good morning. on the brink. israel launching dozens of hair strikes over night as hamas leaders fire back sending residents in t-aviv fleeing for safety. israeli troops made their way into gaza this morning. we're live in gaza. wild weather. lightning strikes killed two people at a national park in colorado while the midwest prepares for the possibility of more flash floods, damaging winds and return of unseasonably cold weather.

and strength of a survivor. she speaks out for the first time since that day. >> i know that my mom, dad, bryan, emmy, beckett and zack are in a much better place and i'll be able to see them again. >> remembering her family as the community comes together to support her today, sunday, july 13th, 2014. and welcome to "today" on this sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> and i'm lester holt. we want to begin now with our top story. the escalating crisis in the middle east. overnight, israeli troops led a brief raid into gaza. fears mounted that it could turn

into an offensive on the ground. >> amy is live in gaza for us this morning. >> reporter: we've said it time and time again, this isn't a water between two equal sides. fighting against a palestinian militant group. but the concern is the kbroeing casualty toll here on the ground. today, there is indication that a ground invasion is just within a matter of hours as it warned people to leave. daylight in the scope of israel's overnight attacks become clear. many palestinians waking up to scenes of destruction. isra israel's military dropped leaflets. >> translator: we are being attacked by land air and sea. >> reporter: it was a close call in tel-aviv last night as well.

hamas promised it was going to attack israel and it delivered on its word. waiting was the defense system iron dome intercepting them in the skies above tel-aviv and saving lives. overnight israel raid add rocket launching site in gaza. residents feared this was the beginning of the ground invasion. many fled, but it wasn't. israeli troops are still on the border, israel intensified its air strikes, targeting the home of the islamic police chief. he survived. but many people died, including women and children from his family. hospitals struggled to cope with the injuried. for some like this doctor and his family, the violence has become unbearable.

today, they were among 300 americans evacuated by the u.n. and the u.s. embassy. >> 3 billion every year. i feel like they're putting us in danger. >> reporter: they were here on summer vacation visiting family when the war broke out. leaving was a hard choice. >> my heart is staying back home. my heart's staying in gaza. >> reporter: an escape to safety for one american family that very few palestinians in gaza will have. now erica, the united nations is calling on both sides to exercise resnt in place a cease fire as quickly as possible. but neither side shows signs of backing down. they are saying they are prepared for a ground invasion and caught in the middle are the civilians where the death toll continues to rise every day.

erica? >> thank you. david gregory is moderator of meet the press. good morning. >> good morning. >> like to tee up the conversation with some of your conversation about the crisis of the middle east. let's play it. >> the united states and the rest of the members of the security council have a moral and legal responsibility to put an end to this and regret the fact that they haven't taken action. >> that's often the call. where is the u.s. what about the iranian role here. they have long been seen as a benefactor of hamas. >> yes, and they don't deny that. they denied actually providing weapons fired into israel. but israel claims they indeed are the source of those weapons. this is certainly more moral support from hamas from a part of the world that's influential.

but the administration right now has been pretty strongly behind israel. there's high anxiety about a potential ground operation. but never theless, i think israel feels like it has the backing from the united states because it's responding to a threat from hamas. and they may well take advantage of the opportunity to go in on the ground and take out the sites. >> when we saw this back in 2012, then secretary of state hillary clinton helped broker the cease fire deal. would the u.s. try to do the same in this case? >> i think there's ever reason the united states would. you've seen a failed policy in terms of negotiating a peace process. in this moment -- and i'll be speaking to the mideast envoy this morning. there is real fear that you've gone from bad to now worse. united states does not want to

see a further unraveling especially with everything going on in iraq. it's a very tense time. >> we'll look for more of your interview and we'll join you a bit later on. thanks very much. >> turning now to the severe weather system in the middle of the country. strong storms expected to hit the mit west today. there's also a bizarre cold snap in the forecast. there's some talk of a polar vortex. dylan is following all this. >> it's fun to call it the polar vortex because it will be unseasonably cold. first, let's look at the flooding we saw in illinois yesterday. look at how high up this water came. people and residents were wading through the water. they saw inches of rain yesterday. in dixon, illinois, a little bit further away, look as these

