spokesperson phil stewart. what can you tell me? this is a day a lot of us might not have seen coming. >> you summed it up. this is something the region has been talking about literally for a decade. when you think of the economic impact, the second largest economic hub in the region now linked to downtown d.c. with the silver line. it's huge for the region both economically and for people getting to places they couldn't get to before by rail. >> reporter: people should know there's another phase being opened that won't open until 2018. >> for now we go to wiehle-reston east he. a lot of the bus shifted over. they'll be operating out of here as well as some other virginia bus companies. >> reporter: how crowded do you expect it to be? there's still a lot of development. do you think there g to be a significant jump in ridership

9:05 am
will be for the silre? >> reporter: ridership won't be what it would be during a normal weekday, but metro says they expect a significant jump in all 750,000 trips are taken. after it ramps up, after we get through the fall period into the winter period where everyone's here back from summer break, expected to reach 800,000 trips a day with the addition of this line nap is a staggering number for our transit system. when people were planning the system back in the '70s, i don't think they thought they would ever get to this point. but here we are talking about the possibility of 800,000 trips a day. it's going to get crowded in there, now it's time to talk about how we expand the system and make it comfortable. probably with longer trains. >> that is significant. thank you, adam. we'll see you in a bit. first 4's traffic melissa

evening into tomorrow night. for now back into the studio. >> thank you so much. the silver line will begin running in less than three hours. today's opening will -- adam tuss has followed this from the beginning. it's at the wiehle reston east station where everyone i excited a nvo awe >> reporter: we have followed this from the beginning. it's been years and years and years. sometimes seems like decades. but take a look. for the first time we've got the metro silver line smart trip card. let's give you a look at what's going on here. look off in the distance. you can see the trains are actually on the tracks. of course the training have been running here on the silver line this whole week. look beyond that. that is reston town center there. this is about a mile and a half from reston town center. people want to know where it is
9:34 am
in relation to the whole area. of course, you can walk that, but there are also buses that go from wiehle to reston town center. so you're able to get back and forth to some of the places that you know about. this is what the wiehle-reston station looks like. there are pedestrian connections up here that go above route 7. these are so important to the stations online here. this is the chief of police for metro transit police. ron, obviously you guys -- i've heard you have to police moving geography. now we've got even more geography to police. talk to me how you're paying attention to these lines. >> we have a great relationship with the police so we're looking forward to this grand opening event. >> reporter: what wod you say is the biggest challenge out here? these are new stations you have to learn, things you have to be aware of. you're obviously deeper into fairfax county now. eventually you'll go into

louden. that's different t k. some of these stations are way high in the air. how do you train for those? >> it is. each station brings a lot of challenges to us. we've had some drills to get up to this event. now we're just going to continue our training. table top exercises, full scale drill exercises. continued partnership with the local responders. >> reporter: any message for the bad guys that you're going to be paying attention. >> we have a great bunch of guys and gals out here ready to do police work. we're looking forward to this grand opening event. >> reporter: thank you, hief so just about two and a half hours now until the first silver line trains roll through the silver line. the first station's in tysons corner. they open at 11:30 this morning. and this adds 10% to the entire metro system. quite a change. >> this is such a big deal. you know the key to all of this working is getting people to use
9:36 am
it and get out of their cars, right? >> reporter: yeah. i think the most important thing that people need to know about these new silver line stations -- don't forget the silver line will go through largo town center through d.c. all the way out here. so it is this regional system. as far as these phi new systems in virginia, this one right here is the only one that has a true parking lot. one that you'll be able to take your car, park, and get on. the stations in tysons corner do not have that. you are being encouraged to walk, to bike, to take a bus. the bus systems will be so important to those stations. they don't want people driving to those stations because they want tysons to develop into this urban, livable, walkable downtown. i've heard some people dcri it as a mid-town manhattan kind of feel. by the way, the leaders here are not shy about how they think the new tysons will compete with washington, d.c. so we'll have to see how it all develops. >> thank you so much, adam. >> the silver line is bringing
