paid tribute to their son at a candlelight vigil. he was killed a year ago this week in southeast d.c. >> i don't like the fact that he lost his life over nothing. ♪ >> the 24-year-old are was a community activist who mentored youth. his family said he told teens to stop the violence. ironically, he became a victim of what he spoke out against. >> he was running. somebody shot him in his back. >> reporter: his mother says he was caught in the cross-fire, an innocent bystander at 4th street and livingston terrace. police arrested the suspected gunman a couple days after timothy was killed. >> his life was cut short too soon. we keep the legacy going. >> i'll miss his smile, his singing. >> reporter: he leaves behind parents, a son, and a community who will never forget his positive message. >> a lot of people love my son.

>> i gave my heart and soul the to virginia. sometimes my children and wife got the short end of the stick. >> follow julie carey for details as mcdonnell gets back on the stand monday. >> new tonight, vice president joe biden is tackling the crisis in iraq in a new op-ed in the washington post. the vice president says iraqis must rise above their differences to roust terrorist group isis. he condemned isis for the killing of american journalist james foley and said the u.s. would not negotiate with them. he went on to say the u.s. support it is new iraqi leadership that's about to come into power. tonight the fbi says there are no credible threats from isis here in the united states. but the pentagon and the white house say air strikes in iraq might not be enough to defeat the terrorist group. the u.s. may have to go after targets in syria. richard engel has our report. >> reporter: for two days in a row white house officials, military officials have been

suggesting, hinting, perhaps preparing the american public for the fact that u.s. mission, the war against isis could be about to expand. not just air strikes in iraq against isis, but across thor border into syria as well. so far, no officials are saying that it is going to happen but one of the top advisers of the president said borders don't mean anything. almost an overt suggestion that the air strikes could be going into syria soon. isis doesn't just operate in iraq. it operates in syria as well. the main headquarters is in syria. if you attack in iraq only, it leaves the largest part of the group untouched in syria. richard engel, nbc news, along the turkish/syrian border. the hope tonight in ferguson, missouri, is that three nights of peaceful protest will inspire calm into the weekend. businesses are re-opening.

after several days, school is set to start on monday. today we learned more about the men and women trying to decide if officer darren wilson should be charged. three of the 12 grand jury members are black. closely matching the racial makeup of st. louis county. five of the 12 jurors are women. the group will meet again on wednesday to consider more evidence in the case. >> right now dozens of people from the washington area and beyond are on their way to ferguson. they organized a bus trip on social media. they are on their way to join weekend rallies in support of michael brown. chris lawrence has our report on that from union station. >> you're on the bus. >> reporter: a bus load of people on their way to ferguson brought together by a single tweet. >> i asked twitter if anybody else wanted to go. the response was overwhelming. >> reporter: laurel organized the trip and said the bus could have carried more. >> several people cancelled

coming because they were afraid. they said, i'm still afraid to go to ferguson. >> reporter: we haven't seen violence like this in days. the crowds dwindled and the governor pulled the national guard. with the protest dying down, do you think you're going too late? >> it's the right time. >> reporter: someone put down $8,000 to reserve the bus. the group needs to the pay him back. so far he's only raised $2500. >> i sent e-mails to every organization with the word black in its name. i received nothing. >> reporter: are you disappointed. >> if you claim to be about social justice and change and it's in your mission statement, you should be about it. >> reporter: they are taking it upon themselves, trying to raise money along the way. 40 people riding 14 hours to help the other demonstrators and

register missouri residents to vote. chris lawrence, news 4. >> many in ferguson are calling for charges against darren wilson. the police officer is finding support online. a go fund me page was created for wilson. it maxed out at $235,000. a second page was created. more than $35,000 has been donated to the new effort. one group to donate was the fraternal order of police, lodge 70. tonight county police chief ken davis commented on the donation saying, "i certainly embrace the necessity for due process for police officers and all citizens and, as a life member of the fop, i know the importance in our presentation. however, there are occasions when a police chief will agree to disagree with the fop president. this is one of those moments. >> a few newspapers stopped using the term redskins. at least part of the hometown publication has taken a stand.

been linked to the crimes. she's been arrested four times in five years after police raided apartments and office spaces. her name was on a lace for each of the properties including a falls church apartment targeted in an under cover prostitution bust last month. police seized cell phones and computers from her home. >> new tonight, a data breach first reported at u.p.s. stores could be impacting more than a thousand retailers nationwide. the department of homeland security says computer cash registers could be infected with malicious software, allowing hackers to steal computers and customer data. vhs is asking retailers to check for the software known as back off to see if they are infted. earlier this month ups discovered the software in 51 of the stores around the country. >> she is the first little leaguer to make the cover of "sports illustrated." now mone dais is talking about

2:00 p.m. over the last year the cub has become the most popular attraction by far. she's also been a big boost for the local economy. >> oop. >> officials at destination d.c. tell news 4 hotels in the area created packages for tourists centered around pandamania. >> heavy rain cause uhhing problems in the pacific northwest today. this is the scene in washington state near the canadian border. the rain is causing mud slides that closed two busy highways and destroyed a house. crews say it could be days before the highways re-open. flooding is a major problem in parts of illinois tonight. nearly five inches of rain fell overnight in the chicago area, causing road closures and train delays there. dozens of homes also flooded. take a look. mostly in the south chicago area. the high water caused massive gridlock during the morning rush hour.

all in all watching a boundary, you can see the boundary here. we saw the easterly wind. we are seeing a little bit in the way of some influence here. we are seeing more showers down toward the mountains. i expect to see this early tomorrow morning. let's time it out. future weather tonight -- shows some of the showers around northern virginia. back to the panhandle of west virginia tomorrow. don't be surprised to see showers early. then during the day, showers coming in as the easterly wind takes over. maybe faround 7:00 most of northern virginia. showers around d.c. we'll see off and on showers. i'm not expecting a washout but a lot of cloud cover during the day. once again, seeing a lot of shower chances through the afternoon. sunday, a different story. early sunday, no problem. sunday afternoon, beautiful.
