right now at 11:00, tensions flare in ferguson, missouri. this was the scene within the past hour as police tried to push protesters out of the area.

here is a live look at the scene right now. we will bring you an update within minutes. shocking new details about the local family involved in a deadly police shootout. is it part of a bigger problem in one community? off the top at 11:00, a local family rocked by tragedy. a father dies after a shootout with police. now they believe he shot his 3-year-old daughter and the relatives who were trying to protect her. news 4's darcy spencer is live. was this family trying to do anything they could to try to keep this little girl safe? >> reporter: chris, that's absolutely right. it's very quiet here in this fort washington neighborhood tonight. this is the house where the tragedy unfolded yesterday afternoon. it was no secret to neighbors that there were ongoing domestic

problems. this family did take actions to try to stay safe. the floodlights turn on when anyone comes near the place. security cameras keep watch over the property. this family did what it could to protect itself from frederick miller, but it wasn't enough. anet is a neighbor. >> from what i understand, he used to come over and vandalize the mother of his child's vehicle and sometimes would vandalize the house as well. >> reporter: police say miller shot and critically wounded his 3-year-old daughter's maternal great grandmother and grandfather here saturday afternoon. then he took off with his little girl. they would both end up dead within hours. >> i was absolutely shocked. i was shocked. i was mortified. >> reporter: miller was killed in his car during a gun battle with police on branch avenue in temple hills after abducting his daughter. police say he had shot and

stabbed his little girl. online court information shows miller had been involved in a fight over custody. he was charged with malicious destruction of property. in all of those cases, he was found not guilty. the little girl is the 13th victim to die in a domestic-related killing in this county so far this year. >> sometimes they can't speak out because they're afraid to leave their home, their children, their husband. >> sometimes it's hard for the police to investigate because people don't want to talk. on the flip side, person get arrested, i don't think the punishment is stiff enough. >> reporter: the state's attorney here plans to hold a press conference right here in this neighborhood tomorrow morning. she is calling for family unity and an end to this domestic violence.

live for fort washington, darcy spencer, news 4. >> thanks. the police will also give an update tomorrow. they have had a huge increase in domestic violence cases. two years ago, a man allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife and another woman inside a home, then turned the gun on himself. one week ago tonight, another 3-year-old girl was shot and killed in landover. she was the unintended target during a fight between two men. her killer is still out there. that same day, police say a man shot and killed his girlfriend in their home. he turned himself in the next day. back to our breaking story in missouri. live now to ferguson. we have been looking at these pictures for the past 40 minutes. police in armored vehicles and riot gear throwing tear gas into the crowd and forcing demonstrators to run. they handcuffed at least one person. some protesters are refusing to

leave. the new curfew in ferguson was not supposed to go into at hour. police felt it was necessary to clear the area before that. it's been more than a week since michael brown was shot by a police officer. but tensions seem to be going up, not down. jay gray is in ferguson with the latest. >> reporter: as the sun fades in ferguson, police and protesters return to the streets of this troubled city. a midnight curfew is still in place here, along with concern that when it comes, there could be trouble again. >> this is the police department. you are violating the state imposed curfew. >> reporter: last night the first the curfew was in place, most of the protesters cleared. 100 or so refused to leave. challenging the order and the officers on the ground. >> we have the right to assemble peacefully. >> reporter: armored vehicles and tactical officers moved in firing smoke canisters, then

tear gas. a response to armed men on a roof top and in the street. investigators say a protester was hit by gunfire and several shots were fired at a squad car. >> i think that was the proper response. >> reporter: the response from the community sunday came from hundreds gathered for a rally to honor michael brown at a local church. >> he was not a suspect. he was not an object. he was not an animal. but that's how he was killed. >> reporter: his memory now at the center of this community's unwavering support. >> these parents are not going to cry alone, they're not going to stand alone, they're not going to fight alone. we have had enough! >> reporter: a message that they deliver every day and night since brown's death.

jay gray, nbc news, ferguson, missouri. >> the crisis has a lot of people asking, is it ever okay for police to use military-style equipment on american protesters? baltimore's mayor says, no. on "meet the press" she spoke about the danger of using that type of equipment during demonstrations here at home. >> there's a sacred bond that the police have with the community. when it's broken, it has ripple affects. that community and across the country. people don't want their military equipment being used on them when they are just voicing their opinions. >> we will keep watching what happens in ferguson tonight and continue our coverage on the death of michael brown. follow news4 and tune in tomorrow morning. we will tell what you happened throughout the night. back here at home, a dead man's body was discovered steps away from two local schools.

now police say that man was stabbed to death. someone called police this morning after they found a body near a dumpster on nichol lane. that's a block away from an elementary school and a high school. investigators have not identified tidentify ed. this is the city's first homicide the year. the president is headed back to d.c. he is taking a break from his summer vacation. tomorrow the president will meet with biden and other advisers to discuss several pressing issues, including the violence in missouri. it's a brief trip. he will go back to vacationing on tuesday to see his family. again, there are several big issues that are developing by the hour, including the u.s. military operation in iraq. right now that mission is to help kurdish fighters recapture the country's largest dam. u.s. air strikes have helped those troops retake at least part of the dam. the roadside bombs have slowed some of the progress on the

a couple is accused of kidnapping two amish sisters and sexually abusing them. as detectives collected evidence sunday, prosecutors revealed they are ready to add to the charges. investigators say this was a crime of opportunity. they didn't know the girls who are 7 and 12 years old. a criminal complaint reveals they spotted the sisters wednesday and kidnapped them at a vegetable stand. 24 hours later, the sisters were set free and found about 15 miles from where they disappeared. it's considered one of the corner stones of college football. tonight, notre dame is under intense scrutiny. some of the players have been sidelined for what they have allegedly done off the field. one has a connection to washington. >> reporter: a bombshell on the notre dame campus. the school announcing four members of its highly-regarded football team are being investigated for academic dishon

turns out pokemon wasn't just a fad. thousands are out there playing the game today. they battled it out here in d.c. world championships. who knew there was such a thing. it was held this weekend at the washington convention center. 2,000 fans from 30 different countries faced off in car and video game tournaments. it wasn't just kids. the oldest gamer was 66 years
