in court today. >> and this is bigger than basketball. lebron james is going home to cleveland. reaction to this big decision. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson. >> i'm jim hanley. first today, a stark reminder that anyone can be the target of a crime. a man pretending to be a cable worker got inside a d.c. couple's home and took their property. the victims are the parents of d.c. councilmember and mayoral candidate muriel bowser. this happened on south 7th street near decater. police just released a surveillance video of the suspect. investigators tell us a man walked up to the home of joseph and joan, range the doorbell. he said he was there to upgrade the signal on a pole and reboot the tvs in their house.

once inside the man walked around. after he was gone the couple noticed their two cell phones were missing. >> they are shaken up, of course, and they're mad, but they're like me, very grateful for the rapid response of mpd and the concern of a lot of neighbors. >> looks like her parents were not the only victims. police believe the same man posed as a cable worker to enter a house in the northeast the very same day. a hazardous spill near a popular d.c. tourist destination. fire and medic crews rushed to the national mall around 10:30 this morning. hydraulic oil spilled on the ground in front of the smithsonian's national museum of american history. now, we're told it came from equipment used for the folk life festival. that still was quickly cleaned up. money became sick or hurt from that spill. right now a mysterious

sinkhole is causing problems still in the district. one lane of 14th street will be closed through the weekend. it's located between constitution avenue and pennsylvania avenue. the sinkhole has been will for several days, but so far no one has been able to figure out what caused it. road crews have filled in the hole for now and there are cones up to help drivers safely maneuver around it. >> we identify what's down there and who owns what has been down there. it's directly beneath the sinkhole, but certainly something is down there that's causing a breach in the road like this. >> coming up on news 4 at 5:00 derek ward has a look at what's going on underground that might be part of the problem. >> finally, a fix is on the way to a big traffic problem in maryland, but it means an even bigger inconvenience to some that live nearby. this water main break was left a

guys, in 2010 lebron made headlines with his decision where he shared his plans to leave cleveland for miami. well, today's announcement not as showy, but very impactful. lebron announcing his return to the cavs on the sports illustrated website. in the article he says "when i left cleveland, i was on a mission. i was seeking championships, and we won two. my goal is still to win as many titles adds possible, no question, but what's most important for me is bringing one trophy back to northeast ohio." his departure from cleveland sparked a lot of angry emotion from his hometown fans as well as team owner dan gilbert. lebron has met with gilbert, understands the fans, and he is ready to play for cleveland again. coming up on news 4 at 5:00 miami on the other side of lebron's decision. we'll tell you how the heat are reacting. guys. >> we want to know what you think out there too. >> is lebron james making the

the hospital. >> the officer hopes to return to helping serving -- helping serve prince georges county soon. his doctors say his injuries to his ribs and knee need more time to heal. first thing this morning some girls in arlington had to run up a seven-story tower, carry a ladder around a building, drag a 185 pound mannequin to safety. and knock over orange cones with a hose. welcome to camp. it lets campers experience some of what it's like to become a firefighter, including the physical fitness. teams of girls competed in an obstacle course this morning. what was the toughest part? >> seven stories. after dragging a body and push-ups and sledgehammer with the tire, it was tiring. my legs are on fire. it's challenging, but very fun.

zimplgt fairfax county police are trying to track down men that are using skimming devices on bank atm's. since early june atm's have been hit. skimming devices are used to copy customers' bank card information and then the suspects can get money from those accounts. fair fox county police have released photos of the three men they think are responsible. they say one was carrying a pizza box with him when he went to attach a skimming device to an atm. >> personnel that worked at

security noticed the anomalies, and i think the pictures and things like that of people who were doing things that were unusual at the atm machines. they contacted police. >> police say sun trust was able to contact customers about the unauthorized access to their accounts. now it's up to police to find the suspects. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, a taking place.t how the skimming a hawk is back in the sky over the potomac after spending months recovering in captivity. bioologists set the bird free this afternoon here in turkey run park off the gw parkway. the red shouldered hawk spent the past three months being rehabilitated at the raptor conservancy of virginia after possibly being hit by a car. the hawk suffered a concussion and leg injuries. mark stein found the bird in the park back in april while walking his dog. >> i went back the next day. he is 20 feet away from where he

scrutiny right now. just over a month ago bowe bergdahl left captivity in a credential prisoner exchange. he is in his final phase of his reintegration process, but as peter alex appeareder reports, a picture from his time in captivity is raising a lot of eyebrows. >> reporter: a few more weeks. that's how much longer u.s. military officials say bowe bergdahl may still have ahead of him here at san antonio. the army says the former p.o.w. has been easing into public, being allowed with sprfgs to go to a rest raupt and a library. again this week bergdahl's five years in captivity are raising new questions. this photo posted to a twitter account associated with the taliban and al qaeda amz to show bergdahl smiling along side a former leader of the hakani terrorist network. pentagon officials are downplaying the photo's significance, telling nbc it's 100% propaganda. >> we certainly have to understand this photo was when

