[ gunshots ] >> reporter: the now familiar but shocking video of the attempted assassination of president ronald reagan. a d.c. police officer and secret service agent were injured. james brady, shot in the head suffered the longest lasting injuries. four days after his death at 73 come it is the startling news. a virginia medical examiner determined james brady died as a result of the 1981 shooting. hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity. he's had growing freedom in recent years. supervised visits to his mother's home. >> is the united states attorney's office now going to prosecute john hinckley for the homicide death of james brady? >> reporter: ted williams,

defense attorney, said hinckley could be tried again despite the acquittal. >> he was never meaning john hinckley tried for the homicide of mr. brady because mr. brady was alive. >> reporter: prosecutors would have an uphill battle. >> all of the evidence the government would be able to bring forth would be evidence they had in the 1981 when this incident occurred. >> reporter: williams says in the end. the question is whether the verdict would be different this time. >> they had some of the best attorneys in this country involved. some of the best psychologists and psychiatrists in this country involved. as a result of that, they came back -- the jury -- with not guilty by reason of insanity. >> in a statement tonight a spokesman says the matter is under review. live in northwest, jackie

benson, news 4. >> reports out of iraq tonight that hundreds of women belo lolg to the yazidi minority have been seized and potentially enslaved by isis militants. a second drop was performed to tens of thousands of them stranded on a mountain top by the islamic militants. for the first time since 2011, the u.s. has take military action in iraq launching three air strikes on isis targets near erbil. critics of the white house say strike wills do little to slow down isis. >> we are doing empty political gestures that won't have a significant humanitarian impact p, won't prevent genocide. >> president obama insisted that the u.s. military action in erbil in iraq will be limited. he says the strikes will continue if isis threatens americans working in erbil. the crisis in iraq won't delay president obama's vacation to martha's vineyard: he and the

first family will leave tomorrow. national security advisers will brief the president on the middle east and ukraine. the president will cut the vacation short, returning a week early on august 17th. >> tonight we know the name of a maryland teenager who drowned on his last day at summer camp. it was his 13th birthday. dennis kim died today in baltimore county. shomari stone spoke to the director of the camp in silver spring where dennis was a fixture for five years. >> this happened recently. i'm in shock. >> reporter: david back founded camp sonshine 33 years ago and said this is the first time a camper has drowned. >> i have never had anything like this happen. i just told my wife i'm holding it together. i'll fall apart tonight. >> reporter: dennis camp, 13, died on his 13th birthday in

baltimore county this afternoon. today is the last day of camp. it was supposed to be a day trip cell operation. the young teen has attended the camp for the past five years. he was swimming with friends when he went under in a roped off area where swimming is allowed. officials say he passed the test in order to swim in the deep end. life guards immediately jumped in but didn't find him. a firefidiveghter eam searched for nearly three hours and found his body. any idea what caused this? >> i have no idea. i talked to the life guard. he said it could be a medical thing. >> reporter: the lake is now closed all weekend. meantime, camp sonshine is heart broken. >> we're praying for the family. >> reporter: in silver spring, shomari stone, news 4. >> the ebola outbreak is being labeled a public health emergency. the world health organization made the declaration today and said there needs to be a

coordinated international response. meanwhile, we are hearing directly from dr. kent brantley from the first time. he released a statement from his isolation room today saying, "i am growing stronger every day. i thank god for his mercy as i have wrestled with this terrible disease." nancy whitebol's husband spoke and urged action. >> not turn a blind i eye to what's happening. if we do that then we are in grave danger of losing our humanity. >> writebol asked today for a starbucks coffee. now to the trial of former virginia first couple bob and maureen mcdonnll and testimony that former star scientific chairman johnny williams sobbed after investigators arrived at his doorstep. on the stand today, former company executive paul perito said he didn't know johnny williams had given the mcdonnells money and luxury

