nations. official number dow down 312 points near 313. at the live desk i'm scott macfarlane. >> thanks. right now it could be slow going for drivers in silver spring. these are live pictures near new hampshire avenue. crews shut down lanes because of a serious crash that involved a tractor-trailer and two other vehicles. for much of the afternoon only a couple of lanes had been reopened. the rig jackknifed and hit the sound barrier wall. we are told three people were hurt. chopper 4 captured this video of the wreck when it happened. haz-mat crews had to be called in to assess chemicals that spilled from the truck. one witness told maryland state police the truck was weaving before it crashed. she was slowly walking across a maryland street when a but came right at her.

the woman was killed despite by standers trying to help her. tracee wilkins has the crucial evidence that could help police in this case. >> police are still investigating what happened here but here is what we know so far. an elderly woman was crossing the street when she was struck by a prince george's county bus and killed. this video tape shows at least one man running to the bus to say what happened. according to police it was too late for anything to be done. the question as to who if anyone was at fault. it was clear the woman was crossing in the cross walk. according to video tape we saw. no word on whether she was crossing against the light or not. prince george's county police are just beginning their investigation. >> county police will be investigating the incident to determine what happened. we understand there is video

from some of the area stores that shows exactly what happened. i don't think there will be much decision made about who was at fault. >> still no word on possible charges for the bus driver. coming up at 5:00 we talk with witnesses here on the scene and saw the accident as it happened. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. we want to give you an update on a stabbing on a d.c. metro train. he is accused of stabbing a teenaged transgender girl in the back. we brought you this story as breaking news yesterday. it happened during rush hour. the victim's friends say her attacker made hateful comments before the stabbing. the girl who was stabbed is expected to be survived. a deadly shooting was drug related. prince george's police provided the update in a tweet.

they found the man dead around 6:00 this morning in a home not far from the beltway. chopper 4 flew above the scene shortly after police arrived. news 4 learned the victim was a metro bus driver. his wife also worked for metro. a neighbor we talked to said the commotion woke her up. >> i'm a very light sleeper. i just heard something that sounded like a pop sound. another hour or so got up and looked out the window because i heard a lot of movement out here and saw the cars out here. very surprised. >> squads have been in and out of the house all afternoon and four cars have been towed away. a recent landslide devastated the fort washington community and now neighbors started their own fundraising campaign. they managed to raise about

$5,000. heavy rains caused the landslide in may. folks started raising money on their own because the state of maryland has not told them whether it will help pay for the repairs. new test scores show students in d.c. public schools making steady improvements in math and reading. for the first time ever more than half, 54% of students were considered proficient in math. that is 1.4% increase over last year. it may not sound like a lot but it is a big improvement compared to 2007 when only 22% of students were proficient in math. >> we have seen some outstanding growth in a number of places. i am proud of the work that our high schools were able to demonstrate and i think we will continue to see growth there. >> there were also slight

startling testimony today at the corruption trial. the prosecution's star witness detailed his relationship with the former first family. julie carey joins us live now from the courthouse in richmond with testimony today. >> reporter: only one person has been on the stand today and that is jonnie williams. his cross examination just began

as defense attorney tried to paint him as a liar and master manipulator. before that when he was being questioned their star witness delivered what they want. williams made no bones about the fact that he gave the former first couple more than $150,000 in gifts, loans and trips to get their help for his company star scientific and his new dietary supplement. on the stand williams was asked whether the mcdonnell's were his friends. said williams, the mcdawnles were not my personal friends. the prosecutor asked why were you giving them things then? williams replied i thought it would be good for my company. prosecutor asked did you think you would get that event at the mansion if you did not give them things of value and his answer was no. >> i will tell you how williams

the morning rush in new york city took a bizarre and scary turn today. a pane of broken glass fell from the 18th floor of a high-rise in manhattan. shattered pieces rained coin from the sky. >> we had workers on the 18th floor and a pane of glass some of which fell on 57th street and banged up a couple of people on the street. >> each pane of glass weighs around several hundred pounds. very scary. you are riding in a car on

the interstate and you come face-to-face with an ax. it happened to a woman on i-95. luckily the ax didn't hit her and she is okay. it stayed lodged in the dashboard and windshield of the car. it apparently came flying off of a landscaper's truck. the driver forgot he left it on the roof. when he started picking up speed it flew off. >> i found the ax is still through the windshield. the driver of the suv said he saw debris coming very, very quickly and didn't have time to avoid it. she was very shaken. i asked her if she was injured. she said she wasn't. >> just simply amazing. the truck driver has been fined about $200 for failing to secure that ax. police say it could have hurt or killed that woman especially if the car had been going any faster. >> that is scary stuff. we have had battle of summer bugs especially the blood sucking variety.

there are plenty of sprays and products that claim to repel mosquitos. what if there were an app for that? there is. >> reporter: south florida is home to billions of mosquitos. one can drive you crazy. what if there were an app for that? >> i don't know. it sounds far fetched. >> reporter: there is an app. the sonic repeller. >> you feel mosquitos? no. >> reporter: scientists say the app is based on a theory emitting a high end frequency that developers of the app claim mosquitos found distasteful. >> putting out a frequency supposed to imitate the male wing. >> reporter: he listened to the frequency and so did i. >> barely hear anything. >> unless you literally put it

weather. 7:00 most area is dry. plenty of clouds around and mainly dry. as we get into later morning hours 9:00 a.m. some showers are likely that could impact your morning commute. again, potentially rain so the morning commute could be a bit of a slow go. 10:00 a.m. tracking the potential for showers. even afternoon hours tomorrow looking mainly dry. as we get into later evening hours scattered showers are likely. only an isolated chance of thunderstorm tomorrow as far as the rain goes really just showers in the forecast. plenty of clouds around. temperature of 83. as far as clouds are concerned you would be looking up saying i think it could rain. most will be dry. there are the chance of some storms in the forecast. so a high tomorrow again of 83. it will be cooler than today.

