once again in the streets of ferguson, missouri, overnight as the national guard tries to regain order. breaking news on the road. a deadly overnight accident leaving a prince george's street closed this morning. the impact the crash is having on your morning commute. >> we're tracking chances you'll deal with rain in the hours ahead. >> storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is here with if you should grab that umbrella before you head out to work. hey, chuck. >> good morning. you may want to have the umbrella. know where it is. it's not raining outside now and the commute into work and school will be dry. we'll have hit and miss shower chances to contend with. a nice morning outside. 69 degrees in rockville and 74 now in washington. nothing but ground clutter on the radar first thing this morning. a couple showers over the lower parts of the bay is it for early morning rain chances. tuesday planner, 74 now. staying in the 70s through 8:00 this morning. mid 80s for a high this afternoon. then back to upper 70s by 7:00,

8:00 this evening. for today, mitt and miss rain chances. rain chances at 30% today. today's high, 85. rain chances back by thursday and friday. ten minutes from now it's amelia segal in kingstowne, virginia, but now it's melissa mollet with traffic. >> good morning, chuck. nice to see you again this morning in the 6:00 hour. taking a look at the map here, our first slowdowns of the morning. we're looking here at d.c. 295 past 50 southbound slow as we widen out here a little bit looking pretty good otherwise around the beltway. into and out of town on all of the major routes, 66 at gallows road is looking good. one thing to warn you about in brandywine. a police investigation shut down floral park road closed between dobson and south springfield road. megan mcgrath is on the scene. we'll hear from her in about two

minutes. that breaking news another night of violence rocking the streets of ferguson, missouri. protesters shot at police officers and officers fired tear gas at a group throwing molotov cocktails. >> a new call this morning for protesters to demonstrate during daylight hours. we just heard that from highway patrol a few hours ago after another night of this violence. officers say they did come under heavy gunfire and they had to fire off tear gas and stun grenades once again blaming a small group of trouble makers. two people in this crowd shot. not by police but by others. 31 arrested so far including three journalists who were detained. now guns and a molotov cocktail taken by officers from the crowd. captain ron johnson speaking out urging the protesters to rally

during the day to prevent criminals from hiding or blending in. >> for anyone who has been at these protests understands that there is a dangerous dynamic in the night. >> some officers were hit by bottles but they only suffered minor injuries. no shots fired from an officer's gun in the night. journalists who were caught up in that chaos were later released. that's the latest from the live desk. back to you. now to breaking news in prince george's county. melissa mollet just told you about the deadly accident on a road in brandywine. megan mcgrath is joining us live from the scene. it's hard to get around, you saw that firsthand. >> reporter: yeah, it is hard to get around. this is a rural road not a lot of work arounds here. if you're in the brandywine area and you take floral park road, keep in mind you may have difficulty this morning. if you look behind me here just within the last few minutes, a

flat bed tow truck arrive on the scene so we may get movement in terms of moving this car out of the roadway. for the time being, floral park road in brandywine is closed in both directions between dobson road and south springfield road. a fatal accident. driver of this car lost control and left the roadway and went into the trees. the driver was thrown and killed. i'm told by investigators that speed may have been a factor in this deadly crash. for the time being, the road is closed. looks like we may start to see things improving here but at least for the next hour or so you're going to want to think about a work around if you normally take floral park road in the brandywine area. back to you in the studio. >> megan, thank you. 6:04 your time now. silver alert. police looking for an elderly man who has dementia. this is 83-year-old william edward harkens jr. he was last seen near bell crest

road by the mall at prince georges. he was wearing a light tan shirt, blue jeans and brown sandals. if you have information, please call police. bob mcdonnell will be on the stand to testify in his own defense against charges of corruption. mcdonnell's wife is also facing those charges. she won't take the stand and has faced harsh testimony so far. in opening day of defense, one witness said mrs. mcdonnell was difficult, demanding and diva-like. it's about that time to get your kids ready for their first day of school. thousands of students head back to class at calvert county public schools. >> this is the first school system in maryland t opo this school year. the system welcomes a new superintendent, dr. daniel curry will a lead the school system. he previously led a district in delaware. a reminder for you. maryland is requiring new vaccinations for students into kindergarten and those going

into seventh grade. right now johnny manziel is trending on twitter in our area. he gave the middle finger to the redskins bench last night. manziel did it after an incomplete pass in the third quarter. redskins players talked about it after the game. >> just got a lot of growing up to do and so do i. so i hope he learned from this game and hope he has a great season. >> i felt like i did a good job of holding my composure throughout the night and you have a lapse of judgment and slip up. >> and manziel also said it wasn't a positive thing to do especially when there are so many cameras around and also not to mention so many kids around too and people watching. a lot of people look up to him as a role model. >> people call him a sore loser and not a great way to get started for your first professional football game. >> it wasn't a real game. season is just getting started.

welcome back. a new study says your level of education affects the way you exercise. this coming out of the university of kansas. researchers say if you have a college degree, you are more likely to be active on weekends.

