news 4 viewing area. you can see the individual storms warned on now for being severe. this one coming out of fauquier county and along route 50 through parts of prince william county and entering western fairfax. the estimated time of arrival, 4:52 in chantilly. if it holds together long enough, mcclain by 5:00. another storm showing signs of strengthening, moving into parts of loudoun, montgomery and fairfax county. could be arriving in maryland about 4:30 this afternoon. keeping a close eye on these over the coming hours. severe weather is a solid bet for at least the next couple hours before things start to settle down. >> once again, chuck, we have that warm, humid atmosphere. the tornado threat is going to be on the low side. the high wind threat is there. the hail threat is there, too. we have a low to medium risk for

google play. remember, it's all free. a man is facing arson charges after he set off explosives outside his father-in-law's house. his maim is marc cassell. he went to their house and tried to force his way in. when that didn't work, he set off an explosive device at the front door and near the garage. >> we can't guess why he did it. what we know is, again, they were going through a divorce and custody dispute. >> no one was hurt when the device went off. the father-in-law identified him after seeing him parked out front. they later arrested him at a relative's home in fairfax county. a woman attacked a block from a d.c. college campus says it guy who did it was wearing cam flonouflag camouflage. it's near the university. police tell us they are scouring the area, looking for the video or witnesses as they try to find

a man with dread locks wearing camouflage pants. a man arrested for shooting three people in a car over the weekend is expected in court any minute now. an 8-year-old child witnessed the whole thing. the suspect's name is jimmy fleming. he's accused of opening fire on people. he was arrested yesterday afternoon at his home after a brief but tense stand off with police. news 4s mark segraves has more. a look at a new police video showing how thermal imaging and a helicopter helped police track down three armed robbery suspects. they were arrested for robbing a 7-eleven in capital heights. police followed them into the district where they stopped and ran into woods near the an costa

river. this is from the chopper crew that spotted them and guided officers ton ground to the spot where the men were hiding. tense moments at dulles airport. a jet made an emergency landing after hitting a bird. it happened around noon as the jet was making an approach to the airport. the jet was towed from the runway to the hangar. no one was hurt, but plenty of damage to that plane. your commute along 14th street should be smoother right now. that sinkhole is no longer tieing up traffic downtown. all lanes are open again. the sinkhole was first noticed last tuesday. it's located between constitution and pennsylvania avenue northwest. for days, commuters had to deal with lane closures. the sinkhole has been fixed. crews aren't shoe what caused it. faulty sewer pipes were not the

reason. >> well, we have to wait longer before a casino at the national harbor becomes a done deal. the prince george's county council was set to vote today. the decision was put off until next week. the design has already been approved. it will include a glass tower hotel, restaurants and high-end stores. construction could start by the end of the month. should children under the age of 5 be suspended from school? more than 180 pre-k students in the district were suspended or expelled during the 2012 or 2013 school year. black students were six times more likely than white students to be suspended. david says he can't imagine why so many young children needed such harsh punishment. he introduced a bill that bans the suspension or expulsion of children in city funded pre-k

nine arrests over the weekend at an abandoned quarry where a prince william county teenager drown last week. police stepped up patrols to keep kids away from it. family and friends say he knew

how to swim, but drown from muscle exhaustion. police increased the patrols, which is private property on i-95 and the bridge. just minutes ago, word from a grand jury in loudoun county from a man linked to three murders. he's been indicted on weapons charges. he's been indicted in may in west virginia. he was denied bond and a gag order in the weapons case. alexandria police wonder if it's connected to three unsolved murders over a decade. nancy dunning was killed in 2003. ron kirby found dead in 2013 and ruth ann was killed in february. he was not charged in any of the murders but is the primary focus. a mother is infuriated bowe

bergdahl is back on active duty. he will be assigned a desk job while the army investigates his disappearance from an outpost in afghanistan in june of 2009. is mother of a soller killed later that year says her son's unit was searching for bergdahl when they were ambushed. she calls bergdahl a desserter and they are trying to raise it. >> got an itchy rash all of a sudden? why your ipad could be making you break out and the one thing you can do to protect yourself right away. >> reporter: is your personal information being hacked from hotels and how the secret service is involved. i'll have that story, coming up.

