gosk. >> things are going to change a bit today. >> i'm liking it. but you're seeing the changes already. i know i saw some rain drops in early. meteorologist chuck bell joins us with the forecast. >> good morning to both of you and a good saturday morning, everybody. plenty of clouds and yes, there are, indeed, a bit of light sprinkles out there this morning. sat slight and radar showed the picture when you saw a moment ago, here it is on storm team 4 radar now. not a lot of rain inside the beltway. a couple of very light sprinkles here near the panhandle. it looks a lot scarier on radar than it is. this is all extremely light rain. so don't count on a washout of a saturday. but don't count on much sunshine

here. mi mi mid-60s in the suburbs. plan on the 70s for the remainder of your day. just passing rain drops out there. i wouldn't spend a lot of time polishing the fender first thing this morning. more in a few minutes. back to you. new this morning, ukraine and pro-russian rebels have established a safe zone around the crash site of mh-17. this is allowing independent investigators access to the site. >> pro-russia rebels that control that area, they've been keeping ukrainian government from even getting to the site. new this morning the ukrainian government claims that pro-russian separatists took eight bodies from the crash site to the morgue. the rest of the victims' bodies are still out in the open. rebels are planning on transporting parts of the wreckage onto russian soil. nbc news has not independently confirmed those reports.

there's outrage saying the safe site around the site has come two days too late. >> investigators saying the integrity of the site have already been compromised. tom koth tell low has more. >> reporter: in square six miles rebel backed rebels have been picking through the wreckage of the passenger plane shot out of the sky without warning. in a nearby sun flower field, the bodies of passengers, their passports and possessions including tour books. "new york times" reporting sabrina tavernise. >> there were bodies strewn everywhere in the field and, you know, personal possessions, passports, bicycles. it was horrible. >> reporter: late in the day ukrainian rescue teams told news russian-backed separatists

ordered them out of the crash scene and there were shots fired by rebels. the separatists are thought to have already recovered the plane's black boxes. now a single ntsb investigator and two fbi agents are headed to kiev to assist. should a team be allowed in. >> what the investigators come up with isn't going to be the most relevant piece. for more important is the intelligence piece. what we see about where this missile came from and who fired it. >> reporter: malaysia flight 17 a highway in the sky used byñr airlines flying between europe and asia. even as war raged below, ukraine kept the air space open though some airlines did avoid the area. the faa banned american flights of flying over the region. after the crash they included

eastern ukraine. at the crash site, trying to recover the victims under constant threat. >> malaysia flight airlines mh-17 was shot down thursday by a surface to air missile. the question remains who fired it and why. u.s. intelligence showings the missile was shot from inside a pro-russian separatist controlled area. president obama said insurgents would not be capable of pulling out such an attack without russia's support. >> we're learning more about the only known american victim in the malaysian airlines flight 17 crash. guinn lucas johnson grew up in new jersey but lived most of his life in the netherlands. he was on his way to bali. >> we want to know why at the

moment and giving fault to each other. >> another passenger had connections to the u.s. carlin was a dutch citizen but was working on her chemistry degree at an indiana university. many were showing condolences at a vigil last night. people held hands while they walked from the bassy of ma the netherlands to the embassy of malaysia. >> it's horrible. and these people have nothing to do with the conflict. >> it's frustrating we can't do anything else. at least we can bring flowers. >> the netherlands embassy is going to open up a written registry on monday and tuesday for people to leave condolences. we're keeping an eye on all the developments on the crash. on the "today" show, more on ho

news4 got a look at the station before today's public tour. 60 new routes are coming to the silver line bus schedule. one is the route from wiehlie to the dulles airport station. the station has 2300 parking stations, a secure base, and a room for bicycles. >> this is actually fairfax county's first secure back room and it's part of the wiehlie metro here. there's this secure facility with free bike parking adjacent to us. >> the open house starts at 9:00 and runs until 3:00 in the afternoon. tomorrow the silver line will begin testing trains without passengers. the service will last all week until next saturday's open. the purpose is to give train operators a chance to get familiar with the route before you begin boarding. the test will cause delays the service. you could be waiting longer for trains on the orange and yellow lines as well. at the most you'll wait six

minutes longer than normal for a train. pub crawls in arlington may never be the same. today county leaders are preparing to create new regulations on them. bars should foot the bill for extra police and trash cleanup. today's vote could require bars to get a permit to hold the parties. the county manager will then decide how much the businesses will be charged. here's a reason to smile this morning. a free dental clinic in maryland. this is how packed it was for yesterday's clinic. one woman was sent into labor. some say it shows the need for affordable dental and health care. today's clinic is at north point high school. opened up about 11 minutes ago. it closes at 4:00. coming up, a capitol hill staffer due in court for the weekend. what will land him in front of a

new developments overnight in the fight between israel and gaza. israeli defense forces attacked 36 new targets as they continue invading the gaza strip.

