rained on today. a slimmer of a chance. we'll talk about the increasing rain chances for the work week when i see you next. >> thanks. new this morning five people were shot overnight in the district. the shooting happened on n street southwest. this was just before 2:00. this morning, a block from nats park. two women, three men. all five were taken to the hospital and all are alive. police are not releasing a possible motive at this time. a 25-year-old reward is being offered for details about a deadly shooting we brought to you yesterday. 23-year-old dondre dyer was shot and killed on warder street in quebec place northwest. police are looking for clues to find the gunman. they've served a swarpts yesterday on rock creek road. police hauled off evidence. sources say the search was connected to the murder. no suspect has been arrested as of now. new air strikes by the united states could come soon

against islamic militants in the ongoing crisis in iraq. this weekend, the u.s. dropped four more bombs on isis. the military leaders say that group is firing on civilians taking shelter in the sinjar mountain range. those are a religious minority that president obama said isis wants to wipe out. the bombs destroyed multiple armored cars and a truck and the president made a statement yesterday this military action will be, quote, a long-term project in iraq. stranded on a mountain those thousands of civilians are surviving on more food and water dropped overnight. the british military joined the effort to deliver humanitarian aid to those people. just hours before u.s. planes made a similar air drop about 40,000 people are stranded on mount sinjar. overnight the united nations called on iraqi leaders to come together to bring the crisis to an end. this major story is one of several foreign policy challenges the u.s. isealing with right now. later this morning david gregory will have a complete coverage of those challenges including more on the crisis in iraq and the

president's plans to deal with the threat. "meet the press" airs at 10:30 on nbc 4. tony stewart says he will race today. this just hours after he hit and killed another driver. police say that he is not under criminal investigation right now. late yesterday stewart was in a dirt track race when another driver spun out. that driver then cut out of his car and walked on to the racetrack. that's when stewart hit him and sent him flying 50 feet. >> he was visibly shaken by this incident and has promised his continuing cpeti ith igio >> today's sprint cup series race begins at 1:00 this afternoon. a stove caught fire in montgomery county and destroyed a town home. take a look. the fire just gutted the house on early court silver spring. montgomery county fire said the fire started around 8:30 last

night. the woman was rescued by firefighters. the fire did more than $100,000 worth of damage. firefighters will be back on scene this morning checking smoke alarms and talking fire safety with several of those neighbors. cooking led to a hotel fire that happened down at the national harbor. prince george fire says the fire broke out on the 11th floor of the wyndham hotel on mariner passage. the hotel sprinkles put out the flames and may sound obvious but firefighters want us to stress the dangers of cooking if you're not paying attention. right now, a group is putting a new memorial at the national mall called the living wall of honor. news 4's derrick ward joins us live by the world war ii memorial. this is a memorial that has a lot of members in the community involved. >> indeed, it does. a lot of symbolism with it as well. we are here at the world war ii memorial which encompasses what's going on here. rhetorically and physically. take a look i'm going to direct

you to the living wall. it's replete with symbolism. the silhouettes on the right, like the iwo jima memorial, the figure reaching out, symbolic of people from that era reaching out across time to modern people, people in the post-9/11 era. even that in the middle is filled full of symbolism, five stars that represent the five branches of the military, army, navy, air force, marines and coast guard. active duty and retired and reserve members. this is all about observing the ac sacrifices made by folks in the post-9/11 world. we hear about the importance of doing that observance from one of the members of this organization. >> we found that the 99% want to help, they don't know how to help. and they haven't been asked to help. through both democratic and republican administration, the call for shared sacrifice has never been made. we are making that with the code of support foundation.

