new tonight the latest incident that left a mother of two dead in her home. >> and our football team put its offense on display. the team is making headlines off the field. two well known broadcasters taking a stand on the team name. >> announcer: news 4 at 11:00 starts now. >> we begin with a look at the streets of ferguson, missouri. we have seen hundreds of people marching and gathering along this road through the heart of town. so far, a much calmer protest over the shooting death of teenager michael brown. good evening. i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gensler. we have seen a lot of developments in ferguson. county police set up a designated protest zone on the street where we have seen so many clashes over the past week. a photographer was arrested while taking pictures of tonight's protest. he was just released a few minutes ago.

>> this is the first night that missouri's national guard has been in control of the protest zone. so far we have not seen any teargas fired or major clashes with the protesters. jay gray has delayed us now from ferguson. >> as the protest continues tonight in ferguson, the strategy of police and the responsiveness has changed dramatically. >> tonight we'll ensure the safety of the citizens of ferguson. visitors to ferguson. >> reporter: there will be no curfew. police will try to keep the protest moving not giving crowds a chance to congregate. for the first time now officers can be seen from the rooftops here. the national guard has been called in. their mission according to gover nor jay nixon to provide protection and ensure the safety of the unified command center which was the target of a

coordinated attack. >> that will free up law enforcement resources to protect the peaceful protesters. the citizens of ferguson and their property. >> as so many continue the to march to honor the memory of brown and push for answers in the investigation. today brown's family released results from an autopsy they commissioned performed by veteran pathologist dr. michael baden. >> six bullets struck. two may have reentered. three bullets were recovered at the first autopsy. >> reporter: the brown family and witness withes said the unarmed teenager died while trying to surrender while police contend brown arrested the offic -- assaulted the officer that day. it is a source of contention and controversy here. >> there continues to be pressure including a push to speed up the investigation here. tonight nbc news could be

presenting evidence to a grand jury. sometime later this week. i'm jay gray. >> are you able at all from your position to assess the size of the crowds of protesters? how many folks are out there on the street? >> you know, i went through before i got to the command center. i would say a couple hundred at this point. tends to pick up throughout the night. we may have more there at this point. again, they are not letting people assemble tonight. they are keeping them moving. they don't want people to congregate. so far it looks like that's a strat aegy that's working. >> thanks, jay. also, trayvon martin's mother wrote an op-ed for time magazine to the family of oh michael brown. she offered prayers and frustrations over the death and similarities to the death of her son. she also promises to seek

under a flood warn withing. we'll have more on what we can expect as far as the rain is concerned tomorrow and during the day on tuesday. >> new at 11:00 we have learned the name of a woman found dead inside her house in landover, maryland, this morning. chantal lewis was 36. police call the death a homicide. darcy spencer is on the scene just blocks away from another murder this that community. >> well, the victim here was the mother of two young boys. we are told her mom came here with the boys this morning when they weren't able to reach her. they walked into the house and made the horrible discovery. police dusted here for fingerprints on the front door. still tonight the killer is still on the loose. janice lives ethics door to the woman found murdered in her home this morning. the discovery made when her young boys returned home with

their grandmother. >> she has her two sons. my heart sinks for them. they saw her in that condition. >> neighbors say lewis moved here on west forest drive months ago. police aren't saying exactly how she died. but she had trauma to her body. >> preliminarily ther doesn't appear to be a sign of forced entry. >> reporter: lewis had taken two men to court to get child support for her boys. one case was closed. the other still open. she had a boyfriend. the house is around the corner from another home where are a 3-year-old girl was shot to death last week t. suspect was involved in a fight with another man. he shot up the house and killed the girl playing upstairs. the alleged shooter is still on the run. >> people have no regard for life anymore.

