arrests, today police are renewing the search for answers into the death of a prince george's county teen. on today's anniversary of amber stanley's killing in 2012, police are passing out these flyers in the kettering neighborhood where she was shot to death. yesterday police say they were closer to a conclusion but are not ready to name a suspect or a motive. they're also not saying amber was the target. a $25,000 cash reward is offered for tips leading to an arrest. turning to our weather now, for the fifth day in a row we're facing the risk of rain out there. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal joins us with her forecast, her first one for midday. good morning. >> good morning, barbara. right now i'm tracking scattered light showers on storm team 4 radar, so you not only need your umbrella now but keep it handy for the remainder of the day because of these scattered showers. the weather having a low to moderate impact on your day. it's friday, maybe your kids are going back to school on monday, you wanted to get one last pool

day in. not a great pool day. plenty of clouds sticking around for the afternoon. it's humid out there too. we'll have showers at times throughout the day today, but the threat of a thunderstorm in my forecast quite low. here on the radar you can see this activity scattered about the area, pretty much everybody inside of the beltway seeing some rain right now. for the most part it is on the light side. the good news, barbara, the risk of strong to severe weather is very low today. now, there's a 70% chance you're dealing with rain, but again, just rain for the most part. the threat of a thunderstorm is very low. if we were to see anything later today, it could be on the heavy side. coming up in over ten minutes, i'll be talking about your weekend. showers till in the forecast for tomorrow. i'll have the latest timing on that. >> thanks, amelia. students in maryland and d.c. are getting ready to go back to school on monday and for some kids in the district, this year may be the last year in their current school. changes to d.c. school boundary maps were made yesterday.

the changes start taking effect in 2015 and will happen gradually. next year students will be allowed to stay at their current school if they don't want to move. the boundaries were changed to adjust for overcrowding or underused schools and to address travel and safety issues as well. well, don't be so quick to swipe your card at an atm. thieves have once again planted skimming devices on machines in this region. surveillance cameras snapped clear shots of these guys. you can see them actually attaching the skimmers to atms in fairfax county. these were all at 12 federal credit unions last month. earlier thieves put skimmers on sun trust bank atms. police say there are ways, though, to protect your money. >> really keep a close eye on any expenditures that are being used on their credit cards, their banking cards, debit cards, all of it. >> also be alert when you get your money. police say look for loose parts on the atm machines.

oftentimes skimmers are simply attached with some tape. d.c. has declared this chuck brown day, and a special tribute to the musician is just getting started right now. the godfather of go-go music would have celebrated his 78th birthday today. a ceremony in his honor is happening right now on langdon park at 20th and rhode island avenue northeast. molette green joins us with what's happening out there. >> reporter: well, barbara, good morning. the crowd is chanting "wind me up chuck," one of chuck brown's famous songs. the light rain coming down is not dampening the spirits of all the chuck brown fans who have come out. they have got their umbrellas up and they're ready for this dedication ceremony to begin. behind me you can see the stage is all set. city leaders, designers and of course the brown family will take the stage. even the chuck brown band will perform throughout the hour.

did not approve of the memorial's original design for a 900-seat amphitheater. after seeing it all done, ford still has questions. >> my biggest concern is it looks like they took out the amphitheater, but they designed it -- i used to be an interior designer, to put a stage right there and there's electricity there and i live within earshot of there. i mean the whole community, what we said is we don't want amplified sound here. >> reporter: inside the park, you can read about brown's life. from his days as a shoe shine boy in the '40s to his focus on percussion instruments. it's designed to be interactive, so lifelong fans from this neighborhood and beyond can enjoy. chuck brown will be alive forever, huh? >> always and always. as a matter of fact, i've got some go-go on my truck right now. >> reporter: now neighbors of course did not want a giant amphitheater here, but this park

now to a developing story. right now the national guard is leaving ferguson, missouri. this comes after a third night of peaceful protests. today the grand jury will continue reviewing evidence in an effort to decide if the officer who shot and killed michael brown should face charges. yesterday the county prosecutor said he intends to stay on the case despite calls for him to step down over his family ties to law enforcement. the anne arundel county police union just made an online donation supporting the officer who shot and killed michael brown. the police union donated $1,000 to officer darren wilson's go fund me campaign. the goal is to raise $250,000.

