colin montgomerie trudging up the hill here. a long week at oak tree, as he tries to become just the third player from scotland to win a usga championship in the last 87 years. earlier, we told you tommy armour was the first in the 1927 u.s. open at oakmont of all places, where monty had a shot back in 1994. >> you see gene sauers moving very slowly up that 18th fairway. dan, i can't help think back to that playoff on that british open where tom watson made a makable putt, a chance to win. went into the aggregate playoff with stewart cink and it was like he had no energy like. >> deflated? >> exactly. you kind of get that sense with gene. look at him, his head's down. i don't know, he said he hit a good putt on the final hole.
6:33 pm
it's almost like he resigned himself to the fact that was my chance. >> well, gary, i wrote down the year before the playoff started. i just wrote down par, par, par. >> i thought that -- >> that would do it. >> absolutely. two very difficult holes. >> to 18. >> sauers to play first, rog. >> 186 under regulation. >> coming in there. >> no question. i mean -- >> he's kind of maneuvering himself like it has been a hot day. hot week. cause see the heat index, still in triple digits here just past 5:30 oklahoma time.
6:34 pm
>> the shot is playingup hill from 20 feet, so you cannot agree where the ball will land. >> it's a hurting breeze but not as much as earlier. >> very high and right of the hole. >> that was right. well right. and that definitely sounded very deep rough. good news is, he's pitching the ball back up into the hill where the hole is located. but that's not what he needed. he needed a chance for a birdie. >> it is time for monty. >> he's playing very quickly, very decisive. he is just going to step up and go. >> this from ten yards closer than gene. >> short right shot. >> that's almost the exact
6:35 pm
location where sauers' ball landed in regulation and jumped forward. >> monty has given sauers a little life as they play the final aggregate playoff hole. th. listen up! yea! whoever can chip it over the bag and closest to the pin, wins the bag and everything in it. lets do it! it's never been more fun to have a mastercard. it can get you lessons with pros. access to tpc golf courses. ahh! oh my gosh. 8 time major champions, not eligible. psh, sneeedeker. and maybe... a priceless surprise. good luck. have a good day. your attention, please.
6:36 pm
it was the most amazing experience ever. >> you're not just playing for yourself. you're playing for your country. >> you're playing for each other. it's massive pressure. >> it comes down to one moment. >> ryder cup in september on golf channel and nbc. well, it has gotten interesting again. colin montgomerie with a one-shot advantage as they play the last of the three-hole
6:37 pm
aggregate playoff holes. and mark rolfing, have you had a chance to scout out what monty faces with this upcoming third? >> well, it's not a very good lie. i actually think that his shot is more difficult than gene's, primarily because he's got to go across this slope, the ridge, that bisects the back third of this green. he's going to have to play this well left of the hole. get the proper pace. and let it sort of feed down toward the hole. not an easy shot. >> that's going to go. he went under that ball. the ball was sitting up just a little bit.
6:38 pm
he grounded the club. he went under it and caught it right on the top. now, watch how deep the club goes. this is one of the tough thing about bermuda grass. see how he gets it on the top of the club and it came out just dead. but the ball's not all the way down at the bottom of that bermuda. you have to hover it up a little bit and make a more level swing. >> at this situation, you wonder if colin walked over to gene's ball. again it's kind of a mettle match play. you wonder if he had a shot or not. >> he did not, peter. it's where from the lie of the green is toward him which helps. >> up and down, this could keep sauers alive here. although monty is going to have a putt here to put it away. to get within a one-shot advantage. both have par putts coming.
6:39 pm
obviously sauers in there tight. >> gary, you mentioned colin's playoff record, 0-7-1. you think about how good he was in ryder cup singles. well, it's the same thing, really, when you analyze it. >> yeah, it really is. i guess maybe just the emotion of the ryder cup. who knows. you know, some of those wins, of course, he had with partners. so that helps. >> yeah. >> just unconscious putting at points in his ryder cup career which he later captained. >> he passed the magic of that ryder cup to ian poulter with the putter. >> yeah. 6-0 in two ryder cup records for this guy. stalwart through the years. and now has a chance to win it here.

6:42 pm
>> good luck next week. >> one of your life long goals was to win a usga event now that you've gotten it done how do you describe your emotions? >> that's the first usga playoff i've been in. lucky. two against any, i guess. all credit to gene sauers, brilliant play yesterday held again coming in. and i did as well. this is a great, great golf course. very difficult. if anybody thinks this is easy to win, believe me, come out here and try it. believe me, just ahead to the pga tour, it's fantastic to finally win a usga event. and a u.s. pga event about a month previous. it's been a great summer. >> congratulation, colin. >> thank you very much. if you missed any action, get caught up on golf central on golf channel. and a reminders the crown jewel
