tomorrow night could really be kind of bumpy. we're going to be watching that very carefully. outside this morning there's the view over the town center. plenty of clouds in the sky this morning and a couple of rain drops as well. here just east of gaithersburg. easy for me to say. headed out here towards laurel and jesup in maryland. and more showers to the west of i-81. this ripple in the atmosphere will bring a cloudy start to the day and a quick chance of a shower. then with the daytime heating we may bubble up more chances this afternoon. generally in the upper 60s and low 70s. mid-80s near lunchtime. we'll talk more about the severe weather chances for tomorrow coming up. back to you, guys. >> thank you. new this morning a man is dead after being shot in the district. this happened just after midnight in the 200 block of savannah street there on your map and southeast.

d.c. police say he was shot in the back and taken to the hospital where he died. right now we are working to find out a motive in the shooting. also new this morning, a woman is missing in fairfax county. 62-year-old mary gibson is from springfield. she went missing after going out to walk her dog yesterday afternoon. gibson's family says she needs medicine but doesn't have any with her. she has brown hair and blue eyes and is only a few inches over five feet tall. if you think you see her, call fairfax county police. today is the day. metro's silver line will be open and ready for you to take a ride. the grand opening is this morning at the wiehle station. everyone will be there for the ribbon cutting ceremony. the first inaugural ride will be at noon. the first face of the silver line brings five new stations.

it will run from wiehle weston east to largo town center in prince george's county. this new line will change how thousands of you commute around the area. especially getting to and from work. in some cases the silver line will save you time and money. news4's northern virginia reporter david culver rode along with one commuter this week to see how her trip will change. >> reporter: if only nadia's daily commute from d.c. to tyson was this easy. >> i made it. >> reporter: but nadia's trek to tyson from her home took more than an hour. her route brings her over the key bridge. she's used to seeing a lot of red. does this frustrate you or is it just part of what you're used to? >> i'm used to it.

>> reporter: but that doesn't mean she's not eager for another way. >> the thing with the metro, you can kind of sit down and relax. driving you can't really do that. >> reporter: i joined her on her drive. at first all looked pretty smooth. >> might be lucky today. there's almost no traffic. >> reporter: but that quickly changed and we sat and sat. >> it gets frustrating when it's not really moving. >> reporter: which is why come monday nadia wants her view to change from this to this. it's a look from on board the new silver line. she's willing to test it out. she says her commute will look something like this. taking a bus to columbia heights. switching to the silver line and then riding it out to tysons. but back to our road trip. after 43 minutes we finally made it onto route 7 getting closer to her work place. >> finally. >> reporter: alas, she makes it to work. does it feel good when you come to this point?

her. >> smith's murde was the first murder case in louden county. prince george's county police say yesterday afternoon a man tried to drag a girl away on landover road. officers say he pretended to be a police officer and grabbed the girl who was walking with her 8-year-old brother. police say this man, michael mclong, tried to pull the girl into a nearby shopping center. a person driving by saw the struggle and stoppedo confront him. then an offduty officer and a security guard held him until police came. police right now investigating whether mclong has done is befor today secretary of state john kerry will continue to work toward having israel and hamas put down their weapons. the two sides have agreed to a 12-hour humanitarian ceasefire today. yesterday kerry spent hours negotiating a week-long truce in the fighting, but no deal was reached. israel says they need to shut down gaza's mill stair tunnels

and rocket launching sites. hamas insists israel lift its blockade at the border. nearly 900 people have died in the conflict in the past three weeks. later this morning your safety is at the forefront in prince george's county. public safety employees will hold an active shooter drill. more than 150 police officers and other law enforcement will react simulating what to do in that type of an emergency. the training begins less than an hour from now at 7:00 at the courthouse on main street in upper malboro. mark warner and ed gillespie will face off as they run. the debate is hosted by the virginia bar association. it begins at 11:00 at the

greenebriar resort. which means you'd have to leave about now to make it there on time. watch out driving in crystal city today. there's a 5k going on there tonight and some roads will be shut down. you can see crystal drive next to the metro will be closed. you'll also have trouble on 12th street and long bridge drive. you can still go to the mall and shop, but they may be hard to get to. the race is called the crystal city twilighter. it begins at 6:30 tonight. today the men who gave their lives during the korean war will be immortalized forever on stamps. 13 men who were awarded with the medal of honor will be honored. they will dedicate them this morning at arlington national cemetery. the collection is called medal of honor, korean war forever stamps. happening today, the washington redskins begin their third day of training camp. we meet some of the loyal fans

pope francis could be coming to the u.s. next year. the archbishop of philadelphia says pope francis is planning to taenld the world meeting of families. it's set to take place in the city of brotherly love next september. the vatican has yet to confirm the visit but says the pontiff is interested in visinghe event. you could eventually live in one of 400 new apartments at the landmark mall in alexandria. the corporation wants to transform the center of the mall into a mixed use living and shopping space. that means hundreds of thousand of feet in new retail stores.