6:16. we continue to follow breaking news in ferguson, missouri, this morning. things look calm right now you can see from the live picture here on the ground in ferguson. that was not the case a few hours ago. police and protesters clashed again. police say that protesters threw molotov cocktails and some fired shots at officers. they fired tear gas and flash grenades into the crowds. two people were shot. not by police but by others.

32 people arrested overnight and police ask protesters to hold peaceful demonstrations during the day. the group is upset with officers in the shooting death of michael brown. he died ten days ago. a preliminary autopsy, a private one, says the unarmed man was shot six times including twice in the head. if you pick up "time" magazine, you'll see a tribute to michael brown written by trayvon martin's mother. an op-ed to his family was written. they should advocate for change and wrote "i hate that you must join this exclusive yet growing group of parents and relatives who have lost loved ones to senseless gun violence." >> police are looking for suspects in the death of a mother in landover. shauntelle lewis was found dead on west forest drive in her home. her mother and two sons made that discovery monday morning. prince george's county police are not saying how lewis died only that she had trauma to the body. neighbors say lewis did have a boyfriend but at this point

police do not have a possible motive or suspects in the case. the community in hand ovove does not want anyone to forget the man killed a week ago when a man in a mask walked into the station and started shooting. the fbi and police are offering more than $25,000 reward to find and indict that man. things could be safer soon along route 1 in college park, maryland. a median fence will replace these orange cones along the road near the university of maryland campus. the fence will line the center of the street to try to keep people from cutting across that busy road where there's no crosswalk. the speed limit on that road has been dropped and new pedestrian signals installed. three people died trying to cross that road this year. corcoran gallery of art will merge with two larger institutions allowing the

1944. he introduced lineups for nearly four decades. pardo was 96 years old. voters in alaska may be doing a little bit of a double take today. you can vote for -- they can vote for dan sullivan not once but twice and balance of power in the u.s. senate may rest on that ballot. the dan sullivan running for lieutenant governor is a shoe in. that's not the case for the candidate running for senate against current democratic senator. voters say that their campaign signs have been especially confusing. >> i bet. >> hopefully they'll work it out in the booth. use a middle initial or something. >> maybe put their picture in there. that would help. >> interesting to see how that turns out. if you love "farris buhler's day off" you probably remember the scene where the car was taken for a joy drive. >> an option of valley mode.

the presence of national guard troops doing little to quell the violence in the streets of ferguson, missouri, overnight. while you were sleeping, police arrested dozens of people including three journalists. coming up in just minutes, we'll

go live to ferguson for a look at the conditions in that town this morning. first, bracing for another day of summer weather. temperatures already in the 70s and it's a little humid out there. >> storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell tracking the chances those conditions could bring rain to your neighborhood. chuck, what are you seeing? >> one thing, someone is going to get rained on today. that's for sure. the trick in the forecast is not everyone is going to get rained on. i think the majority of us will be rain free today. rain chances remain. so just sort of keep that in mind as you plan your day today. have the umbrella handy or know where one is. take your office mate's in case it's raining when you leave. it's dry on the way into work this morning. upper 60s shenandoah valley. low 70s around metro area. back to school calvert county joining the list. 66 to 70 degrees at the bus stop this morning. sun just came up five minutes ago at 6:25. umbrellas not required but not a bad idea either. hour by hour temperatures today,

but nothing major. 45 miles per hour headed into town on 66 as you head through fairfax. taking a look up on 270, this actually just turned red as we came out here. we'll figure out what's going on there. a little bit slow at 20 miles per hour. as you head out of frederick and down south again, crash 95 northbound at prince william parkway. going to try to get chopper 4 over that for you. back in a couple minutes. >> we are following an unfolding scene out of north jersey. these are live pictures from a chopper camera. there's a truck that's hanging over an overpass. as the camera moves in and out, you'll see the truck. there you see on your television screen emergency crews working on one injured person. just a short while ago we saw them hosing this man down. he didn't have on a lot of clothing. we're not exactly sure what

