afghanistan. >> 26 hours and no verdict. we'll tell you what the long deliberation means for a man accused of attempted murder outside a popular mall. >> and the redskins owner is addressing the team name controversy for the first time in almost a year. >> america has lost a true hero. those words from the family of major general harold green. >> green was a 34-year army veteran ambushed by a gunman dressed as an afghan soldier in afghanistan. he lived in falls church, virginia. he was promoted two years ago at fort myer in arlington. u.s. oh fishes do not believe he was targeted. 15 other allied troops were shot and survived including generals from germany and afghanistan. >> we have team coverage tonight

beginning with shomari stone. >> reporter: he was widely respected here and in his falls church neighborhood. two-star u.s. major general harold green is the highest ranking u.s. military member killed since the afghanistan war began. >> any time we lose one of our own it's a tragedy. it's difficult. >> juanita chaeng speaks for th family. >> the family wants america, the army and afghanistan to know they have lost a hero today. >> reporter: major general was green was in charge of training the afghan army training while helping the men he helped train in kabul. a lone gunman opened fire at a gathering of u.s. and afghan soldiers. green died. a german general and more than a dozen u.s. and coalition troops were wounded.

the gunman was killed. >> this shooting is a painful reminder of the service and sacrifice our people in uniform make every day. >> his wife was an army colonel, his son a soldier. >> he was proud of the mission he was working on and the family is proud of what he was doing as well. >> major general green is the highest ranking military officer to die in combat since vietnam. i'm shomari stone, news 4. >> today's insider attack, jim handily joins us with the impact this could have on relations between the two countries. >> when the attack reignited concern about handing over complete control to afghan security officials. it won't change the u.s. military plan to withdraw most forces from afghanistan by the end of the year. they are trying to figure out

what triggered the attack. preliminary reports suggest it wasn't the result of a taliban plan or an attempt to target the general. more than 10 oh 0 american troops have been killed in the insider attacks. the number of incidents have significantly dropped in the last two years. 53 americans were killed in these attacks. this year, three including yesterday's attack. experts say the overall threat will never be eliminated. >> the taliban will never stop trying to recruit afghans to conduct these kind of attacks on americans and afghan soldiers. that will continue forever. >> along with major green's death, 15 people were also wounded. eight of them are americans. army chief of staff ray odierno sent out a statement this evening saying these soldiers were professionals, committed to the mission. it is their service and sacrifice that define us as an

georges county. we are told a man was hit by a car and killed on pennsylvania avenue. it happened near the intersection with water street. pennsylvania avenue in the area is closed while the police investigate this. we learned the driver involved stayed on the scene. you can expect more updates tomorrow morning on news 4 today. >> right now in virginia an amber alert is in effect for a three-year old boy who might be in danger. tommy ingall was last seen at his home in southwest virginia last night. investigators say the child is with his father who has made suicidal and homicidal threats toward the police. he may also be armed with an ak-47 and bullpen vest. the father and son are believed to be in a 2001 four-door, navy blue dodge neon with virginia tags wnz-9169. if you see them or the car call

911. >> there is still no verdict in the attempted murder trial of david goldberg. he's accused of stabbing a man and a woman outside montgomery mall last year after a road rage incident in the parking lot there. jackie benson has more. we are told people left the courtroom surprised today. jurors deliberated 14 hours today. that's a long time. 12 hours yesterday. given the evidence in the case which includes eyewitness testimony, many people expected to have a verdict sooner. montgomery county states attorney john mccarthy stepped out around 9:00 p.m. >> there is a pending question that the lawyers and judge will talk about. deliberations will continue tomorrow. >> 25-year-old david goldberg on trial after an incident at montgomery mall in bethesda. his car almost struck another vehicle in the parking lot. prosecutors say he attempted to

run over and stabbed two people in the other car with a five-inch folding knife. the defense attorney argued his client who had his young daughter in the car acted in self-defense as he claimed in this 911 call. >> yes, my car was assaulted with my daughter in it. i trd to defend myself. my car is highly damaged. >> there are a lot of counts in this case. a lotd of legal principles to apply. i think they are going through it in a methodical and organized way. >> jurors are expected to resume tomorrow morning. >> investigators found a man was beaten to death in his home. police were called around noon after neighbors heard a disturbance. 73-year-old cecil brown died from blunt force trauma to his body. no suspects are in custody.