the mall has been on t decline for years. head to nbcwashington.com for a link where you can comment on the new plan. just search landmark mall. maryland's largest casino is hiring and taking its job fare to one of the most famous gambling cities. maryland live will be in atlantic city looking for new employees. several casinos there are set to shut by the end of the summer potentially leaving thousands without jobs. maryland live hired 50 workers in january when the atlantic club shut down. it hopes to match that number next week. fans are making their way to training camp. we check out all the action in richmond. plus here's something you don't want to happen at the happiest place on earth.

montgomery county police are investigating a deadly crash in potomac. yesterday morning 83-year-old thomas brown crashed his car into this house on gainesboro road and did not survive. chopper 4 was over the scene soon after the crash. police say brown had some medical emergency behd the wheel. no one inside the home was hurt. right now more than 180 people are finally in panama after their flight was diverted twice. we told you what happened the first time the flight left canada. the plane had to turn around and a s.w.a.t. team came on board to

arrest a man making thrts. on the plane's second try, someone had a medical emergency, so they landed in jamaica. all in all, this trip took more than 15 hours. visitors at disney's california adventure had a ride stall. it stopped at 7:30 when people were on it. some kind of technical problem shut the ride off. guests were escorted down a walkway on the side of the ride. the roller coaster was tested once everyone was safely off and it did run normally. california screaming is the park's fastest ride with a top speed of up to 55 miles an hour. now we're just hours away from the train hitting the tracks on metro's new silver line. a lot of you want to know how much this new route will cost you. first 4 traffic's melissa malay

training camp. so maybe that's going to toughen them up just a bit. >> we hope so, right? >> unfortunately our rain chances, we're not done with them quite yet. we're just now getting into the beginning of the weekend. that's not necessarily good news either. there are an abundance of clouds outside this morning. there are rain drops to deal with first thing. we're going to have hit and miss rain chances today and on into tomorrow as well. so i wish i could give you the 100% don't forget forecast but we have to stay weather awar through the weekend. an increasing threat for what could be severe weatheromg in sund nht. especially late sunday evening into the late sunday night hours. 73 degrees, plenty of clouds outside right now. not much of a heat index to worry about. we will have heat index values into the low to mid-90s today. it will be plenty hot and humid. martinsburg at 65.

low 70s inside the capital beltway. and low 70s on the western shore of the bay as well. the weather impact on your saturday, fairly low. a rumble or two this afternoon but the impact on today will be fairly low. tomorrow that may be a different dial. already outlined this area to our west for a risk for severe weather today. and that threat area will be moving into our area for tomorrow. so this is going to be a very busy forecast for not only tonight but into tomorrow as well. showers out there first thing this morning across parts of northern pennsylvania, maryland, towards the i-81 corridor. couple of rain drops about 30 minutes away from winchester. martinsburg also goi to get a couple showers. right here moving onto i-95. just north of laurel and columbia. that's also movi off to the east. couple more sprinkles . so that's the hit and miss chance for this morning.

by about lunchtime, we'll start to break out into a bit of sunshine. temperatures with anhi at allill make into the upper 80s and low 90s. our future weather forecast, it doesn't look like much on the computer models. just a few hit and miss chances. that's where the best rain chances will be later on today. things will be generally quiet overnight tonight though i couldn't rule out a passing shower. there's a little rain chance early on your sunday. and then tomorrow late morning, another chance for showers coming back in. and tomorrow afternoon that's when the rain chances really start to ramp up quite a bit. and sunday night into monday morning, that's when we have to worry about severe weather. with all this in mind, here's your seven-day forecast. probably going to have to worry about wet weather. we're going to have a weather alert day. an opportunity for severe weather tomorrow afternoon. and that will come with all the usual suspects. not only a high wind and hail, but there will be a tornado

tonight is the last night for awhile you can enjoy a drink or two on the rooftop of the w hotel in downtown wasngn. after today the rooftop terrace and lounge are closing there. they are renovating the space and this is how it will look when the work is done. you'll be able to go back to the roof there this september. tonight you can take a ride on the streetcar route just not in a streetcar. pedicab will be offering rides. the event is called streetcar stroll and roll. it's designed to encourage people to visit h street in northeast and see all the changes before the streetcars come. the pedicabs will drive you from h street to union station. rides will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. today. we are counting down to the opening of metro's silver line. >> we'll take a look at all the big changes you need to know.

it is july 26th. >> let's check out the weather on this saturday morning. meteorologist chuck bell says summer is coming back. that means rain, right? >> you bet ya. after the vacation yesterday, the humidity came back tonight. there's plenty of clouds coming out. and hit and miss rain chances will linger not just into the front part of your saturday morning but really through much of your weekend forecast. it's not going to rain all weekend, but you will need to keep a weather eye onthe sky. first thing this morning, a couple showers near woodbridge. also a couple of showers here north of columbia. it's all part of a ripple in the atmosphere which will keep the morning cloudy and i can't rule out a passing sprink tou much oer. then an afternoon thuerow may bubb up as well. out the door temperature, upper 60s and low 70s. near 90 for a high today. rain chance today only 30%.

