store. take a look. investigators say the person in the white t-shirt and red hat on the right of your screen is michael brown. the guy behind him in the black t-shirt is his friend, dorian johnson. police say brown grabbed a $49 box of cigars off the county and tried to leave the store without peaing. an employee tried to stop him, and brown shoved the man before walking out. about ten minutes later an officer spotted brown and johnson walking down the street, but the police chief says -- and this is important -- the officer did not know brown was the suspect we'll have much more in a live report coming up from ferguson. >> the officer stopped brown and johnson because they were walking down the street blocking traffic. again, the latest from ferguson coming up at 4:30. that officer, as we just heard, has been identified as darren wilson, a six-year veteran of the police department, and as we just

heard, we will have more on what's happening out there a little later in the broadcast. now it appears that -- to be an unfortunate case of mistaken identity in virginia. >> this apdz to be a tragic accident. a sheriff's deputy believing he was shooting a burglar in his home accountsly shoots and wounds his own daughter. it all happened right here in the garage of this home on willy's way outside of winchester. what we're being told is this d county sheriff's ofts, but he lives here in virginia. apparently an alarm had gone off in his hit-or-miss indicating that someone had opened his garage. now, he believed that there was

an intruder in his house. unfortunately, after that he realized that he had just shot his 16-year-old daughter. apparently she had snuck out of the house earlier and was coming back home when this happened. the deputy put his daughter in his car and headed towards the hospital. then at some point he crashed his car. she was later taken to the hospital by the fire and rescue democratic. fortunately, she is expected to be okay. she is stable at the hospital at this time. now, the deputy has been identified as easton mcdonald. he is a 13-year veteran with the loudoun county sheriff's office. we're told that he has been placed on administrative leave.

their defense. today they lost the battle in the courtroom. the judge rejected motions to acquit filed by both of their legal teams. the judge's decision doesn't really come as a surprise. it's a customary request for the defense to make once the prosecute prosecution rests its case, but it's also extremely rare for a judge to grant the motion. that means bob and maureen mcdonald will now prepare for what's ahead monday, the start of their defense. we've learned each defendant will present their witnesses separately, but we don't know whether the former governor or his wife will go first. there is no doubt the most important moment will come when bob mcdonald himself takes the stand. this is what he told me about how he views the defense case ahead. >> all i can say is i've had 38 years in public service and public life. i've given my entire professional adult life to serving the people of the wraits and the army, serb serving the

it's one of the most dangerous roads in our area, and right now new speed cameras are in operation. the new cameras are rolling on route 1 in college park near the university of maryland. they will enforce a new slower speed limit. 25 miles an hour. there have been several people hit and killed on route one in the past year while crossing the street. highway officials also put up a new fence and a pedestrian signal at route one near hartwick road. a first look at a suspect in a bizarre crime spree over the weekend. look at this surveillance video police put out late this

morning. can you see two guys walking up to the suvs on the left. police say these are two of dozens of vehicles vandalized in maryland overnight. on sunday windows were broken and tires were slashed with no apparent motive. someone's garage was also burglarized in the seam area, but police aren't sure if that's linked to these vandalism cases. >> just in time for the start of the new school year, there's a new app to help you better help your kids deal with bullying. the app was unveiled today at a bully prevention summit in southwest washington. education leaders from around the country took part. the app offers tips to prevent bullying and ways to start the conversation with your children. it also lists common warning signs of bullying. a mother and teacher from howard county tells us the app would have come in handy for her. >> when my son was in fourth and fifth grade, there was a little bit of an incident where -- and

depression. >> reporter: robin williams had been vocal about his depression. there's no way to know if his diagnosis of parkinson's played any role in his suicide. although clinic a.m. depression and parkinson's disease are two dis ekt medical conditions. suffering from both may worsen symptoms. we know there's a loss of cells in areas of the brain that make dopamine, and the link between parkinson's and depression is not stood from a pathological standpoint. however, we do know that they're clearly linked. >> linked, but it's important to note neither condition causes the other. there are effective medications to control both parkinson's disease and depression. erica edwards, nbc news. experts say newly deeg nosed parkinson's patients are not routinely screened for depression. meanwhile, usa today reports increased calls to crisis and suicide hotlines since williams' death. nbc 4 is committed to bringing awareness to depression and other mental health illnesses

police officer for six years and has had no disciplinary action taken against him. he was treated for injuries which occurred on saturday. >> while we now know the officer's name who killed the teenager, police also revealed what may have happened before the shooting. the ferguson police department released this surveillance video that indicates michael brown fits the description of a suspect in a strong armed robbery at a convenience store arks coringed to the police report. brown is seen grabbing a pack of cigars and heading to the exit where he is confronted by a clerk. >> no justice. no peace. >> reporter: releasing the name of the officer has done little to ease tensions. >> we have to do something about this. >> reporter: and the release of the surveillance video has raised more questions and angered the community. michael brown's family and attorney released a statement saying they are outraged. there is nothing based on the facts that have been placed before us that can justify the execution-style murder of their child by this police officer."

