>> i'm jim handly. new today, details of the deaths of a young family in virginia. a couple and their three young daughters were found shot and killed inside their house. the sheriff is calling it a murder-suicide today. david culver has been in culpeper all day talking to investigators and family members of the victims. he joins us now live outside the family home with new information. david? >> reporter: jim, tonight this home behind me, now a crime scene. a simple home along a two-lane highway here in culpeper, virginia. in talking with family and friends and neighbors, it's clear this a devastating and tragic loss. relatives tell me the family of five liver lived in the home. the children raged in age from to 13 years old. saturday evening was the last contact anyone had with the family. on sunday morning they didn't show up for asght shauna's moth

grandmother of the three kids, along with a family friend decided to check on the family. around 10:00 they showed up at the house. doors were bolted locked. she went in there a window, found all five family members shot to death. the gun used also found inside the house, according to the sheriff. >> there's been a domestic situation between the husband and wife. our investigation up to this point would lead us to believe that the crime was committed by one of the adults. right now that focuses mainly on mr. washington himself. >> such a violent end to those young lives. it's leaving family members with a lot of questions tonight. the biggest, just why did this happen? we are just beginning our coverage in culpeper tonight. we're piecing together the timeline for you. how things added up to where we are now. we'll introduce you to a family member who is extremely close to

the situation. she will explain some of the stresses she thinks might have contributed to what folks here are calling a tragic situation. we'll bring you updates throughout the next three hours of news. for now, live in culpeper, david culver, new 4. shauna washington was described as a loving and involved mother. chris gordon will have a more detailed look at shauna washington and her daughters at 5:00 tonight. breaking news at 4:00, one of the nation's biggest gun control advocates has died. >> former reagan press secretary, james brady, passed away this morning at the age of 73. brady was one of four people shot during an assassination attempt on president reagan in 1981 here in d.c.he was shot in spent most of the rest of his life confined to a wheelchair, he suffered partial paralysis

and slurred speech. the experience spurred brady to become a gun control advocate. in '93, president clinton signed the brady handgun violence prevention act requiring a five-day wait and a background check before someone could purchase a gun. the brady campaign to prevent gun violence is also named after him. as press secretary, brady was known for his whit and in 2000 the press briefing room was named in his honor brady's family said he died this morning at a nursing home in alexandria where he had been living with his wife. coming up at 5:00, tom sherwood will have more on brady's life and legacy. there was no romance between the prosecution's star witness and the former first lady of virginia. that's the testimony of johnny williams in the corruption trial of former governor bob mcdonnell and his wife, mauer remember. prosecutors say williams dave mcdonnell more than $150,000 in

gifts and loans in exchange for promoting his company. in court today the defense tried to poke holes in williams' testimony. julie carrie was in the courtroom to hear it all. >> reporter: a long time on the stand, johnny williams spent two full days and part of two others testifying. his job as the star witness for prosecution to tell the story of the $165,000 in gifts, trips and loans that he gave to the former first couple. johnny williams made no comment when he left the courthouse about 1:00 this afternoon. but on the stand he gave clear answers about a key question in the case, about whether or not he had a romantic relationship with former first lady, maureen mcdonnell. asked the prosecutor, did you ever have a physical or intimate relationship with ms. mcdonnell? he said i didn't know ms.

mcdonnell had any interest in me until this week. no, i never had any physical contact with maureen mcdonnell, period. williams' testimony goes against what the defense has been saying, that maureen mcdonnell had a crush on johnny williams. the williams testimony today seems to undercut a cornerstone of the defense. >> williams says, "a," there was nothing there, "b," he goes further and says there was no indication, there was no physical relationship, there was no intimate relationship, beyond that that mrs. mcdonnell never expressed to him her interest in moving beyond this relationship. >> now, coming up on news 4 at 5:00, the defense did score points today. in particular when asking some questions about that rolex watch given to the governor. more on that coming up.

a verdict could come down at any moment now in the trial of a montgomery county man charged in a violent road rage incident. a man and woman were stabbed outside the westfield montgomery mall last november. prosecutors say david goldberg attacked the couple after they argued about who had the right of way at a stop sign. goldberg lives in potomac and is charged with two downs of attempted murder. 14 people are recovering this afternoon from an early morning apartment fire here in frederick. four of them were taken to burn centers for treatment. three of them, a mother and her two children are in critical condition. six apartments here in the hickory hill complex along key park way are destroyed. the red cross is helping the 24 people who lost their homes. the cause of the blaze is under investigation. two people are dead after apparently overdosing on drugs during that music festival in maryland. 20-year-old taylor fox viscardi of raleigh, north carolina died