but 60% chance for rain tomorrow with a threat of severe weather tomorrow evening. more about that when i see you in a few minutes. for now back to the news. >> thanks so much. after years of planning, billions of dollars, and what seemed like endless pot wrangling, we are just a few hours from metro's silver line becoming a reality. it will mean big changes for thousands of you who commute. adam tuss has what you can expect if you board in tysons corner. >> reporter: the silver line is just about ready. five brand new stations, four in tysons corner, one in reston. take a look at this map and you can see the silver line stretches across the entire region. it'll run from largo in the east through d.c. all the way to reston in northern virgia. it matters for riders like dee camara. she says she can now take the silver line to her door office in tyson. will you take it to tysons

corner when it opens up? >> oh, yes, i would. >> reporter: and what should you expect when you come here to tysons? it isn't all monuments and beautiful gardens. much of tysons corner is still a work in progress and under construction. but of course e mall is here and plenty of people will use the silver line to get to their jobs. >> i've been told it will make my commute about 30 minutes shorter. >> reporter: really >> yeah. >> reporter: brianna can now take the metro here. listen to what she's had to do. >> i take the metro to the church and then i take the bus to mcclain. >> reporter: she says there are plenty of people with similar stories. when all is said and done, 50,000 new trips per day will be added to the metro system. right now average daily riders trip is about 750,000 trips a day. after the silver line, metro expects that number to jump up to 800,000 trips per day.

>> drink responsibly. if you feel as though you cannot drive a motor vehicle, call a friend, call a taxi. >> three people have died trying to cross route 1 this year. some families say they want their moneys worth for moems they may never be able to go back to. more than a dozen families were displaced after a landslide. right now six homes are considered uninhabitable. people there say it's not enough money to cover everything. it will be a weekend of picking up the pieces of virginia's eastern shore where a deadly tornado slammed into a campground thursday. forecasters say it was an ef-1 with winds up to 100 miles per hour. governor terry mcauliffe toured the campground yesterday where campers, tents, and trees were still mangled and twisted.

on her loans. then she heard this ad. >> how you could potentially have the remaining balance on your student loan debt forgiven. >> reporter: she called and the company told her she could go over 400 to $49 a month. >> everything sounded great, but i was still just a little cautious because they were requesting funds up front. >> reporter: that, said illinois attorney general lisa madigan, is a scam. one sharon brown didn't fall for. >> they claim they are experts who can cut your student loan in half or have it forgiven, but of course the scammers want you to give them your credit card number or bank accountumr. >> repoer: illinois is the first in the nation file suit against two companies accused of telling students to help reduce debt. >> never pay for information about how to pay back your student loans. >> reporter: good information for 22-year-old grad student

no commuter parking. just last week we were the first to tour the new garage. it's five levels and just for those riding the metro. but the fear of it filling up inspired area management companies to lock up, towing enforced. some companies hoping their employees won't need to use their parking. instead they want them to ride the rails. >> so you're going to take the escalator down there and walk. in a few months they'll be opening up a sidewalk from right there to right where we are basically and you're in the building. so rain or shine, you're going to only have 50 feet to walk. >> reporter: the ceo is so excited about the new metro, he's going to move 600 of his employees four blocks down the street. they move in next week. >> getting out of the subway -- sorry. that's my new yorkism coming in. >> reporter: you can see christina hill's a new yorker.

just moved here in april. neither she or her husband own a car. a big reason she took this job? metro. right now she takes the bus. >> it's a little long. it takes about an hour and if i'm working late, it takes an hour, fifteen minutes. so i'm eagerly awaiting the silver line. >> reporter: david culver, news4. >> you can take a virtual ride on the sill vever line before boarding today. go to our website nbcwashington.com. we posted a link on our home page. lots of you are going to get a check many the mail this week thanks to the affordable care act. part of the act says insurers have to give you a refund if a company spends more than 20% of premiums on operating costs instead of medical care. 7 million people will receive some kind of compensation. the average family refund will be about 80 bucks. google and microsoft have agreed to add a kill switch to the next versions of their computers and smartphones.

a stormy finish coming up to your sunday afternoon and evening. and a severe weather threat for late tomorrow, tomorrow night into early monday is climbing. so that is not necessarily good news. tomorrow likely to become a weather alert day here. the timing late sunday and sunday night probably going to be a line of strong storms. and the main threat, damaging winds and a lot of lightning tomorrow. and even a tornado threat as well. good chance to remind you to download our weather app. keep the forecast in the palm of your hand when you need it. we're not the the outlook area today, but if you're flying out for chicago, cincinnati, st. louis, that's where the bad weather is going to be today. this is a moderate risk for severe weather here. illinois and indiana. then for tomorrow notice that whole area moves to the east. we're going to be in the slight risk. but the moderate risk for severe weather just back to our western doorstep. and that risk area is going to come through here sunday night. so that could really be trouble for us late tomorrow.
