do something about it, we will take action. >> the president was clear to say this attack will not involve u.s. ground troops and will not lead to another war in iraq. in just the last half hour, speaker of the house john boehner responded to the strikes. he supported the president's decision, but said, quote, the president needs a long-term strategy, one that defines success as completing our mission. and then if the president is willing to put forward such a strategy, i am ready to listen and work with him. we are staying up to the minute and on every angle of this developing story. in just a few minutes we'll talk about nbc's senior political editor mark murray about the pressure that was on the president to order this strike. and right now tropical storm iselle is hitting hawaii. a hurricane warning is in effect for the big island and the waters surrounding it. people are being told to stay out of the water, a warning a surfer did not listen. to the big island could get 18 inches of rain today alone.

farther out to sea. by 2:00 a.m. saturday it will be just 35-mile-an-hour winds. 2:00 sunday it will be 25-mile-an-hour winds so it's weakening quite a bit. julio has winds of 105 but it is weakening now. it was a category 3 hurricane earlier and is now down to a 2. looks like it will be a category 1 hurricane passing to the north of the hawaiian islands during the weekend, but close enough to give them some heavy surf. right now we've got temperatures that are in the 70s. a beautiful day. 79 at reagan national. a look at our weekend and rain chances and a look into changes coming next week in a few minutes, barbara. >> thank you, tom. we're going back to richard jordan at the live desk who has some breaking traffic news for us. >> barbara, a very bad accident out in laurel. anne arundel police are investigating this. it was a two-car crash on brock ridge road near dorsey run road. crews had to shut down a stretch of that street as theyonducted their investigation. two cars involved in that crash.

we're told it's early in the investigation but we're told speed was a factor here. one person had to be sent to the hospital with serious injuries. there is a creek nearby and in that creek a third vehicle was found. not clear at this pointing if that vehicle in the creek was involved in that crash or perhaps it was there from earlier on. we're still waiting to get more on that but the investigation continues for now. that's the latest from the live desk, barbara, back over to you. right now extra police are patrolling the beltway this weekend waiting and watching for you to break the rules. news4's megan mcgrath is near the beltway and route 50 to explain this new crackdown that's under way. >> reporter: barbara, if you're out driving on the capital beltway in either maryland or virginia this weekend, make sure that you drive responsibly straight troopers from both of those jurisdictions are teaming up for a special enforcement effort that's going to be happening later on today. now take a look at the video we shot a little while ago. we caught up with a trooper who was on the beltway near route 50

there are weeks more to go in the corruption trial of former virginia governor bob mcdonnell. since the trial started this morning, northern virginia bureau chief julie carey tweeted maureen mcdonnell is under fire for potentially hoarding gifts. the mcdonnells are accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars in gifts in exchange for political influence. as he entered court this morning, bob mcdonnell said he's been under attack before. >> i've been through a lot of battles in the army and in my life but with the grace of god i'll get through it. >> he also said he's ready for the weekend. julie is tweeting the latest from the trial and we can expect more from her today. to stay up to date by the minute

11:17 am
known as very fierce fighters, so it set off alarm bells at the pentagon when isis was able to overtake some of the kurdic military positions. >> and the president warned yesterday. why now? >> well, what happened was over the weekend and the last couple of days the isis forces, which washington thought that these kurdish forces would be able to hold back those attacks, that proved wrong. isis has been able to advance. and there are some u.s. military interests in the city of erbil, which is in that kurdish region. the pentagon got concerned if these isis forces continue rolling forward, that's what set off the alarm bells that prompted these strikes. >> the president has said he's very much against a full-scale military action in iraq. let's take a listen. >> as commander in chief i will not allow the united states to be dragged into fighting another war in iraq. >> how does the iraqi government feel about what's happened? >> well, we have heard from kurdish forces saying thank you to the united states for intervening for their support.
11:18 am
they have been asking for u.s. support and humanitarian aid. now, don't forget there's also a humanitarian situation going on in that region. there are ethnic and religious minorities that have been driven into the northern iraqi mountainous region by these isis forces and there's starvation. they're unable to get food. that was another part of what the president announced yesterday was humanitarian drops in that region as well. >> now, how do our european allies feel about what we've done? >> so far we've seen a lot -- at least within the united states we've seen support from across the partisan spectrum. we've seen democrats and republicans saying something needs to be done. but there is concern globally and especially among lawmakers in the united states. okay, this is what we're doing in the short term. what's the long-term strategy. obviously the iraq war had slipped in popularity. in june 71% of americans said the iraq war was not a good idea so obviously the country does not want to be drawn into a prolonged conflict. a lot of people are asking the question what comes next. how can we prevent this sliding
11:19 am
into a larger scale conflict. >> we'll be watching for that over the next days, i'm sure. thanks so much, carrie. for more, check out first read on nbcnews.com. a toddler managed to force the white house into a lockdown. the secret service says the toddler got away from his parents and squeezed through the fence last night. the north lawn and part of lafayette park were cleared as a precaution. the child was returned to his parents and the family was not detained or questioned. the all clear was given after just a couple of minutes. good thing the father didn't try to hop over the fence to grab his child. that could have been really -- a real situation. >> take you eye off of them for a second and they're gone. >> we know that from experience. so talk a little about what's going on in hawaii and here. >> well, as i told you earlier, it hit this morning, iselle, with very weak winds. it was only like 50-mile-an-hour winds when it hit. the main threat there is rain. and here we are talking about

own pace. >> by candle light, is that to just set a certain mood? >> the truth is it's all about setting your intention for the ride and also having -- no one is looking at you. it's really zen. it takes the elements of being at a dance party and dancing in the park and also the elements of yoga and bringing it together. >> how long have you been doing this? >> i was a rider for a year and then made the transition as an instructor. >> this is the first soul cycle here. where did it start? >> that's correct. it started in new york city. this is actually our 30th location. we're so thrilled that we opened yesterday here in d.c. >> who do you expect the studio to attract, men, women, who? >> the truth is everyone. our youngest rider is 11, our oldest rider is 78. we have men, women, children, grandparents ride with granddaughters. it's really a great mix. >> why don't you show us what a beginner would be doing. i suppose something like this?
11:48 am
>> yep. you can be seated in the saddle. >> abby can walk us through some of the key moves. anyone can do this. >> what's the next level up? >> reach down, add a little resistance, slide your hands out towards the end and come up out of the saddle. >> and you don't look at who's next to you and who might be going a whole lot faster than you. >> right. >> and what's the highest level? what would youe doing, pretty much the same as now? >> we're going to show a push hundred. you would drop your chest on the of the music, so it's just like that. >> it does look like fun. >> it is fun. >> and imagine doing it with a group of 50 people around you. >> and not looking at them because your in candlelight. >> correct. >> are there different level classes, though? some people coming in as beginners or enter meade yats? >> our classes are all at one level. the instructors can give you modifications based on your level. if you're a more seasoned rider,
11:49 am
you can do something a little more complicated but they give you levels if you're a beginner as well. >> how often do you suggest people take a class like this? >> most of our riders come between three and five times a week. to see noticeable differences in your body, we say at a minimum two times a week. >> and how expense if is it? >> classes in d.c. are $30. it's as cheap as personal training or the cost of two drinks. >> there are other plans for this area so you'll find a soul cycle near you. >> we're oning in bethesda at the end of the year and currently on m street. >> thanks for coming. i'm going to see if you can help me tighten these arms. i've been talking about that for days. >> thank you so much. our time is 11:49. coming up, what you need to know before renting a vacation house. plus storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein will be back with another chec
