those words from a black man who lives in ferguson, missouri. not referring to his fellow towns folk. he meant the many others, the many who never even heard of ferguson before last week. the many who lately have emerged at night kind of like bats to flutter around, throw a molotov cocktail, confront a cop or two and holler no justice no peace and ask for directions to the nearest 7-eleven. the black man who wants those guys gone has lived in ferguson, he is devastated by what happened to michael brown and he is deeply saddened by the racial disconnect that has plagued his town. that man's sister told me about him, she lives here in the d.c. area but says her family has been in ferguson for a century. 100 years ago the races were separated in ferguson and 100 years later they still are. she told me one of the things that troubles her ten years ago, she actually conducted diversity training sessions for the
10:26 am
ferguson police department. she said there were three black officers on the force back then. ten years later that number hasn't changed. what also hurts her is the lack of political activity on the part of the majority black population in ferguson. no sense of political urgency she said. but a woeful sense of complacency. now it does seem to an outsider looking forward and backward, that complacency, that disinclination towards political engagement is a huge problem in ferguson and elsewhere. the grand jury decision on the cop who killed michael brown, whatever it is, will probably be met with anger and disappointment by one faction or the other and may once again be expressed in the streets. but, that's not where they're going to find solutions there. solutions will be worked out in church basements, living rooms, government offices, not by protesters, but by progressive politicians, preachers, housewives and handymen.
10:27 am
good people who are willing to organize prioritize, strategize, good people who recognize the value of marching and protesting, but who realize the greater good that comes from mapping and planning. those are the folks that should be welcomed in ferguson these days. like the man said, all the others need to go home. >> nothing else to say after that. right? >> says go home we leave the building. >> that's it for "news 4 today." "meet the press" is coming up next. >> wake up with us at monday morning we begin at 4:26 a.m. until then have a great sunday.
