his death. >> new reaction from works who felt the tremor when a jeep crashed into their office. >> a minor miracle. >> and the supreme court delays same-sex marriages in virginia. an emotional rler coaster for one local couple. >> can you imagine the night before your wedding finding out you can't get married? >> news 4 at 11:00 starts now. >> rescue mission to save american citizens and now we know one of them was a journalist who did not survive. good evening. >> american journalist james foley was just one of the people the pentagon was trying to save during a rescue mission in syria earlier this summer. now more u.s. troops could be headed to iraq we get the latest from nbc's andrea mitchell. >> reporter: the pentagon announced tonight that earlier this summer the u.s. military tried to rescue james foley and several other hostages include something americans from an isis

site in northern syria. they landed in syria, they will helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and engaged in a serious fire fight. but the hostages were not there. one u.s. pilot was injured in this failed rescue mission. also tonight, the state department requested 300 more troops to guard the u.s. embassy in baghdad and the airport in baghdad against the growing isis threat in iraq. and the president announced that despite this failed rescue mission, he will not rest until isis is punished for the death of james foley. back to you. >> president obama spoke to foley's parent by phone today. they had held out hope for almost two years their son would be rescued. they want to make sure this doesn't happen again, especially with isis threatening to kill another u.s. journalist, steven sotloff. >> we pray that somehow steven and the others might be spared.

>> he felt this was his passion in life. >> yeah. >> it is just what he wanted to do. >> president obama says the world is appalled at foley's death and that u.s. will be relentless in stopping isis. >> now a much different scene in ferguson, missouri than what we've seen all week. this is a night protesters clashed with police, officers using tear gas and stun grenades. last night protests were a bit more peaceful but the streets were more crowded. now, this is the scene tonight. a lot smaller group. still holding signs and demanding justice for michael brown. the change in tone coincides with the eye rifle of u.s. attorney general eric holder. he met with people who live in ferguson, including the family of michael brown. mr. ferguson is promising a thorough civil rights investigation into the shooting death of brown. some of the protests moved to the courthouse where the grand jury is considering charges against the police officer who pulled the trigger. but the county prosecutor says

that is going to be a long process. >> everybody needs to know, deserves to know, want to know, what and why. and if there is something to be done about it currently, we're not going to rush anything through but we're not going to delay it any more than has to be necessary. >> an officer from a neighboring suburb has been suspended indefinitely after this video emerged of him pointing a gun at a protester and threatening to kill him. >> howard county maland police say officers were forced to shoot a man who had already stabbed himself and who came at officers with a knife. we're told two officers fired after dared friedman came toward them. he later died at a hospital. . >> chaos at a local office building tonight. an suv plow id 25 feet into the building. it destroyed a mercedes along the way but incredibly nobody was seriously hurt here. news 4 talked to people inside that office building about their

very close call. >> reporter: it certainly was. we're live inside the build wrg that car came barreling through. you can see it's boarded up here. this is where the hearing health care center is located. take a look here at their front door. it is unsafe to occupy this building now. there were a lot of workers inside at the time. fortunately, like you said, no one was hurt. >> it caused a lot of damage and made a big mess but fortunately no one was hurt when a jeep smashed into this office building. >> it seems like a minor miracle. >> this woman co-owns the health center. the suv crashed into one of her offices. the woman typically sitting at the desk where the suv came through was not there today. >> thanks god she was at our second location today in wheaton. so that is just -- i'm overwhelmed with that news. >> rescuers pulled the driver and child out of jeep and assisted several people out of

building but no one went to the hospital. it all started when the driver backed into this white mercedes in the parking lot. >> it really sounded like thunder. >> the mercedes belongs to maria. she was at work in the building when her car was damaged. >> i looked out the window and saw my car in the tree, which is not where i left it when i got here this morning. >> oh my gosh, yeah. i don't know what i would have done if i knew she was in the car. that would have been a disaster. just glad no one is hurt. >> the jeep driver apparently panicked, put it in drive and hit the gas. shooting 25 feet in the building where hundreds of people were working. >> it's pretty bad. kind of scary. >> will you able to come back to work? >> yeah, i think so. they will let us come back to work. >> so again, some works are hoping to be able to come back to work tomorrow. as you can see from the damage here, it'll take some time for them to clean up and reopen. live in rockville, news 4.

>> thank you. in his corruption trial, former virginia governor bob mcdonnell is expected to spend hours on the stand telling his side of the story. he testified today he did not give any special treatment to star scientific ceo johnny williams and that he and his wife, maureen, promoted a lot of virginia businesses. mcdonnell did testify thattis his wife started screaming at him the morning after he was elected showing some of the strain of facing her new role. defense lawyers claimed the couple's marriage was so broken they couldn't have conspired to help williams. >> i was talking about marriage and finances are hard for anybody. >> could have known about this for 18 months so it is good to be able to testify. >> stay on top of mcdonnell's testimony tomorrow by following julie carey on twitter. she will have the latest v developments on twitter.

news 4. >> a man's body found near a dumpster and now investigators are asking for help to help find the people behind this mystery. police say they have arrested two people for killing caesar over the weekend. four others are still on the loose. there is also a juvenile that police have not identified. there is an award for up to $4,000 for information. >> the latest company to have its credit card system breached, 51 ups stores were hit with a computer virus. card numbers, street addresses and e-mail addresses from about a hundred thousand transactions between january and earlier this month may have been exposed. a store in maryland and charlottesville, virginia were the only ones in our area to be affected. >> uncovering how easy it is for thieves to steal your bike, even if it's locked.

that's how much drivers on the dulles toll road will not have to pay for the next phase of metro silver line. the federal government has just approved a loan of that amount today. drivers with rising tolls for several years it pay for the first phase. the second phase will extend the silver line it dulles airport, then further into louden county. it is expected to open in 2018. >> an investigation by the news 4 i-team revealed more than 500 bikes stolen from outside metro station in the past two years. our undercover cameras caught some of them in the act. scott mcfar land shows how the crooks are operating and what metro police are doing to stop them. >> you just boarded to go to

year. different than the stations that are targeting most this year. metro blankets the bike racks of surveillance cameras. can you watch the images of crooks. but police say you ought to check how you lock your bike to be safe. >> one for the frame and one to the rear tire on the frame. >> 90% stolen last year used either chain or cable locks. metro recommends using one of these, a metro bike locker, available past the rack outside the station. more security than a lock alone. the locks insome cases, as our investigation shows, don't scare off the crooks. what about that bike? the one you tried to take? >> it was just sitting there. >> and thieves are increasingly targeting red line stations. metro transit police show seven of the ten most targeted stations are red line stations. that's an attempt made just monday. here outside the town station.

quite a bit of lightning indeed. that was trouble for them. meanwhile, couple of thundershowers way out here in the mountains of western maryland. they are falling apart. not much of a factor. we are all completely dry. skies are partly to mostly cloudy still. i think that will be the trend for the remainder of the overnight hours. as you look live, one of our nearby neighbors in northwest, 74 degrees at national airport. 71% humidity. no wind out there. so there could be a little bit of areas of patchy fog first thing tomorrow morning. otherwise, area wide temperatures into the upper 60s and low 70s. we're not dropping much between new and start-out time early tomorrow morning. early morning run, 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 in the morning. muggy but rain free fortd morning jog or bike ride. the weather impact on the whole for tomorrow, much like today. a relatively low impact but just like today, i think we will have that opportunity of some showers and storms.
