it appears a truck jumped a curve, took out a crossing signal and hit cars at a gas station. you can see it barely missed the pumps. no word on injuries that the point. it does not appear to have impact on traffic. we have a crew headed to the scene. we're also following breaking news in pennsylvania tonight. police say a doctor shot and killed a gunman who opened fire inside a hospital. earth ha investigators say this was in darby pennsylvania. when the patient went behind closed doors with the doctor and caseworker he started shooting. he killed the caseworker and grazed the doctor's head. the doctor pulled out his own gun and shot the shooter. the loss of life, wreckage, frequency of commercial jets

falling from the skies and stunning to say the least. it's the third tragedy in a week. the latest crash was an al jeer yan flight. this most recent event was probably bad weather and not terrorism. >> we've all heard the numbers. we're far more likely to die after getting in a car than getting a board a commercial jetliner. ex perts admit flying doesn't feel as safe as three major incidents in seven days. >> the latest airliner loss was like this flown by swift air in route last night in africa with 116 a board to algeria over mali. al qaeda rebels are active. some airlines won't fly here. the crew complained the weather was terrible before the plane apparently crashed. just yesterday a turbo plane crashed in heavy rain in taiwan.

israel says defense companies are working on ways to protect against surface to air missiles like the one that took down malaysian flight 17. coming up on nbc nightly news with brian williams tonight on nbc 4 after this broadcast. survivors say a tornado came out of nowhere. they're talking about the tornado that hit the campground in virginia this morning. two killed, three dozen injured. the vicious storm dropped hail the size of softballs on campers. jim has more on this. >> people at the campground say their cell phones began buzzing with weather alerts. the storm struck 30 seconds later. the tornado hit before 9:00 at the cherrystone campground 40 miles northeast of norfolk on the chesapeake bay. 1300 at the campground when the storm hit. the violent winds flipped campers and rvs over and knocked

down a countless number of trees. one tree hit two tents. a husband and wife from new jersey were hit and died. their 13-year-old son was in the other and is fighting for his life. thousands of others are treated for broken bones and cuts and bruises. one mother couldn't get to her kids when the tornado hit. >> as a mother, we try to protect them. i felt -- i couldn't get over there, so it was really scary. >> luckily they weren't seriously hurt. just outside the campground the tornado flipped a tractor trailer on its side. the driver said he saw the funnel cloud. the next thing he knew he was being thrown. he's going to be okay. minutes after the twister hit, one twitter user posted pictures of the scene along with the caption, quote just lived through a tornado.

children are missing, people are dead, trees are down, campers are flipped. now virginia governor terry mcauliffe is going to survey the area first hand. >> you can see how the trees snapped at tops. looks like they were twisted off. storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson is here with more details on the twister that hit the campground. >> yeah guys, this was all a product of the weather front, same front that moved through our area many the early morning hours. right along and south. the air was volatile. it was enough to produce spin. this whole area east of williamsburg, virginia. that pocket of south eastern virginia. these storms made their way around cherrystone. now confirmation in the area

from wakefield weather service, this was an ef 1 tornado. winds were 86 to 110 miles per hour based on their survey. this is a shot of the radar this morning. this is a tremendous amount of lightning with the storm. what we're seeing now throughout, still fierce storms. moving east of richmond, once again williamsburg and wakefield. they're about to get pounded under a severe thunderstorm warning. it's not far from where there was that tornado this morning. probably high winds coming once again. fortunately in the cape charles area for us just seeing showers now. a big difference in temperatures from the 100 degrees plus air yesterday. wait until the humidity drops. we'll look at the forecast for tomorrow and see if that hangs on for your weekend in a few. >> thanks. those storms caused problems for our football team at training camp today. dianna with how the team looked

inspite of the rain. >> this was not the ideal first day of= ? redskins training ca. it was wet and soggy. the second session was moved indoors because of storms coming in. this is football. anything goes and this team is happy to be back together. first year head coach making his first training camp decisions. first, practicing in the rain this morning and moving practice indoors in the afternoon. despite the wet and soggy conditions, robert griffin iii came out ready to go. first, problems on the first day finding receivers. he's confident in his offensive coordinator and head coach. number 10 sounds more comfortable this year in the coaching staff. >> it's really just a good thing to have two coaches that believe in you so sean and jay doing a great job, giving me a lot on my shoulders in the quarterback room. i cherish that. you want to be asked to do more

cancelled flights to that airport. delta and american airlines say they're still evaluating their plans to return to the airport. israel welcomed the move and says the skies there are open and clear. the situation on the ground however is not improving. at least 15 people were killed when a rocket strike hit a you united nations school in gaza. 200 others were injured in that attack. israeli military has neither confirmed or denied involvement. it suggested hamas may have attacked its own people. u.n. is housing 140,000 palestinians in schools across gaza. schools that are supposed to be considered safe havens. one hour and 57 minutes, that's how long it took for officials to execute a convicted double murderer in arizona last night. it focuses attention on a controversial drug used by the state. jay gray reports, now the

new video gives us a look at what firefighters faced when they arrived at a church fire in maryland. flames were shooting out of the roof of the episcopal church. the 241-year-old building was engoe engulfed before firefighters could get it under control. it's listed on the national registry of historic places science 1976. a child was screaming for help to save his grandmother trapped in a burning room. a teenage firefighter who was on the job a couple months responded to the call. now he met the family of the woman he saved.

