our high yesterday 90 degrees. our high today 94. because of the heat and humidity, the weather having a low to moderate impact on your day and also because of the chance of some scattered thunderstorms around the area later today. temperatures right now, around 80. we're right at 80 in washington. high temperatures today 94 in d.c., bethesda and fairfax, 93 upper marlboro, partly sunny skies today and again the threat of some storms later. i'll have the latest on timing with the storms coming up in a little bit, richard. >> thanks, amelia. new this morning, police are trying to figure out who shot three people in the district. the shooting happened around 2:00 this morning on north capitol and t street in northwest in the bloomingdale neighborhood. derrick ward is live where police are still on the scene. hey, derrick. >> good morning. this shooting actually happened at about 1:23 and i've spoken to people who live on the block and they didn't hear anything. the vehicle has come to rest here up against the guard rail

that separates the north capitol street underpass from the ground level traffic. it looked like that car also took out a fire hydrant as it came to rest here. it's unclear at this point whether the shooting happened here or some distance away and the car came to rest here. the good news is for people who attend st. martin's catholic church they are allowed to get into the church. police are escorting them through the crime scene. take a look at video from 1:23 when this happened. the ambulance is on the scene. three males were in this vehicle. they were taken away. we don't have any word about their conditions at this point. this is an investigation but some of the crime scene tape is now coming down. what you need to know if you are driving is that southbound north capitol, not on the underpass, but on the street level area, traffic is being halted as of rhode island avenue. northbound, north capitol, is going as usual through this scene and, of course, through the underpass.

they are taking some of the crime scene tape down on t street. that may be opening up soon as well once they get a tow truck to take this vehicle away. some traffic disruption as the investigation continues. three people shot here about 1:23 this morning. no word on their conditions. their ages or suspect information. we are live in northwest, derrick ward, news 4, back to you. >> thank you. all still new this morning, police are trying to figure out what led to a deadly motorcycle crash in upper marlboro on john rogers boulevard, prince george county police say the driver here lost control of the bike hit a curb and tree. rescuers took him to the hospital where he died. a virginia teenager is safe after an amber alert. state police were looking for 15-year-old dustin shaver. they believed he was in extreme danger. dustin was found unharmed this morning. police won't say just where yet. but we do know the teen's mother denise shaver, is in police

custody right now along with this man, 24-year-old kevin parish. they were suspected of abducted dustin. before the teen was found this morning, he was last seen in hurt, virginia, that's in the southern part of the state. today hundreds of people plan to protest at the federal energy regulatory commission. several religious groups are protesting, exporting fracked gases from u.s. coastlines. now fracking is when crews drill into the earth for natural gas. the commission plans to build a port at cove point in lusby maryland. they will march towards the commission's headquarters on new jersey avenue. some leaders consider a busy road near the university of maryland in college park a threat to public safety. this year three people have been kit-hit and killed on route 1. next week leaders will hold a meeting. darcy spencer reports changes already have been made but they say it is not enough.

>> reporter: these three young people two of them died doing the same thing, college route 1 in college park steps from the university of maryland campus. >> never happened that we've had this many over the course of one year and we -- it's really woken us up and the need to do something here to address this problem. >> reporter: safety officials have already changed the timing of the pedestrian signals to give walkers more time to cross and put up the no pedestrian signs in the median to discourage jaywalking. >> i don't want to endanger myself, trying to have a good time, not get run over. >> reporter: patrick is a city council member make a difference who says more safety improvements need to be made before students return to class, that includes lowering the speed limit from 30 to 25. >> there are a lot of statistics that show that speed difference can really make a difference in terms of whether or not a pedestrian does get hit and if a pedestrian does get hit the

chances they will survive. >> reporter: the state highway administration is evaluating all the overhead lighting and signs designing a barrier to go in the median to prevent jaywalking and plans to put countdowns on the signals. >> see the sign right there, walk smart, college park. i guess the university is trying to make things safer for students here. >> reporter: students say the bars need to be a part of the solution too. >> the bouncers kick people out, kick them on to the street and sometimes they fall into the street and that's a bad policy. i think when they kick people out they need to send them out with a friend. a giant food store is back open after evacuating customers last night because of a fire. take a look. a viewer tweeted these photos of the store along georgia avenue in olney. the fire started inside a truck parked in a loading dock last night. the smoke was so bad people were forced out of the store. over in bowie an intense two-alarm fire destroyed a store there. that fire broke out yesterday on