they're dealing with whether this is a hazmat situation. there's a truck hanging over this overpass. this is happening in new jersey. this is in north jersey, folks. we're staying on top of this breaking story out of that area and as soon as we get more information, we'll bring it right to you. back to you now. >> all right. thank you. it's 6:33. the u.s. supreme court could weigh in on the battle for gay rights in virginia. gay and lesbian couples could start getting married in virginia thursday morning. plaintiffs in the case filed a brief with the supreme court yesterday asking that it not delay same-sex weddings in the commonwealth. some virginia counties are asking for a stay of an appellate court ruling that struck down virginia's ban on same-sex marriage. the supreme court can now decide whether to put weddings on hold while it considers hearing the case in its next term. today you can fly on frontier airlines from dulles airport. the low-cost carrier is launching service to 17 locations. it will announce an 18th route

later this morning. the airline says it will be a sunny international spot. things should get easier the next time you try to use your d.c. license to get through airport security. some travelers were told it wasn't a valid i.d. recently. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes-norton met with officials from the tsa. new numbers say summer has been stagnant for jobs in our area. unemployment did not grow or shrink by a major amount according to the labor department. these numbers have come from july. d.c. added 400 jobs. virginia across the whole state added 14,000. and in maryland, unemployment actually went up as the state lost 9,000 jobs. the district is asking for more time after a federal judge ruled that d.c.'s ban on carrying guns in public is unconstitutional. "the washington post" reports the district attorney general

filed a brief asking for an extension so d.c. council could decide on whether to enact a new gun law. the judge's ruling would allow anyone with a permit to openly carry their gun in the district. it's supposed to take effect on october 22nd. we're following this breaking news this morning. police and protesters squaring off again in the streets of ferguson, missouri. confrontations that turned violent quickly. protesters shot at police officers. officers fired tear gas at a group throwing molotov cocktails. nbc's jay gray has been in ferguson since the violence started there more than a week ago. he's joining us live with the latest on developments overnight. jay, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, aaron. it was another night of chaos here. all unfolding worst of it around midnight when the curfew would have been in effect but again that hasn't really seemed to affected anything out here.

there is violence on the nights when there was a curfew here. it started again with a clash between protesters and police. it's a vicious cycle. tear gas was fired. smoke canisters were fired. 31 people arrested last night. two people injured by gunfire. protesters injured by gunfire from others in the crowd. two buildings set on fire. one of those a business in the area. police took on a lot of gunfire last night. rocks were thrown at them. bottles were thrown at them. they added the national guard here but still haven't managed to end the violence and what the man in charge of security down here, captain ron johnson from highway patrol, he rather see protesters get out during the daylight hours so the criminal element won't be able to hide behind their message and darkness of night. that's the latest in ferguson,

jay gray, back to you. >> has there been any movement or any progress being made on the investigation side of this whether some legal action might be in the near future? >> reporter: that's a great question. there's been a lot of pressure and even pressing from the governor to get this investigation moving more quickly. a lot of people think that will help to quell some of the violence here. nbc news has learned that prosecutors may in fact begin to present evidence to a grand jury as early as this week. that would be really an advancing move. initially they said two weeks to a month before that would happen. that would be some good news if they could get that going and again it could happen as early as this week. >> all right. jay gray live for us in ferguson, missouri. thank you. a lot of people reacting to this. redskins players walking out of the tunnel in last night's preseason game. several putting their hands up into the air. this is a sign of surrender as a

breaking news on the roads right now at 6:47. deadly accident overnight has the streets shut down at this hour in prince george's county. >> one of the stories our team is working on to get you up to the minute. we want to begin with megan mcgrath live in brandywine. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning. our first good look at the vehicle involved in this deadly crash. they just pulled it out of the woods and you can see that it's up on the flat bed tow truck there. it's a large white van. they are about to take it away from the scene. when they do that and remove branchs from the roadway, they'll open things back up. for the time being, floral park road in brandywine is closed. overnight there was a deadly accident involving this van. police say the driver lost

shots at police officers. that is when they fired tear gas and flash grenades into the crowd. at least two people were shot in some of the crowds that were there last night. 31 people were arrested overnight as well. police are asking protesters now -- those who want to hold peaceful demonstrations to do that during daylight hours. a missouri grand jury could hear evidence in the michael brown case as early as tomorrow. that grand jury will determine whether a ferguson police officer, darren wilson, will face criminal charges for the 9th of august shooting. a silver alert right now. police in hyattsville are looking for an elderly man with dementia. this is 83-year-old william edward harkens jr. disappearing yesterday afternoon. last seen near bell crest road around the kaiser building. he was wearing a light tan shirt, blue jeans and brown sandals. if you have information, please call police. news4's julie carey is in