on friday. a 17-year-old from woodbridge, virginia also died over the weekend. as many as 20 other concert-goers were taken to the hospital. police tell us they were all at the mad decent block party and that the drug ecstasy may have been involved. this is the first day of training for operators of the new streetcars along the h street corridor in northeast washington. 28 drivers are learning the ropes, so to speak. then they have to be certified to carry passengers. the d.c. department of transition says in the meantime everyone should be careful. pedestrians should never step in front of a moving streetcar and if you park in the streetcar's path, you will get a $100 ticket. the streetcar service will start later this year. water worries in ohio. 500,000 residents have been g n given the all clear to drink up. why some are not ready to turn

an end to a cease-fire that lac for much of the day in the conflict between israel and palestine. the israeli army declared the cease-fire to allow humanitarian supplies to get into gaza. this came as israeli ground troops began withdrawing from

the gaza strip but the violence resumed after accusations of strikes by both sides. israeli officials say an attack on a bus in jerusalem left one dead. palestinian officials say an israeli strike killed an 8-year-old girl and wounded almost 30 others. also today, iran said it gave hamas the weapons technology that allows it to fire missiles into israel. it will shape our culture for generations to come. though it's now been 100 years since world war i began. the duke and duchess stood in honor of those who died. it was in 1914 that germany invaded belgium. britain declared war against germany later that day. 10 million people were left dead because of the conflict, more than 20 million were hurt on the battlefields. london is marking the anniversary in an artistic way. you're looking at 888,000

marion barry is back at work today after a weekend traffic accident. he says he had a diabetic attack and drove the wrong way on pennsylvania avenue southeast and caused a minor crash. >> my levels went low. when it does that, you become disoriented. in fact, you could die, really, if it got so low. god was good to me. i got disoriented, went wrong side of the street. >> sources tell news 4 police cited the 78-year-old former mayor for driving on the wrong side and having expired plates. it's okay to use the water

again. the water ban that affected thousands in ohio and michigan over the weekend was lifted today. the problem with the water, too much algae. while the emergency may be over, some residents say they're not yet ready to take a sip. >> i'm pretty thirsty right now. >> that's right. >> reporter: toledo, ohio mayor michael collins taking a big swig of the city's drinking water, showing his confidence it's safe to drink. >> all six test results came back with no problem whatsoever. >> reporter: the all-clear follows two days in which aboabou about 400,000 residents were told not to drink, bathe in or brush their teeth with what was coming out of their faucets. all because of this, blooms of algae. over the weekend the amount of algae in toledo water reached toxic levels and could have brought vomiting, rashes and

liver damage. boiling just made the toxin worse. . the algae blooms are caused by fertilizer runoff from farms and sewage treatment sludge. for years federal, state and local leaders have been trying to figure out how to prevent the algae blooms from happening. >> the issue is a chronic issue. we'll have this until we address the situation. that's what we have to do. we have to get the funds and resources in here to look at how do we stop this? i have complete confidence in the water supply. >> during the water ban, truckloads of water poured in from across the state. the national guard used purification systems, with the ban lifted people who live here hope to resume life as normal but are wary the danger is not over yet. this past spring lawmakers in ohio passed a law saying farmers who use commercial fertilizers must be trained. environmental groups say it's a good start but more needs to be done to stop this algae from blooming.

no big birthday parties today, president obama is keeping a low profile as he marks his 53rd birthday. over the weekend he played a little golf and spent some time at camp david, today, no public events scheduled, just a couple of meetings with aides at the white house. the fans were out in full force in richmond today.

it wasn't just burgundy and gold in the crowd. the redskins held a joint practice with the new england patriots. it looks like there were a lot of tom brady supporters out there as well today. >> yeah, just a couple. there were a lot. everyone is here to see everybody, but thousands more turned up to see patriots quarterback tom brady. he and the patriots are here in richmond to practice with the redskins for the next three days. that is tom brady meeting up with joe theismann, a pair of quarterbacks with some super bowl rings. tom has three, joe has one. the patriots and redskins practice today on this same field. we're talking over 100 football players out here sharing the space. the reason they're doing this is to break up the same old same old practices during training camp.

