welcome to your weekend. we're looking at just some clouds around this morning. but all in all, plenty of sunshine as the sun continues to come up. mostly sunny skies. there's some patches in the rural areas that will burn off. some cloudiness around -- this is the kind of cloudiness that allows for filtered sunshine. 66 in frederick, 73 in washington. here's a look at your temperatures through the early afternoon hours. by 9:00 a.m. we're already flirting with that 80-degree mark. by noon we're in the mid-80s. temperatures continue to climb into the afternoon hours. i'll have your full forecast coming up in a bit. and i have to say on the seven-day we are looking at some awesome weather. so you want to stay tuned. >> thanks, amelia. a 25-year-old man now recovering after being hurt in a bad crash in montgomery county. this happened late last night on

beach drive and windale road. the driver switched lanes and went into a tree. luckily no one else was hurt. family and friends remember a young man who was drowned this week. anthony johnson jr. had just graduated from forest park high school in prince william county. he was planning on attending college this fall. he drowned while swimming with friends. the memorial tonight is at mt. claire elementary. this morning a woman is looking for answers in her sister's murder in northern virginia. she tells news4 she found her younger sister dead inside their two-bedroom apartment on derby court on july 4th. she ate dinner with her 43-year-old sister the night before, watching tv, and then went to their separate bedrooms to sleep. the next morning she says she

found her sister strangled to death. >> please find my sister killer. please. i'm begging you guys. >> she moved to alexandria from ethiopia nine years ago. she worked at this restaurant for five years as a cook. she had no kids and she was not married. if you have any information in her death, call alexandria police. and right now we're following a developing story overseas. benjamin netanyahu says his country will continue to defend itself itself. more than 120 people in gaza have been killed. israel launched air strikes in respond to rocket fire coming from gaza. palestinians in gaza are requesting the united nations for a ceasefire. they're asking for immediate ceasefire. it does not mention hamas firing into israel. most other council members back the palestinians.

the centers for disease control and prevention is doing damage control this morning. it's placed a stop on the shipment of all samples of biological materials from high security level labs. this comes after a lab mistake that led to exposure to anthrax. >> i'm upset. i'm angry. i'm working around the clock to make sure we do everything possible to resolve. >> he will face tough questions this week in washington. he's scheduled to discuss the anthrax scare before a congressional committee. erica edwards has more on the laboratory mistakes. >> reporter: an internal investigation at the centers for disease control and prevention has revealed several serious errors. historically considered world class in their safety precautions. >> i'm disappointed by what happened. and frankly i'm angry about it.

>> during a press briefing on friday, tom frieden started with the anthrax scare that exposed 80 cdc workers. >> the scientists failed to follow a scientifically derived and reviewed protocol that would have ensured that anthrax was activated and the material was confirmed to be sterile before it left the lab. that didn't happen. >> reporter: that lab is now closed. in a separate incident, workers accidentally sent a sample of highly infectious bird flu to an outside lab. this week another government health agency discovered decades' old viles of viable forms of smallpox. this leads to one ckey question. >> how could this have happened

in northern virginia, the commonwealth is giving up $65 million to the streetcar projects along columbia pike. stretching five miles from the skyline area to pentagon city in arlington. >> that streetcar system expected to bring in billions of dollars. a study found it will up real estate values by $4.4 billion there over the next 30 years. the system expected to bring in more than $455 million in tax revenue. the study includes the columbia pike segment at the crystal city potomac yard segment as well. vincent gray vetoed the $10.6 billion budget approved by the city council. he is asking council to work with his office. the proposed budget includes cuts to the streetcar system, the elimination of a tax break for senior citizens, plus a new fitness tax on yoga and gym

memberships. he has asked council to reconsider its spending plan. >> it had things in there i was opposed to. even sending it back unsigned with a letter i don't think would get the attention that this issue warrants at this stanl. >> district council approved the budget 12-1. it would take nine votes to override the mayor's veto. looks like maryland casinos are giving atlanta a run for its money. our sister station in philadelphia is reporting another atlantic city casino reported to close. sources tell our station wcau that the trump plaza hotel and casino could shut doors by september. the showboat casino is already slated to close this ar.