officials say this invasion could last up to two weeks. early this morning palestinian fighters launched seven rockets into israel with three landing on the ground. nearly 300 people have been killed since fighting began 11 somedays ago. the united nations says 1/5 of those killed were children. we're learning the details of a large verdict awarded to a family. we're talking a $23 billion benefit. michael johnson sr. died of lung cancer in 1996. the family sued the tobacco company blaming it for johnson's death. we learned they saddled them with $23 billion for punitive damages. that's on top of the $17 million that the judge awarded johnson's family. a judge determined johnson was 30% responsible for his own illness because he was a smoker. however, the jury sided with the family. today we can learn why a

capitol hill staffer brought a handgun inside a house. he works for pennsylvania representative tom moreno. he went into the cannon house office building with a handgun and ammunition. they found the gun during a briefcase search. darcy spencer talked to him by phone. he says it was an accident. carrying a handgun without a license is a felony in the district. we're getting a new look at robbers trying to steal money out of your account. these photos show a man and a woman wanted for atm skimming. this is our first look at the female suspect. police say at least three men are also involved. the thieves install secret card readers. investigators say if you see a machine that appears to have something loose around the card slot, notify the bank immediately. new video just in of wind whipped fires fueled by hot

conditions. they're burning out of control in washington. look at that. right now massive wildfire is passing through two more communities. yesterday people who lived in the town of pateros, turned to rubble. people in nearby towns are now evacuating. so far the fireas blackened more than 260 square miles. really this started a week ago with just a series of lightning storms that sparked it. look what it has ballooned into. >> the weather must be dry out there for all that to be happening and the wind to be whipping around like that. >> pacific northwest known for cloud and drizzle and rain and all that. this is the relatively dry season for them. 260 square miles, the district of columbia is only about 60 square miles. so that's four times the area of the entire district of columbia. so that is one huge fire out there. hopefully they'll get that under control sooner rather than later.

for us around here, a little taste of the pacific northwest in summertime around here. plenty of clouds. a little light rain and drizzle out there as well bringing an end to our cool and dry stretch. we're going to stay cool through the weekend, but the dry weather is essentially over. it's not raining outside just yet. there's a live picture of capitol hill. plenty of cloud cover out there. and there'll be plenty of clouds on your saturday. but rain drops, it's not going to be a washout. little rainier out to the north and west of the city. right now downtown it's 74 degrees. but already everywhere along the chesapeake bay, but almost everywhere else down in the 60s this morning. 66 in martins burg. and there are rain drops along parts of i-81. haigerstown, martinstown. it hand added up to more than a few hundredths of an inch but it is enough to get your car dirty

temperatures working their way mid to upper 70s by late this morning. out and around this afternoon, again, a whole lot of clouds. maybe a sliver or two of sunshine. temperatures into the low 80s today. if you're headed to the ballpark tonight, the brewers and the nationals. cloudy skies, but i wouldn't wor about rain delays at all. here's our future weather forecast. we'll keep the clouds around through the overnight hours tonight and have a cloudy start tomorrow. i think tomorrow during the afternoon, a little bit of sunshine starting to work its way in. probably one to three degrees warmer tomorrow than we will be today. i think the second half of tomorrow will be the best part of your entire weekend. so that won't be too bad. clouds settle back in again as we head towards monday as well. i think our next best chance for everyone getting a substantial amount of rain probably comes up late tuesday into wednesday with heat and humidity coming back. yes. our vacation from the 90s,

new developments this morning into the crash of that malaysian airlines plane. this morning ukraine and pro-russian rebels agreed on a safe zone around the crash site on mh-17. american investigators now are headed that way to that area today. meanwhile those 289 bodies of the victims are still out in the open right now in ukrainian countryside. malaysian airlines says they are still working to notify all of the families of the victims. and possible new clues to figuring out who fired the missile on thursday. the u.s. says the missile was a russian-made buk missile unit. ukraine's interior ministry is releasing new video of a truck

there carrying the buk missile to the border. at least one of the missiles appears to be missing. u.s. intelligence says it was fired from inside an area controlled by pro-russia rebels. a hundred of those on the flight were on their way to attend the international aids conference in melbourne. last night we spoke to kimberly carrbaukh who was at the conference when they learned of the tragedy. >> everybody here is stunned and very sad. not only for the loss of the individuals who were coming to this conference, but for all of those lives lost as well as for the families that are dealing with this tragedy around the world. >> a moment of silence honored researchers lange and other victims. coming up on the "today" show, the latest developments on the malaysia flight 17 crash. you can also check nbcwashington.com and follow up on facebook and twitter.

