welcome to "news4 this week." hi, everyone. i'm veronica johnson. we are going to show you some of the more interesting local stories making news this week. among them on the short list, we now know what sites will be hosting a huge government agency and all the jobs that goes with it. plus, stakeout goes green. the big change d.c. restaurants will have to make in hopes of getting litter out of area rivers. farming inheurb a new trend has a neighborhood walking out their front door for fresh produce. we begin with a story of courage. you saw it first here on news4. a d.c. fire fighter with only a few months experience on the job savean4-arldom's life. the rookie raced through a

burning house and carried the woman to safety. news4's mark seagraves spoke to the hero and the family impacted business his lifesaving effort. >> millie jones lived in the house for more than 38 years. she has helped raise three generations of children here. it was her 8-year-old great grandson who ran through the house the morning of the blaze, trying to warn people to get out. he is the one that told firefighters where to find his great grandmother. >> it was the grandson standing with the door open. my grandmom, go get her. >> amir johnson is 19 years old. he just graduated from the fire academy in december and he's only been on the streets a few months. >> probably my second big fire. i never had to drag someone out of a fire. i was kind of out. >> he says when he got inside the fire, it was so hot and the smoke so thick that he could hardly see.

>> searched the first bedroom. came out of the bedroom. searched the next bedroom. came out of that bedroom. i found the grandmother in the last bedroom on the right. >> with the help of other firefighters johnson got the 84-year-old great grandmother to safety. today llie jones' son went to truck 17 to thank the man would risked his life in carried his mother to safety. >> thank you very much. thank you very much. >> thank you. >> you saved my mom. i appreciate that a lot. >> my mom is confined to the bed. she needs assistance to get out of the bed. it is very important that somebody got to her. >> johnson and jones both grew newspaper this northeast neighborhood. while johnson is getting spotlight today he says there is no way he could have saved mrs. jones' life without his fellow firefighters.

>> reporter: the landover mall is in the running. owned by lerner enterprises the company lost its bid for prince george's medical center and is now hoping the fbi will use the site. greenbelt metro is also in the running. near the beltway and just steps from the metro. it has been the favorite of county officials throughout the process. today the county executive said there are no longer any favorites in this competitive race. >> we are going to doverything at the county and state level. we have a commitment from the governor to make these sites as competitive as possible. >> reporter: in virginia fairfax county, spring peeled warehouse, that's the third and final site for consideration. virginia u.s. senator mark warner says he peels confident about their chances of winning. >> let's make this decision based on the business merits and what's good for the tax scare what's good for the fbi employees and how we make sure the mission of the fbi is advanced. >> tracee wilkins, news4.

so long to takeout containers as you know them. mayor vincent gray sign ad bill -- sign ad bill banning d.c. restaurants from using styrofoam packaging. it is part of an environmental cleanup approved by the d.c. council. that means restauran ad trucks will have to use compostable or recyclable containers only. the fishermen we spoke to said they hope lit keep litter out of the water. the ban goes into effect in 2016. the grocery storehaevyo wants in their neighborhood. more locations are coming to our area. when we come back, find out if wegmans is coming to your town. what a better way to celebrate. we are going to show you the special way this woman decided to mark a milestone birthday. that's all next on "news4 this week."

the grocery store is branching out in virginia and maryland. wegmans is building a new store in alexandria section of fairfax county. it opens next year at the hilltop village center near telegraph road. a new maryland location will be opening in owings mills. no date when that store will open. wegmans was rated the best supermarket in the country. have you ever been in one? it is pretty cool. new kind of neighborhood gaining popularity across the country. it is called an agra-hood up. one of the first is in loudoun county p northern virginia bureau chief julie carey visited the community to see what draws residents to the idea. >> fill up that whole crate. >> reporter: it doesn't take long to see what folks find appealing about living in an agra-hood. it is if food grown just down the street from your house. this is willowsburg. the first residents arrived tree yea

-- three years ago. >> healthier. i think we started eating more vegetable and fruits. and eating local. >> reporter: it consists of 4,000 acres. 2,000 of that set aside in conservancy. in the middle of that a 300-acre farm. >> we have herbs and plowers and vij tabls and fruits. >> reporter: mike snow is the farm manager. this is the peak of growing season. several days a week residents who pay a fee stop in to the farm stand to get their share of fruits and vegetables. there are also chickens for eggs, milk is produced here. another benefit, residents who enjoy it can volunteer to work on the farm. >> more than just coming to the farm stand and buying food but also picking their own stuff if they want, bringing their kids down to the neighborhood, down to the garden. >> reporter: now these are not your usual farmhouses. this is an upscale development.