actor tracy morgan is suing walmart. you might remember morgan was seriously hurt in the suit that killed a fellow comedian. the driver of one of walmart's tractor-trailers slammed into a bus. the driver has pleaded not guilty. a california mother says she plans to hire an attorney after she was removed from a concert in san diego. megan kristofferson had her 4-month-old strapped to her son in the pit area. >> i need you to come over here. >> it's illegal to have my child at a concert? >> yes, ma'am. it's child endangerment. >> police say concert security spotted the infant and were concerned about her getting hurt. kristofferson said the baby was

fast asleep and she believes security targeted her because earlier she was breast-feeding at the concert. the officers gave her the option of moving to a different area or having her tickets refunded. she decided to leave altogether. the san diego district attorney tells our sister station that kristofferson was not cited at the concert and the incident is under review. we get an inside look at what it feels like to be locked in a car in the summer heat. a police officer in texas did just that to remind people not to leave children alone in vehicles. >> sweating more and more. it's probably hard to see. >> rorter: after 15 minutes -- >> breathing is a little harder to do. >> reporter: -- then 20. corporal jamie peterson sat in his car as temperatures reached 94 degrees. >> it's 120 degrees after 30

minutes. >> reporter: after 30 minutes he had to stop. >> it's pretty brutal. definitely an awareness even for myself. >> reporter: heatstroke is the second leading cause of non-traffic fatalities among children in the u.s. so far this year, 16 children have died. a recent survey of a thousand parents found that nearly seven in ten know about the dangers but said they would leave their own children alone in a car. 14% of parents reported they have actually done it. experts say most people think a tragedy won't happen to them. >> and that is the worst mistake any person can ever make. because if you think it can't happen to you, then you won't put the protections in place that will prevent it from happening. >> reporter: right now there are no government-approved technologies on the market to alert when kids are left in the car. experts say parents and caregivers need to be the first line of defense. >> anyone watching this can potentially save a child's life if they see a child left alone in a car.

>> reporter: in fact, tennessee just passed a law to protect passers by who break a car window if they think a child's in danger. it was passers by in new mexico who rescued a 5-year-old girl locked in a hot pickup truck for more than a year. >> screaming, sweating, i'm sure very scared. >> reporter: a child saved and a reminder of an avoidable tragedy. well, a black bear found himself in trouble in wisconsin until two guys came to his rescue. take a look here. the bear got his little head stuck in a can. a potato farmer and a logger saw the bear just walking around with the 35-pound milk can on its head. so they decided to help. they captured the moment on camera. they used a device normally used for lifting wood. you can see bear running happily back into the woods.

air. if you didn't catch the moon, it will be similar in size tonight too. so you can go and check it out. here's what you can expect. a mainly dry weekend, the best chance that you're dealing with rain and thunderstorms will actually be on tuesday. that's as a cold front moves through. there could be severe weather on tuesday. that front allows refreshing air -- and when i say refreshing, fabulous air for summer to make its way into the area. wait until you see the seven-day and the high temperatures for the middle and latter part of next week. temperatures now for the most part in the upper 60s. 68 in manassas and rockville and gaithersburg. going for the early morning run, boot camps this morning, the weather is looking nice. satellite not tracking any rain. just some cloudiness along the i-81 corridor and areas to the west. high temperatures today will be

similar. 90 in washington. 91 in manassas. 88 in gaithersburg. the uv index today very high. what does that mean? you can get sunburn in 15 minutes. so spf 30 at least every two hours to prevent that. here's your planner for tomorrow. clouds will be increasing throughout the day and a little bit breezy at times too. that would be good because a high temperature tomorrow of 95 degrees. it will be hot outside. and you're going to notice the humidity in the air. we'll start off with some sunshine, but by the afternoon there will be plenty of clouds around the area. and hit or miss showers. especially west of washington. about a 30% chance that you're dealing with a late day shower or thunderstorm tomorrow. but most if not all of your sunday is really looking dry. monday, a high temperature of 93 degrees. some scattered late-day showers and thunderstorms are more likely on monday.

