grandfather and great grandmother of a 3-year-old child who died after being taken by her father started op the street with that man shooting the child's maternal relative and high-speed chase. it was a world away from what anybody would have imagined or wanted. the suspect apparently according to police shot at police and police shot back. the suspect and this 3-year-old daughter died. the investigation into whether police knew that child was in the car is just beginning. >> i can't say that they knew or didn't is know that the young girl you inside the car. >> and, of course, we're only referrings to these people as pro nouns or designations by police at this point. you have to believe there are names and stories and people behind those pro nouns. folks in the neighborhood are on the way to the hospital. we talked to a couple on the way to the hospital to seat folks shot here. church not far away, a member came by and said we'll say a pressure for those folks and we

don't have a suspect. state highway patrol officers said while responding to the shooting scene, protesters refused to leave. officers began firing the tear gas into the crowds. the victim was taken to the hospital by other protesters and that's because ambulances could not get to the scene. now in a press conference this morning the state highway patrol captain justified the use of force. seven people were arrested for not obeying that midnight curfew. this is new, federal investigators did not want to release that video of brown allegedly robbing a liquor store before he was killed. according to a law enforcement source, the justice department reportedly prevented its release on thursday. however, the local police insisted and released the video to the public on friday. sources say federal investigators had a copy of the tape, but they had no intentions of sharing it. the fear was more violence in what's already a volatile situation. s pasters and preachers from across the country are in ferguson today trying to bring peace back to the community.

local pastor reverend alvin herring is traveling to missouri part of a national campaign of faith leaders who work with communities where violence has occurred. ferguson their goal is to use faith-based community activism to help start the healing process. they will also work on underlying issues of mistrust between the community and police. reverend herring says they will be there as long as they are needed. coming up in ten minutes, the situation in ferguson, missouri, will be the big topic on "meet the press." baltimore's mayor stephanie rollings blake will be on the round table this morning talking about her city's new curfew. guest moderator andrea mitchell will speak with missouri state governor jay nixon about the state of emergency in his state. you can see "meet the press" right after "news 4 today." starting tomorrow, the defense will make its case in the corruption trial of former virginia governor bob mcdonnell. we expect plenty more developments even as bomb shells

have dropped. mcdonnell and his wife facing 14 counts of corruption, 12 jurors including new alternates will choose their fate. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey tells us it could come down to two star witnesses including the former governor himself. >> good morning. >> reporter: criminal defendants usually dodge cameras. but not former virginia governor bob mcdonnell. for 15 trial days he's walked into a swarm of reporters and photographers on the way in and out of court. always a -- >> good morning, everybody. >> reporter: and then a few words. >> we're looking forward to continuing to have the truth come out. >> reporter: as the defense prepares to call its witnesses, mcdonnell has a little more to say. >> obviously this is crushing to be a defendant in a criminal case, but i know in my heart what the truth is and we look forward to having our case. >> reporter: the prosecution's three weeks delivered 45 witnesses and hundreds of documents all tied together with a flashy color coded chart.

but some legal analysts and court room observers say in the end it may come down to who the jury believes. star prosecution witness and gift giver jonnie williams or bob mcdonnell. >> his credibility, his ability to articulate reasons for his actions or inactions will be outcome dermtive in all likelihood. >> i don't think anyone believes johnnie has overriding credibility. >> reporter: i asked the governor about his credibility versus williams. >> how prepared and eager are you to testify? this may come down to your word against jonnie williams? >> well i can't comment on anything about the case other than i've -- i always try to tell t truth about everything now in public life and what i'm going to do when i take the stand. >> reporter: former governor and first lady will each present their own defense. jurors got this day off as the hearing was held on the motion to acquit but they'll be back in court 9:45 monday morning when we'll find out who will present

>> reporter: sometimes sharks get a bad rap. most want to stay away from them for good reason. researchers here at the marine lab say sharks could potentially save millions of lives. the fish may hold the secret to curing cancer. dr. lure is one of america's foremost leaders in this subject. he says it's long been known that sharks rarely get sick. >> sharks have a low incidence of disease in general and what's interesting is they have a low incidence of cancer. >> reporter: he says the fish have incredibly powerful immune systems. >> we've tried to give them cancer and have not been able to do that. >> reporter: he removed cells from the immune system of a bonnet head shark and took it to a lab. he learned it secreted a compound that blocked the growth of human cancer cells. >> we want to be able to get to the point where we understand what the compounds are so we can move into animal studies. >> reporter: he wants to replicate these in a lab so future researchers won't have to

we are looking at the week ahead and same-sex couples in virginia will be able to get legally married. news 4's northern virginia reporter david cull ver takes a closer look at the legal fight that struck down the commonwealth's stand. >> love changes the world. >> reporter: the fight against virginia's ban on same-sex marriages has moved quickly. in february we were in norfolk for the first round. the u.s. district court striking it down. the defense took it to the next level, fourth circuit court of appeals. two weeks ago the judges declared the ban illegal and decided not to impose a stay meaning gay marriage could possibly be allowed as soon as next week. >> giving me direction. >> giving your directions. >> reporter: it could mean the out of state marriages of couples like pastor danny spear and richard lovestran will be recognized. >> it gives you that extra -- i am not sure how to describe it -- the extra feeling of being equal or feeling your relationship is, you know, on par with other folks at least as far as the

state is concerned. >> reporter: pastor danny says he's performed about a dozen same-sex marriage ceremonies but each time he's had to leave the commonwealth to perform them. >> that means my parishioners here in northern virginia no longer have to go to maryland or into d.c. or to delaware in order to be legal -- have their marriages legally recognized in their home state. >> these judges are creating mass confusion saying two guys can get married or two women can get married. >> reporter: delegate bob marshal sees the federal court's decision as harmful, allowing the ban to expire next week, will bring untold damage to virginia. >> as a matter of fact, they don't tell you what marriage is. that's how stupid this is. for them to just run, you know, fall all over themselves to be first in line, is a disservice to the constitution of the united states and commonwealth of virginia. david cullver news 4. virginia will be required to

66% relative humidity. dew points in the mid 60s when it starts to get awfully sticky out there and the humidity is going to continue to climb for the remainder of today and this whole week ahead even though there are no 90s on the seven-day forecast, it's going to feel like 90 degrees at least once or twice this week. it's already 79 degrees in leesburg and frederick and winchester, 78 in martingsburma a little cooler to the south because there's a lot more cloud cover and light rain showers towards fredericksburg and southern maryland. rain chances today are best actually across northern maryland but everybody has a chance for getting wet today. here's the proof on storm team 4 radar. light little sprinkles now going over the woodrow wilson bridge headed for andrews air force base. that's the runways right there, joint base andrews i should say. few showers near mount vernon. more on i-95 to the west of the woodbridge area. couple drops on the marine corps base at quantico and more rain

towards fredericksburg northern neck and the rain showers will be progressing into southern maryland. st. mary's county, charles county, on the lookout, this is not heavy rain and no threat for severe weather today of any kind. nonetheless the 10 to 15 minute long rain showers will get you wet and interrupt your day previously. the weather front is still well up here across pennsylvania as it slides ever so slowly down, that's the reason the best chance for rain today is actually in northern maryland. with plenty of humidity and daytime heating there will be a chance anyway for showers everywhere. i've changed our future weather model here to our super high resolution one. as a result, it tends to pick up these hit and miss showers a little bit better. by 3:00, little rain chance there just south of town but notice how the little green blotches everywhere you can't say any one place is more or less likely to get a drop. showers maybe a rumble of thunder north of fredericksburg by 7:00 this evening and by 10:00, 11:00, things are settling back down. we should be cloudy overnight.
