news 4 at 11:00 begins with breaking news. >> a mistrial for the d.c. police officer accused of attempted murder. >> prosecutors say sampson lawrence beat his wife and threatened to kill her but the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. news 4 spoke to the state's

attorney live in upper marl bo are ro. >> good evening. tonight prosecutors say they are ki disappointed. sampson lawrence, iii, faced the possibility of life in prison. >> at this point, we have made the decision that we are going to retry the case. >> tonight a hung jury for sampson lawrence, the veteran d.c. police officer is accused of trying to kill his wife last november. >> are you surprised it was a hung jury? >> yes. we are surprised and disappointed. we certainly felt we had a strong case. >> prosecutors argued he beat betty lawrence inside their home after they argued over installing a proare injection tv. the argument allegedly escalated to sampson spraying his wife's face with lie sol, pushing her down steps, hitting her with a lamp, choking her and holding knives to her neck. she escaped to a neighbor's house. monday the neighbor testified. she had blood coming from her

head, glass in her hair. she was shaking, crying. she called 911. >> you can't read the minds of jurors. sometimes you have jurors who just feel there wasn't enough evidence. >> lawrence told police his wife fell back and hit her own head. his lawyers said the state's evidence wasn't up to par and shouldn't be believed. >> we feel comfortable with what we did here. we will look to see if there is something we would like to do differently. >> lawrence is out on bond. currently on extended suspension from the d.c. police department. i tried calling his defense attorneys. they were unavailable. tomorrow at 9:00 there will be a hearing and a judge will hear from the attorneys. basically the prosecutors are going to try to say he violated a stay away order. the judge ordered him to stay away are from his wife. sampson lawrence could go back to jail.

as for the new trial date, that's expected to occur tomorrow. we'll find out. >> thanks. new tonight, police are trying to find out if a medical emergency caused a chain reaction crash in fairfax county. a truck drove across traffic and into a gas station. jackie benson spoke to a woman whose car was hit. >> three people were taken to the hospital. two are said to be in extremely serious condition. take a look. given the proximity of the gas pumps this could have been much worse. hours after the crash page's ford explorer awaits a tow truck. the battery was ejected, a sign of the force of the impact. the suv was the first vehicle hit by an enormous blue panel truck that witnesses say careened across the road and plowed through the parking lot of the sunoco across from george

mason university. it became a scene of horror before 5:00 p.m. >> the aaa truck dragged the van. one of the guys who worked here was hurt. a lady he was fixing her car. >> the minivan was crushed, wedged between another large truck and a gas pump. the chain reaction are sent vehicles bouncing around the parking lot. this red are pickup truck collided with another pump. the pump remained in tact averting the possibility of more damage. thankfully nobody was waiting at the intersection as the truck knocked over the crosswalk signal. by the time the screeching of metal on metal stopped, six vehicles were damaged. ambulances were racing to the scene for the injured. >> if my truck was the barrier that slowed down the big truck, i would be thankful for that. a couple of people were hurt. >> reporter: we are told the driver of the panel truck was one of the people taken to the hospital. live in fairfax, jackie benson,

news 4. >> terry mcauliffe is cutting short a trip out west after a tornado slams into an eastern shore carp ground today just are before 9:00 this morning at the cherrystone campground. that's about 40 miles northeast of norfolk on the chesapeake bay. the twister flipped trailers and rvs and brought trees down on tents. a husband and wife from new jersey were inside one of them and died. >> the loudest screams came from the tent area. i ran over and saw a tree laying over a tent with little children -- with people in it. >> that couple's 13-year-old son was in in another tent and is in critical condition. dozens of others were injured. the governor will tour the damage tomorrow. >> after days of storms, heat and humidity we have relief headed our way. veronica, looking good. >> it is. the nasty weather front we

plotz visiting the mercy fitzgerald hospital for an appointment in the strpsychiatr unit. when he went behind closed doors with a doctor and a case worker he started shooting. he killed the case worker and grazed the doctor. the doctor pulled out his own gun and fired back. plotz is in critical condition tonight. the doctor wasn't seriously injured. >> children once again caught in the cross fire of violence in gaza. the united nations is condemning a rocket attack at a u.n. school being used as a shelter. 16 people died there. many of them childrenment hundreds more have been hurt. palestinian officials blame an israeli strike. but the israeli military hasn't said whether it was involved. the ban on u.s. airlines flying to and from tel aviv was lifted. the federal aviation administration temporarily suspended flights after a rocket landed a mile from the airport. >> a montgomery county firefighter is back from the war zone showing off shrapnel from

rocket attacks. he volunteered to work with the fire rescue service through emergency volunteer program. jason showed us photos and video. he responded to the first fire from a rocket attack just hours after touching down in israel. >> running to the shelter. getting the fire truck. actually responding to the result of the rocket attack. all of the sudden it became real. >> hundreds of firefighters around the country are standing by to be deployed as volunteers. >> the wreckage from the third airline disaster in a week has been found tonight. the charred remains of flight 5017 were found in mali. it was flying to algeria when it dropped off the radar an hour into the flight. this time weather is believed to have been are a factor.

