going to be a long, drawn out procedure. >> why they say this ride did what it was supposed to do. a gunman shot and kelled a 2-year-old girl. and a crash put a race car driver in an unwanted spotlight. i'm chris lawrence. there are some serious questions for six flags tonight after riders were stranded in the air for hours. more than 20 people went to the park today and ended up on a roller coaster ride they'll never forget. seven kids, 17 adults, stuck on a stalled ride in suburban maryland. most were sitting upright, but some tilted sideways, 75 feet off the ground. firefighters had to climb up the

track and strap the cars down to keep them from moving. >> where it was sitting, gravity takes control. there's no brakes in that port of the track. >> he looked the riders in the eye and let them know it won't be quick or easy. >> we'll get you down as soon as we possibly can, but it's going to be a long and drawn out procedure. >> the joker's jinx is only supposed to last 75 seconds. firefighters had to bring them water and umbrellas to protect them from the sun. >> when you release restraint on individual cars, everybody in that car is in a released position. we can't allow that to happen. >> rescuers had to go car by car to individually harness each rider, then release the ride's restraint and pull them off safely. >> they just wanted to get off there, and they had no problem getting to our towers. >> paramedics checked out all 24

riders, and no one needed to go to the hospital. the ride had been going 60 miles per hour when it stalled. they released a statement saying while we are not yet sure what performed the stoppage, the ride performed as it was supposed to. it has a computerized safety system. if it detects a problem it can cause the ride to stop. it won't run again until six flags completes an investigation into what went wrong. this is now the second time this month that six flags has had to deal with its roller coasters leaving riders stuck in the air. just last weekend in new jersey a ride lost power just as riders reached the peak 230 feet in the air. those riders had to carefully walk down the access stairs. the but no one was h there either. our coverage of today's rescue won't stop here. we'll have raw video of the

story online. we're following two developing stories in prince georges county. they're investigating a woman's death. she was shot and killed along sycamore lane, right down the road from the census bureau. police haven't released her name but don't believe it was a random shooting. they're offering an award for information. a crime that even police are having a hard time understanding. someone shot into a town home in landover and ended up killing a 2-year-old girl. now investigators may have some key evidence in their hands. news 4's darcy spencer is live with the latest developments. >> rerter: it is definitely a tough story for everyone involved. we are live. the investigation is continuing down the street from here. police are sell looking for the man who shot and killed that little girl who was just about one month shy of her 3rd

birthday. police have secured some videotape they're hoping will help with the investigation. as night fell police continued their search for a gunman who took the life of a 2-year-old girl. earlier police recovered video from a crime camera just up the street from where the girl was killed in her own home. that video could show who pulled the trigger. >> little bit of a shock that something like this happened in broad daylight. >> reporter: this man lives next door. he also has a 2-year-old. he was not at home when the shooting happened. he received a frantic call from his dad. >> it hits really close to home. to be next door, and then to have a 2-year-old. things like this shouldn't happen at all. >> reporter: police say the girl was not the intended target. two men had been fighting outside the house. one returned with a gun and shot multiple times into the house where he believed the man had

gone. >> one of those rounds make it is inside and strikes this girl. >> reporter: the little girl was in an upstairs bedroom. >> so sad, 2-year-old innocent young one. really sad. only thing we can do is pray for that family. >> reporter: pam avery lives up the street and has complained to police about crime in the neighborhood. >> why would you start shooting in the middle of the day, i'm coming home from church to hear a child has been killed in her home. that's deplorable. >> reporter: they are hoping that the man will be found or turn himself in and face the consequences for taking the life of an innocent little girl who should have been safe in her home on a sunday afternoon. >> it's sickening, man, it's too much opportunity for people to be out here shooting each other. >> reporter: crime stoppers is offering up to $25,000 for reward money for helping solve this case.

looking overseas right now. israel and hamas are beginning a new truce after both parties accepted a 72-hour cease-fire. negotiators in egypt brokered the deal and cleared the way for humanitarian aid to get into gaza. now they can start talking about a long-term truce. this is the second time in less than a week that both sides agreed to a cease-fire, but the last one fell apart within hours. a lot of people in our area are hoping this peace can hold. and some are holding a silent vigil outside holocaust museum. some were trying to draw attention to the number of palestinians killed in the conflict, nearly 2,000 people have been killed. there's been no break to the violence in iraq. it's so bad the state department has started evacuating u.s. personnel. they've already cleared out the consulate in erbil.

the u.s. military launched more strikes, taking out key mortar positions that belong to isis. religious refugees are making their way to the syrian border. a roadway was opened for them. but thousands of others may still be trapped. the yazidis are relying on aid that's being dropped from helicopters. this is new video of that operation. isis has threatened genocide against this group. militants have killed at least 500 yazidi. isis buried some alive and took hundreds of the women as slaves. tonight, the racing world is oss of a promising yuck driver, kevin ward junior was run over last night by tony stewart. the crash happened on a dinlly lit race track in upstate new york. the two drivers collided and smashed ward's car. he was angry, got out of the car

police, that's what was shouted after the shooting of a teenager. a 18 year old was shot and killed during a confrontation saturday. it started with a physical confrontation inside a police car and spilled out into the street with the officer shot the teenager multiple times. >> one of the questions was, was the other subject, the deseedant, the 18 year old armed with a hand gun, a rifle, any type of weapon at the time. the answer is no. the genesis of this was a physical confrontation. >> while the race of the officer has not been released, it's a predominantly black town and emotions are running high. the naacp says it plans to launch its own investigation. crews have just started a major repaving project on georgetown pike from the beltway to spring vail road in great falls. they'll do the work overnight. and it's going to take about two

it is a living tribute to our military veterans. today dozens of volunteers came together to build this memorial, a 16-foot long wall filled with more than 1,000 flowers. the wall is dedicated to post 9-11 veterans and will be on display at arlington national cemetery until september 11. a local restauranter is getting death threats. he got a call after the flag went up outside bennie's bar and grill. we have his story new at 11:00. >> reporter: on the streets of the nation's capitol, fervent debate and protests, but not so much in the suburbs. >> this is america. >> reporter: and this is potomac. and this is bennie. this flag someone has a problem with.
