11:01 am
zachary? >> reporter: yeah, barbara. a lot of moving parts here. bottom line is this. just to my right over here off of southern avenue and pennsylvania avenue, a detective was shot this morning. the story starts at about 2:45 a.m. when a burgundy nissan altima is involved in a shooting. that altima makes its way up southern avenue where they attempt a carjacking. inside that vehicle, an off-duty detective. the police chief takes over the story from there. >> the officer, who was shot, when they attempt the carjacking, he attempts to get away, tries to pull the vehicle away and they open fire on his car and start ramming the car. so there's kind of a bumping, you know, confrontation going up southern avenue until they get to bow enroad. >> reporter: the car is then seen in prince george's county before popping up again in the district. police say the men inside tried
11:02 am
to run, but one was caught near hunt place at james place. >> we have a detective who was just out of surgery. he was shot multiplmein this attempted carjacking. he is stable at this point. and we have the nissan altima in our possession right now, but we don't have all the people that were in it. >> reporter: you could feel the sense of urgency this morning as police worked the scene from the ground and the sky. >> from this point, it does not appear the detective ever had a chance to fire back. >> it impacts me because i'm a resident. >> reporter: ward 7 commissioner isn't happy, and she isn't alone. lorenzo mcdonald was prevented from catching the bus this morning. >> i think it's tragic. definitely shocked to see that happening, especially he on my corner. >> reporter: as u see, the scene is clean here. pennsylvania avenue was closed for hours this morning. the scene is clear, but the investigation continues. darcy spencer has more. >> reporter: good morning, zach.

i'm live in the 5500 block of hunt place in northeast washington, where there is still an active search for evidence in this case. if you take a look over here, this is where officers have been going through this yard. they've been looking for a weapon, possibly the weapon used in the shooting of this d.c. police officer. they've so called in the city to try to trim down some of these bushes as well as the grass here. it's very thick. but they're certainly going through here, walking through, looking through the grass, looking through the bushes and the trees, all around this property, looking for evidence connected to the shooting. let's go to some video we shot just within the last hour. you can see this set of car keys were recovered here from this area. we don't know if it's connected to this investigation, but it certainly was collected here, photographed by d.cpolice, put in a bag, and this is part of this investigation. we don't know if those were the keys that were used for this car that was used in this crime. now, let's go to some video that
