started over clothing. news 4s, darcy spencer live in landover with the new reaction from the little girl's family. darcy? >> reporter: jim, i'm standing across the street from where the shooting happened yesterday. we can clearly see the bullet holes in the siding. we spoke with family members for the first time today of the little girl. she was about to turn 4 years old. she was a happy child. she loved everyone. everyone loved her. her mom had three sons. she desperately wanted a little girl. she finally got her. now, she's gone. >> my grandbaby. i loved her so much. >> reporter: the grandmother of the 3-year-old can't believe she's gone. >> we all got a scar that will never heal that we have to live with the rest of our lives. >> reporter: the man wanted for the murder, she wants him to face the maximum punishment.

he doesn't deserve the chair for taking an innocent child's life. >> reporter: she was playing upstairs in landover sunday afternoon. that's when a gunman sprayed the house with bullets. we counted half a dozen holes in the siding and under the window sill. >> my daughter had three boys and tried so hard for this girl. she got a girl and he took her away from her. >> reporter: the suspect was dating someone who lives in the house and believed an acquaintance was wearing some of his clothes. the two fought. wallace returned with a gun and shot at the house where he believed the intended target had gone. >> assuming it was the young man he had the fight with, we do not believe he was in the house at the time the shooting occurred. >> reporter: this is the man who pulled the trigger. he has a criminal record and is on the run. karla mack lives at the house where the shooting happened. she was not at the house when it

to show you most of the video. chris gordon was in the courtroom. we'll have more. a nanny facing 20 years behind bars after admitting she stole $400,000 from her employe empler jbes in gaithersburg with more on this story. >> reporter: investigators have not accounted for all of the money involved in this case. neighbors tell us that the suspect, 50-year-old katia told them she was, quote, poor." prosecutors claim she stole 400,000 dlarls from the cup who will employed her as a nanny. according to court documents, she wrote herself 118 checks from the victim's money market account totaling $431,542. prosecutors claimed she used some of the money to buy a house

in africa, send money transfers and a casino. court documents indicate when the theft was discovered, she said i ask your forgiveness, you can take me to court, send me to jail your actions will be justified. the nanny who lives here in gaithersburg faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison at her sentences in october. jackie bensen, news 4. a loudoun county teenager died after trying to pull off a dangerous stunt he saw on a popular movie. the 17-year-old was air lifted to a hospital last tuesday after a severe head injury. police tell us he was car surfing and trying to re-enact a scene from "21 jump street" in the parking lot of dulles plaza. developing right now in prince george's county, the injury in the markel ross murder

trial just found his killer, trayvon bennett guilty of second degree murder. it didn't take long for the jury to find him guilty on the murder and armed robbery charges. he's facing life in prison now. back in 2012, ross was walking to centl ghcho when he was shot and killed. tracee wilkins is at the courthouse and will have details on the verdict and reaction at the bottom of the hour. now to a life picture from chopper 4 showing you the roller coaster that got stuck at six flags amusement park in largo. it is still shut down following the mishap yesterday that left two dozen riders stranded for five hours. we are hearing the firsthand accounts of what it was like as riders waited for help and what rescuers encountered when they got there. >> we have a, looks like a four-car ride at the very top of the roller coaster.

coasters and been fine. >> reporter: what are the chances? >> getting hit by lightning, i think. >> reporter: we caught up with them in rockville. they have been on the joker's jinx a lot. before they got on, they say something didn't seem right. >> the ride before us, i saw it not make it too much. it was really slow. so, i had a feeling about it, then, you know, i want to ride it. it's one of my favorite rides. >> you have been on the ride before? >> plenty of times. >> reporter: reality set in. two girls behind them started crying. they started thinking. >> i'm on the right side, leaning down. all i could see is where we would fall and, it's pretty scary. >> reporter: as for six flags, the spokesperson didn't want to talk on camera. they told us all rides go through a daily inspection. roller coasters go through three independent yearly inspections. a unit now investigating. until then, the ride remains

