tom? >> moderate to heavy downpours coming through. it is welcomed rain. the flowers and lawns and gardens are gladly soaking up this rain that's now coming right through the metro area. right now, in washington, we're getting some moderate showers. another moderate one north of fredericksburg, that came through washington now moving into montgomery county. this is the zone of moderate to heavy rain. that is now moving through silver spring, up toward ulney and wheaton, tracking up 29, 95 corridor heading north. across fairfax county, 66 beltway from springfield toward burke, verge yain. farther north and west, too, leesburg, north and west of there, moderate downpour between leesburg, toward hillsboro. we'll have this off and on here as we get into the afternoon. we have a threat of severe storms, this yellow zone, for virginia. most of maryland, eastern shore

and eastern west virginia, slight risk of damaging winds. it looks like that won't be until late afternoon or early evening greater chance early to mid evening early this evening. back with a look at a big change on the way beginning tomorrow. >> thank you, tom. we'll check in now with news 4's aaron gilchrist. aaron? >> a mysterious death in maryland. state medical exan now saying a mother and two daughters who were found dead in hagerstown died from heat stroke, accidental heat stroke. we told you about this back in mid june, when a car was found at the parking lot at western heights middle school there in hagerstown. police were able to determine that a 32-year-old woman and her two baby daughters, 18-month-old and 6-month-old were found dead in this car for no apparent reason, they were in this parking lot. police had said that they knew the mother had park there had early, early that morning in the 6:00 hour and they found her and her children in the car around

went in and took out those mortar positions. >> thank you, aaron. we are keeping an eye on the middle east. palestinian news reports negotiators say israel violated the cease fire agreement when israeli boats fired at gaza fishermen. there were no reports of any injuries. egypt is trying to negotiate a long-term truce between hamas and israel. this is the second day of a three-day cease fire. israeli troops are stationed along the border. right now, virginia's former attorney general is in court for bob mcdonnell's corruption trial. giving multiple days of testimony. now a lobist and represented jonnie williams, a man who gave mcdonnell thousands of dollars of gifts. in other words, he knows both sides well. he says he feels for the former first family. >> for the commonwealth, but for the family. ready to go in and get this over with.

which republican he will be running against in the fall. that's kind of significant because especially in connecticut, the governor, dan malloy, has been struggling in approval ratings. he may have a race on his hands. we mostly talk about republican governors around the state who are in trouble, incumbents facing backlash from voters. two democrats may get opponents and they'll have to s going into the fall whether they can hold on to their seats. >> with that race in minnesota, the winner could face senator al franken. >> that's right. there are four different candidates who are facing off for the privilege of going against al franken. this is really significant. al franken barely won that seat. there was an eight-month legal battle. he won by a handful of votes. now it's not that much of a race. mike mcfadden is a businessman who was favored to win that republican nomination. al franken really isn't in the kind of trouble six years ago we

standing water, tom. >> it's not creeks and streams flooding, just ponding of water. watch out for that. as my aunt katherine used to say it's raining hammer handles. areas north of washington now, we look at the storm team 4 radar. areas you see in the red, howard county near columbia, 29 and up 95 between washington and baltimore. another batch of some heavy rain as well. this area in the orange just north of fredericksburg in northern spotsylvania county. eastern suburbs in about another half hour and this one that did come through fairfax into montgomery and washington is now passing into howard county out of southeastern montgomery county. extreme northern prince george's getting moderate downpours from college park to laurel, tracking

off to the north and east. won't be lasting very long. not long enough to cause creeks and streams to go over their banks. if you can postpone it, wait till this one wave goes by and head on out after that. otherwise, the beltway, the north side of town, is getting hammered with moderate to heavy rain right now. as we look at the sky over washington, look at these low clouds hanging over the city. you can't even see the washington monument. there is the jefferson memorial. 73 with moderate rain at reagan national. it's very humid now. light, easterly breeze. we'll have temperatures hovering in the low 70s to mid 70s. warm into the upper 70s later today. upper 70s on the eastern shore. father west where that rain has been falling earlier this morning in the 60s in the shenandoah valley in the mountains. later today, this yellow zone is a zone of potential severe storms. a slight risk of an isolated storm. looks like maybe early to mid

evening this evening, producing some damaging winds. includes just about all of virginia, maryland, eastern shore and west virginia. here is the timing on some more showers coming as of 3:00 pm. much of the rain will be east of washington. another band coming through between 6:00 pm until maybe 9:00 or 10:00 pm, coming in to the west by 11:00. might have a few isolated thunderstorms with thunder and lightning. a small chance some of those isolated storms mid evening could produce damaging winds. how much rain? could get a couple of inches of rain west of west virginia. including parts of faulkner county. another batch farther south could get moderate to heavy downpours, inch or two in the northern neck. around the metro area, generally around an inch or less as it tapers off and ends tonight. later today in the upper 70s. lot of clouds around. showers and thunder coming on through. and then tomorrow, breezy. turning much less humid. big change.

