left hip as he did right after he went down. they're working on peerman who has carried the load here in the second half. coming up at 11:30 p.m. eastern time on nbc sn tonight it's the "sunday sports report" very latest on what's been happening around the nfl, impact of today's california earthquake on local sports in that area, did play the 49er/charger game this afternoon at the 49ers new facilities about some 80 or so miles away from the epicenter. meanwhile, peerman is able to walk off and there is devon still. we talked about him. we talked about the tre vails of devon still and all the very best to him.
11:01 pm
>> cris: can't even imagine. >> al: so peerman able to walk off under his own power. it's a first down after the 37 yard gain. the ball is at the 35 yard line. campbell running around, throws, the pass is incomplete, intended for jeremy hill. so cris, you asked me before what the odds were in my mind of arizona getting to the super bowl, i threw out a number. so what would be the odds in your mind of cincinnati getting to the super bowl, not winning, getting to the super bowl. >> cris: getting to the super bowl i would say about 20-1. >> al: according to george hill, who knows people all around the country. >> cris: he knows people. >> al: he knows people who know
11:02 pm
people, 37-1 to get there. >> cris: roeally? >> al: excuse me, 14-1 to get there. 37-1 to win the super bowl. pretty good guess. second and ten. and that pass is caught by kevin bride. it would end the longest current drought trying to win a playoff game for the first time since 1990. so i said the cardinals were 16 1/2-1, they're actually 28-1 to make it to the super bowl, 60-1 to make it. >> cris: really? >> al: again, george hill knows people who knows people. >> cris: if george says it's so then i'm going with it. >> al: third and nine now from the 34 yard line. and campbell is going to take a time-out. here is a good little quiz for you. andy dalton, bengals quarterback, his first three years in the league and there's
11:03 pm
a guy on the right, we'll ask you to figure out who this is. look at this, first three years, same number starts the other guy started every game his first three years, wins very close, tds very close, passer rating almost the same, so who do you think the other guy would be. >> cris: well, because i was in the same meeting you were in i know. >> al: i know. i didn't mean who you thought, i mean you out there. those of you out of state, who do you think? >> cris: okay. >> al: we'll give you the answer in a minute. there will be a door prize as well. third down and nine with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter. bengals five wide and the pass is a little under thrown but coming back to make the catch at
11:04 pm
24 even though the cardinals say no is colin lockette, official comes in to say yes. >> cris: boy, jason campbell got his arm hit, just as that ball was thrown and that ball is on the ground. that ball is an incomplete pass. >> al: they don't get it off so we'll have a little challenge here. >> referee: arizona is challenging the ruling on the field that the pass wu incomplete. >> al: and they'll win it. >> cris: this will be interesting. i bet you this challenge takes not very long at all because now new york is going to take a look at it. dean blandino is going to see the back end of this ball. >> al: right. >> cris: he is going to say, just tell him let's go back and play football. >> al: there's no reason this shouldn't be overturned in about four seconds. >> cris: let's clock it under
11:05 pm
the hood. >> al: in the meantime to keep you entertained and informed, which is our job they tell us, the other guy would be -- and look at the post season by the way, yep, mr. peyton manning. first three years in indianapolis, got them to the playoffs twice, 0- 2. andy has gotten them there three times, 0-3. but the numbers are remarkably similar. >> cris: people get frustrated ba they haven't won a playoff game, but they haven't been to any playoff games. as my friend terry bradshaw used to say, he's just a young-en. >> referee: after reviewing the play, ball hit the ground it's an incomplete pass. ball will be placed at the 34 yard line.
11:06 pm
it is fourth down. arizona has used their final and second challenge. they're ouof challenges. >> cris: i think marvin was over there. he wasn't frustrated at the call. he's frustrated his offense didn't get up there fast enough to get the play off. >> al: missed it by about a second. >> cris: uh-huh. >> al: so a 52 yard field goal attempt is forthcoming by one quinn sharp. mike nugent is their kicker. would be a major upset if sharp wound up with the job. it would be 51 yards officially and the kick is good, just inside that left up right. >> cris: boy, that feels good. talking about the weight of the world as a backup kicker. you only get a couple of opportunities. and that was a bomb. he hit that a long way.