sinjar. disaster assistance response team is helping. some escaped their perch on the mountain and we are working with international partners for options to bring them to safety. i want to thank, in particular, the united kingdom, france and other countries providing assistance to the iraqi people. our aircraft remain in position to anyone who threatens safety. this advances the limited military objectives we outlined in iraq, protecting american citizens, providing advice and assistance to iraqi forces as they battle the terrorists and joining with international partners to provide humanitarian aid. there is no american solution for the crisis in iraq. the only lasting solution is for iraqis to come together and form

an inclusive government, one that represents legitimate interests of all iraqis and the fight against isil. iraq took a promising step forward in this effort. last month, the iraqi people named a new president. today, the president named a new prime minister designate. under the iraqi constitution, this is an important step toward forming a new government that can unite iraqs different communities. earlier today, vice president biden and i called to congratulate him and urged him to form a new cabinet as quickly as possible, inclusive of all iraqis and represents all iraqis. i pledged our support to him as well as the president and speaker as they work to form this government. i urge all iraqi political leaders to work through the

process in the days ahead. this new leadership went fast. they have to regain confidence from the citizens governing inclusively and taking steps. the united states stands ready to support a government that addresses the needs and grievances of all iraqi people. we are ready to work with other countries in the region to deal with the humanitarian crisis and challenges in iraq. mobilizing that support will be easier once the new government is in place. these have been difficult days in iraq. the country faced many challenges in recent history. i'm sure there will be difficult days ahead, but, just as the united states will remain individual lent to the threat posed to our people by isis, we partner with iraq and the terrorist forces. without question, that effort will be advanced. if iraqis continue to build on the progress and come together to support a new and inclusive

the fbi is now opening an investigation into the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager by police in st. louis.

a crowd shouted don't shoot me today as they marched to a police station to protest the killing of michael brown. the 18-year-old was shot after an altercation with a police officer. he was not armed. it led to an outcry in the town of ferguson. people said little publicly about what happened overnight. more than 30 people were arrested after angry protests turned into violent riots and looting. >> decide when you gonna take somebody from her. that was mine. that belonged to me. >> they want the officer who killed brown to be identified, fired and charged in the killing. we are weeks away from the first day of school in maryland. the health department wants to remind parents of the new immunization rules that start this fall. kindergarten students are required to have two chickenpox

vaccines. seventh graders one tdap and one meningitis vaccine. teachers are getting ready for the first days of school. a training session was held at henry wise junior high school in upper marlboro. it's part of a week of activities designed to ease into the school system. prince george's is welcoming 800 new teachers for the 2014-'15 school year. >> reporter: i'm dianna russini. we are winding down training camp here in richmond. for the last two and a half weeks, we have been showing you the big stars to keep an eye on. there's another star on this team. a reality star. his name is chris neil. he plays on defense. this summer, he was on american muscle. his teammates are raving about his performance.

82 degrees. if you are not getting the rain, you have showers on the way. umbrella weather, yes and wet roads for not only this evening, tomorrow night. it's a slow drive on area roads. 74 is the temperature by 11:00 p.m. do we get the cool overnight? not really, upper 60s to 70s. take a look at future weather through the next 48 hours here. you can see the rain moving through tomorrow morning. areas of rain and back to the west around winchester, i-81 is where there will be pockets of moderate and heavy rain showing up. it's during the late morning hours, around 10:00, 11:00 a.m. where we have the better opportunity to see that. this is 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. not just moderate and heavy rain, but thunderstorms that could be producing isolated high winds as well as heavy rain and maybe localized flooding throughout the area. here we are morning hours on wednesday. this is 3:30 when the rain pushes out. back to sunshine for wednesday,

now we turn to your personal and financial security and a new list is out for the fastest growing scams across the country. >> erika gonzalez joins us now with the best ways to protect yourself. erika? >> this is really a list to pay attention to because it comes from the consumer federation of america. these are the top two, top two scams going around the country right now. number one on the scam list, telemarketing and unwanted calls. scammers are embracing new technologies to mask their real identities and locations, sometimes placing calls from overseas. we have seen a lot of these in our area recently. many callers are nearly impossible to track. if you get a call saying you have won a prize or specially selected for an offer, the ftc says check out the company first. of course, never give out your

