lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. angry crowds forming in st. louis, missouri, after another deadly officer-involved shooting as ten days of protests are taking a toll in ferguson as they are coming off another violent night. scott, what are you hearing? >> the latest shooting happened four miles away from ferguson and still a busy, active scene. st. louis police say a man tried to rob a convenience store and when officered tried to arrest him they say he pulled a knife and then shots were fired. the suspect died at the scene. many of the protesters gathering and screaming at investigators. police in ferguson arrested 31 people in clashes, two people were shot. and authorities say police came under heavy gun fire. we also know four officers were hurt by rocks and a bottle thrown at them. the national guard in the area

but keeping its distance for now. ferguson's mayor is calling for an end to the violence and says most of the residents support what leaders are doing. >> right now i'm focused on the well being of my community today and going forward. the vast majority of my community put that number in the 95th percentile is absolutely supportive of what we have been doing and what we will do to go forward. >> attorney general eric holder plans to meet with investigators about michael brown's death and a grand jury expected to start hearing evidence in that case very soon. back to you. >> if you would like to get alerts sent to your cell phone download the free nbc washington app. new at 4:00 a neighborhood in loudoun county being targeted by a burglar. someone broke on to the porches of six homes this morning while people slept. people say the person got on to the porches by cutting the screens or breaking the locks.

he or she did not get into the actual homes. nothing was taken. help is pouring in for a local wounded warrior who lost everything in a house fire last week. captain edward cline is a triple amputee who lost both legs and one arm in afghanistan. he and his wife barely made it out alive when a fire engulfed their home last week. today captain cline describes to news 4 how his wife saved his life. >> i went to try to climb out of the basement on my hands and knees basically to climb up the stairs. she was able to pull me out on to the front porch. the amazing part is that by the time i got outside there were neighbors waiting to help. >> local businesses are helping the couple. coming up tonight mark segraves shows us how one company is helping that couple build a brand new home. if you want to pitch in head to our website, nbcwashington.com and search for wounded warrior.

an arlington man is facing charges in a hit-and-run accident with an unusual twist. police say he was naked when he caused this crash. the guy was spotted riding along south barton street. he crashed the bike into two vehicles and ran into nearby woods. roland hitchens was arrested a short time later. he is charged with dui, indecent exposure, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving on a suspended license. he is being held without bond. police tell us a 19-year-old wood bridge girl called 911 over a pot deal gone bad. robbery detectives say they discovered the girl gave a man money to buy marijuana but she became upset when he didn't give it to her. she is charged with filing a false police report.

part of the program to train street car operators training will take part. 28 operators need to complete 30 hours training before they are certified to carry passengers. the street cars are supposed to go into operation by the end of the year. live pictures right now out of phoenix, arizona where flash floods have stranded people on roof tops. it has also knocked out power throughout the area. winds are high there, too. helicopters hovering above. so far no reports of injuries but we do know at least six people had to be rescued from vehicles after about two inches fell in just about an hour. more on this developing story as it comes into news 4. it is warm, humid and muggy. storm team 4 is tracking rain showers. >> chief meteorologist doug kammerer is on top of it all for us in the storm center. >> looking pretty good. we told you the best chance of rain would be south and west of

the d.c. metro area. that is exactly where we have the rain right now. first off the high temperatures so far, it sure did feel warmer than this. 85 in d.c. 82 manassas. look towards fredericksburg and back towards the west into portions of west virginia thunderstorm activity back towards you folks around the petersburg region. we will watch this area making its way towards the east and this area towards the west. i would not be surprised to see showers and thunderstorms develop once these areas collide. we will be talking much more about that. i will break that down for you and as we look towards the rest of the evening hours what you can expect maybe taking a jog. 83 around 7:00. watch out for isolated showers around 9:00 when we have the best chance for showers around the d.c. metro area. i will get back to you with a better chance of rain coming up in just a few minutes.

congress is out of town, we know, there is still a lot of work going on on the u.s. capit capitol. these are live looks at the capitol dome where the scaffolding is rising. construction workers are putting up what looks like braces along

the dome. the project will take a couple of years and will not impact tours inside the rotunda. day two for the defense in the mcdonnell corruption trial. >> bob mcdonnell's sister talked about their shared business but much of the focus was on problems she saw between the former first couple. here is julie carey. >> reporter: this can get kind of confusing because her name just like the former first lady's is maureen mcdonnell. but her big brother called her mo. the two of them shared a real estate partnership. we heard plenty about that at this trial. that's because two of jonnie williams' checks went to that company. while she provided testimony about the finances some of the equally important testimony came about the former first couple's troubled relationship.