we're learning more now about an apparent murder-suicide that claimed the lives of a family of five. family members found the couple and their three young daughters dead from gunshot wounds inside their home. they didn't show up for church. investigators did find a gun inside the home. they believe at this point the father pulled the trigger. we'll have much more at the top of the hour. we're hearing a report of a possible ebola case in new york. mt. sinai hospital in new york city says they are treating a man with possible ebola symptoms. the patient arrived at the hospital early this morning with a high fever and

gastrointestinal issues. he said he recently traveled to a west african country dealing with the ebola outbreak. mt. sinai says the man is in strict isolation and the hospital is returning tests to determine if he is infected with the ebola virus. we'll follow the developments out of new york and bring you updates as they become available. at the live desk, i'm erika gonzalez. an american woman suffering from ebola is scheduled to arrive back in the u.s. tomorrow morning. >> american doctors already here in georgia being treated at emory university hospital. the ebola outbreak is the largest in history and concern is growing. nbc's jay gray is in atlanta with more. >> reporter: we are now learning just how incredible it was that ebola patient dr. kent brantly walked into emory hospital when he arrived saturday. >> we're hoping to do our best so that dr. brantly not only walks in the hospital but walks

out of the hospital i the condition that he should be in. >> reporter: nbc news learned that just two days before he was evacuated, brantly's condition took a rapid turn for the worst and was near death when he was given an eerenl mpm. >> it's cocktail of antibiotics that the body makes to block the virus. >> reporter: doctors in africa says brantly's health improved quickly and dramatically after taking the medicine calling the results "all miraculous." sources confirm he received a second dose of the serum yesterday and that his fever has decreased and there's been improvement in his symptoms. his colleague, nancy writebol, initially thought to be in worse condition, received two doses of the drug. this specialized private plane, the same one that transported brantly to atlanta is back in liberia now and will evacuate writebol overnight. she is expected to land sometime late tuesday morning and will

for drivers in montgomery county. cedar lane in bethesda is reopen again. the road had been closed for two months because of construction. two in lanes were added. it's part of a $13 million road improvement project to help traffic flow into walter reed military medical center and the national institutes of health. his death shocked a prince george's county community. markel ross was shot walking to high school back in september of 2012. prosecutors say trayvon bennett was the man who shot him. today bennett went on trial. police solved the case by connecting a gun used in a robbery to the one used in ross's murder the trial of the ashburn, virginia man accusedf killing i had wife has been delayed until next summer. police say castillo murdered his estranged wife michelle in march and tried to make it look like a

suicide. castillo denies the charge. his trial is set for 13 days next july. he's out of jail on bail despite the objections of prosecutors. according to leesburg today, s castillo has to wear a gps monitoring system. the obama administration secretly employed young latinos in cuba to try to provoke political change there. that's according to an investigation by the associated press. this started in 2009 and operated through the u.s. agency for international development. the young people worked undercover for the u.s. government and posed as tourists. the a.p. investigation found that operation was full of incompetence and risk. u. u.s. aid denied anything to do with this. some stylists are turning to candles to cut hair.

in the mid 80s on thursday and friday. weekend right now, 88, 87. right now the weekend looking dry. again, we do not have any extreme heat to show you here in our seven-day forecast or for the next 14. we have breaking news now. we just learned about an assault on a popular trail in loudoun county. erika gonzalez has more at the live desk. >> that attack happened early this morning on the trail in sterling, just off oak grove road. that's not far from the dulles international airport. sheriffs deputies say a woman was jogging on the trail around 7:00 this morning when she was knocked to the ground and assaulted. she says the man wound up running off the trail, just a few moments later. authorities are working to get a better description of exactly who this attacker is. if you have any information on this attack, you are asked to call the loudoun county sheriff's office.

a possible break in the case of an oregon woman who has been missing for 11 days. police have what may be a solid lead. her husband is not convinced. >> reporter: it's the most credible clue yet in the disappearance of missing wife and mother jennifer houston. a possible sighting on board a ferry headed to the san juan islands off the coast of washington, a place the family has vacationed before. a couple reports seeing what looked like jennifer's green suv with a cracked windshield and nearby a blond woman matching her description. >> at first you can't help but get excited. you know, there's been so many leads that were -- that turned out to be false. >> reporter: on july 24th, the

day she vanished, surveillance pictures showed jennifer at a gas station and rite-aid near her home. she told her family she needed to runner rands. records show she with dru a small amount of cash at an atm, bought sleeping pills a packet of trail mix and gatorade, then not a trace. this is completely out of character for her. she would never do this. she loves me and the boys. >> reporter: those who know the houstons are also shocked. many dropping everything to help in an exhaustive police search. >> these are people i don't even know. if they can do that for me, i can be strong. >> reporter: despite the fact that jennifer's phone is off, he still calls his wife every day clinging to hope she will finally come home. >> the boys need you. i need you. if you can't -- if you can't get away, we'll continue to keep looking for you. we'll never stop.
