that is happening right on the streets of washington d.c. hundreds of protesters turn out to demand action in the michael brown case. good evening. i'm chris lawrence. today marks two weeks since a police officer shot and killed the unarmed teenager, and the support for that officer continues to explode online. a page raised more than $300,000 for officer wilson and his family. it's surpassed the amount collected for michael brown's family. white house officials will attend brown's family monday in st. louis. president obama ordered a review of the federal program that provides military equipment to local police. officers used armored vehicles as they faced off with protesters in ferguson. rallies were held across the country today, including right here. let's see what motivated protesters knew in d.c.

way, it also disappoints me because maybe we haven't made the move forward. it isn't as peaceful as i thought growing up in a small town. >> reporter: they made a stop on the steps of the national portrait gallery. an expression of the tone and theme of this spirited rally. derrick ward. >> big crowds out there. we have learned new details about a plane that crashed today. investigators now saying moments before the plane went down, the pilot reported a mechanical issue. the crash happened at the montgomery county air park. witnesses saw it take off, but when the plane was 75 feet in the air, it started to fall. the pilot was the only person on board. he's in the hospital tonight in serious condition. the faa and ntsb are

investigating. that's the sound of an israeli air strike today, and those bombs destroyed an entire apartment building in gaza. 22 people have been hurt and 11 are children. witnesses say the israelis fired a warning missile at the roof and warned residents to evacuation moments before the air strike. the israeli military said it targeted the apartment because hamas was running operations from inside. turn to storm te 4. saw our share of showers today, but how is the rest of the weekend shaping up? >> the good news, tomorrow a 180 from what we saw today. on storm team 4 radar, we're tracking isolated showers in fredrick and carol counties. this activity is sinking to the south for those of you in montgomery county, maybe dealing with sprinkles overnight. tomorrow, we finish with sunshine and temperatures are

a montgomery county dad is facing felony charges for trying to steal utility poles. police say his teenage sons were

accomplices. this dad and his sons broke into a construction site on research boulevard in rockville. he tried to load them into a u-haul, but the poles didn't fit. they were going to come back in the morning. someone saw them, called 911. these poles are worth about $25,000. apparently, they were planning to sell them for scrap metal. right now, a volcano is erupting in iceland. officials have been forced to shut down the air space over that part of europe. this volcano is under a gracier and it's erupting the ice. officials declared a no-fly zone within 100 miles of the volcano. that is what happened in 2010. a volcano erupted in iceland, spewed an ash cloud that blocked the sky for days and cancelled more than 100,000 flights. new tonight, a special honor for a navy sale.

lieutenant looney was killed in action, but his name is going to live on at his high school. >> reporter: generations of students can now learn about him after his school named its convocation center after him. lieutenant looney was one of the nine navy seals whose helicopter crashed in afghanistan. he graduated in 1999, and other students have followed in his footsteps and become navy seals. ? we want to alert you to traffic alerts sunday. we'll tell you why you could see a lot of police and fire crews and when to avoid it. plus, you needed an umbrella today, but what about the rest of the weekend? amelia is going to help

new tonight, someone found a man lying in the middle of the street. tonight, police think he fell out of the back of a van and died. todd thomas had a serious head injury when someone found him this morning near mead village. he died at the hospital. officers asked around, but no one in the neighborhood saw it happen. investigators say it's possible the driver didn't even realize thomas had fallen out. a tropic alert for anyone driving through d.c. crews are going to shut down the street between 12th and 13th. they have to conduct a drill for the streetcar system.

it will test operators on how they respond to an accident. that area will be closed from 6:00 in the morning until 11:00 a.m., and there will be parking restrictions. probably d.c.'s most famous one-year-old. the panda is celebrating her first birthday. the cub wasn't distracted from devouring her birthday cake. staff placed three postersn front of her, painting the s symbols for fertilitfertility. >> she picked long life, but he also picked the two after that. she kind of -- we think she p k picked all three. >> couldn't get enough of her cake. it was made of apple and pear

evening hours with temperatures in the mid 70 ss. the weather not impacting the nationals game tomorrow. bring the sunscreen. temperatures for the game will be around 80 degrees. as we head down to the tropics, right now, we're tracking tropical depression 4, just to the north of the dominion republic. likely to strengthen to a tropical storm tomorrow. that'd be tropical storm cristobol. it then continues to strengthen potentially to category one hurricane, but having little if any impact on the united states. stick with us. we need to keep a close eye on the track of that storm because it could still change. now, here on the seven-day, notice the sunshine. monday a high temperature of 85. upper 80s on tuesday. we jump to 90 on wednesday. unfortunately, chris, next saturday, there is a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. this is not from the tropical depression but a cold front

rough game? >> yeah. very rough game for pretty much the offense for the redskins. if tonight is an example of what to expect from the redskins offense this regular season, it's safe to say at least they'll have a lot of work to do. with griffin being the quarterback and the face of the franchise, it starts with him. griffin was not sharp tonight. because of that, the entire starting offense wasn't sharp tonight. redskins and ravens entered this game undefeated in the preseason. redskins first team defense looked good, including the new guy, hatcher getting after flacco here. first game as a remember of the skins and he's already making an impact. as good as the defense was, the offense was the opposite. second quarter, griffin goes down, sacked by elvis dumervil. he was sacked three times in the game. skins give the ball back to baltimore. flacco made them pay. led the ravens down the field. with 30 seconds to go before halftime, airing it out the back

of the end zone, steve smith making a huge play. baltimore takes the 10-3 lead into halftime. first play of the second half, more problems for rg3. intercepted by the rookie c.j. mosley. this would lead to a ravens field goal. they're up 13-3. grifens numbers, 5 of 8 and a passer rates of 27.1. cousins faired better. first series of the game. cousins led 13, a pass for a touchdown to moss. cousins threw for 122 yards and two scores. it wasn't enough. the ravens fourth quarter, tyrod taylor to thompson for the touchdown. ravens win this game, final score, 23-17. with more on the game, we welcome in diana, who is live

from m&t bank stadium. i'm going to assume all the talk will be about griffin over the next few days. is that true? >> yeah. nice guess, jason. i spoke to jay gruden for a few minutes before he got on the bus. i said, jay, take away, what's on your mind? he said, it's a preseason game. we stunk and did some things, but all of this, we can improve on. the offense you're seeing is vanilla compared to what you'll see in week one. they're disguising that right now. robert griffin iii and jay gruden say things need to change between now and week one against the texans. >> we didn't play very well. the offense goes as i go, and personally i have to play better. we shot ourselves in the foot too many times and had mistakes. when we can get 11 games working in the same direction, we'll be something special. we'll get it fixed by the time houston comes around. >> people will be saying he's