personal information over the phone. just don't do that. next is home improvement and construction. be aware of contractors going door-to-door offering great rates. the best way to protect yourself is by checking out the contractors with friends and neighbors. the ftc says you should get estimates from multiple companies and make sure the contractor is insured. a warning from metro, the transit agency says fake smart cards are popping up. if you see discount cards, do not buy them. the best way to avoid becoming a victim is to pay full price. that way, you at least know you are getting the full value. any card purchased from an individual or online auction site could be flagged for deactivation, even if the card looks legit. only buy from licensed venders,

i want justice. i want justice. if i have my way, he could be put away for life. >> at 5:30, the verdict is in. the mother could get her wish. the man accused of killing her child learns his fate. some justice for the mother of an honor student gunned down on the way to school. >> it's been almost two years since he was shot, but it didn't take long for the verdict to come back. tracee wilkins joins us now with the ross family reaction. tracee. >> reporter: not long at all to decide trayvon bennett was guilty. >> i think he should stay in

jail the rest of his life. at least he still has his life. >> reporter: it's been a long road for elizabeth ross. today, the chapter is coming to a close. the jury found bennett guilty of pulling the trigger. bennett was found guilty on numerous charges of the killing of marquel ross including first degree felony murder. he was shot and killed on a sidewalk in october, 2012 on his way to central high school. two of bennett's friends testified against him. there were no eyewitnesses. bennett's confession on a jail wiretap is all they needed. he said, quote, i tried to rob a kid. he bucked. he flinched, i jumped back and shot him. he was looking for money to accompany friends on a college homecoming trip to north carolina. >> this is a high school student who lost his life for no reason,

what so ever. gunned down on his way to school. i can't think of a more deserving sentence. mr. bennett deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail. >> reporter: he faces another trial using the same gun on the same block. that person survived. >> he's a dangerous young man. >> reporter: his mother is pleased with the conviction and is ready for the sentencing. >> when you have a person that walks like that, they beat the system. there is justice. it's my justice. >> reporter: that 2012 school year was a violent one in this county. marquel ross was the six of high school students to lose their lives to acts of violence involving guns. at 6:00, we'll have more information on what's happening in the cases. this young man, trayvon bennett will report back to court october 10 where he will be

sentenced. he's looking at life without parole plus 25 years. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. a violent carjacking in the district left a man in the hospital tonight. it happened this afternoon on martin luther king jr. avenue in anacostia, not far from the metro station. police got a call about a stabbing there. once they got there, they found a man with multiple stab wounds. he was conscious when they rushed him to the hospital. he was the victim of a carjacking. police are looking for a silver ford escape with virginia tags. inside from the insiders as more top officials in the mcdonnell administration testify. the former governor and his wife face 14 corruption charges. they are accused of accepting gifts and loans from a businessman in exchange for promoting his company's dietary supplement. julie carey joins us live from richmond with the latest

tonight. julie? >> reporter: you will be hard pressed to find a top staffer who hadn't heard of this pill in 2011 and 2012, the dietary supplement jonnie williams wanted them to push. this photo of bob mcdonnell holding a bottle of anata block was on the star scientific website until it was abruptly pulled down. they testified about a scene that looked much like the photo. sarah wilson says top officials were huddled talking about health care. at the end of the meeting, the governor pulled a bottle of anatablock out andid how it was helpful.

supposed to be. he was visibly upset. another witness today, bob mcdonnell's ex-brother-in-law. he handled some of the checks. i'm julie carey, news 4. today marks five months since the man at the center of the political corruption case in the district pleaded guilty. jeffrey thompson admitted fun l funneling money. including mayor vincent gray. the federal prosecutors office told the news 4 i-team, they do in the intend to -- others whom he says he conspired. mayor gray denied the accusations and says he's innocent. he's a star in the nascar world and leader on joe gibbs racing team. we'll tell you what is next for tony stewart after running over and killing a fellow driver.