willowsburg takes the farm-to-table movement to heart. this demonstration kitchen in the community center opens this week. today they are making fresh soup. >> i'm exploring cooking fm the very business i can kid level all the way up through pop-up dinners which we are going to have here shortly. >> reporter: right now 250 families called the agra-hood home that eventually some 2 how thousand families are expected to settle here. in loudoun county, julie carey, news4. >> what a great idea to get everybody eating better no matter what age. from the very young to the older. the sacred grounds of arlington national cemetery are getting loving care from hundreds of volunteers. lawn care and landscaping professionals donated their services this week. the national landscape industry group organizes the effort to tree, install lighting and protection, place mulch and plant new flowers. volunteers from across the

country are -- and right here at home say they are proud to get those grounds in their best shape possible. >> we find it important to come here and support the cause that has given everything to us to come here and respect them and take care of their final home. >> volunteers work at merely 200 acres or about two-thirds of arlington's entire grounds. a montgomery county woman found a unique way on celebrate her 100th birthday this week by becoming a u.s. citizen. she was born in nicaragua in 1914. the seamstress spent most of her life in el salvador before coming here to the u.s. with her daughter in 1987. she helped with the grandchildren and made clothes for the whole family. in 1987 naturalization wasn't an option for munoz because he did not speak english and that's a requirement that drops at the age of 80. why now? she would like to vote.

>> july 2012, parker went to ocean city with his mother and little brother. he had been playing in the water for about an hour when he dove over a wave headfirst. >> it was shallower than i thought it was. i hit a sandbar right away on my head. in the blink of an eye i could not move or feel. >> reporter: parker was under wqater and fully conscious being tossed around. he couldn't even feel being rescued. >> when the lifeguards lifted may left arm and lifted it in front of me and i see my arm but my arm feels like it is over here because everything feels nul numb. that was the first shocking thing. >> reporter: parker smashed two vertebrae near the top of his spine. after his first surgery, doctors gave him a 4% chance of ever having movement below his shoulders again. >> the first week i asked my mom, when are they going to get me walking again? are we going to go home soon? i'm tired of laying in bed. >> reporter: parker's injury not so unique. there were 226 major injuries at

ocean city beach it is year parker was hurt. 360 the year before and 140 the year after. most of them in those carefree days of summer. >> dive sing okay if you are doing it pete first. >> if you don't know it is ten feet of water don't go in the water. >> reporter: parker's parents want to warn people how fun can turn to tragedy. >> park her to relearn how to write, eat, how to dress himself. he has made huge strides. >> reporter: parker spent power months at a spinal injury hospital in atlanta. the second-degree blackbelt fought tooth and nails. this helped train his legs to move again. here we are a year and a half after leaving the hospital and parker ble my mind when he got out of his wheelchair and climbed the steps. >> now i can go upstairs. we don't have to sit down here

when we are having dinner, everybody sits on the couch. >> reporter: imagine being a 15-year-old boy finally exploring independence. suddenly screws and plates in your mecke and just standing is a battle. >> being able to stand up straight and look someone eye to eye, it feels good. >> reporter: motivation in physical therapy were the basic goal is to do better the day before. he wants to be able to drive and go off to cole on his own. parker graduates from high school next year. >> he's walking across that stage. i hope that he is using his crutches or he's using that cane or nothing at all. >> reporter: aaron gilchrist, news4. >> parker's medical bills are in the neighborhood after half million dollars now. his friends and family set up a fund to help with that. if you could like go to nbcwashington.com along with more of aaron's interview with parker. we wish him all the best best. he is one of the most recognizable redskins players

it seems like it took forever to get here but now it is time to play some football or at least start playing the game. redskins fans say they want to see the team take the field for training cam. there seems to be a favorite along the ladies. ryan kerrigan. the 25-year-old strapped on a go-pro camera to give us an idea of what it is like to be him. take a look. >> he is adorable and funny. he has a sense of humor. >> should be screaming. you see how he looks? he looks fantastic. >> i have three that do it. my wife and my two daughters. that's about enough for me. women are a wonderful creature
