control. >> nbc's jay gray has been in ferguson since the violence started more than a week ago. he joins us now with the latest on what's happening there. jay? >> hey there. yeah, another rough night overnight here. and it seems like police are changing their strategy, their tactics almost every night. they even included the national guard now. there's just been no end to the violence here. the streets in ferguson exploded with violence again overnight. >> numerous reports of shots fired. we had two fires. one at a business. one at canfield, our officers came under heavy gunfire.

our officers confiscated two guns during a car stop near the staging area. these are not acts of protesters but acts of violent criminals. >> rocks and bottles were among several things apparently thrown at officers along the front line. 31 people were arrested in the chaos, including a group inside this pickup where police found what was a possible molotov cocktail. violence continues. despite another change, which allows for more officers on the ground and for the first time on rooftops and, despite another showdown, police are confident they can restore order in ferguso ferguson. >> if we're going to solve this, we're going to have to do it together and i'm not going to let the criminals that have come

and the on the right. the one on the left could face a tight race against current democratic senator. the primary in alaska could be important. we're joined by mike murray, senior political editor. good morning. >> good morning. >> one of the dan sullivans is running for the senate. why are we watching that race? >> that could very well end up determining who controls the united states senate in november and afterwards. it looks like dan sullivan, the one running for senate on the republican side, he is the favorite in this republican primary. most people expect him to win. he would take on incumbent democratic senator in a very close race. it's worth noting that these alaskan contests can be unpredictable. it's worth noting there's not a lot of good polls like we see in other states and in the course of these electrics, we get the results very, very late, given the time difference. this is one we'll be paying attention to in the very late hours on election night come

november. it's all looking, shaping up to be a begich versus sullivan contest. >> so, sullivan is facing two challengers. one is joe miller, tea party candidate in 2012, who ended up winning the republican primary, but ended up losing the general election to lisa murkowsky. there's another person in the race, treadwell, elected official. but all indications are that sullivan has been the establishment favorite and he has the big advantage in this contest. >> let's talk a little bit about paul ryan. he has a new book out. he said he wrote the book and feels the country is on the wrong track. any advice that he's giving fellow republicans with this book? >> probably one of the biggest advices is that the republicans shouldn't be preaching to the choir, expand their base, do better with latinos and african-americans. we've heard this kind of advice before. it's much easier said than done.

as republicans try to craft policies to be able to appeal to african-americans, latinos, people in the middle class, the republican party still has a lot of work to do. a lot of people are wondering is this book a chance for paul ryan, you know, in advance of a presidential bid? maybe. it's also worth noting, too, that house members -- he is a member of congress, not an elected statewide official. ometimes harder to make a presidential bid as a sitting house member. of course, he was mitt romney's vice presidential canned at a time in 2012. for more from mark check out first read on nbcnews.com. redskins players taking notice. members of the team paid tribute to what was taking place in ferguson, missouri, last night. and does pizza give you

the district will celebrate chuck brown day on friday, which would have been brown's 75th birthday. a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held for the new chuck brown memorial day park on 17th and franklin streets in northeast washington. the chuck brown band will play at the howland theater. he died two years ago. the redskins are trending nationally on twitter this morning. partially for their preseason win last night, but mostly for this. browns quarterback johnny manziel gave the middle finger to the redskins bench after an incomplete pass. of course, it was caught on camera. in fact, it was broadcast live. manziel later said it was a mistake. >> i felt like i did a good job of holding my composure of judgment and slip up. >> being young, things happen. sometimes you don't know no better. we're all here playing, competing with each other. so, hopefully, he will learn from that.

i'm aaron gilchrist at the live desk. several air strikes across the gaza strip in response from some rocket fire from hamas. we'll show you video we're just getting in now. smoke in the distance on the gaza strip. no word of casualties that the point from the air strikes. this, of course, comes after some eight hours before a temporary truce was set to expire there between israel and hamas. egypt had persuaded the two sides to extend the truce

yesterday so they would have more time to negotiate a longer-term cease fire. again today, the reports, confirmation from israel that air strikes have resumed after rockets were fired from gaza into israel. that is the latest from the live desk. barbara, back in to you. >> thank you, aaron. take a look at this. tractor trailer, you'll see it in a minute. there it is, dangling off an overpass in new jersey. the 18 wheeler careened off the bridge. rescue crews were able to rescue the driver from the water. there's no report on how badly the driver was injured in the crash. the cause of this crash still under investigation this morning. meteorologist chuck bell joins us now with a look at the forecast. there are rain drops out there? >> you bet there are. it's not raining that hard out there. definitely drizzle drops to be found outside the area. in addition to the drops we had about an hour ago, there were spots of blue skies i could see