the auto racing world is still reeling today after an unspeakable tragedy. a young driver struck and killed by one of nascar's biggest stars. jason pugh joins us with new information out just in hour. >> the sheriff in up state new york made a statement. kevin ward jr. died from massive blunt trauma. he was struck by the car of stewart after exiting his vehicle to confront stewart after they were involved in a crash. this was the scene at the motor sports park in up state new york. flowers adorning the fence. the 20-year-old was struck and killed by stewart saturday. investigators don't have evidence to show a criminal act occurred, criminal charges haven't been ruled out. >> there are no facts that exist

prison, she said the only reason the victim's head is moving is because you are stomping on it. he is unconscious. you went out looking for a fight. you are a danger to the community. it took place april 62013 in a parking garage in bethesda. the top prosecutor says he got what he deserves. >> i think the sentence that was given by the judge, well beyond the sentencing guidelines absolutely appropriate. this man was a major offender when he walked into the courtroom. when he first went on trial. >> reporter: his friend feels jus advertise was not done. >> there's no rehabilitation in this. >> you don't think the sentencing is fair? >> i think it's ridiculous. >> reporter: prosecutors played the second video from the phone showing him involved in a similar beating and stomping and prosecutors played a phone call he made from jane to a friend laughing about the fights he got

into regularly. in court before sentencing, he broke down in tears apologizing the the victim and his family for all he has put them through. he said that alcohol addiction took him to the dark side. he is embarrassed when he sees that video tape. tonight, on news 4 at 6:00, we'll hear from the samaritan that broke up the fight and i will ask him why he got involved and would he do it again. at the montgomery courthouse, chris gordon, news 4. a new rocketship school in our area is not a nasa facility, it's a charter school. a 54,000 square foot school is planned in a wooded area near woodland terrace housing complex. plans include an outdoor play area. it focuses on kindergarten through grade five. this company has schools in four cities and hopes to open in d.c. by 2015.

if you feel like you blinked and summer is nearly over, you are not alone. at least one official in maryland wants summer to last longer for school kids. the washington reports peter franchot will launch a petition to get school start dates after labor day. it could be better for families. >> going to school and then coming back for the labor day. >> yeah, you always take that monday off, don't you, right after? >> there's a lot of things we haven't thought about day camp and summer programs for kids. >> students in all of maryland's school districts head back over the next couple weeks. you can find your school start date on our website, www.nbcwashington.com. imagine looking out back at your child's kiddie pool and seeing a wild animal taking a dip. check out this video from a guy in southern california.

been disconnected. facebook says zara is friendly, but shy. he is struggling, but a fighter. that's how an attorney for comedian tracy morgan described his condition after the car crash. mar gan suffered critical injuries he is being treated for in rehab. another comedian was killed. the truck driver pleaded not guilty, but morgan's attorney said the driver had been awake for more than a day when the crash happened and walmart is to blame. >> why is it walmart's responsibility? >> he works for walmart. i'm going to show, if i have to in court, that that's the culture. that's what they set up. they know. >> in a new statement to nbc news, walmart called the accident a terrible tragedy. the retail giant says it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and

working to resolve all the remaining issues as a result of the accident. now, to the latest on the ebola outbreak. three missionaries who worked with patients in africa are in quarantine in north carolina and will remain there for three weeks. none of the workers showed signs of a deadly virus. among them, the husband of nancy writebol. that crisis unfolding half way around the world is hitting home for a family in the northeast. >> a pennsylvania woman says her son is the first american to be killed by the virus. his death comes a short time after it claimed one of her daughters. our sister station in philadelphia sat down with her. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: there is no consoling her. the mother says in a matter of a couple weeks, she lost her son and daughter to ebola.

her family is thrust into the national spotlight. her son was the first american killed by the virus. >> i can't live. >> reporter: patrick sawyer fell ill flying from nigeria to liberia. the 40-year-old consultant with the liberian ministry was enroute to a conference when he collapsed upon arriving. he died five days later. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: now, we are learning, patrick who lived in minnesota with his wife and three kids visited his sister in the hospital two weeks earlier while in liberia. mom says he rushed to his sister's side after she became sick. she lived in liberia with her feon say and son died a day after. at the time, no one knew she has ebola. the family says doctors only tested her remains after she pass zed away. now, this mother says she needs