grenfeld court. investigators say the fire started on the deck of a townhouse and spread to two other homes. the flames were so strong firefighters had to pull back a few times out of fear the roof could collapse. firefighters tell us the weather made this fire difficult to put out. >> any time it's this hot, the firefighters when they work, they get exhausted much more quickly than they would on a typical day. so as a precaution, we almost always with this quantity of fire. >> ten people including five children were displaced by that fire. >> happening today, nasa scientists are expected to launch a rocket from wallops island in virginia to the international space station. the launch is expected to happen just before 1:00 this afternoon. the rocket is carrying food, supplies, scientific equipment and experiments for astronauts. nasa managers have delayed the rocket launch several times. extreme flooding in the midwest. we'll show you more of the huge mess left behind. >> here in d.c., brace yourself for severe weather in the week

this morning the floodwaters are receding thankfully in parts of illinois. heavy rains cause waters to rise in neighborhoods, flooding streets closing down highways and roads. people there before wading in waist deep water. there will be a mess to clean up today. much of the country will feel a big change in the weather in the week ahead. it's been called a summer sequel to the polar vortex, not the same thing although we did

hear that phrase a lot last winter. >> the polar vortex allows it to make its way down to the south. >> i don't think i've been this cold. >> now that we are in the next deep freeze and the next polar vortex, for better or worse could be a long ways off. >> get ready for another gush of cooler weather. >> storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal joins us now outside on the weather deck to explain this one. hey, amelia. >> good morning, guys. unlike the polar vortex, this gush of cooler weather is going to be fabulous. temperatures later this week will be feeling more like early june than mid july and low humidity as well. this isn't exactly the polar vortex because this air is coming from the pacific northeast. regardless, we'll take it. wherever it's coming from. like i said, it's going to be spectacul spectacular. today, tomorrow and tuesday, hot and humid, a high temperature of about 94 degrees. here's what's going to happen. this is our weather pattern on

new this morning, four people were hurt running with the bulls in pamplona spain. no one has been gored. this is video from yesterday's run. during today's run two bulls tossed two runners and came this close. three are sbn hospitalized with injuries to the head and chest. the festival lasts nine days. today is day seven. back in the states thousands signed up to get chased by bulls through suburban chicago. it's called the great bull run and it's the first of its kind in the chicago area. the organizer wanted to run with

the bulls in spain but found it was too expensive so he started a run at home. no one was hurt during this one. in the week ahead crews will move a wrecked cruise ship off the italian coast. tomorrow they will float the "costa concordia" and ten dug boats will drag it to a port for demolition. 32 died when the ship capsized three years ago. the captain is facing multiple charges includiner causing a ship wreck and abandoning the ship. 77 years since amelia earhart vanished while attempting to fly around the world. >> seven decades later 31 years later amelia rose earhart took on the challenge and completed the journey. nbc's joe fryer has her story. >> reporter: there was much anticipation surrounding the final landing of this modern day amelia earhart. it seems certain her around the

world flight would end smoothly. >> my girl. >> reporter: this odyssey was about something deeper. >> i feel like it's a part of me, it was what i was born to do and now, we did it. we finished the flight around the world. >> reporter: amelia rose earhart recently learned she's not related to her namesake, she has always felt a connection, even as a kid. >> she thought, maybe i can fly around the world. wouldn't that be awesome. >> reporter: it's why she got her pilot's license ten years ago and why she decided to recreate the 1937 journey that ended with amelia mary earhart disappearing over the pacific ocean. she called this the amelia project, a way to get girls excited about aviation. we were with her before the flight. >> the view outside will be amazing and for a lot of it, we'll be staring out at just the big blue ocean. >> reporter: in the past 77 years, airplane technology has greatly improved. >> we're taking off. >> reporter: human nerves of remain as fragile as ever. >> happy tears. >> reporter: as earhart began her emotional voyage she had a

special goal in mind. >> personally i want to see the sunrise around the entire globe. >> reporter: why every takeoff was scheduled at sunrise and this is what they saw. using social media earhart and her co-pilot shane jordan shared all kinds of images from their two-week adventure which spanned 17 cities and 14 countries. from brazil to senegal to singapore and beyond. toward the end they circled tiny howland island where her namesake was supposed to land but never made it. >> i was trembling as we flew over. i'm fumbling with my cameras trying to capture the moment and finally set everything down and just looked. >> reporter: their trip finally ended where it began. >> where's dad? there he is. >> reporter: in oakland at the same hangar where the first amelia started her quest. >> and i feel like we've brought her home. >> reporter: a once-in-a-lifetime journey for which the sun has now set. joe friar, nbc news, los angeles. we have our own amelia here.

