her killer. cracking down on a dangerous stretch of road. and getting you ready for opening day. what you need to know before you ride the silver line. a cold case solved more than a decade after a 14-year-old's murder. good evening. gym vance is off tonight. erica smith was killed 12 years ago. her body was found in a shallow grave not far from her family's home. investigators now say they know who killed her, but they're not releasing his name because he committed suicide. her parents said the daughter's killer had no connection to the family. the fully decorated christmas tree is a reminder of the unbreakable nature of parents' love for their children. it's the tree she never saw in

cracking down on drunk driving on a dangerous stretch of road here the university of maryland. three people have died tries to cross route one in college park this year. >> reporter: well, that's right. university of maryland police are behind me. they set up this check point a few minutes ago. there's a sign that says you are now entering a sobriety check point. you can see the officers are over there. they are stopping people that they suspect of drunk driving. >> we were out here tonight to take impaired drivers off the roadway. >> reporter: universit of maryland sergeant wants you to drink responsibly. >> we're out here as an educational awareness. we're out here looking for impaired drivers and we want them off the roadway. >> reporter: three people have died crossing on route one this year. earlier this month, a drunk

were up. but had they been asleep and more people in the tents and campers, i think what occurred here yesterday would have been much worse. >> a new jersey couple was killed when a tree fell on their tent. their 13-year-old son is still in critical condition tonight. >> developing tonight, the governor's former political rival is now being called to testify in a kupgs case against a former governor. ken cuccinelli could be a witness for former governor bob mcdonald and his defense team. he's accused of accepting loans and gifts from the former ceo of a dietary supplement company. women who were secretly photographed while visiting a johns hopkins gynecologist will now have to describe their trauma before they see any money for damages. the hospital reached a $190

million settlement with a class action lawsuit on monday. it steams from the actions of this doctor who recorded his stateme pati w a pen camera. they say the only way to split up the money is to determine how much trauma and pain the doctor caused. he committed suicide before we could be put on trial. maryland's largest casino is hiring and looking to one of america's most famous gambling cities for employees. they will hold job fairs next week in new jersey. as many as 8,000 casino workers in the town could be out of jobs because of the business lost. they hired 50 workers in january. they hope to match that number next week. montgomery county police say a man who crashed into a house this morning has died. 83-year-old thomas brown had a

medical emergency before the crash. an autopsy will determine how he died. nobody else was hurt in that crash. now to the crisis in the middle east. we could be just hours away from a temporary humanitarian cease fire between israel and hamas. they say they will pause fighting for 12 hours starting two hours from now. today, israel rejected a seven day cease fire proposed by u.s. secretary of state john kerry. more than 800 palestinians and 36 israelis have died since the conflict began more than two weeks ago. some scary moments today for a plane full of passengers. >> get down. >> still ahead, what sent fighter jets to escort this plane out of american air space. and a firsthand look at how metro's silver line could sav

get down. hands up. >> hope you never see something like that on your flight, right? but today a plane full of passengers saw firsthand the swift response to a bomb threat on board. the sun wing flight had just left toronto when a 25-year-old man started cursing and threatening to blow up t plane. pilots made a quick u turn and u.s. fighter jets were deployed to escort the jet back to toronto. >> it was extremely scary.

they came in front and back of the plane. they yelled hands up, heads down. it was just awful. kids were scared. i was scared. >> the suspect now faces four charges including endangering the safety of an aircraft. tonight, the city of philadelphia is offering a $100,000 reward leading a arrest in the deaths of three children. a stolen suv plowed into a group of people on a street corner this morning. the children ages 7, 10, and 15 were all killed. their mother was critically hurt. the two men jumped out and ran away. after years of planning and debate, the opening of metro's new silver line is now just over 12 hours away. it could save time for thousands of commuters. we rode along with one of them this week.

today, completely different circumstances. over 8,000 fans attended the second day of training camp today and those fans were greeted by a special guest. >> reporter: sunny skies and big smiles on day two of training camp. super bowl champion coach john gruden was on the sideline. the biggest piece of advice for his little brother, patience. >> you can't change every single thing in one practice. so just take the best out of every day. build blocks every day. if you do that, good things are going to happen because the program will work. >> reporter: in that program, a deep roster of receivers, the fastest and flashiest. but another one is catching griffin's eye. >> i think all of them are doing a great job.

here's a trend from paris that a lot of travelers would like to see catch on. five hotels are offering to let customers pay whatever they think is fair. from this monday through august 10th, patrons can name the price of a room. they fill out a questionnaire after the stay explaining why they chose that cost. one hotel manager says his guests will pay well, however, he says he's not going to make this program permanent. i bet those hotels are already booked.