>> reporter: lifelong d.c. resident out early for a walk to the barber shop on h street. he can't wait for d.c. streetcars to add to the revitalization of his neighborhood. >> get them going. they got to get the streetcars going. >> reporter: drivers beware of the return of the d.c. streetcar this month. it kicks off a brand-new parking ticket campaign today. >> i know nothing abit. >> reporter: here is what you need to know, how you park your car could get you a $100 ticket. if your tire goes outside the parking space and touches the white line, that's a violation. also, don't illegally double park and block the streetcar track. violators could also get towed away. you have gotten tickets in d.c.,

county. the southern most tip of loudoun county and fairfax county. all those in northern virginia. the entire area remains under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8:00. a watch means the conditions are favorable for severe weather. the warning means severe weather is in progress. you can see the big view. strong thunderstorms up and down the midmid-atlantic. for us, it's coming down to two or three individual storms. the first one is just now moving into western fairfax county. the track it's on is going to take us along route 50, 29 and 66. arriving in chan titilly right . 15 minutes before it gets to burke. east side of d.c. by 5:00 this afternoon. another storm is a strong thunderstorm in northern loudoun county. this is going to cross the

potomac. arrival time if you are in bartonsville, damascus, be on the lookout for 30 or 40 minutes for a strong, likely to become severe thunderstorm arriving in your area. lots of lightning. if you hear thunder roar, get inside. if you have friends and neighbors outside enjoying a summer afternoon at the pool, call them now and have them come inside. more showers across parts of northern maryland, not severe at this point. another cluster near culpeper that may intensify. two storms coming through metro and the other one near culpeper that is probably going to graze southern maryland 90 minutes or so from now. we'll be here to keep you posted on this as it progresses. it's 90 degrees in washington but the heat index is 97 degrees. everyone is going to be in the rain cooled 70s by late tonight. it's going to remain stuffy and

unexplained rashes. this after an 11-year-old san diego boy broke out in a rash that was later linked to nickel found in the ipad casing. nickel is a common allergy inducing metal. he got better after putting a protective case on the ipad. why some kids may be atmore risk than others. a richmond man says his hair stylist saved his life. three months ago, his stylist said she had been keeping an eye on a mole on his skal f. it changed so she thought he should get a doctor to look at it. she told his wife to make sure she follows up. >> as she always does. she said i notice something here that is unusual and different. you have a mole that is asymmetrical, the color is suspicious to me. >> sometimes people think i make a big deal, but i feel it's my job. >> turns out he had melanoma.

good afternoon, welcome back. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. at 4:30, right now, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect. >> let's get to storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. what's it looking like now? >> under the gun in fairfax county where the severe thunderstorm warning is in effect. it will be ending here in a few minutes. they may have to reissue the warning. they are under the gun through 8:00 this evening. as of now, the strongest, most intense storm is rolling into the western and central parts of

than a hundred homes. the strange smell permeated a neighborhood outside philadelphia. tests suggest the odor was ca e caused by a potentially deadly gas. now, there's a new theory. >> reporter: the odor that settled over 100 homes in the philly suburb sunday night was not only foul but scary. >> as soon as i walked in the house, i was like we have to get the kids out. something doesn't smell right. >> reporter: his family was among 150 residents who left their homes as hazmat crews moved in. >> as soon as i walked in the house, my meter went to an alarm with high readings. >> reporter: high readings of what they thought was hydrogen cyanide. they ruled that out by early monday morning. >> we are fairly certain that whatever it is is masking the meters and telling them it's hydrogen cyanide but it is not

that. >> reporter: still, evacuated residents were forced to stay with family and friends. others spent the night at the elementary school. >> we are concerned. my kids are with my mother. luckily they weren't home when it was going on. my daughter would be freaking out. >> reporter: by monday morning, crews zeroed in by a compound coming from sump pumps in the basement as the source of the odor and concluded residents can safely return. >> we are metering each house individually. as long as there's no reading in the houses, they can go back in. >> reporter: go in as authorities go to identify the compound that caused such a stink. chris clackam, nbc news. a man who conned his way into people's homes by pretending to be a cable worker. among the victims, muriel bowser. the man boarded a metro bus.

police believe this is the man who posed as a cable guy thursday and stole two cell phones after entering their home. the same thing happened on the same day to a resident on another street. a big milestone for metro is less than two weeks away. contractors have extensive work to do before the silver line is open to passengers. crews need to fix water leaks at some stations and install a special tape that keeps the electrified third rail from freezing. despite that, the line is still on track to open on july 26th. if it feels like you just can't get through part of montgomery county without hitting construction site somewhere, you are right. there's a stretch of bethesda going through road work grow b pains right now. itis between cedar lane and western avenue. we found road projects on every

a former university of virginia dean headed to prison for nearly a decade. barbara harrison is at the live desk with details coming in. >> jim, michael morris is sentenced to 106 months in prison after being convicted on child important charges. morris pleaded guilty in april to three counts. at the time of the arrest he was the associate dean of the school of commerce. morris shared explicit pictures of children and had more images on his home computer. at the live desk, i'm barbara