>> we do. >> we can't get enough amelia today, amelia segal for more on the forecast. >> no relation to amelia earhart in any way. as far as the forecast is concerned, we're looking at former temperatures today, more humidity. the good news, it looks like the storm chances will hold off until after sunset. maybe an isolated hit or miss shower or thunderstorm before the sun goes down. but it's really looking like 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 p.m. when we'll start to track scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area. so you need to get the yard work done or maybe plans to enjoy the yard today. the weather looking to cooperate. because of the heat and humidity the weather will have a low to moderate impact on your day today. i want to walk you through the day with future weather. 10:00 a.m., looking at cloudiness across the area but the filtered cloudiness. partly cloudy skies. 3:00, notice the spotty shower activity. look at what happens once we get toward 10:00 here on future weather. we're starting to track storms.

potentially with some heavy rain moving through the area. some strong winds possible as well. now future weather for tomorrow, this is when maybe you're waking up, getting ready to head into work, maybe you're already on the road. it's dry. so the morning commute tomorrow not impacted by the weather. the midday hours also looki ing dry. once you get into the afternoon hours, 2:00 on future weather, notice the storms moving through the area, including washington, notice the reds as well indicating heavy rain falling with thunderstorms, lots of lightning potentially tomorrow as well. now the severe storm potential today is very low. just the chance for some isolated high winds and any thunderstorms that could produce some very, very minor wind damage. right now, our temperature is 80 degrees by 3:00. we're looking at a temperature of 93 and partly sunny skies throughout the day. now tomorrow, 7:00 a.m., a temperature of 78. for the midday hours, we're in the mid 80s. it's humid once again tomorrow.

it will feel similar outside tomorrow as it does today. 3:00, tracking storms across the area, again, potentially severe. 7:00 p.m., rain and storms are likely. so you have plans outdoors tomorrow, the kids have sports, maybe you're planning on seeing an outdoor concert, know that you'll likely be dealing with storminess. for the severe potential tomorrow, i'm keeping a very close eye on the threat of high winds producing wind damage and hail. because of the threat of heavy rain, there could also be some spotty flash flooding across the area. so tomorrow, a day you definitely need to be weather ready. also on tuesday, there's a chance of some severe weather. we're looking at showers and thunderstorms on tuesday. not just confined to the afternoon hours. we could see some a little earlier as well. tuesday, a high of 89, it's humid. wednesday, this is when we see the change, low humidity, plenty of sunshine, comfortable temperatures. a high of 84. we repeat this on thursday and friday. next saturday, a little bit

>> check in with meteorologist amelia segal outside on the team 4 weather deck. >> good morning. the good news about the rain as i keep looking at new information coming in, it's still looking like it's going to hold off now until mainly after sunset. 8:00, 9:00 p.m. you can see right now there's a nice breeze outside and you will be breezy at times throughout the day today. overall, partly sunny skies means we're looking at a very high uv index. you can get sun burn in as little as 15 minutes today. spf 30 at least every two hours. temperatures right now around 80 degrees. 80 in washington, 79 gaithersburg and camp springs. not bad with the breeze but when the winds calm down you can feel the mugginess. does it feel muggy as temperatures climb into the low to mid 90s across the area. an isolated storm is possible this afternoon, but we're looking at scattered showers and thunderstorms for the evening hours. rain is in the forecast. not just rain but storms monday and tuesday. i'll have more on that coming up

in a bit. richard and kristen. >> thanks, amelia. >> we are following developments in the middle east. israel is warning residents to stay away from hamas operatives. israeli forces are sending out leaflets, recorded and text messages to civilians in certain neighborhoods to be beware. israel says it is targeting sites where militants are launching rockets from gaza to its territory. the u.n. security council, the european union and the arab league are all calling for the latest violence to stop between hamas and israel. we've been watching rocket fire crisscross the sky above gaza and israel. the israeli iron dome anti-missile system is working. hamas fired at least seven missiles at tel aviv and the iron dome tracked those missiles and hit them head-on destroying them. coming up on "meet the press," david gregory will have more on the conflict. the two candidates in afghanistan's presidential