this is the story only on news 4. >> we do a lot of stories about the problems with the d.c. fire department. this is not one of those stories. sunday morning this house was on fire. inside flames and smoke filled every room. an 84-year-old great grandmother was trapped in a rear bedroom. that's when a 19-year-old rookie firefighter went to work. today news 4 was there when that woman's son was able to thank that firefighter. >> thank you very much. >> thank you for saving my mom. i appreciate that a lot. >> the two men had never met before today, but they grew up in the same neighborhood here in northeast. now their lives are connected forever. >> i can't thank you enough. can't thank you enough. >> for antonio jones he knows his mother wouldn't have made it out alive without the bravery of the 19-year-old rookie. >> without his efforts, she wouldn't have made it out of the house because the smoke was

it gave the jury a lot to think about. they're still deliberating. he took a stroll tse as the jury deliberates his fate. it could be his last taste of freedom for a long time if he's found guilty on first and second degree attempted murder and assault charges. he's accused of beating his wife of more than 20 years. it happened november 24 of last year inside their home. according to testimony, an argument over installing a projection tv escalated to him spraying his wife's face with lysol, pushing her down steps, hitting her with a lamp, choking her and hold knives to her neck. the neighbor testifies she had glass coming from her hair, she was shaking and crying. >> the daughter and mother were

in the case at the time and asked to testify. >> the officer says what happened his wife fell backwards and hit her head on the lamp and he did not hit her with it. the state said that was an absurd argument. his wife was in court shaking and crying as she heard the testimony repeated again during closing arguments. we don't know how long the jury is going to be going tonight. we don't have word from the judge at this point. they're continuing to deliberate. the d.c. police department has put the officer on suspension pending the outcome of this case. >> thanks tracey. fred davis used to play with the football team, tight end there. he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to a charge of simple assault. davis turned himself into police this morning. he'll remain free until his next court hearing in august. this all stems from an incident that happened along 18th street in the adams morgan section.

according to the police report, davis and his ex girlfriend were arguing outside a restaurant last month. she says he threw dirt at her and threatened to slap her. he's charged with simple assault. he lives in leesburg. he's on suspension for violating the substance policy. d.c. police say they've issued five citations since the rule took effect. four were in southeast d.c. the new law replaces criminal penalties for having an ounce or less of pot with a $25 fine. lawmakers on capitol hill are trying to ban the law in a new spending bill. a man is out of jail after police say he took a loaded gun to capitol hill. it is the second time in less than a week that someone was stopped with a firearm at the capital. we're live at the superior court with new details in this.

>> jim a turkey farmer from south carolina in court today officially charged with carrying a gun on capitol hill. >> a 59-year-old turkey farmer from south carolina arrested at the cannon house office building yesterday after police found a gun in his briefcase. according to court documents police say it was a 9 millimeter ruger with a uncle mike's holster. they found run round in the chamber. he says he has a permit to carry a gun in south carolina. he has no such permit here in washington. now this is the second time in less than a week that someone has been arrested at the cannon house office building with a gun. last friday ryan, 26-year-old, aid to a pennsylvania

is not more damage from this. as you know, when you get a car or heavy vehicle hitting a gas pump, it can be a very, very dangerous situation. you can see the accident reconstruction investigators on the scene trying to trace the path of the truck. what police fire tell us is that three were injured including the driver of the truck. they're looking into whether this was possibly caused by a medical emergency. we have no updates on the condition of the three people that were taken from here by ambulance. obviously this gas station here at ox road is closed down. traffic on 123 is just a

he admitted they have a lot of work to do over the next two and a half weeks. practice is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8:30. news 4 sports. >> thanks dianna. let's move from redskins training camp to baltimore ravens. on the first day of full squad practice of training camp, ravens found out they'll be without star running back ray rice for first two games of the regular season. rice has been suspended for violating the personal conduct policy following the off season arrest for domestic violence. he hit his fiance and knocked her unconscious. security video shows him dragging her body out of an elevator. rice was fined a game check and can't participate in training camp and all of baltimore's preseason games. >> they fined him almost half a million. that will hurt. thanks. nightly news coming up next. >> we hope to see you for news 4