maureen mcdonnell arrived at court with one of the other siblings and echoed about the former first lady's erratic behavior. she said she can be very sweet, very tender and the other side can be very manipulative and predictable and deceptive. she offered the most specific testimony about trouble in the first couple's marriage. the defense contends it is one of the reasons they couldn't have criminally conspired. ms. mcdonnell testified sometimest seemed the couple barely communicated but recalled a phone call with her brother in which she could hear the first lady yelling at the governor in the background. testified mcdonnell i saw the strain on the relationship after he became governor. maureen mcdonnell's most

lauer the police officer who shot their son should be arrested and held accountable for what he did. the redskins are getting national attention today for something that happened before last night's game. >> it had nothing to do with touchdowns and everything to do with the turmoil in ferguson. dianna russini joins us with more. >> it could have been any of us, that is what redskins safety ryan clark said about the fatal shooting of 18-year-old michael brown. it is why clark and several teammates took part with the people of ferguson, missouri during pregame introduction. the defensive backs came out of the tunnel with their hands raised, palms forward, the don't shoot protest which has become sinonymous with what is going on in ferguson. clark went on to say it was a good opportunity to make a

statement and be more than just football players. talking about our weather now, we have rain on the way or is it behind us now? >> we have showers out there. it is warm and humid with scattered showers. it's summer time. august in d.c. the temperatures are not quite as warm as they normally would be this time of year. average high temperature is 86 degrees. we are close to that in d.c. most everywhere else low 80s. pretty nice evening towards union station where the flags are blowing. 85 degrees the current temperature. winds out of the southeast at 10 miles per hour. the dew point above 65. 81 in frederick. i talked about the showers being south and west of d.c. if you are thinking about getting in biking your biking

forecast 83 at 6:00. 81 at 7:00. don't be surprised by an isolated shower but most will remain on the dry side and muggy side. here are the showers to the south and towards fredericksburg and petersburg. some of the showers are producing thunderstorms and some of the storms making their way in through portions of virginia over the next hour or so. that is really going to be about it. i think most of this is going to be falling apart this evening. we will see a few more showers develop, places like that. that is about it. a lot of cloudiness around our region as we continue to be in an area of low pressure. big area of low pressure to the north. this is going to slide down our way very slowly. as it does so it will increase our chances for rain a couple of times here. future weather paints it out well. 8:00 tonight down towards culpeper county a few showers. fairfax county maybe.

tomorrow morning no problems, just cloudy. a little on the muggy side. we will have shower activity back towards the west. that is where most of it will be tomorrow back towards culpeper and maybe loudoun county. thursday another round of scattered showers. i think better coverage during the afternoon on thursday. that might be the day that most of us need to take the umbrella with you. showers best chance through the west. 83 to about 88 degrees as we head to the afternoon. temperatures around average. 86 on wednesday and thursday. better chance of showers thursday. i think a better chance wednesday night and then again on friday night. this is something we will watch. most of the day on friday looking dry with a high of 82. friday night into early saturday we could see showers and maybe heavier rain late friday night. that is something we will watch for you for sure. right now most of the weekend

did you know you can tell how smart your kid is going to be based on doodles. >> there is science to back this up. they found a link between early artistic ability and intelligence. >> at 4 years old you can tell whether or not your kid is going to be a genius. according to this, this university in the uk looked at several thousand 4 year olds and analyzed their drawings. if your kid is able to do a figure of a person, the more detail determines how smart they are going to be. they followed the kids to age 10 and found out it was true. i don't know if i can draw a

sometimes ineeb reeated. >> uber, there is a new trend where people drinking will see a black car and say my uber is here which leads to really awkward confrontations that happen on the sidewalk. imagine getting into a car and realize it is someone stopping at a red light. the reason they say it happens is the color of the car. the black suv is the most common. if you have a gps on the dashboard people assume you are an uber driver. you don't want to get lost or stolen. >> did you know there are ubers for helicopters? >> it is called blade. so six seats can -- it is $520 a seat. if you want to rent the entire helicopter it is $3,200. this is out of necessity in new york where over the weekends yo -- you go to long island or the hamptons.

we know two police officers shot and killed a man who tried to rob a convenience store there. investigators say the officers tried to arrest a man and then he pulled out a knife and told them quote, shoot me now, kill me now. officers repeatedly asked him to put down the weapon and when he didn't they say they shot and killed him. some people are gathering chanting hands up, don't shoot. same chant being heard in ferguson. we go to ferguson on the ground, nbc's leanne gregg on the ground there. >> reporter: tasked with a lot of uncertainty about violence and unrest as the grand jury may begin hearing testimony tomorrow about whether to indict the officer who killed michael brown. after ten straight nights of violent unrest in the streets of ferguson the community and

police are bracing for night fall. monday night two civilians were shot and more than 70 people were arrested. the streets of ferguson resembling a battle zone in the heart of middle america. commander ron johnson, the man in charge of getting the situation under control says police used great restraint. >> these people are hiding behind bushes near homes. officers didn't want to take the risk of firing into a home. >> reporter: the unrest continues to find its way into local businesses. the neighborhood food mart has been looted twice since the unrest. security cameras capturing one of the robberies. police say the majority of protesters are peaceful, that a small group of agitators are inciting violence. a police-involved shooting in neighboring st. louis about two miles from ferguson. an african-american man

brandishing a knife came up to the officer and said kill me now. >> both officers fired their weapon striking the suspect and the suspect is deceased cht. >> reporter: police were called because the suspect allegedly had stolen from a store. the st. louis police chief called it an officer safety issue. >> it is reasonable that an officer should receive home safely at night. every officer has a right to defend themselves and the community. >> reporter: now adding pressure in an area still trying to find peace. so far no visible reaction in this community to today's shooting. from ferguson, missouri, i'm leanne gregg, news 4. attorney general eric holder will be in ferguson tomorrow to meet with the fbi and other