election agreed to audit the contested results. secretary of state john kerry announced the deal in kabul without the agreement both candidates could have set up competing governments at a time when the u.s. is pulling most troops out of the country. both candidates agreed to stand by the results of the audit and form a unified government. the federal government will not be sending immigrant children to our area. a vacant army building near westminster, maryland, was proposed as a holding site for thousands of kids. the carroll county board of commission quickly began protesting the obama administration's idea. according to the baltimore sun, the u.s. health department assured the commission children from the border would not be brought there. since october, 52,000 children from central america have illegally crossed the border and most of them have nowhere to go. it can take years for deportation hearings. president obama is calling the situation a humanitarian crisis. this morning investigators are trying to figure out what started a massive fire that

damaged three townhouses in frederick county, maryland. take a look. there's video that was posted on facebook. you can see and hear the flames coming from the homes on orndoff court in brunswick. it took firefighters 45 minutes to get a handle on it. one firefighter was hurt. check this out. a car crashed right into a restaurant in montgomery county hurting four people. this happened yesterday afternoon at hunter's bar and grill in potomac. the car went right through the french doors and nearly mowed down people inside. investigators say an 80-year-old woman and her husband were in the car. they were parked nearby and accidentally accelerated right into the restaurant. two people have been killed and 19 others shot this weekend in chicago. police say a domestic argument led to one of the murders. a 27-year-old man and his mother were shot multiple times. and the man died. the other murder was a result of a drive-by shooting. so far, this month, 23 people have been killed in chicago

bringing this year's murder count in the city to 207. a 15-year-old texas girl who survived an attack that killed her whole family says she's getting better every day. >> i would like to thank all of the first responders, nurses and doctors that have taken care of me. i'm feeling a lot better. i'm a very straightforward path to recovery. >> cassidy stay was released from the hospital friday two days after a bullet fractured her skull. the 15-year-old survived wednesday's brutal attack by playing dead. nbc dan shenman tells us how her community is rallying around her. >> reporter: hundreds gathered in the quiet suburb of houston to pause and remember six lives lost and to celebrate the amazing courage of 15-year-old cassidy stay, the lone survivor of the horrific shooting that took the lives of her parents and four siblings. >> as soon as it was safe, despite the terrible things she must have seen, at that moment she called police and told them

we were in danger. >> reporter: that call helped police find and after a three-hour standoff arrest ronald lee haskell, who faces multiple murder charges. >> without her courage and quick thinking, we might be mourning the deaths of 20, yes, i said 20, people today including myself. >> reporter: less than 24 hours after being released from the hospital, stay thanked first responders and the hospital staff who took care of her. >> i'm feeling a lot better. i am on a very strict forward path to a full recovery. >> reporter: despite so much grief she says she has found comfort. >> i know my mom, dad, brian, emily, becca and zach, are in a much better place and that i'll be able to see them again one day. >> reporter: an uncommon strength as a family and a community trying to begin to heal. dan shenman, nbc news. strong little girl.

lightning strikes killed two people and injured several others in two days in colorado. two different groups were hiking when struck by lightning inside the rocky mountain national park. both friday and saturday. the rocky national park service shared some advice on what to do to stay safe. >> this time of year, you know, we encourage our visitors if they're hiking to summits, for instance, to be starting really when it's dark, when it's 2:30, 3:00 in the morning. >> she says anyone who is above the tree line and sees dark clouds rolling in should take cover right away. social media slang. we'll tell you what -- we'll tell you the most popular terms used on-line and some you probably never heard before. we hadn't. >> that's right. from swimsuits to handcuffs, a beach town has a plan to deal with bad behavior from visiting beach goers. a hot day ahead before a work week shakeup. amelia will breakdown the threat for severe weather in the days ahead.

we profile many wednesday's children and this week a success story. victor found a family after his story aired here. they all recently stopped by our station for a tour. news 4's barbara harrison showed them around. >> i think i know who this is. is that victor. hi. welcome to channel 4. so great to see you. and this must be alex. >> it is. >> the new brother. >> reporter: victor was a wednesday's child who we presented on a couple occasions. on this day we met victor's new entire family. new mom. >> i'm caroline. >> reporter: new dad. >> tony. nice to meet you. >> who's this some. >> i am [ inaudible ]. >> very nice to meet you. >> and? >> i'm francisco. >> nice to see you. >> the nurse. >> i saw victor about four years ago on "wednesday's child" but at that time we were living in a home where we wouldn't be able to take in another child.