out there. little bit of everything out there for you today. still a mostly cloudy day in place. live view of the washington monument. northern maryland a little bit better chance of seeing some sunshine the farther north you travel. 77 now at reagan national airport. it's a steamy day, though. temperatures in the 70s. humidity is still at 74%. and that east wind is going to do nothing to help our sunshine chances for later on today, that east wind coming off the ocean. as a result, these low marine layer clouds will be sticking with us all day long. on the whole it's clouds and drizzle drops. overall impact will be fairly low. cloudy. chance of any measurable rain only about 30% at the most. any break of sunshine at all. we'll make it up into the low to

mid 80s. the rain intensity today really not all too crazy. may need your umbrella for five to ten minutes. on the whole it won't add up to too terribly much. better chances for substantial rains farther out to the west. going out to dinner tonight, can't rule out a stray sprivengspriveng sprivengle sprinkle or shower. good weather for the baseball game. i can't rule out a little bit of wetness there as well. take a look at it on storm team 4 radar. d.c. metro area. these light rain showers now coming from east to west. they're coming off the western side of the bay. the bay is dry. the western shore communities are dry. you don't have to go too far inland. extra heating from the land gives the extra lift. that's what generates these rain showers. upper marlboro, little drizzle there. central and southern prince george's county. farther out to the west, prince county, faulkner county.

this won't add up to much. you can see how really sparse the rain chances are. better chance coming in later today with the daytime heating into the shenandoah valley and this little area of disturbed weather may be able to generate a better chance of rain for southern maryland. in and around the metro, it will be drizzle drops at the most. future weather forecast is handling it now. doesn't pick up on the drizzle all that well. you can see hit or miss shower chances through 2:00. after 3:00 or 4:00, these shower and thundershower chances in the mountains get a little more organized. as soon as they bump up, they fade way, once the sun goes down. seven-day forecast time. here you go, everybody. it's going to be a warm one. we'll keep 85. probably should lower that down to 82 or three for today. and i've had to put a little chance for rain back into tomorrow as well. not going to be an all-day rain. sort of like today. our best rainy day, best chance will be thursday. then the rain ends friday and, ah, the weekend, barbara. look at that. highs in the 70s and 80s.

>> clear skies? >> lot of -- sunday looks great. saturday looks okay. >> all right. thank you. right now, hundreds of homes are under threat of a growing wildfire in central california. just a few miles from the entrance to the yosemite national park. take a look at all that smoke out there. thousands of people have evacuated their homes. no reports of any injuries so far. don't feed the whale in hampton rhodes, virginia. someone spotted a whale in the southern branch of the elizabeth river near norfolk. some are working to find out what species it might be. scientists say the whale could be sick or disoriented. college park is doing something about the way pedestrians get around near route one. you see these orange cones out there. a fence is going up in the same place to try to keep people cutting across busy route one where there isn't a crosswalk near the university of maryland

campus. speed limit on the road has also been dropped and new pedestrian signals have been installed. three people have died, trying to cross route one in college park this year alone. a traffic alert begins soon on two major roads in the district, 16th street bridge over military road is about 60 years old now. take a look. got lots of cracks in it. ddot will replace parts of it this fall. crews will work in stages so you don't have to change your route. police in hyattsville is looking for an elderly man who has demeadementia. he was last seen near bellcrest road along the kaiser building. mr. harkinson was wearing a light tan shirt, blue jeans and brown sandals. if you have any information about him, please call police.

new study shows your level of education aesffects the way u exercise. if you have a college degree, you're more likely to be active

on weekends. however, if you didn't finish high school, you're more likely to be active during the week. the study did not say one group was healthier than the other, however. soon, there could be kid-friendly services for google products like g-mail and youtube. you should not wear sunscreen when you have acne. >> you know me and sunscreen. >> i know the answer to that one. >> that is not true. there are different formulations of sunscreen. gels will be more light based than the heavy creams. if you're dry on your body and oily on your face use an spf of at least 30 cream on your body and the more light or gel formulations that come in sport or liquids that you spray on. don't spray it on your face. spray it in your hand, rub it together and apply it. it will be a very light film but everyone needs sunscreen, including patients who suffer from acne. >> sun screens formulated just for your face? >> there are some that are for like sports because you're sweating a lot. when you sweat and it drips in your eyes, it can sting. >> number four, it would affect teenagers but also adults. acne is caused by stress. you notice the picture behind you. you said we have sn schein and