a sinkhole in the middle of a heavily traveled tourist area could easily happen again. 14th street near constitution now reopened but the issue kept lanes closed for days. we did some digging and found out that type of sinkhole could be the result of past and present colliding. derek ward has a look at why you haven't perhaps seen the last of sinkholes in d.c. >> reporter: it's a modern problem. holes in the infrastructure like this one at the intersection of

14th street and constitution avenue that opened up on tuesday. authorities wanted to know why. >> we need to identify what's under there and determine the condition that it's in. and who knows whatever's down there. >> reporter: it's not d.c. water or any other utility as far as they can tell. filled the hole and made the temporary patch, but there's something left beneath the hole. a mystery. it was a creek before it was washington. it was incorporated as part of the canal finished in 1815. >> and it was meant to transport building materials, so it was for the capitol and agricultural products. >> reporter: but it ended up being a blight on the city. >> it wasn't deep enough. it became a sewer. >> reporter: by the 1850s it was filled in with but with what? >> it's an investigation just to see what is down there. but right now we just don't

here's a look at today's top stories. a 25-year-old man is recovering after being hurt in a bad single-car crash in montgomery county. look at that vehicle. this happened late last night in chevy chase and windale road. the driver drifted across lanes and slammed into a tree. he was rushed to the hospital with serious injury. and the director of the cdc will face tough questions this week in washington. dr. tom frieden scheduled to discuss the anthrax scare before a congressional committee. 83 workers were exposed to the virus after it was transported. heads up this morning. five new speed cameras will start giving you tickets in the districts. all the cameras are in southeast d.c. if you are caught speeding, you could be ticketed up to $300.

walk, it's not too hot out yet. temperature right now, well, we're at 73 degrees. there is some fogginess around especially around areas that a further west of washington. temperature by 9:00 a.m. at a mild 77. by noon we're already in the mid-80s. 3:00 the temperature of 89. dry today. some storms are in the forecast for tomorrow. i'll have more details on the rest of your weekend coming up. >> thank you. we are getting a look at a new report on the navy yard shooting. d.c. police released this report to help coordinate their response should there be a future attack. 12 people died at the navy yard that day. news4's jackie bensen spoke with the police chief. >> reporter: this is a black and white diagram of just one section of the maze-like 600,000 square feet at the washington navy yard. it gives a feeling for how the

cops who ran in to save lives found themselves in the middle of what felt like a violen video game made horrifically real. the after-action report on the september 2013 incident that claimed a dozen lives reveals the race to stop the gunman was made difficult by certain obstacles. among them, the door to the room was locked by a security guard who didn't contact police. d.c. police chief spoke to news4 by phone. >> while we were searching that building, the cameras would have been helpful. >> reporter: the report recommends that large gated complexes put go bags containing maps, key cards to places where they can get to them quickly. the navy yard shooting is an example why they must coordinate and train together.

>> we never get an active shooter or training drill inside of the base walls because i think because we all made the assumption that because it's a military base, everybody in there is armed. >> reporter: jackie bensen, news4 today. >> access to the security cameras would not have prevented any loss of life. it recommends they establish a unified command center so local and federal agencies can talk to each other when an incident like this happens. charles county police are warning women about a potential sexual predator. a woman fought off a man earlier this week at a storage lot in white plains. the woman says he grabbed her from behind as she was walking to her storage unit. police released this sketch. he says the man pushed her to the ground and tried to take her clothes off but he was able to fight him off. he drove off in a green car with maryland plates. police in fairfax county

looking for these three men. they allegedly installed devices to steal personal information. it's called skimming. atms at three different banks have been hit since early june. a skimming device can copty a customer's card information allowing someone else to access your money. it can be inserted as well into an atm slot and record small numbers. cameras can also be set up to grab pin numbers. happening today, a family needs help to pay medical bills and save a boy's life. their son brent jr. there has been in and out of the hospital since he was born in august. doctors operated on him several times. he has a rare condition that causes heart defects and weakens his immune system. the family hopes to raise enough money to pay for experimental surgery to boost his immune system. the fund raiser is today at the