expecting. today marks her fourth wedding anniversary. the couple's son was born in 2010. >> david cassidy's plea deal could be derailed by a tweet. he has been busted by the twitter police. cassidy was a teenage heart throb in the '70s. the new york racing association tweeted a picture of him and his friends living it up problem is cassidy was supposed to be in court to answer a drunk driving charge from last summer. prosecutors agreed to let cassidy's lawyer accept the plea deal on his behalf but when they found out he was down the road they with drew the agreement. all of the trouble that happened at the keith urban concert last saturday in boston has taken another ugly turn. an 18-year-old man was arrested

for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl on the lawn during the show. the two were drinking. the suspect called the encounter consenseual and pleaded not guilty. earlier we reported that 46 people went to hospitals during the show for alcohol-related illnesses. ohio state university fired its marching band director but now the director said he was trying to fix a vulgar culture when the school dismissed him last week. the band's alumni club is demanding he be reinstated. osu fired him last week after his investigation concluded he knew about a sexualized culture and did nothing to stop it. the investigation discovered secret rituals and students being pressured to march in their underwear. when that investigation started waters told the university he was taking steps to change the culture of hazing.

as lawmakers appeared ready to give in to grid lock and go home. >> reporter: here in the hill beginning to feel like last year's government shutdown speaker john boehner metaphorically speaking getting his brain beat in again by the tea party. it is still republicans versus democrats but also republicans versus republicans. the tea party factor and more grid lock. >> with funding for highway projects running out and the surge of children from central america unabated lawmakers were set to leave on summer break without agreeing on immigration house democrats want the senate plan to beef up the border and speed up the hearings that central american kids are entitled to. >> not to be met with the barrel of a gun and a one-way ticket back without considering whether they are justly in this country.

for the first time in its history target is bringing in an outsider. as the new ceo target is hiring

brian cornell to help revamp the company. the retail company is looking to boost the leadership team after the huge and embarrassing data breach. cornell is also the former president and ceo of sam's club and michaels. he is going to be taking on a big challenge as target just posted the first annual profit decline in five years. tonight some airlines are pushing back against the tsa's decision to hike security fees. two trade groups are suing over the increase. airlines for america say new fees violate federal law. the tsa more than doubled the fee on a domestic ticket going from $5 to $11. the airlines argue the fees will raise costs and curtail demand. a new ranking out of the best and worst banks in the country. the consumer financial protection bureau says it has

gotten tens of thousands of complaints in just the past two years. the most complained about bank, bank of america. well's fargo in second followed by jp morgan chase and capital one. the biggest reason for the complaint is mortgage and foreclosure packages. toyota is on top when it comes to car sales. the auto maker sold more than 5 million vehicles in the first half of 2015. volkswagen finished second. toyota finished at the top last year when they sold nearly 10 million vehicles. grocery stores are carving out entire aisles. a consumer reports survey found 59% of shoppers look for foods with naturallabels. >> consumer reports says it is

essentially a meaningless claim. erika gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: the term natural has been a big buzzword on processed food packaging. consumer reports shop smart says it doesn't always mean what you think. >> the food and drug administration doesn't define what natural means so a manufacturer can make the claim even when the product contains artificial ingredients. >> which planes how foods like kikkoman soy sauce can claim it is all natural. crystal light natural lemonade contains things like artificial coloring agents and bha, a synthetic preservative.

even whole foods dr. snap soda also contains artificial coloring which consumer reports tests found can contain a possible carcinogen. watch out for words like made with natural ingredients, naturally flavored and naturally brewed. all are meaningless terms that can make foods sound wholesome even if it is not. >> don't take libls at face value. if it contains a bunch of things yo acan't pronounce you probably want to do more homework. >> reporter: good advice to help you shop smarter. >> what do you do? consumer reports says look for the word organic instead. at least that word is well regulated. we reached out to all companies mentioned in the story. kraft food says using the word

there. >> apparently. looks like the heat might be on its way back because we have enjoyed this week so far. >> this week was beautiful. the humidity was low. the temperatures were comfortable. the heat was back today. and then it is going to be out of here by tomorrow. our high temperature today was 87 degrees. doug will have the official report coming up. it was warmer today. the humidity wasn't too bad. as we look to tomorrow, saturday and sunday so basically your weekend forecast there will be some showers and some storms but at times. we are really not looking at a washout right now. this is the forecast we are going to keep a close eye on. what we are looking at especially tomorrow plenty of cloud cover. we could be dealing with overcast skies almost the entire day tomorrow. it is not too hot. highs in the low 80s but the humidity will be there and feeling muggy especially sunday. temperatures in the 80s everywhere.

82 in martinsburg. 87 in washington. partly to mostly sunny skies across the area. if you are going to the nationals game tonight as they take on the phillies first pitch just after 7:00 looking like nice baseball weather. temperatures in the low 80s to start the game. by the seventh inning stretch upper 70s. last out upper 70s. it will be comfortable. here on storm team 4 radar tracking light rain mainly to the north of winchester but not looking at showers in the d.c. metro area this evening. frederick county and loudoun county might be dealing with a quick moving shower. no thunderstorms in the forecast. tomorrow during the morning hours there will be showers around that could slow the morning commute otherwise cloudy skies, low 70s at 7:00 a.m. as we get into the mid day hours it should be mainly dry but cloudy. upper 70s at that point. a chance of a shower tomorrow