hackers trying to steal your identity at hotels. >> news 4 consumer reporter, erika gonzalez joins us in the studio with an alert for travelers. >> this is something to be wise about the next time we book hotels. here is an agency you don't normally think of when warning about hackers, the u.s. secret service. crooks are hacking hotel computers in business centers and getting away with things as sensitive as your credit card number. security blog first reported the problem. the crooks were able to see guests passwords, user names and credit card numbers. a number of those bad guys were arrested in texas. since there's typically no way to know if a public computer has been hacked, just go the safe route. if you want to create a throw away e-mail address and e-mail documents you need to print in advance. when it comes to car insurance, you may shell outlet more than

a big clean upright now at a campground in central ohio about 40 miles southwest of columbus. this is what was left after severe weather blew through yesterday. one person is injured after his

camper tipped over in the strong wind. other campers were damaged or destroyed. the storm was so powerful nearby interstate 71 was closed for a time. meanwhile, in parts of arizona, this is clean up day. severe weather pounded the tucson area last night bringing torrential rain and damaging winds. at one point, gusts were clocked at 66 miles per hour. the storm downed trees and power lines and ripped apart several homes. luckily no reports of injuries there. here in washington, traffic is about to get moving again at 44th and p treat. take a look. the intersection was closed after last night's severe weather brought down this tree and power line. look at the damage it did to these two cars. luckily, no one was injured here. >> going to be another long evening for us here with more stormy weather and those severe storm warnings. chuck? >> still facing a chance for severe weather the next couple

hours. this is a view from the reston camera to the northeast. the storm left the reston area and sunshine is appearing over the airport right now. looking to the east-northeast, a dark sky in place. the temperature is 90 in washington. 73 rain cooled degrees in manassas. 75 in hagerstown. want to get to the seven day forecast. here is the way the next couple days are looking. tomorrow, similar to today. a high chance for rain and thunderstorms tomorrow. some of them likely to be strong to severe. flash flooding higher concern for tomorrow than today. after that comes to an end, a couple absolutely beautiful days coming our way wednesday and thursday. partly to mostly sunny. low humidity. temperatures lower than average. nice open window sleeping weather wednesday morning and thursday morning. friday afternoon and the weekend, a little bit of that heat and humidity coming back. as a result, rain chances are back as well.

certainly won't be a wash out. back to what we are facing now. severe thunderstorm watch until 8:00. stongest storm is moving into the western side of the city of washington. inside the capital belt way right now. a prolific lightning producing storm heading to bethesda, chevy chase, southwest washington, fairfax and chantilly, woodbridge and springfield. the storm no longer has a severe warning with it. that doesn't mean you wouldn't see winds gusting 40 to 50 miles per hour in addition to the frequent lightning. another storm gathering in parts of montgomery county is moving to the northeast at 30 miles per hour. not as much lightning with it. they can reintensify quickly. it will have to be watched as it moves in howard county. it could slow down the commute there. another storm in culpeper. if it holds together, i-95 between woodbridge and quantico

the most expensive maritime salvage operation in history. last september, the ship was rolled upright. an unprecedented fete of engineering. the refloating will be just as difficult. 30 giant fuel tanked have kept it stable in under water flat forms. starting monday, compressed air will be pumped in to give the ship the buoyancy to stay afloat. after it's raised, it will be moved away before refloating can continue. the salvage master says that months of calculations came down to this. >> there's a lot of cracks in there. she's not pretty under water. there's a lot of cracks. some will get worse. we have to monitor them and see if they stop where we expect them to stop. >> reporter: the island's mayor says it's incompatible but can't

wait for the island to go back to the prestin paradise it once was. >> reporter: the refloating operation will last a week. the concordia will be ready to be towed away for the last journey to the scrap yard. if it keeps going like this, then hope that the concordia will be removed been a week and remain afloat. >> they are working within a specific window for this portion of the project because mediterranean sea is at the calmest from mid july to early august. right now at 5:00, severe weather threatening the region. this entire area is under thunderstorm watch until 8:00 tonight. storm team 4 meteorologist doug kammerer and chuck bell are tracking it from the storm center. doug in. >> we are watching the storms making their way through.

coming down through downtown d.c. right now. this is the line from north of baltimore to montgomery county and through the potomac and culpeper county. a strong storm here. this from the panhandle of virginia. western portions of washington county in maryland until 5:30 tonight. a big storm here is moving to the east. this is the storm here that we have been watching throughout the last couple hours. it had been severe earlier. we saw trees down associated with the storm. look at the lightning through downtown on the western portion of the beltway. more storms on gaithersburg up 270 and 95. we continue to watch the other storm making its way through the wood bridge area, mount ver nonthrough maryland and another storm around culpeper. not severe right now. there's no warning here. would not be surprised to see a warning come with this storm as it progresses to the east at 35 miles per hour. the backside of this, we are not