exclusively to the "today" show this morning. they're receiving a huge outpouring of support and we learned even pope francis gave them a call. foley's parents say the e-mail that they received from isis actually gave them hope after months of uncertainty. >> i actually was excited to see an e-mail, despite the conclusion they would execute jim. i underestimated that point. i did not realize how brutal they were and i actually hoped we could engage in negotiations with them. >> the foleys said they plan to start a fund to remember james. the pentagon is taking a much closer look at isis after the death of james foley. the group is being called one of the most serious threats to the u.s. security right now. nbc's brian mooar tells us how the white house is addressing this new threat. >> reporter: the execution of american journalist james foley has changed washington's focus

on the terror group, isis. >> they are an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether it's in iraq or anywhere else. >> reporter: with u.s. air support, iraqis are gaining background, but america's top general insists it will take more than just bombs to crush isis. >> this is an organization that has an apocalyptic end of days strategic vision, which will eventually have to be defeated. >> i don't think we've seen a more significant threat to american security since the early days of 9/11. >> reporter: isis is now threatening to execute a second american journalist, and calling for attacks on other american targets. it's a fight the obama white house doesn't want but can't ignore. >> mr. obama, i think, has realized he can't use this narrative any longer of how he's ending two wars on his watch. we're going to have to settle in for a long effort. >> reporter: the united states is now getting a first bitter taste of the terror iraqis are fleeing by the hundreds of

thousands. an isis threat that's growing stronger. president obama promises no combat boots on the ground. the state department is now requesting 300 additional american military personnel to protect u.s. facilities in iraq. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. right now iraqi security forces are fighting a different group of militants, a group called the league of the righteous has attacked a mosque in iraq's diala province 75 miles northeast of baghdad. more than 50 people have died, another 30 hurt. the people in the mosque were sunni muslims who were praying when the attacks happened. congressional investigators say the pentagon illegally swapped five taliban leaders to get army sergeant bowe bergdahl back. bergdahl was a prisoner in afghanistan for five years before the exchange. the government accountability office says the defense department should have notified congress at least 30 days before that transfer. investigators also say the pentagon used nearly a million

dollars of war-time funds unavailable for that transfer. the obama administration defended the swap saying concern for bergdahl's health required quick action. we're getting some new insight about the nation's economic health. federal reserve chairwoman janet yellen addressed the annual fed conference happening in wyoming. she said the recent recession complicated the fed's ability to assess the job market. she noted declining unemployment rate but still a high number of people who haven't had a job in more than six months. because of that, yellen says it's harder to determine when to adjust the interest rates. virginia's two u.s. senate candidates will square off eight times before the november election. democratic senator mark warner and gop challenger ed gillespie agreed to several more debates yesterday. they already met once last month in west virginia. they'll meet for two more televised debates, including one in fairfax county on october

7th. they're also expected to appear twice in northern virginia next month. ed gillespie is also spreading his message through ads. for more on that we're joined by mark murray, nbc senior political editor. >> good morning, barbara. >> reminding us of gillespie's background. tell people what his political background is. >> he's very well known to people like me and other political reporters. he served as former rnc chairman during the george w. bush years. he's a well-known strategist as well as a lobbyist. for anyone trying to get quotes, he was always on your rolodex. >> he is touting his blue collar roots now. he has a new ad out. let's have a look at it. we don't have it but you've seen it, haven't you? >> absolutely. what he's trying to do is stress that he's a businessman and stress, you know, his family. now, democrats will ending up saying that business background is part of a lobbyist and you'll

hear from from the mark warner campaign. >> and they don't call that blue collar. >> no. but then again ed gillespie, you want to put your background and resume in the best terms possible, so businessman is something that they are really trying to hope it resonates. barbara, he has a tremendous amount of money for this plt cal -- for this senate run and is using it in tv ads. >> is senator warner still the favorite in this race? >> he still is the favorite. the one thing to be worried about if there is a wave election. it doesn't seem like we're having a wave election yet but if there is a wave election, that is something that could take down a mark warner. right now polls show that he's in pretty comfortable shape in this presidential swing state that is virginia. >> let's talk a little bit about bob mcdonnell. we've been talking about his corruption trial. he has been on the stand and talking about his marriage problems. is this going to hurt his chances of becoming a vice president in 2016 or was that even an option? >> barbara, this whole trial, bob mcdonnell is trying to stay