affect the weekend especially if you are traveling to the south. that and a lot of other things in a few minutes. >> thank uh you, doug. surveillance video shows robbers equipment from d.c. students. in they struck here monday, getting away with nine apple computers, just two weeks before school starts. the robbers got in through a side window. they hit the same school last september. they were never caught. that's when cardoza just re-opened after $130 million renovation. we checked with d.c. police. they say eight d.c. schools have been burglarized this summer. even as a loving mother and grandmother was laid to rest her family questions what led to her death. karen williams's car collide with a state police suv on the beltway in prince georges county. investigators say the 18-year-old cadet hit her after making a u-turn at an emergency

crossover. the family wants to know why he was behind the wheel. >> an officer who will have to come forward or will be brought forward to explain how the cadet did get to have keys to a maryland state police vehicle. he couldn't have gotten into the vehicle and driven off by himself. >> so far the cadet has not been charged. if you are traveling this weekend, be prepared to see extra police on the road. the drive to save lives campaign is under way. state troopers from maryland and virginia are looking for aggressive drivers including speeders, distracted drivers and people not wearing seat belts. the crack-down will run through sunday. a traffic alert for i-95 in virginia. detours will be posted at the hov lanes and the parkway interchange over the next few weeks. crews are doing final work on new express lanes that will run from stafford county to the beltway.

the detour could be in place up to four weeks. well, tonight it's official. republicans will nominate the 2016 presidential candidate in cleveland. the city was selected from a group of eight cities that bid to host the republican national convention. democrats were considering cleveland for their 2016 convention. five other cities are vying for the dnc. new tonight, a huge ruling that could be the first step toward college athletes getting paid. a federal judge ruled that college football and basketball players should be able to sell the rights to their names and likenesses. they weren't being company sated for the use of their images in ads, promotions and video games. the judge said the ncaa can cap the money as long as it's more than $5,000 a year. the ncaa is expected to appeal. a short break for hawaii before

the robber slammed into a bus stop, slowing him down. people held him until the police arrived. the window at rose jewelers on mt. pleasant has been repaired. there is something disappearing along the cno canal. the business improvement district thought people may need a place to relax. they set out about 50 cafe style chairs. so far ten of them have already turned up missing. the chairs are marked with signs asking people not to take them. they cost about $100 apiece. the group is planning to purchase and put out about 50 more chairs. take a look at this video. it's a before and after of a waterfall in hawaii. after tropical storm iselle made land fall a peaceful stream turned into rushing rapids. a stronger storm could push in this weekend. jennifer is following the storm

from honolulu. >> the storm lashed hawaii bringing driving rain and tropical storm force winds to the southeast shore. >> you can hear heavy winds blowing and the crackling. >> reporter: first light brought relief. >> the storm smacked into these great volcanic mountains. it helped the to break it apart. >> reporter: weekend but still strong enough to down trees and power lines leaving 18,000 without electricity in the island chain. >> some locations southeastern and eastern on the big island received close to 15 inches of rain. >> reporter: turning once picturesque waterfalls into rapids. >> we have not had major injury reports, casualty reports. because everybody is working together. >> reporter: as the focus of the work moves to cleaning up what iselle left behind oh officials are asking residents and

we'll see them across the region. currently at 75 degrees. winds out of the east under partly cloudy skies. what we are going to see are the temperatures will drop a little bit tonight. not a lot. down to 66. 70 winchester. 73 in fredricksburg. a nice night that will lead to a nice morning, too. saturday morning should be fine. no rain on storm team 4 radar. you don't have to look far down to the south. around richmond, roanoke, we have shower activity. an area of low pressure is trying to form down here. if it becomes strong enough it may bring moisture up. you see clouds around the region. you notice around philadelphia, new york city, back to pittsburgh. clear skies here. that's an area of high pressure suppressing all of the moisture to the south. if you're headed down to virginia beach over the next couple of days, cape hatteras, could be wet days for you. our region and our beaches are looking good. that's the good news here.
