reaches a fever pitch. now some of the children could be coming our way. ready or not, get ready to feel the heat. storm team 4's tracking how hot it will get and whether we could see some storms. >> news 4 at 11:00 starts now. a hot spot in college park is considered a threat to public safety. cars have run over and killed three people on route 1 just this year alone. changes have been made, but local leaders say not enough. news 4's darcy spencer is live in college park. do they have a new plan of action? >> reporter: safety officials -- city officials here say, like you said, not enough has been done. as you may know the recent colle college graduate was struck and

killed here. here's some safety improvements made. no pedestrian crossing on the curb and you can see signs not to jaywalk but that is still happening. city officials here say they want to see more done before students return to classes. these three young people, two of them students, died this year doing the same thing, crossing route 1 in college park, just steps from the university of maryland campus. >> never happened that we have had this many over the course of one year. it really woke us up in the need to address this problem. >> reporter: safety officials have changed the timing of the signals to give walkers more time to cross and put up no meds pedestrian signs in the median to discourage jaywalking. >> i don't want to endanger myself. i'm trying to have a good time, not get run over. >> patrick is a city council member who says more safety

improvements need to be made before students return to class in september. that includes lowering the speed limit here from 30 to 45. >> there are a lot of statistics that show that speed difference can really make a difference in terms of whether or not the pedestrian does get hit and if the pedestrian does get hit the chances the pedestrian will survive. >> reporter: the highway administration is evaluating the overheadlighting and signs. designing a barrier to preevent jaywalking and plans to put countdowns on the pedestrian signals. >> see the sign, walk park college park. i guess the university is tasking action to make things safer for students here. >> reporter: students say the bars need to be part of the solution, too. >> bouncers kick people out on to the street and sometimes they fall in to the street. i think that's a bad policy. when they kick people out they need to send them out with a friend. >> reporter: that city council member we spoke to said he's interested in the idea of putting out speed cameras right here on route 1.

that's something that will be discussed at a meeting here sometime next week. live from college park, darcy spencer, news 4. we are following breaking news in montgomery county. a tractor-trailer caught fire as it sat at the loading dock in a giant food store. this is along georgia avenue in olney. a viewer tweeted these photos. people in the store were forced out as smoke poured n. we don't know how the fire started but we will bring you new details tomorrow on news 4 today starting at 6:00 in the morning. violence is flaring up in the middle east. this time between israel and lebanon. late this evening, the israeli military opened fire on southern lebanon in response to rocket fire from the north. no groups have claimed responsibility for the attack, but israel fears that as its conflict with gaza escalates militant groups in lebanon may be trying to open up a second front. the u.n. security council has

called for an immediate cease fire. back here at home, ten people have been forced to find somewhere to sleep after a massive fire and five of them are children. it broke out in bowie. investigators say it started on the deck of a townhouse and spread to two other homes. flames were so strong at one point firefighters had to pull out. they were afraid the roof may collapse on top of them. tonight storm team 4 is tracking big changes on the way. you will feel a difference when you step outside tomorrow. our high temperature today 90 degrees. our high tomorrow 94. it was a little humid today. you are going to notice the humidity tomorrow. down right muggy. the weather tomorrow having a low to moderate impact on your day. not only will it be hot and humid but likely scattered showers and storms around. mainly during the afternoon hours. temperatures right now in the 70s and 80s.

washington still at 80. lees bufrg 81. gaithersburg 75 as well as frederick . a look at the high temperature in your neighborhood tomorrow, d.c. warms to 9. manassas 95 and leesburg 94. some showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for tomorrow. i'll have the timing on this coming up in ten minutes. >> thank you. a massive fire destroyed three town homes in maryland. folks in brunswick pulled out their cell phones and started rolling. somebody posted this video on facebook. you can actually hear the flames crackling. it took firefighters 45 minutes to get a handle on it and one was slightly hurt doing so. investigators are trying to figure out how it started. the city of m more is in the middle of a national border crisis. the federal government is considering a plan to send hundreds of immigrant children to westminster in carroll county. they want to use a vacant army reserve building as a shelter. officials expect to tour the

facility soon. a congressman andy harris has promised to block the plan. he says using the building as a shelter could pose a danger to the community. president obama calls the situation a humanitarian crisis. here's whiechlt since october, 52,000 children from central america have illegally crossed the border and most of them have nowhere to go. no laughing matter but big progress for tracy morgan after he survived a serious crash. diners at a popular restaurant forced to take cover in the middle of their meals. and police think they have a solution for when

diners in a potomac bar got a shock when a honda civic came crashing through the front door. it went through the french doors and nearly mowed people down. we're told an 80-year-old woman and her husband were in the car. they were parked nearby and accidentally accelerated in to the restaurant. four people had to go to the hospital but they weren't too badly hurt. d.c. continues to find new ways to make money off of folks that speed through the district. just be fully aware five new cameras are activated and looking for lead foot drivers. the speed limits are 25 to 30 miles an hour and if the cameras catch you going faster, tickets can cost up to 300 bucks. tracy morgan is out of the hospital and recovering at home. he broke his legs and ribs last

month when a wal-mart tractor-trailer smashed in to the back of his limo. one of his friends died in the crash. his publicist said he will undergo an aggressive out patient program and is suing wal-mart for negligence. the suit alleges the driver fell asleep at the wheel and wal-mart let him work despite he hasn't slept in 24 hours them driver pleaded not guilty to criminal charges. it has been 150 years since the civil war battle was fought here in d.c. and it could have changed the city's history. the battlefield encountered a new fight today. get ready to feel the heat. gewithout the internet i would probably be like a c student. internet essentials from comcast has brought low-cost internet access to over one million low-income people at home. internet essentials is going to transform the lives of families.

>> fire. >> cannon fire marks the moment when the civil war came to the district. hundreds of people turned out today for the 150th anniversary for the battle of fort stevens. it was the only time in u.s. history when a sitting president came directly underen enemy fire. it could have changed the history of d.c. if not for ordinary washingtonians who defended their homes. they held the fort and kept confederate soldiers from capturing the capital. >> the house i grew up is just down the street. this is really my neighborhood. it's home. >> this was literally saving washington, d.c. from confederate capture. >> one group was forced to stand on the sidelines today.

the capitals end their developmental camp hosting fan fest and introduce their prize catch and we hear from the owner ted leonsis whose team bolstered the defense so much this season it impressed the boss. >> right now i think this is the deepest defensive core we have had since i have owned the team. it also gives a lot of comfort to alex ovechkin and they see teams with good goal tending do well in the playoffs. the capitals future stars showing off their skills today. they got to shake hands with the new head coach as well. and then got to watch the young pros in style.