officials carrying out the independent federal investigation into michael brown's death. a grand jury could begin hearing evidence soon in this case. steve handelsman is live on capitol hill with details. >> the grand jury investigation is a local grand jury investigation around ferguson. there is also this justice department investigation here in washington seen by many as unusually quick and aggressive. as the unrest escalates in ferguson so does the federal investigation. president obama is sending attorney general eric holder. he goes tomorrow. dozens of fbi agents are already in ferguson, questioning witnesses to the shooting death of michael brown and the teen's alleged robbery of a store nearby and asking about police officer, darren wilson. with passion so intense federal officials worry that witnesses are intimidated. >> and so the fbi is there to

say you can talk to us. if you're scared to talk to local authorities you can talk to us. >> reporter: if wilson committed a crime by killing brown is a local issue. if he took away brown's civil rights to walk the street it is a federal issue. >> it may be the same incident but not the same crime. >> reporter: so two investigations. >> it is really not unusual when there has been a shooting of this kind, particularly of an african-american by a white cop. >> in 1992 after rodney king was beaten by police in los angeles rioting followed cops acquittal. for violating civil rights two officers were convicted. this year three police face charges. two cops in connecticut pleaded guilty after kicking and tasing a suspect who was down.

now with a young man dead, a federal probe in ferguson. a third autopsy on michael brown's body has been completed by a u.s. military expert ordered by the fbi as part of the civil rights investigation. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. pope francis is grieving the loss of three family members. the vatican says the pope is profoundly saddened by the news that his nephews, wife and two young children were killed in a car accident in argentina overnight. the family was returning from a vacation when their car collided with a truck. the pope's nephew is critically injured. pope francis is asking all who share in his grief to unite with him in prayer. few would recognize his face but most would know his booming voice that introduced the lineups on "saturday night live" for more than four decades.

you're watching news 4 at 4:00. wild fires are causing new problems near yosemite national park. overnight fire officials issued mandatory evacuation orders to nearly 13,000 homes and businesses in the possible path of the blaze. there were concerns about propane businesses. the local media reports the threat to that facility has passed. >> floodin turned this field into a fast moving stream. these horses are looking for higher land. many drivers were caught offguard. about two inches fell in just about an hour this morning. at least six people had to be rescued from cars. no one was seriously hurt. >> they call the broadcast rise and shine. it was more like rise and shake this morning. watch an earthquake happen on tv

live in oklahoma city. >> earthquake. it is still going. go up to the light. the camera is shaking. live on "rise and shine." earthquake in the metro. >> they sound pretty calm and happy about the quake. the quake had a magnitude of 4.2. there are no reports of injury or serious damage. earthquakes are not uncommon in oklahoma of late. this year the state has seen a sharp spike in quakes with a magnitude greater than 3. >> it has to do with fracking. our earthquake 2011 i was going

it's warm but it's not hot anywhere. we have not seen much in the way of hot weather at all so far in august. one or two 90 degree days. storms to the west. shenandoah and page county seeing showers. you will notice the boundaries are coming together. this one is moving to the west and this to the east. we could see some develop a little later this evening. future weather picks it up. look at 8:00 tonight, a few showers down towards culpeper. stafford county hit hard last night by upwards of two or three inches of rain. tomorrow morning a few showers possible but once again most of us see the cloud cover and it will be warm and muggy. tomorrow afternoon i think we are on the dry side with the exception of areas back to the west very much like today back

towards winchester and front royal and best chance of showers during the day tomorrow. right now a 30% chance of rain tomorrow. thursday morning possibly a few showers but i think a better chance of overall scattered shower activity on thursday. thirst i think the best chance to see rain move in. that is probably the day you want to take the umbrella. friday is a very interesting situation. friday a high of 82. we have a storm system moving from the north. that may give a good chance of stronger storms and maybe a chance of rain friday night into saturday. saturday a high of 80. sunday looking pretty good. high temperature of 82 degrees. not bad out there. the weekend looking good. next week high temperatures a little below average. >> thank you, doug. >> if you are looking for the hottest team in the area look no further than the washington

airlines like southwest and virgin america. travelers hope the added competition will help keep fares low. from dulles, megan mcgrath news 4. now to proof that some bosses have really lost touch with reality. new research from the university of california says power distorts a person's perception of time. managers feel as if they have more time at their disposal while workers feel just the opposite. that may be because bosses can extend the deadline or cancel a meeting. powerful people also severely under estimate the time required to complete a task possibly because they are focused on the end goal. some advice, draw your boss's attention away from the end result from asking questions that focus on the process to get there. it's a dangerous game for some. inside the new trend in sports

interstate into a creek after the cab of the truck catches on fire. it took a team of ten men to pull the driver to safety. it happened near route 80 this morning. the driver was air lifted to the hospital with burns. he is expected to survive. two lanes of traffic were shut down for at least two hours during rush hour. a new trend