starting today your taxi driver in montgomery county will be part of a union. drivers say they work as many as 16 hours a day an are paid less than minimum wage. they're also losing business they say to ride sharing companies such as uber and lift. today about 1,000 drivers will announce their affiliation with the national taxi workers alliance. that group also represents drivers in prince george's county. if you are driving in prince george's county, this morning, you got to be careful on the beltway. you should watch out in montgomery and fairfax as well. state police are teaming up to promote safety awareness on the highway in both maryland and virginia. this is part of a multistate safety campaign called drive to save lives. troopers are looking for aggressive and reckless drivers an for all of you who text from

behind the wheel. >> this morning, engineering crews in d.c. trying to figure out what caused a building's roof to collapse. no one was hurt and that building collapse which happened on stents street and the building has been vacant for years. the roof, part came down along with part of the wall. firefighters evacuated the building to be safe. >> what they told us this morning, there were gentlemen working and five minutes later after they started working, the building collapsed. >> neighbors tell news 4 the building has been empty at least ten years and they say it was a magnet for drug use and squatters. they also say they've made a lot of calls to have something done about the building before that collapse happened. >> right now in hawaii, a big mess to clean up as the island prepares for round two of tropical weather. the emotional toll these storms are having on one family in particular. as they try to help out their neighbors. >> what you got, chuck? >> we have the latest track on julio coming up a little later in the show. in the short term we're looking

new this morning, nine people have survived a plane crash in iran, according to the iran state news agency. at least 40 people including seven died. the crash happened near tehran

the country's capital shortly before before 1:00 in the morning our time. investigators say the plane's engine shut down while in the air. an engine problem on ano plane grounded it before it could take off. passengers should be in new york today after they were rushed off their jetblue flight headed that way. the plane's engine caught fire and the pilot stopped the plane before it could leave the airport in puerto rico last night. firefighters quickly put out t fire. three people were hurt in the evacuation. this morning storm team 4 is tracking hurricane julio. the national weather service has downgraded julio to a category 1 hurricane, the least powerful level. julio isn't expected to actually hit the hawaii islands but pass just to the north. nbc's jay cobb rascon reports on how people are cleaning up after tropical storm iselle.

from the beltway to spring vail road. the road is not closed. if you get off the beltway at georgetown pike vdot says think about using a different route. the road work is expected to last two months. and if you ride the rails and take metro today track work is even affecting the silver line. no stations are closed, however. you can't take the silver line east beyond stadium armory so you to use the blue line instead. those blue line trains are running every 24 minutes, however, and on the red line you could have a 16 minute wait. >> it is going to be a hot one for a church service this morning. thieves broke in the building, stole parts from the ac unit but church leaders tell darcy spencer they're not angry with the thieves. >> this is our cage. where we hold all of our air conditioning units. >> reporter: associate pastor daniel ray shs t dag >> came in and methodically dismantled four uts

welcome back. the naacp is asking the fbi to investigate the death of a missouri teenager shot by police. the st. louis chapter says the fbi will ensure there's a transparent investigation into 18-year-old michael brown's death. the shooting happened yesterday afternoon and police are not saying what led up to the incident, only that the 18-year-old was shot by an officer. meanwhile, brown's mother wants answers. >> they told me how many times my son was shot. eight. you're not god.

you're not going to take somebody from her. if that was the case, i brought him here, i should have took him from here. that was mine. that belonged to me. >> brown's mother right there said her son just graduated from high school and was looking forward to starting college next week. overnight dozens of people clashed with police over the shooting. >> this is a video you have to see to believe. an ohio postal worker in a lot of trouble this morning for throwing away mail. take a look. this is cell phone video someone caught. the woman carries a white crate to the dumpster. there she is lifting it up and tossing all that undelivered mail into it. she goes back to her car and throws away more mail. the letter carrier now under investigation. the mail we can tell you was eventually collected and delivered. folks living in that area say they knew something was wrong because they hadn't been getting their mail for several days. >> could you imagine, what if there was a ton of wedding invitations in there, any mail, it's pretty horrible situation. what would be your reasoning?

about being different and cutting edge. >> it's neat we have one-of-a-kind photos from our wedding day that no one else has had before. >> reporter: new york democratic congressman shawn maloney hired a drone photographer for his wedding recently and especially glaring problem because the faa says commercial drone photography is illegal and the congressman sits on the house transportation committee. he says he didn't understand the rules which would allow a friend to take pictures from his drone at no charge. >> the faa has been dragging their feet on this and the longer they wait the more folks are going out and flying without any rules. >> reporter: last year in wyoming, a drone literally crashed a wedding when a wedding photographer flying a dne lost control, leading to a painful bump and a minor cut to the groom. yet despite the risks wedding photographers say they're hearing requests for drones. but veteran photographer carlos baez says the weddings he shoots
