.

-- tidal basin to explain this. >> reporter: a lot of people come down hoping to see the pretty flowers. the last thing they see is one of those bright hot pink parking ticketses slapped on the front of their windshield. we know why it happens. at the marshal mall and tidal basin, parking is tough. a lot of signs that say no stopping, no standing, no parking. you could get ticket. you could even get towed. today aaa is putting out a warning. they say if you plan on coming to the cherry blossom festival, take metro. that's a safe bet to get out here. you don't have to worry about the parking situation or ride a bike or ride down here. do something else. they say in previous years d.c. has generated about $70,000 in parking tickets alone. it's a warning that's being put out this morning. especially for tourists who don't know the rules when it comes to parking. we all know how difficult it can be and how complicated it sometimes gets to park down here. so that is the warning this morning. aaa saying they want this to be eeey don't want it to cost you

in arlington. it broke out just before 5:00 this morning at this townhouse on south pershing court. firefighters say it appeared to start in the top floor bedroom of the house. nobody was in the home at the time. firefighter were able to rescue one of the homeowner's cats. >> reporter: breaking news for the search in the missing malaysia airlines plane. a satellite captured images of 122 objects in the indian ocean. the defense minister called it "the most credible lead we have." those objects range in size from three feet to 69 feet. this new -- these new objects were found in an area not far from where other objects have been found. the "today" show will have more on this breaking story coming up in a few minutes at 7:00 a.m. a navy football player who suddenly collapsed ever the weekend has died. 19-year-old will mccammie collapsed at practice on saturday. he'd been in a coma at the hospital since then. it is still not clear what caused will to collapse. video showed that he didn't take any hard hits during that practice.