storms were trying to gather. you saw that swirling rotation in the dark clouds there. we didn't have any confirmed tornados, but it was very ominous looking. we do have the chance of some of those storms today producing isolated tornados. you can see moving through central illinois and indiana right now. the best chance of seeing the stronger storms today is a little further east than they were yesterday. southern illinois and back into pennsylvania. we could see damaging wind gusts and hail and isolated tornados. then it expands a lot into monday. from new york city right back into arkansas. that's what we'll focus on tomorrow along with the colder air that's going to move in. it's the same setup but not cold enough to be a polar vortex. but it is going to be fairly

cold chltd look at some of our temperatures here. duluth about 68 degrees. temperatures only around 69 on monday in chicago. so it certainly is going to cool down. we'll talk more about that. turn now to the powerful words of a sole survivor of that massacre in texas last week. the 15-year-old that helped track down the man charged with the killings spoke out for the first time at a memorial service for her family. >> reporter: 15-year-old cassidy stay showed remarkable strength. >> i'm really thankful for all of the people that have been praying if he more and keeping me and my family in their thoughts. >> reporter: cassidy is the only one to survive the attack at her spring texas home. >> i'm on a straight path for recovery. >> reporter: police say she was shot execution style along with

her parents and four siblings. cassidy survived. the suspected gunman ronald haskell was reportedly looking for his ex-wife when he broke into his former sister-in-law's home. >> she had the presence of mind to remain quiet and play dead. >> reporter: then cassidy called 911. police say she saved her grandparents believed to be the shooter's next part. in court, haskell's knees buc e buckled as he heard the murder charges against him. a dramatic contrast to the resill yans of a teenage girl. >> i know that my mom, dad, bryan, emily, beckett and zach are in a much better place. >> reporter: with her family gone, a community steps in. for tood, nbc news, los angeles.

>> right now let's get you caught up. >> da na is here with those for us. >> good morning everyone. lightning strikes have claimed the lives of two people in two days in colorado's rockery mountain national park. a group of people were struck while hiking a trail about 11 thoir ,000 feet u7. >> the lightning remains one of the most danrous things in rocky mountain national park. >> now on friday, a woman from ohio was killed in several others were hurt as well. united airlines is investigating one of its newer jet liners, a boeing 777 after an ordeal on friday. it was forced to make an emergency landing on a remote island in the pacific. >> reporter: frightening moments

inside the cabin of a united airlines flight carrying 348 passengers and crew. the plane was on its way to guam when it had to be diverted to midway on thursday. united issued a statement saying it was due to quote, a mechanical issue. some reports of an odor in the cabin. the tiny island of midway was also called on in 2011 when a delta flight had to make an emergency landing due to a cracked wind sealed. midway island is less than 2.5 square miles in size. just two weeks ago, the evacuation slide opened in the middle of a flight from chicago to southern california. no one was hurt and the plane landed safely. meanwhile, some have taken to twitter with this latest incident. writing, i thought they meant chicago not the pacific.

luckily everyone is okay and have skins traveled onto their final destination. nbc news. comedian tracy morgan is finally out of rehab a month of a deadly car crash left his with some serious injuries. the former saturday night live star will continue his recovery at home with an aggressive outpatient program. the limo he was riding in was hit by a walmart truck. james mcnair was also killed in the crash. walmart has been sued. we watched, waited and wondered what would lebron james do. he chose to return home to cleveland to play babbsketball d now it's time for the cavs to pay up. he could have taken a four-year

forecast. erica? >> we're getting a new look at the growing crisis at the u.s. border with mexico this morning and the thousands of children coming into this country. many of them making that long journey alone without an adult with them. >> reporter: ride wg the u.s. border patrol in south texas, it doesn't take long to find a group of immigrants who've crossed rio grande. they are all women and kids. amongamy. a nervous little girl who says she's traveling without relatives hopeing to find her mother in the united states.