so you may want to mind your ps and qs leaders in dewey beach, delaware are considering buying portable detention units to stop bad behavior. dewey just has one holding cell. this is one of the portable ones they're thinking about getting. right now they have one and it hold six people. fewer than 400 people live in dewey but during the summer, upwards of 20,000 head to the beach town. organizers of the 2015 world police and fire games will be held on july 13th, 2015 at the reston town center in virginia. the event draws 12,000 police, fire and public safety advocates from 20 countries. for the tenth year in a row

a non-profit operating the food give waypy immediate help known as faith provides three months of free groceries to family in need. the next give away is thursday at 5:00. isaiah austin was a standout college basketball player until a rare disease destroyed his hopes of going pro. yesterday in baltimore the baylor university grad announced he will be the spokesman for the mar fan foundation. mar fan syndrome is a disorder that affects the body's connective tissue. any extreme physical activity like basketball can kill a person who has this disease. austin was diagnosed just before last month's draft and he had to quit basketball. austin will now work with the foundation to raise awareness about the disease. more and more people are looking to retire abroad to save money. >> some say the cost of spending their golden years in the u.s.

thunderstorms moving through the area. again, storm team 4, we will keep a close eye on monday and tuesday. cold front moves through tuesday evening and it does exactly what it says. brings in cold air. refreshing air arrives for the middle part of the week and lasts through friday. satellite and radar right now showing mostly sunny skies across the area. all in all today will shake out to be a partly sunny day. the hazy sunshine especially during the later afternoon and evening hours. 3:00 here on future weather, notice how isolated few and far between, this activity is. 5:00, it's keeping us mainly dry. now it does bring in some stormy activity around 10:00. i think it's going to arrive earlier. my forecast is storms as early as 8:00 p.m. this evening. and we could see some heavy rain within them. some strong winds that could produce isolated wind damage. overall, the threat of severe weather this evening, it is quite low. not necessarily the case for tomorrow and tuesday. i'll show you what i'm talking about in a second.

here's your planner for the afternoon today. a little bit breezy at times. it's humid and mainly dry. 94 is our high. we hit that at 4:00 this afternoon. 6:00, we're still at a hot 92 degrees. and again, storms start to enter the forecast really around 8:00 p.m. this evening. for tomorrow, high temperatures in the low 90s. upper 80s across the area. partly then mostly cloudy skies, humid again tomorrow with afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms likely. what we're going to be talking about tomorrow as far as severe weather is concerned, the potential for high winds and any thunderstorms that could produce wind damage and some hail. because of the threat of heavy rain as well there could be flash flooding around the area, but really keeping an eye on the high winds and hail, a small risk that we are seeing an isolated tornado develop. tuesday, also has a threat of severe weather. really looking at some heavy rain potential on tuesday as that front actually pushes through. 89 degrees for a high.

more than 100 dogs and puppies are headed to new foster homes this weekend. the animals were rescued from a puppy mill in lorray, virginia. a rescue group has been rehabilitating the dogs. julie kerry got to see their road to recovery. >> pretty significant tarter, not a lot of teeth remaining. >> reporter: he doesn't have a name yet. he spent most of his life inside a crate or cage, but this little guy is headed to a better life after his rescue from a puppy mill in virginia.

this ist the group known as animal rescue are found after a tip led them here. the page county sheriff's department was alongside to help. >> what we found was typical of a puppy mill. 132 dogs and four birds living in atrocious conditions. extremely me lly matted dogs, u burns. some had broken limbs that hadn't been treated. >> this dog is nearly blind. >> this dog has core knee yal adema. she's amazed at the dis position of the animals that have lived such a tough life until now. >> these dogs have been so sweet. i'm surprised. a lot of them, you know, we know they haven't had a lot of contact with people and have been so good. we haven't had biting dogs. been a little nervous but they've been super sweet. i don't think these dogs will have any problems finding loving homes because they're just so loving. >> that's where nearly a dozen rescue organizations like this one called mutts matter come in.