buyers show proof of their age at a concession stand and then they can buy a vending card. they can pour themselves up to 48 ounces of beer every 15 minutes. just like the concession stands, the vending machines stop selling beer by the seventh inning. the all-star game will be played at the target field. that's next tuesday. the boss who fired a worker for buying and smoking legal pot has apparently had a change of heart. recreational weed is now legal in washington state. mike was thrilled to be the first person in line on tuesday to buy a bag at the store in spokane, but when his boss saw him on the news, he got fired from his job as a security guard. however, the employer has rehired him saying that since pot is now legal and he wasn't on assignment at the time, the termination was a mistake, but boyer says he has bigger plans for the future. >> i really like to find an in on this marijuana industry. give me a chance doing that.

a new recall to tell you about. this one involving suvs that can short circuit and start a fire. >> news 4 consumer reporter erica gonzalez is here to tell us all about this. >> another recall we are talking about. this time this is news for chrysler today. announcing that it is recalling more than 650,000 suvs because the vanity mirror lights that have been -- have already been repaired can short circuit and start a fire. the recall is for certain 2011 and 2014 jeep grand cherokee and dodge durango suv models. chrysler says that it knows of three injuries so far that have been caused by those lighted sun visor mirrors that have been repaired. dealers will let employees know when they can have the problem fixed. we'll put a list on those suvs at nbcwashington.com. with all the recent recalls, here's a convenient option that you can check if your car is safe or not.

the fbi is trying to track down this guy. he threatened to blow up a bank in our area if the teller doesn't give him cash. surveillance video shows him inside the capital one on university boulevard in silver spring. investigators tell us he held up another location in silver spring last month. in that case they say he actually put a device on the counter and said it would explode as he left. turns out the so-called bomb was a fake. an update now on a story we brought you a few weeks ago. a task force is now targeting squatters in one local county who are taking advantage of the

thousands of foreclosed homes in our region. in prince georges county there's a case against a woman accused of illegally renting foreclosed properties that she does not own. since that came to light, a number of residents in the county have come forward worried they may have the same issue in their own neighborhoods. now, a group of county officials and police are taking a look into at least six additional cases. >> what we have to do as an investigation, we have to determine what the facts and circumstances are, how the person owns the property, is there a clear owner of the property, will that owner come to court? all those things will determine exactly how we'll address those different issues. >> county bureau chief tracy wilkins will have much more in our report in our next hour. a florida foster mother is under arrest this afternoon accused of child neglect. police say she left a 15-month-old baby boy alone in a hot car. monique williams says she just ran into the store to get some milk for one of had her other

foster children who is sick. a grocery store employee saw the boy, called police. when officers arrived on the scene, the child was drenched in sweat. all three of williams' foster children have now been removed from her home. she's out of jail this afternoon on a $1,000 bond. new developments right now in the case involve aing fworj george man accused of killing his 22-month-old son by leaving him in a hot car. ross harris's wife, leann wra, has hired a criminal defense attorney in atlanta and is now back with her family in alabama. she has not been named a suspect in the case and has not been charged with any crime in the death of their 22-month-old son, cooper. ross harris told police he forgot to drop his son off at daycare when he went to work. he is now in jail and has been fired from his job. disturbed by all the recent events with children being left alone in hot cars? well, a police officer down in texas decided to videotape a demonstration of his own. >> he spent 30 minutes in his

there is new information about the violent past of the texas man accused of killing six members of his family. chris clackum has new details and a look at the suspect's dramatic first day in court. >> ronald lee haske elfainted. >> maybe reality is finally setting in. he is facing his consequence. >> reporter: eventually wheeled out in a chair, haskell was appointed a public defender. >> the purpose of my defense with regard to mr. haskell is going to be on his mental condition. >> reporter: investigators say haskell shot his ex-wife's sister, her husband, and their five children execution style on wednesday evening. all but the 15-year-old daughter died.

a brief chase followed and ended in a cul-de-sac with haskell surrendering after a three-hour standoff after a history of violence that started in 2008 with a guilty plea in utah for assaulting his wife. >> he had been hurting her and she decided leave at that time. >> reporter: haskell's wife filed for divorce a year ago. then just last week in california haskell's 61-year-old mother filed this restraining order saying her son had duct taped her wrist and choked her medical she passed out. then he told me he was going to kill me, my family, and any officer who stops him. no officer in california could find haskell before he had fled to texas. chris clackum, nbc news.
