>> the man hunt for two suspects still under way. >> unfolding in the morning hours. near the maryland line. we're joined live now at police headquarters. darcy. >> thi se in saying this could have been a lot worse for this detective. here in the last couple hours we have learned the identity of the detective. we are not goioa him. d.c. police are saying they do not name victims of crime. but i'm told he is a 25 plus year veteran of the d.c. police force. a very tough person. he was shot four times and somehow he is expected to be okay. now, that officer was shot in his own car at pennsylvania and southern avenues in southeast washington. that happened very early this morning. he was off duty at the time. police says suspects in a stolen nissan at ma tried to carjack this officer. they rammed his car and shot

into it as the detective tried to get away. let's get to the next scene. this is on hunt place in northeast washington. one of the suspects was arrested right there. that is where everyone bailed out of the car. the others are still at large. we spoke to residents in the neighborhood. and they woke up when they heard all the commotion. >> grandson is in the basement. he come upstairs and waking everybody up. the police in the yard. so we come outside and find out they were searching the yard and looking for something. and we looked across the street and found that there had one suspect on the ground. >> reporter: so at last check this officer had undergone surgery earlier today. he east listed as stable at an area hospital. as i said he's expected to be okay. we are waiting for police to release additional details and there may be another briefing.

in the area. that is prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins reports. that is just o of the issues residents are dealing with. >> i'm here where authorities are still working toln all the sludge and mud left behind after amazing floods last night. these caused a lot of damage. some soft roads completely washed out. and i mean bridges disappearing in all of the flood water. folks who had bridges over creeks so they cou access their driveways, some of those driveways were destroyed. people dealing with high flood water throughout the area and a couple of rescues overnight as well. the other side to this, there was also a water main break causing low pressure for a number in the county. while they believe they have taken care of the water pressure issue, it does mean there is some contamination and people are asked to boil the water and

of the officer invoed investigats y thee withholding the officer's identity because of death threats. and for the first time we are hearing from an eye witness of the shooting. johnson was walking with brown when the police oic confronted them. he said within minutes his friend was dead. he describes what happens in his own words. >> it was around 1:40, 2:00. we are downing down the street. empty street. we was just walking down, minding our own business. we're both headed home and the officer is approaching and as he pull up on the side he didn't say freeze, halt or nothing like we were committing a crime. he said get the f on the sidewalk. and i told the officer we were not but a minute from our destination. he was at an angle we were so close to his door and him when he tries to thrust the door open aggressively it didn't come an inch out before it strikes both of us. arms extended out the window.

grabbed my friend around the neck. he didn't say step back or anything like that. he started to pull any friend into the window. so the officer is trying to pull him in and he's pulling away. he never once attempted to grab for this officer's weapon. he's still holding my friend with one arm and now with the other hand he's pointing his weapon. the second time he says "aisle shoot." it was even a second later before the gun went off and the officer let go. and that is how we were able to run at the same time. the first car i see i duck behind because i fear nor my life. i'm scared and i don't know what's going and i don't understand why this oir is shooting at us. and i'm looking and watching the officer and he's pursuing my friend and fired another shot and struck my friend the back. then my friend stopped running his hands immediately went in the air and he turned address towards the officer face the face. he started to tell the officer he was unarmed and that you should stop shooting me. before he could get his second sentence out the offer fired several more shots into his head and chest area.

the endorphins have kicked? children in sports a new survey questions how safe they may be on the playing field. this survey reveals nine out of ten young athletes say they have been injured. news4 aaron gilchrist has our story. >> reporter: no maowh you change the helmets and rules the culture also put yours kids at risk. researchers from safe kids worldwide surveyed about a thousand mostly basketball playerss between seventh and tenth grades and more than half said they will still play hurt. 32% said they tried to hide or downplay an injury so they could still play in games. the survey also talked to about a thousand coaches. 53% of them said that they were pressured by a parent to put a hurt athlete sbak backnto a game. the survey also came one a number of recommendations to solve some of these problems. first, athletes and coaches have to know and think about preventing injuries. they say teach them proper