a prince georges county security guard is recovering after getting hurt on the job. here is the scene. he was rescued from a bizarre crash. james fisher is a father and a well-liked person in the complex where he works. >> we spoke to friends and neighbors who say they weren't sure he was going to survive. >> reporter: tears of relief as

firefighters rescue james fisher, a security guard that was trapped after this minivan plowed into his booth. he works at this temple hills apartment complex. >> i'm grateful he survived. >> reporter: medics drove him to prince george's hospital center. tonight he is recovering in the emergency room. we showed his neighbor a video of the scene on nbcwashington.com. donna smith is amazed. >> i would assume he's dead. oh, my god. >> reporter: he survived. >> oh, my god. he's a really nice person. >> reporter: fisher was conscious and communicating with rescue crews. the driver stayed on the scene and is going to be okay. now the unanswered question, why did he crash? >> shocking to know that someone actually rammed into there. like, all this space and you decide to run right into the booth. >> reporter: police are investigating the crash. as for james fisher, he's

ear several years ago. wait until you see how doctors were able to reconstruct it for her. those stories and more as we get started on a saturday morning right here on "today." back to you. >> thanks so much. well, this weekend in vermont search teams will be out on lake champaign searching for a plane that went missing 40 years ago. they'll be using new technology to solve the mystery. jack thurston has more. >> i didn't think this would happen. >> reporter: christina coffey has waited years to see this. a lake scanning the lake for her father. >> you can't find piece until you find all the pieces. >> reporter: the tennessee woman's dad was the pilot of a jet like this one. in 1971 he was flying out of the airport in burlington bound for rhode island. but in near-blizzard conditions the plane vanished.

nikita, his co-pilot, and three businessmen on board from the south have never been found. they're believed to have died h when the aircraft crashed into the icy lake. >> i hate the fact that these men are still down there. that there's never been any closure. >> reporter: now new hope from new york and vermont state police and other agencies. they're crisscrossing an 18 mile square quadrant looking for piece of the plane to help solve this mystery using technology that wasn't available in the '70s. the search here will continue through the weekend with all sorts of technology from sonar to submersible robots. the goal is to see if there are any bodies intact in the wreckage and if they can be recovered. >> only god really knows where it is. >> reporter: the marine exploration group is helping. >> the pain they've been going through for 43 years now, it's

unimaginable. >> reporter: kate's late month was george nikita's sister. now living in california, she rushed to vermont four decades ago for the initial unsuccessful search. all this time wondering if there would ever be another. >> what would this moment mean to your mom? >> everything. and that has been, i think, the hardest thing for me is that she's not here to witness this. >> reporter: and and christina coffey are optimistic this will allow them to give george nikita a proper burial. >> he deserves that. news4 is on a mission to change minds. today we are looking at teen suicide rates and how the weekend can be especially deadly. news4's richard jordan reports that for those in a crisis, help is just a text message away. >> one of your residents is one of our clients -- >> reporter: these people answer

the s.o.s. that can save a life. northern virginia-based crisislink helps those around the region who are considering suicide. but the call center isn't just taking phone calls anymore. now text messages are coming in too. >> kids are much more likely to communicate through texting. they say that's their main source of communication these days. >> reporter: the new option started a month ago and the majority of texts come in on saturdays and mondays. >> i think saturday if everybody's out having a good time and you're not, it's a good time to call a hotline. mondays you're back to work, back to school and things aren't going well. it's a good too imto call a hotline. you don't have to be in crisis. you could just be struggling to reach out to us. >> reporter: and most teenagers would rather reach out by texting than calling. teens text an average of 60 times a day and 85% of teens say

middleway, martinsville. all getting very light rain this morning. those drops are tracking northeast bound into parts of frederick county. frederick, maryland, just a little light rain this morning. in and around the metro area, not a whole lot coming down just yet. i had about ten drops hit my windshield on the way in this morning. there's a lot of moisture to the south. most of this, the air mass that over head is fairly dry so it's going to eat up at lo of that rain. it looks like a big rain chance this weekend, it's really not. just a couple of sprinkle chances for today. your saturday starter, temperatures near 70. one or two sprinkles around. more clouds than anything else. your saturday afternoon, mostly cloudy. temperatures will make it up into the low 80s today. saturday night out on the town, clouds, yes, but not much of a rain threat on your saturday night. there's your future weather forecast. best rain chances there west of the blue ridge today. then drying up a bit.