out of prison. his political career is over with and so he's trying everything he can to make sure that he doesn't spend any time in jail at all. now, what is interesting is that bob mcdonnell in 2011-2012 was definitely trying to gun to be mitt romney's vice presidential nominee. and what we've kind of found out during the very same time, his marriage was falling apart. to a lot of political reporters, knowing that he was so eyeing this vice presidential gig, also making preparations for a presidential run in early 2013, how you can reconcile this falling apart marriage with all these maneuvers he was doing for higher office. >> so you think his career is over? i guess you never know. >> you never say never, but boy, his goal in this trial isn't to run for higher office. >> we have not heard anybody suggest that he might be running for vice president for 2016. >> no, but he definitely was thinking about it in 2012. >> well, good to talk to you.

this is just into the newsroom. a major recall of bean bag chairs after two children crawled inside those bags and suffocated. take a look here. the consumer products safety commission is recalling 2.2 million of the chairs made by ace bayou corporation. a 13-year-old in texas and 3-year-old in kentucky opened the bagged zippers, crawled

inside and suffocated to death. the chairs were sold at walmart, way fair.com and amazon.com. they come in all different shapes, colors and sizes. the maker is offering customers a free repair kit to stop the zippers from opening. fortune telling and magic arts are the talk of a community in northern virginia. front royal in warren county has long had a code on its books banning fortune telling and practicing magic. the town council has already voted once to remove the code and will take a second vote on monday. those in favor of reversing the ban say freedom of religion is at stake, but others fear losing the ban could bring crime, if they take the ban away it could bring in crime. they say things like tarot card readings need to be regulated. >> these people are selling something. even if they think of it as a religion, they are selling their advice, so it ceases to become a religion and is now a business. >> i certainly do not think that

into autumn that you get, the lower the price you can score. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal joins us now. washington won't be the best place for summer weekend, will it? you won't be able to swim in pools? >> it's going to be a 50-50 split. so tomorrow we're looking at scattered showers, otherwise cloudy skies. it could be overcast for a good portion of the day tomorrow. cooler and still muggy. sunday, though, is going to be beautiful. okay, so i have my umbrella and will keep it in my hand for the rest of the afternoon. tracking showers on storm team 4 radar. no thunderstorms. in fact in my forecast i'm updating it from earlier today. the threat of severe weather is quite low. but you could be dealing with some wet periods, especially into the mid-afternoon hours. now temperatures right now, we're in the 70s across the board. washington at 79 degrees. 73 in gaithersburg, 77 for those of you in manassas. one of the warmer locations coming in at 81. high temperature today, i've lowered these a bit from this

morning, washington warms to a high of 85. we were at 90 yesterday so today is cooler. 81 in hagerstown and 86 in fredericksburg. plenty of clouds for the remainder of the afternoon hours and continuing to track scattered showers. here you can see this activity on the satellite and radar. first i want to show you the clouds. pretty much everybody socked in with cloud cover and then there are those hit or miss showers, but again not tracking any lightning on the radar right now. so this activity continues to move through the area pushing its way through, pretty much moving east-southeast. as we pull out on the radar, you can see this way back in the panhandle of west virginia and then really nothing behind it. so as far as timing is concerned, we're going to have scattered showers around until about 3:00, 4:00 this afternoon. i think we'll have a period of dry weather for that evening commute, so there's some good news there. then as we work our way towards 8:00 p.m., i think we could see another round of showery activity, maybe an isolated thunderstorm. future weather, i have to say is having a difficult handle on the

weather today. forecast is difficult. some forecasts are easier than others. this one is a little bit tricky. here's what i'm calling for. scattered showers until about 3:00, 4:00. i think we'll have a dry period after that, but the clouds stick around. now how 5:00 on future weather, most of the area is mainly dry. any rain is concentrated back into west virginia and making its way into virginia, areas like winchester, maybe leesburg, up through hagerstown and frederick. more in far western maryland. 8:00, future weather is dry but i do think we could see another round of showers at that point. motley crue at jiffy lube live. showers are possible for the concert. i don't think we're looking at any severe weather so that's good news but prepare for some wet grounds. tomorrow we continue to track scattered showers on storm team 4 radar. it's cooler tomorrow, a high around 80, but it's still muggy.