the pilots asked to change course because of severe conditions. 116 people were on board. nearly half of the passengers were french. >> as the investigation begins the tragic tax of returning the victims of the malaysia airline crash to their families continues tonight. 74 caskets were flown from ukraine to the netherlands today. 193 people on board were dutch. today people placed flowers outside the barracks where the bodies were being held as they are identified. in an exclusive interview with cnbc tonight president obama said he hopes european nations will follow the u.s. in bringing tougher sanctions against russia as a result of the crash. >> it is also likely that it was conducted by nonstate actors that were provided powerful weapons from the russian government. that may stiffen the spine of

european partners moving forward. >> australia is sending 50 police officers to ukraine to help secure the crash site. >> tonight the american civil liberties union is calling for executions to be suspended after last night's botched are lethal injections in arizona. it took almost two hours to convict joseph wood. it should have taken ten minutes. witnesses say they watched wood gasp for air and convulsion hundreds of times. jan brewer ordered a review of the state's execution procedures. she said wood didn't suffer. this is the third prolonged execution in the u.s. this year are. >> new tonight, neighbors in southeast d.c. made themselveser heard on a new project to change the community. they went to a public hearing which has been proposed to be built at buzzar are d's point. the city is considering a land

a prince william county group home is responding to demands for information about children from central america being housed in the country. youth for tomorrow tells inside

nova it has a contract the to house children after they are detained. it says it's housed hundreds of children over a two-year period without the need for local assistance. the christian group home says the children receive medical care paid fsh by the federal government and they attend school not in county's public schools. the iteam tracking down new information about the number of children who crossed the border and have been placed in our area. according to the department of health and human services the federal government relocated 30,000 immigrant children nationwide since january. 2200 of them placed with sponsors in maryland. virginia has roughly the same number. 187 undocumented immigrant children are in the district. a senate proposal to deal with the crisis has stalled in the house with congress set to start the august recess next week. >> a deadly combination of heroin and a narcotic pain reliever is believed to be causing the spike in overdose deaths in maryland.

there is a new report out today that says over dose deaths were up 33% in the first quarter. 252 poem died from over doses between january and march. 148 of them used heroin laced with phentanol. there is a state over dose prevention council with a goal of reducing over dose deaths by 20% by next year. >> the new marijuana law has been in effect for a week now. there are five citations for possessions of small amounts of pot. four issued in southeast d.c. the law replaces criminal penalties for being in possession of an ounce or less of marijuana with a $25 fine. apparently everything stops for the presidential motorcade, even labor. a reporter in los angeles took this instagram video of a

pregnant woman forced to wait at a bus stop as the motorcade went by. witnesses said she had to wait half an hour before she could cross the street to get to the hospital. police say ap ambulance was called. the secret service said it is investigating this along with the lapd. >> a rookie firefighter raced through a burning house to save an 84-year-old grandmother in northeast d.c. amir johnson is so new he's still on probation with the fire department. that didn't stop him from braving a serious house fire on sunday. he checked three bedrooms in heavy smoke before he carried the woman to safety. he couldn't see. >> that was my second big fire. i never had to drag someone out of a fire. it was eye opening for me. >> the woman, nelly jones, is out of the hospital now. her son thanked johnson in

starting at noontime. not any widespread storms coming up. look. it is going to be hot and humid. we go from 83 at 11:00 a.m. to 92 at 3:00. sunday right now more scattered, widespread storms. sunday, parts of the area perhaps up to the north. there is a chance of us see ing a few severe storms. we'll keep an eye on that for sunday. best day for sure out of the weekend is saturday. again, we get the heat for the weekend but still looking at the cooling trend starting next week. not on monday. we are still at 88 for the high. look at the dry days we'll have coming up next week. not much in the way of humidity next week. not much in the way of any heat next week. also as we head into august. saturday is during the afternoon and sunday for sure. >> tomorrow sounds great.

concern. >> all right. thanks. from redskins to ravens. ray rice has been suspended for violating the nfl's personal conduct policy following his off season arrest for domestic violence. in february, rice allegedly hit his then fiance, now wife, and knocked her unconscious. security footage shows rice dragging her body from an elevator of an atlantic city casino. he was fined an additional game check but can't participate in training camp and all of baltimore's preseason games. rice released a statement saying he wishes to regain the trust of the people, especially the children, he let down because of the incident. let's go to baseball. the nationals were off today. the reds are in first place in the division, a game and a half above.