when asked where she lives, she shows them a piece of paper. a few miles away, we run into a larger group that seems exhausted from their ten-day journey. >> we have a mixed bag here of folks from guatemala and elsaliva doer. >> reporter: they're taken by bus to a processing center. back on the road, we hear about the apprehension of 19 more people. the difference between this group and the family units we've seen who turned themselves into the authorities is pretty obvious. first, they're older, mostly male, and they tried to hide from the authorities. agents used atvs and a helicopter to find them. they are starting to see fewer immigrants now. too early to tell though if it's just temporary or the start of a downward trend.

been found safe in north carolina. he had been missing since yesterday from hunt, virginia. police say does continue ace mother 39-year-old denise shaver and another man 24-year-old kevin parish abducted him. those two have been arrested in custody. police have not said why dustin should not have been with his mother in the first place. d.c. police are investigating a triple shooting in northwest washington. three men were shot on north capitol street at t street in the bloomingdale neighborhood. this happened just after 2:00 a.m. police say the men were shot inside a car. news 4's derrick ward will have a live report from the scene at 9:00. we're going to check your forecast next. stay with us.

extremely focused on safety. for myself, with the way the media has been showing the children that have been left in vehicles, especially with the large media story about the dad that did it, it was important for me to find out for myself how it felt and -- and be able to put that on for other people to see. i did it in a safe environment, obviously. but for me, that's the reason why i did it. >> but you wouldn't advocate someone else trying this i would imagine. >> yeah, not at all. i know now that i've done it and i've had the experience, i know what it feels like for, you know, 30 minutes. and i definitely wouldn't want other people to do it now that i've experienced it myself. i can see how it can be very dangerous for somebody, especially if they don't have safety precautions with them. >> so you documented this. a child's body temperature

increases at five times the rate of that of an adult. at 20 minutes you say it was rough and breathing was getting harder. what was the most surprising part of this experiment for lack of a better word for you? >> i think just the rate in which the temperature rose. you know, i started with the air conditioner on full blast just like it would be for a parent driving around with a child and turned the car off and left the child. so i started with it really cool in the car. i thought i was doing pretty good. five, maybe up to ten minutes it wasn't too bad. but it started getting really about around the 15-minute mark. >> there's so much talk about awareness these days especially in the wake of the death of little cooper. do you find there's more awareness that you're seeing, especially in a place like texas where we know how hot it is?

>> i think that parents and caregivers in general are aware. it's kind of like beating a dead horse, but at the same time, in order to consistently get people to think and think and think and even know it might be common sense to get people to pay attention over and over and over and over again, i think it's very important just for the general message. again, not advocating going out and doing the hot car challenge. i would ask people not to do that. but the message in general is something especially in texas and other states that it gets super hot, it's a good message and something that people need to be reminded of. >> appreciate your time this morning thank you. dylan is out on the plaza let'check in with her again now. >> good morning, everyone. seems like everybody is celebrating a birthday from orlando. you're turning how old today? >> we're turning 70. >> i'm turning 21.

>> will you come back on your birthday. >> heck yeah. >> we'll look for you down the road. going to see pretty warm temperatures in parts of the country. it's humid too. that humidity will fuel some of the storms. best chance of strong storms, western new york stretching back into western kentucky. we could see isolated tornadoes but more the hail and damaging wind gusts. we are looking for that to start to spread eastward more tomorrow, expand a little bit, arkansas, to new york city. we could see some of the strong storms. it is going to be chilly. michigan, 58 degrees in the heart of summer. that's that cold air surging from the north and it is eventually going to replace the 77 in chicago and by tuesday, chicago should only top out in the 60s. it is going to be very much below average across the north and northeast as we go into early next week. that's a look at the weather across the country. here's a peek out your window. >> i'm storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal. temperatures 78 degrees. by noon already at 90. a high today of 94. now most of the day will be dry.

it has been the best year of his life pretty much. mike is now a pitcher for the wounded warriors softball team. they travel all across the country inspiring people of all ages. one year ago, my brother never could have imagined that he'd be playing with his heros. it all started with a moment bigger than any of us when he took to the field at fenway. invited to play with the wounded warrior am pie tee softball team. but it didn't end there. this time last year, you were a huge fan of this team and now all of a sudden you're playing with them. >> i love it. i never thought i'd play ball again. play wg these guys, it's the greatest thing ever. >> and at this game, neither has the fanfare.
