shut down because of a huge water main break. we've watched this issue develop live since yesterday afternoon. and now news 4's megan mcgrath is there to show us the work happening to clean up the mess. >> reporter: yeah, we're getting an update here from wssc. and unfortunately, the news is not good. i'm joined by lynn rig beggins. >> definitely progress. there was a lot of water to come out of this hole. we lost about 6 million gallons. so we now have about a 20 by 30 inch hole in the ground over here and about 18 feet of pipe is out. literally blew off of each end of the pipe that runs under rhode island avenue. and we're still digging to see if the pipe that is still in the ground is in good condition or more needs to be cut out and replaced.

so this is definitely a long running repair here. >> so it may go into the evening rush hour or longer? >> at this point it's tough to say, but maybe make alternate plans for the evening rush hour. we worked all night and we'll work all day to get the road open, but i'd make other plans. >> the courthouse down the street is without water? >> correct. about 16 customers don't have worry and the district court building is one of them. we can make the repairs and get the water on and then we'll still have to take care of the road after that, but hopefully we can get the water on as soon as possible. but it's an old pipe, a lot of damage. >> thanks for the update here this morning. so the bottom line, rhode island avenue in hyattsville, only one lane in the southbound direction getting by. all the other lanes are closed and that will be the case a good

it broke out just before midnight on burnside drive. of firefighters had to evacuate the entire building. two adults were taken to the burn center, two others treated for minor injuries. several families have to find someplace else to stay. a trial begins today in a controversial sexting case. trey simms will face child pornography charges for sexting his 15-year-old girlfriend. prosecutors will not use explicit photos of simms taken during a search warrant. the key witness in the corruption trial of former virginia governor bob mcdonnell will be back on the stand today. jonnie williams said he gave bob and maureen mcdonnell more than $150,000 in gifts and loans because he thought it would gb for his company. bob mcdonnell reacted before he even entered the courthouse. >> this is a marathon, it won't be decided in a day.

longer. you can get an idea of the size of the hole. they have been here all might long working. they started to dig up the pipes. and take a closer look at what they have here. just what they will need to do to fix everything. unfortunately, it's a bigger job than they were expecting. they have a section of pipe that blew out basically on both ends. it's 73 years old. they remove the pipe, but they also now need to look at other sections of pipe because they have more problems. so a lot more digging to do. they will be here for a good hunk of the day. they're not even at the point where they're repairing the pipe itself. so this will be a long job. and the district courthouse here in hyattsville, they are without water. nothing official from the court as to what they plan to do, but without water, it's unclear

a big traffic alert to let you know about in d.c. this weekend. starting sunday, the following streets will be shut down. f street between 14th and 15th street northwest, 29th street between k and m northwest, the southbound curb lane on 23rd from e street to constitution avenue northwest. and the reason is that african leaders summit will begin here in d.c. this coming week. a new challenge online starting to make the rounds. it has already sent several kids to the hospital. it's called the burn or fire challenge. it involves pouring alcohol or anotherab another flammable liquid on yourself and lighting yourself on fire while someone else films the entire thing. one boy in florida nearly died. his other says she doesn't understand why these kids are doing this. >> i didn't think my child would do this. never crossed my mind. >> derrick robinson suffered