>> after the serious work of the u.s. africa summit today, president obama and mrs. obama hosted a formal dinner for the heads of state of nearly 50 african nations. each leader entered saluted by an honor guard. a four-course dinner is being served in a huge tent on the south lawn. this is a 400-person guest list, the largest dinner the obamas have held at the white house. lionel richie performed for guests after dinner. those leaders are back to work tomorrow. we have new street closures in downtown d.c. streets around the state department will be closed from midnight tonight until about 6:30 wednesday evening. we'll have the latest on traffic tomorrow morning at news 4 today at 4:26 in the morning. >> tomorrow could mark a huge milestone in the effort to legalize marijuana in the district. d.c.'s board of elections is

expected to the approve a ballot initiative to allow residents to decide to legalize pot in november. in july supporters got signatures to get the measure on the pal lot. if aboved d.c. residents over 21 could possess up to oh two ounces of marijuana. they can grow up to six plants in their home. >> this was a night to get to know your neighbors. police hosted the 31st annual national night out. it was started by neighborhood watch groups in an effort to deter crime. now it's become a way to show unity in neighborhoods and to allow police to connect with residents. news 4 helped to host tonight's event that was held in maryland. >> for the first time since writing a letter to fans last

ten months after a shooting rampage at the washington navy yard the chairman of a police union on that base say it is the local navy police force is

understaffed. in fact, he says, just one officer at a time is patrolling the navy yard. he also says there are 40 fewer officers than there should be at d.c. naval facilities. and he told scott mac far land that a similar shortage slowed the response to the shooting last september. >> the washington navy yard as vulnerable as it was september 16. >> yes, sir. we haven't really made any corrections. what's sad is -- >> they are trying to recruit and hire more officers. they would not specify how many are on staff or how many patrol the base. they say they won't do it for security reasons. they say they are meeting all security requirements. >> developing tonight, new precautions being taken against the ebola virus as a second

american patient returns home from west africa for treatment. nancy whitebol arrived at emory university hospital in atlanta this afternoon. she was on a stretcher covered from head to toe in a protective suit. her was who is still in liberia where he was caring for his wife issued this statement through a spokesman. >> a week ago he said we were thinking of a possible funeral arrangeme arrangements. yet we kept our faith. now we have a real reason to be hopeful. >> airports across the country are on alert for people who may have symptoms of the ebola virus. british airways temporarily suspended flights to west africa. >> feels like summer time out there. going to get wet? >> these are exactly summer time storms coming through now. summer time downpours. nothing to worry about. not much in the way of

lightning, thunder or wind. tomorrow a better chance of that occurring. nothing around the city currently. we have seen a light shower move through the downtown area just a little bit earlier. there are heavier showers making it through now. storm team 4 radar shows them up there toward carol county. out to the howard county area. moving in toward prince georges, fairfax county through virginia. they are moving south and east. next half hour to an hour or so. let's zoom in right here if we can down toward gathersburg through rockville. these will come along 270 here. you will see this shower come through in the next 15, 20 minutes. it will only last five or ten minutes. same thing in rockville. continuing to move to the south and east at 15 to 25 miles per hour. not a lot to worry about. lightning is turned on. not much out of the storms at all. don't be surprised to hear a

rumble of thunder or two. winds from the south at 5 miles per hour. a little bit more humid than this afternoon after a high of 92. rain cooled there. 73 in fredricksburg. a nice night for the most part. you can see the line in the atmosphere making it through the region. that's one trough and back to the west we have a cold front sweeping through tomorrow for a better chance of storms. here it is right here. continuing to move out. we have big time problems toward the beaches. also some problems up there as well. heads up for rip current threats. this is future weather tomorrow morning. maybe a few light areas of clouds and a nice warm start. watch tomorrow afternoon around 4:00 we see storms developingment not everybody will see them.

they are not going to be that strong. it will be a good idea to have the umbrella handy by thursday talking about nothing but sunshine. thursday looks beautiful. severe storm potential tomorrow on the low side. high winds, the biggest factor. maybe brief heavy rain. we are not experiencing problems. sunny, hot and humid with storms. 87 to 92 with winds on the light side. not a bad time at all. take a look. the next couple of days get better. low to moderate impact with the hot wet wither. that's going to be about it. 8 # on thursday for the redskins game. we are talking about the game on nbc 4 looking like a good game or good weather for that. 87 friday. thursday and friday, spectacular. can't rule out a few showers but i think that's all it will be. showers on saturday. possibly on sunday. do not think we are going to see much rain this weekend. we will not, 85 on saturday.