firefighters are responding to a call earlier today when the truck lost control and slammed into a utility pole. in the alexandria of fairfax county with more for us now. >> we call them when we need our help. this morning, firefighters from station 11, penndot neighborhood of alexandria crashed. the crash put the engine on its side and four firefighters in the hospital. police are conducting the investigation and we w as they got the truck upright. dom inion power says the accident hit a power line and homes are without power.

i'm told the roads were wet. according to battalion chief. >> an engine and ladder truck headed to an emergency call and the engine went in and handled the call. it is difficult to see. it's not something we see very often. but the police will be wil do their investigation and the fire department will do their own investigation. and we just feel fortunate that all four members were, you know, taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. >> reporter: firefighters were taken to mt. vernon hospital with minor injuries. in alexandria, zachary kiesch, news 4. take a look at this surveillance video. a stroller with a child strapped in is sucked under the subway tracks in london. here it is from a different angle as the train leaves the station, the stroller gets pulled on to the tracks. a man left the child in the stroller at the bottom of the stairs to go up and grab some luggage. a woman who saw the stroller roll off the platform jumped on to the tracks to save the child. police released the video yesterday in hopes of finding

that good samaritan and to make sure the baby was not hurt. and right now, there's a big food fight happening over a popular yogurt from home foods over this 365 everyday value plain greek yogurt. we already told you last month consumer reports found the yogurt contains nearly six times the sugar listed on the label. now there is a class action lawsuit saying the supermarket chain is misleading consumers. home foods is still selling the yogurt with the same label right now. the supermarket chain release aid statement saying it strives to provide the highest quality product with his accurate product labeling. good news for drivers. new bridge opening today cld coop you safer on the road. plus, we have seen celebrities and politicians do this ice bucket challenge, they call it. it's all over social media. the cause is helping to get people startd with. we'll tell but it, coming up.

right now, crews are preparing to open a new bridge that could keep you safer in leesburg. the new bridge over route 7 bypass is set to open in about 30 minutes from now. live where the ribbon ceremony wrapped up, derrick ward joins us. >> reporter: they had this ribbon cutting a few minutes ago. we're on the overpass. that's the old leesburg bypass down there. it gives you a sense of how massive a project this is if you look at the differences in elevation here. wide focus so happy that this is finally open and this project is finally finished. they cut a ribbon on the bridge over troubled traffic. it replaces an intersection that

had become notorious for accidents outside of the town of leesburg. one particularly bad year saw 50 crashes wrr leesburg bypass met sickland road. much smoother sailing for motors on the bypass and sickland road. >> it gets me to work faster. >> it doesn't have access from 15. that's the only thing i noticed. >> reporter: yes, there is a tradeoff. >> we did have to close off direct access, but the bigger benefit is that we keep the traffic on route 15 flowing, which was really importa for us. >> the overpass project is part of the broader effort to keep up with the growth in this part of loudon county. the town of leesburg are busy with their respeivec it's wk pgrs. >>caseju to the south here that there's another piece that the town has been working on. they're finished with two lanes that are still continuing to

officer in the squad car and that's when shots were fired, police say. >> anybody who knew my son -- >> he was a good boy, didn't deserve any of this. >> reporter: calling for an end to the violence. the fbi is now investigating the case. there's a stunt o there right now that we want to warn your kids about. a teenager in sterling died doing this. it's called car surfing. we found video on youtube to show you what it looks like. 17-year-old mohammed kalid was doing just this at the plaza last week when he fell off the top of the car, hit his head and died. as you start to get your kids ready to go back to school, teachers in st. mary's county are getting ready, too. they want to make a stand this year. teachers in st. mary's county school are cutting out homework. they're protesting by cutting out the work done outside the school day, including overtime, volunteering for extracurricular activities and contacting

parents in after-school hours. the protest comes as the teachers union and school board negotiate a new contract. right now prince william county is host iing a huge free hin, rein on ethg om br cancer to depression. if you would like to attend the health fair, you have a few days to do it, being held at the greater prince county community on ridgewood center drive. it's open today through thursday, 8:30 in the morning until 2:30 in the afternoon. and there's a new tool aimed to protect your kids while playing full contact sports. doctors are now performing baseline balance tests on kids who have had concussions. the idea is to make sure the kids, who have been hurt, don't start playi ining again before r brain is fully healed. >> second impact syndrome is when you have a second head injury, probably immediately following the first. brain swelling occurs and it can kill a person. >> doctors say if your child is