illness. >> doctors at emory say both patients aren't showing any signs of ebola in their blood and don't pose a health risk to the rest of the country. nancy writebol's son, say the ebola survivor, their mother, is doing well and looking forward to resting. they were on the "today" show and say it's been a long road but they're healthy to have their mom healthy again. >> it's been the lowest of lows and at the same time the highest of highs. we've experienced both in thinking about mom's potential death and succumbing to ebola but then her recovery and being healed in that way has just brought our spirits up and really encouraged us. >> writebol was released from emory university hospital this week. her sons say it was the combination of faith, excellent care and the new experimental drug that helped nurse their mom back to health. the family says despite almost having died from ebola, their mother is not done with africa. no stations are closed as metro track work returns tonight. metro will be testing the new

7000 series trains on the red line and your wait could be as long as 20 minutes. you'll have a 20-minute wait on the orange line as well. metro's other lines will be running with normal weekend service. a maryland man is accused of taking advantage of older people looking for love. police say he bilked more than a million dollars from women who used online dating sites. he's accused of pretending to be interested in the victims and then convincing them to give him money. he is facing skpeconspiracy, ma fraud and wire fraud charges. a pair of scam artist had the tables turned on them when an elderly woman they robbed had them arrested. this 92-year-old woman named violet got them. two men came to her home claiming to be chimney workers. while she was distracted outside, the second stole prescription drugs and $165 from inside the house. violet says the thieves didn't

stop there, they told her they'd come back and fix her chimney for $3,000. violet decided to do some investigating then. when she looked through her phone book and couldn't find a listing for the company the men claimed to work for, she called police. >> kind of funny to us. you know, we would use google or we would use the internet. a 92-year-old woman is going to use the phone book to see if she can find the company name. >> you folks tell your folks to be careful. they might not realize but they could we a victim next. >> when the two suspects returned, the police were waiting for them. both were charged with burglary. we know a lot of you will be heading up 95 tomorrow for the battle of the beltways. you'll see the starters at least through the first half and possibly longer. skins defensive end jason hatcher will also make his first appearance in a game. this is the first matchup between the teams since december of 2012, and that was just months before the ravens won the

we're working for you this morning with this health alert. health officials are warning against a medicine that says it can treat your child's cold. the unapproved medicine is called baczol. the problem is it contains an antibiotic that would normally need a prescription. doctors warn the drug is not safe for young children. it is popping up on store shelves and convenience stores in latino communities. well, if you haven't taken the family out to nats park, you may want to get out there tonight. the nats have been on a magical run. the team is going for its 11th straight win tonight. if they win, it would be a new franchise record for them. five of the last six wins have been walk-offs. that's something that hasn't been seen in baseball since the '80s. last night it was an error that won that game. after a bad throw from the diamondbacks third baseman they scored and the nats win 1-0. tonight's game is at 7:05.

a little league team is making a big name for its hometown, chicago. jackie robinson west is an all african-american team of 13 boys from the city's south side. the team beat fan favorite mo'ne davis and the tawny dragons last night and now chicago advances to the u.s. title championship game, the first time in 31 years. it's an accomplishment with meaning well beyond the outfield. >> south side chicago is tough, so seeing what these kids are doing is showing the other side of the chicago that you might not hear about. >> the last time jackie robinson west made it this far was in 1983. the first all african-american team to make it. chicago will face nebraska in a rematch game saturday for the championship. parents, listen up. when you work and how much you work could have an impact on your child's weight. plus meet a health conscious chef. he'll be part of this year's national book festival, and today he's cooking for us. stick around, we'll be right back.