people feel like they can take it. they have the control to take it. >> at this point, police haven't released information about a possible motive or a possible suspect in this case. darcy spencer, news 4. >> thank you, darcy. this might be the last known picture of a father and the daughter he's accused of killing. frederick miller shot and stabbed his 3-year-old daughter over the weekend. it is believed he shot the child's grandfather and great grandmother. miller died in a shootout with police. today, community leaders rallied in the neighborhood where it started. demanding an end to domestic violence. >> this is not an issue that the criminal justice system can resolve. no matter how much protection we offer for the victims until we fix our families, the violence will persist. >> as a father i can only

imagine the pain one must feel with the loss of a son or daughter. it is imperative we bond together and protect our children from this kind of violence. >> tonight a gas station was the site of a somber ceremony. in tribute to raj kumar, the station clerk murdered there nearly two weeks ago. police are trying to find the masked men who opened fire on kumar. it happened in maryland. that guy then raided the cash register. the fbi and police are offering a $27,000 reward for information that leads to arrest and indictment. >> the clock is ticking. gay and lesbian couples could start getting married in virginia on thursday morning. plaintiffs in the case filed a brief with the supreme court today asking it not delay same sex weddings in the commonwealth. some virginia counties are asking for a stay of an ape lat

court ruling that called the gay marriage ban unconstitutional. the supreme court can now decide whether to put p weddings on hold while it considers hearing the case in the next term. >> in the corruption trial of the former first couple of virginia there was harsh testimony on the behavior of maureen mcdonnell behind closed doors. cabinet secretary janet kelly described bob mcdonnell as honest and said she was never asked to do favors for johnny williams. she described mrs. mcdonnell as difficult, demands, and di diva-like. hk dodge's lawyers are trying to separate his behavior from that of his wife in the eyes of the jury. >> they said the staff thought she was mentally ill. they are doing it with her in the courtroom. not only throwing her under the bus, but backing it up a few times. >> the defense continues its case tomorrow. fellow northern virginia bureau chief -- you can follow julie

carey on twitter for updates from the courtroom. she'll have live reports on news 4. >> students will be returning to the university of maryland this week. when they do, they will find it harder to cross route one without using a crosswalk. tonight there are just cones. soon lining the center of the street to keep people from cutting across the busy road where there isn't a crosswalk. three people died trying to cross route one in college park this year. the speed limit on the road has been lowered and new pedestrian signals installed. >> traffic headaches will get a will the worse on some of the roads in d.c. the department of transportation says work will begin in the fall to replace the aging 116th stret bridge. it means parts of the bridge and military road could be shut down for weeks. they plan to work in stages so not all the lanes are closed at one time.

9-year-old cindy espi noza was last seen 7:20 tonight in marl boro pike in capitol heights near the d.c. maryland line. she's described as 4'10", 75 pounds. she was last seen wearing a baby blue t-shirt and blue shorts. if you have seen cindy, call prince georges county police right away. >> this time next year washington could be getting ready for a visit from pope francis. the pope hopes to make an east coast trip to the u.s. next fall. he mentioned possible stops in d.c., philadelphia, and new york. earlier this year house speaker john boehner invited the pope to address the joint session of congress. no pope has addressed from the capitol. we reached out to the archdiocese tonight. there was no comment but officials said they would joyfully welcome a visit from the pope.

>> there is a new effort to make sure airport security officers across the country recognize d.c. driver's license as a valid state i.d. we told you about several travellers wrongly told to show a passport because a d.c. license isn't a valid form of i.d. delegate norton met with officials from the tsa who make sure all three license styles are part of the diely briefings and train document checkers to recognize them. >> this is not a bad night out there. apparently a hundred miles south, not even that farther catching the blues. >> they are. this is stafford countiment only one area seeing the heavy rain. we have flood warnings associated with the rain. we told you the rain would stay away from are the redskins game. that was good news. temperatures today into the mid 80s. they continue to be on the mild side the this evening. plenty of cloud cover.

tonight or tomorrow morning you may run into shower activity. that will be the case through tomorrow and probably the next couple of days. here's what's going on. one storm system around the region. notice the clouds from virginia and maryland down to the south. more cloudiness back to the west. this next system will move over the region and continue out of the atlantic. we'll continue to see a moist atmosphere meaning cloud cover and a chance for rainshowers as well. tomorrow, notice where the best chance of rain is. once again to the south. around the same area around quantico, fredricksburg to extreme southern maryland. if you are in this region you want to watch out tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon it shifts. d.c. might be dry most of the day with showers to the west. most should be on the lighter side. that's the best news. can't rule out being on the heavier side. by wednesday clearing. everybody is on the dry side wednesday afternoon with the
