thanks for joining us here. i'm chris lawrence, we want to start with a developing story in gaithersburg. a man crashed his plane at the montgomery county air park. witnesses saw the smoke plane take off but when it got 75 feet in the air it started to fall. the pilot was the only person on board and he's been seriously hurt. crews had to shut down the runway for several hours. they have managed to clear the scene and the federal aviation administration and national transportation safety board have

both been called in to investigate. want to turn to storm team 4. it's been a soggy day for a lot of us and we haven't seen the last of the rain drops. amelia has the very latest on the rest of the night. >> good evening, continuing to track rain, generally light to moderate in intensity on storm team 4. you can see this activity right now favoring southern maryland and the northern neck. charles, saint marys and calvert county, down to locations mainly south and east of fredericksburg. rain will continue to favor these areas for the next few hours with everybody else for the most part mainly dry. so 7:00, scattered showers again mainly in southern maryland and northern neck. by 9:00, most of the area will be mainly dry but cloudy. then as we work our way into the late evening and overnight hours. we'll see more scattered showers developing. 73 degrees is the temperature right now and you can see for the most part you can expect temperatures for your evening to be in the low 70s. heading out this evening, grab

watch in tonight's game. back to you, guys. >> thank you. nbc 4 is the official television station of the washington red kinz. you can watch the game at 7:30. >> in ferguson, missouri, there are new protests in the streets, this time for the police officer who shot and killed michael brown. supporters of darren wilson say the actions were warranted and justified. they raised more than a quarter million dollars in donations for his legal defense and in just under an hour, protesters in d.c. will rally in support of michael brown. this is a live look at where they'll meet. they are gathering at mount vernon square and marching through chinatown. >> the white house just confirmed a review of a federal program that provides military equipment to local law enforcement. this comes after days of protest in ferguson, missouri. the images of armored police using tanks or tank-like vehicles are still fresh in our minds. jay gray is in ferguson tonight

with how things have changed. >> smoke filled the air again in ferguson, but this time the smell of barbecue, not the tear gas or pepper spray that had clouded this community for more than a week. >> we want to get it back to where it was before and keep going and make it better than it was before. >> before michael brown was shot and killed. >> reporter: the naacp held a peaceful march through the neighborhood today and there was a moment of silence this morning as brown's high school football team played its first game of the season. >> while across town, supporters of the officer involved in the shooting began to break their silence. >> we will not hide. we will no longer live in fear. we ask this question, can justice ever be attained if one side supporters are living in fear of speaking out. >> dozens gathered today at the rally to show support for air darren wilson. >> that officer wilson's actions on august 9th were warranted and

justified and he has our unwavering support. >> in this community, where two weeks later supporters on both sides are still hungry for answers and justice. jay gray, nbc news, ferguson, missouri. >> back here in the east coast, thousands of people demonstrated in the streets of new york city protesting against police brutality and demanding justice for eric garner. >> fired up! >> the reverend al sharpton organized today's we will not go back rally. garner was selling cigarettes last month when a police officer put him in a choke hold. his death has been ruled a homicide and the grand jury is now investigating. at today's rally protesters also remembered ferguson teenager michael brown. the protesters expressed their grief and anger and hope for a better future. on the brink of natural disaster, we'll tell you why history could repeat itself and strand countless people around

howard county police had to shoot and kill two men in the last two weeks and both of them were trying to commit suicide.

the latest incident happened in ellicott city this morning. he told the dispatcher he would kill everyone in the home. officers found him holding a knife on the front lawn. they used a taser on him but he kept coming. two officers were forced to shoot. they are both on routine administrative leave. right now a volcano is erupting in iceland and officials have been forced to shut down the air space. experts say this volcano was under a large glacier and laugh va is melting the ice. it could send steam and ash in the air. a no fly zone within 100 miles of the volcano. that happened in 2010 if you remember, a volcano erupted in iceland and spewed a gigantic ash cloud that blocked out the sky and canceled more than 100,000 flights. it's one of the most congested traffic corridors in our area but starting tomorrow, commuters will have new options

imagine if every one-year-old had a birthday party like bao bao. this being washington, some kids actually do. adoring fans packed the zoo and sang happy birthday to her. surviving to her first birthday is a major milestone, only the second panda born in the zoo to do so. >> it's her birthday. and so i feel like i have to be here, you know. i feel like i would be disloyal if i didn't come for her birthday. >> throw a party, invite your friends, that's what birthdays are all about and that's what happened today at the national zoo. among all of the guests here for

nearly 5,000 volunteers spread out to spruce up, more than 100 xooms against the city. this is d.c.'s tenth annual beautification day. in southwest we found volunteers of all ages planting flowers outside the elementary school. i got to imagine by the time they finish up there, they might have been a little soggy, the rain was pretty steady at points. >> a good day to plant the flowers didn't have to water them. the good news, the second half of our weekend will be much better. tomorrow we're going to notice clouds giving way to sunshine and high temperatures for the most part in the low 80s. here's the latest check of storm team 4 radar, widely scattered showers, really favoring parts well south of the d.c. metro region. as we continue to work into the evening and overnight hours, scattered to isolated showers continue, possibly lasting as long as 2:00 a.m. if you're going to be out late tonight, like i said earlier, take the umbrella and have it handy. at 7:00 on future weather, still

area. heading to the tropics, talking about tropical depression, north of the dominican republic, maximum sustained winds at 35 miles per hour moving northwest for the most part. tomorrow it is expected to strengthen to storm chris to ball, bringing 4 to 8 inches of rain and potentially on tuesday strengthening to a category one hurricane. right now it's forecasted to have little, to no major impacts on the united states. tomorrow a high of 82 degrees. finishing off with sunshine. a nice day tomorrow, low humidity and comfortable conditions. monday a high of 85 degrees. we have a lot of students heading back to school on monday. frederick and montgomery counties and the district, howard and charles county. here's the bus stop forecast, comfortably cool, temperatures in the mid to upper 60s.

welcome back to "news 4 at 6:00. we're over an hour away from kickoff, redskins and ravens. you see rg3 warming up before the ball game. the starters plikly to play at least the entire first half in preseason game number three. jason pugh back in the studio with you, diana russini is live from m and t bank stadium.

we know the third preseason game means so much to the nfl teams. what exactly are the redskins hoping to improve upon tonight? >> reporter: well, jason, we can finally get an idea what this offense is going to look like. the wide receivers on this team have been telling me all week long, they want to work on timing. we're going to take a close look and see that because they are going to be out on the field for an entire half. we'll finally get a chance to look at thaxt really, the biggest story line into the game this week, will rg3 be able to protect himself? it's a very hot topic with fans. his issue sliding and taking hits. monday against cleveland, the problems were evident. hopefully tonight we will see that he will protect himself better. he says he's gone over tape with the coach and he is learning, but he understands why everyone is so concerned. >> i understand the concern from the fans, from my teammates and