check your spice rack. mccormick and company, one of the best known names in the spice business, is recalling oregano because it might be contaminated with salmonella. the recall involves small three-quarter ounce containers of ground oregano. they were shipped to 41 states, including maryland and virginia.

salmonella bacteria can make anyone sick, but it's particularly dangerous to young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. if you have the recalled oregano on your shelf, throw it out and call the company for a refund. it's being called a monster deal. in a move to try to jolt sagging sales coca-cola has bought a 17% stake in monster energy drinks. the deal will cost more than $2 billion. monster along with many energy drink makers have fausd a lot of controversy over the high levels of stimulating ingredients, including caffeine in their products. the food and drug administration has investigative reports of some deaths that are lirnked to energy drinks, but the fda says there's no proof of a direct connection. the f you drive a honda, be careful. the honested ka accord and civic are the first and second most stolen cars in america. that's according to the national insurance crime bureau. why honda? well, we're told of the strong demand for the car parts.

flames on interstate 65. nearby construction equipment also caught fire and it took firefighters several hours to get it under control. well, this is reminiscent of the sean taylor case. you remember that? a group of teens break into a professional athlete's house in south florida thinking no one was home. well, we know what happened in the taylor case, which ended in tragedy, but these teens didn't make it up the stairs before someone inside yelled out. laura rodriguez has our report. >> reporter: at home with her kids and without her husband, shannon walker-allen woke up at 2:30 in the morning to the sound of something unexpected. >> she heard people walking up the stairs, and that's when she yelled out to them what are you doing in my house? as soon as they heard that they fled the house. >> reporter: authorities caught up with the intruders who said they entered the house through an unlocked door. the 18-year-olds to 19-year-olds were taken to police headquarters for questioning. >> they did enter the home.

they were there to see where ray allen had lived. they honestly thought that he had moved from the house. >> reporter: but allen hasn't moved anywhere. police say there was no intent on behalf of the teens to go in and steal anything. now the allens must directly file what the state attorney's office, if they want to charge them, with trespassing. >> she is terrified to know the fact that somebody was in her house uninvited at 2:30 in the morning. >> reporter: as for the seven teens who thought it was a good idea to enter an nba star's home in the middle of the night, police say they're remorseful. >> they were crying. they were terrified. as far as they knew, they were going to jail today. >> the teens had been at a party near the allen's home. they were caught because they told their parents what had happened, and their parents actually drove them straight to the police station. now at 5:00 tonight neighbors react to a horrible case of mistaken identity as a sheriff's deputy shoots his own daughter in northern virginia.

>> brand new developments in ferguson. just minutes ago fresh criticism of police and what friends of michael brown's family calls character assassination. a deadly accident on one of washington's busiest artery roadways. a woman on a moped run down, and a witness tells news 4 the truck was going the wrong way. first at 5:00 tonight, to the sheriff's deputy in virginia who mistakenly shot and wounded his own daughter. >> investigators suggest teenage rebellion and mistaken identity both played roles in the shooting. it remains the talk of the community in frederick county ju outside of winchester. news 4's darcy spencer has more from outside the deputy's house. >> reporter: the shooting happened inside this garage. a sheriff's deputy is getting ready for work. his security alarm goes off. he believes someone has broken in. he grabs his gun. he sees someone in the garage heading toward him, and shoots. but it's not an intruder. it's his own teenage daughter.

>> it's hard to know or be able to explain what he is actually dealing with now. i know it's got to be hard. it's got to be rough. >> reporter: authorities say after he fired, the deputy then realized he just shot his 16-year-old daughter. she was coming home at 3:45 a.m. after sneaking out of the house earlier that morning. the deputy called 911, reported the shooting, then crashed his suv while rushing his daughter to the hospital just a few miles away. can you only imagine how desperate this officer was to get his daughter to the hospital. we're told he ran off the road and hit this pillar. that caused this brick wall here to crumble. >> reporter: news 4 obtained these photos showing the deputy's suv after the violent crash. the fire and rescue department then took the teen to the hospital. the high school student is expected to make a full recovery. >> as a mom of teenagers, this kind of story scares me. >> it
