all aboard. right now at 6:00, the moment finally arrives for metro's much anticipated silver line. our cameras there for the big reaction, even the first delay on the newine this is it. after billions of dollars and years of construction, the weight is over. metro silver line is open for business. and good evening. chris lawrence is off tonight. it's a historic day for metro and for our region. hundreds of people wanted to see it in person. we begin our coverage with

transportation reporter adam who was there for the big moment. >> reporter: before you n ke a ride u veo t ri. and after that, the silver line officially opens for n huge crowds waiting to hop on board. the silver line pennant the keepsake of the day the. imagine beating train operator of the day. he is getting ready for it all. >> at first i said this is real serious. yes, i will do it. that's when the nerves set in. >> reporter: a whose who of dignitaries shipped in. we caught up with the head of metro. rich, we're walking in. did you think this was into happen? >> ably it has led us here. we knew we were going to get here. we're here today. we have hundreds of customers waiting to get out of the first train. it's just a wonderf d words are hard to express to get

this moving. >> reporter: and the cro d come out orc this is the first silver line train. we are on our way to tysons corner. i think everyone is excited, right? >> yeah! >> reporter: got trartioli. >> the most holistic thing ever. the silver line. the first train. >> reporter: it was one of the first to go through the fair gates and get on the train. she lives within walking distance of the train right now. >> we have been waiting for so long. my goodness. finally. >> reporter: a smooth ride. there were hiccups. one trainover shot by four car lengths. it had to reverse and was delayed for about 10 minutes. for others, just the thought that they can now let someone else do the driving is what matters the most. >> for me just to have the convenience and have all of this

around us. that's what i love about living here with my family. >> reporter: no more waiting. the trains are here. this afternoon metro said on twitter that within just three hours almost 10,000 people used one of the new silver line stations. based on some of those crowds, it's no surprise that metro expects the silver line to bring thousands of new riders every day. until now, metro has handled 750,000 riders on the average day. that's about to change. over the course of the next year, it could shoot up to 800,000 trips a day. that means a lot of people to protest. >> we have a great line. we're ready for it. >> the chief says that the biggest challenges are the silver line's elevated tracks. he said metro will continue to hold drills and training exercises to help law enforcement get used to the new terrain.

we have team coverage of today's big grand opening. darcy spencer is live in tysons corner. does it take riders straight to the local hot spot where they can spend a lot of money shopping. >> reporter: that't. l give you a layout of the land. this is the pedestrian bridge over 123. people walk to and from the station. right across the st the station. the platform, people waiting for the next train to arrive. as you said, this is a big deal. everyone we spoke to came out here for one reason, and that is to go to tysons for shopng. the day is finally here. trains are running along the silver line in northern virginia. they are flooding into t tysons co stao this man brought his 4-year-old tristan from d.c. >> he wanted to catch the train. he was really excited t i we decided to get on a train and

spend a day out together. >> reporter: the new stop is golden for tysons corner mall. many passengers came from the district in montgomery and prince george's county to go shopping. this group of friends met at tysons. some rode from prince george's county just to go to the mall. do you think this is going to bring you out to tysons corner? >> yeah. every day. i love it out here. >> we just came to visit the whole line. metro made a big improvement in the silver line. now we're waiting for the second phase to come through >> reporter: they hopped on the traoepb in rockville. destination, tyson. without the silver line they would not have come to virginia today. >> i think it's great that the silver line opened. >> i really enjoyed the trip. it was a lot of fun.

we don't usually come out, no. >> reporter: she and her son parked at white flynn and traveled to tysons. let's just say she's very excited to be riding the silver line on the first day of service. >> this is great. come on, everybody. come here. itun >> all right. this is definitely going to be a boom for tysons corner. just like that woman said, come on out. people are here on the platform. there's people walking to and from the pedestrian bridge. still a lot of activity the. many coming to the wall. many just coming out to ride the silver line. darcy spencer, news 4. and we get to repeat all of this excitement in another four years when phase 2 of the silver line opens. it will extend the subway all the way to dulles. until then, take a shuttle from the wheelie ruston station. the final 11-mile stretch will have six new stations.

this was a drill in prince george's county. a training exercise at the courthouse to see how law enforcement would react in the case of an active shooter. 150 officers and civilians took part in this event. quite a difference outside the rei today. things got loud as police broke up a protest against overseas sweat shops. this group calls themselves united students against sweat shops. police arrested 21 people charging them with disorderly conduct. the students say the north face company runs sweat shops in their stores in bangladesh. they want rei to stop doing business with north face and its parent company. for the first time, two senate hopefuls scaring off on

evacuation of u.s. employees in tripoli. operations tprb suspended and they have left for neighboring tunisia until the situation improves. it has intensified in the past few weeks. it is the worst violence there since the fall of gadhafi in 2011. coming up on nbc nightly news at 6:30. in gaza, a truce has ended after militants fired rockets during a humanitarian cease-fire. both sides agreed to hold fire for 12 hours. but when israel said it would extend the truce for another four hours, hamas rejected the extension by firing three rockets. the temporary cease-fire was meant to allow palestinians to move medical supplies into gaza and to recover the dead from the piles of rubble. since the conflict starte more than 1,000 palestinians have