11:07 pm
>> al: 19-13, 5:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. university of phoenix stadium. >> cris: i think there might be little bit more of a buzz here about the 1st of february or so when we're back here? >> al: 5.7%. >> cris: yep. >> al: will the roof be opened? well, they played one super bowl here. that was the giants/patriots spoiling of the perfect season. and of course the play that everybody will forever remember as the david tyree ball pinned against the helmet catch leading to the plaxico burress touchdown catch and there went the perfect season for new england. >> cris: that was some game. hope we get one just like that it. >> al: that would be nice. or one where you look at larry
11:08 pm
fitzgerald, that wouldn't be bad either, that arizona/pittsburgh game after the '08 campaign. four yards into the end zone, powell will run it back, not very far, slips and falls at the 16. >> michele: i'm with andrew whitworth who is a big fan of andy dalton. he said what makes him special is his character. physically what are his gifts that are paying off right now. >> really a couple things for him. he is really a patient quarterback. he understands the game. his knowledge is unbelievable. even as a rookie, he was good at being able to put us in the right situation. that's one of his greatest talents. the patience he has and his stubbornness. all the people around the country who tells him he's not good, he still remains the same. we talked about the offense last night. we wanted the game where it didn't all work out perfect. and tonight it didn't. they brought a lot of pressure
11:09 pm
and really came on with blitzes and got us off kilter and we came back from our own end zone and drove all the way down the field and scored some points. that's a good thing. that's what you want to do, bounce back. >> michele: you're a leader on this team, the question about the playoffs. you've got therein three-straight times. haven't been able to win. it's been a long drought for the bengals. how does that change this year? >> playing better and finding a way to win and working harder. you see it every year in the playoffs. not necessarily the team that was the highest rated or had the best stats, it's the team that makes the huge plays, just has some kind of special will to win. that's what it will take for us, a special will to win. we have a long way to get there but we have the right guys to do it. >> michele: you need a healthy geno atkins. how is he coming along back from injury? >> he has special things. his power and his strength and speed is reay special. from the day he was a rook kirks
11:10 pm
i could tell he was going to be special. we need him back. we need him full strength. he sets the tone for our defense. and it will be important for us to stay healthy. we've seen the last couple years, one guy you can lose can make a big deal. >> michele: andrew, thank you. >> thank you all so much. >> al: thank you, michele. the swing pass taken by parmalee. >> cris: one thing about andrew whitworth that i really admire, he is a leader and all that sort of stuff, but last year they really needed him to move to guard and it probably hurt his chances to go back to the pro bowl because he had been there as a tackle, but he knew it was in the best interest of the team. he went and played right guard, let anthony collins come in and play left tackle. that's what leadership really is. making sacrifices for the betterment of the team and he showed that last year. >> al: third and eight, thomas
11:11 pm
on the run and skips one incomplete to make it fourth down. >> cris: this is to that point in the game it gets to be a little dangerous to play quarterback because defensive coordinators always want to dial up a few blitzes and take a few shots and what difference does it make. quarterbacks are usually undersiege at this point. >> al: zastudil punts. collins collects it at the 41 and down he goes at the 43 yard line. >> cris: we talked about what a big hitter deone bucannon is a little bit tonight. coming up and making a good tackle on the outside. here he is coming off the edge on a blitz. that's the kind of player he's going to be. he'll be down in that box. he'll be playing a lot of
11:12 pm
linebacker in the nickel situations. you'll really see him this year lined up all over the place. then when tyronn matthew comes back, it will be a very dynamic group in the secondary. >> al: now that hays is pointing out to me, he was a high school letterman in golf. >> cris: deone? >> al: yeah. >> cris: how about that? >> al: we are deep in the well at the moment. jeremy hill takes the ball out to the 47 yard line. matthew is the great-looking safety. here is working out before the game. still has the brace on the left knee. was hoping to play tonight but getting ready to hopefully play on opening day is t.j. johnson is the injured cincinnati bengal. >> cris: that young man, of
11:13 pm
course, well chronicled. had to sit out a year at lsu. drafted in the third round. to watch what he can do, it's a new breed of safety. yeah, they can play back and play the middle of the field. yeah, they can come down and make big tackles, but he essentially was their slot corner. he would come down and play man-to-man coverage against wide receivers in the slot and that was you just don't see many like him. you know, it's pretty special player. hope he comes back real soon. >> al: the injured player, t.j. johnson, first year player out of south carolina, drafted in the seventh round last year. so the bengals with three injuries of significance here in the fourth quarter. >> cris: right here.
11:14 pm
t.j. johnson. and i think deone bucannon right there on the back of his knee. you just see it. it's a hustle play by bucannon. t.j. johnson in so way able to protect himself in this situation. >> al: unfortunately for the third time in this fourth quarter, marvin lewis has watched a cart come out to take one of his guys back to the locker room. >> cris: always a fine line, isn't it, al, you want to get your team ready but you're trying to get to opening day as healthy as you possibly can. it's the reason you won't see any of the starters playing in that fourth preseason game. >> al: go ask jeff fisher about that today, huh? >> cris: sick for sam bradford. >> al: rams' coach losing bradford for the season. >> cris: it was interesting talking to carson palmer about bruce arians. he said it was a culture shock around here when bruce arians
11:15 pm
came in. you know, ken whisenhunt, we all had great relationships with him. but with bruce, he's a grinder. it's his way or the highway and guys didn't really want to hear it in the beginning. by the time they started buying in, what they win 7 of the last 9, something like that, went on a great roll at the end of the season, beat seattle in seattle and he is not afraid. he said there's a big difference between criticism and coaching. i coach. they took it as criticism. >> al: get a full back. second and four. fighting his way for a first down is jeremy hill. cincinnati, one thing about their schedule when you look at it. is they have to get off to a good start and have a good first half of the season. they'll open up at baltimore. the bye week comes early.
11:16 pm
the key thing on their schedule, five of the last seven games are on the road. so a lot of home games early and lot of road games late. there it is and they'll end the season in pittsburgh. their home games, two of those five will be pittsburgh and denver. nice hole here. there goes hill for a first down. stays in bounds to keep the clock rolling along as we'll go to the two-minute warning. so cincinnati on the move, chewing up the clock with two minutes to go, it's the bengals leading arizona. 19-13 on "sunday night football."
11:18 pm
11:19 pm
meanwhile, we're waiting all day for thursday night. >> cris: we get the doubleheader, don't we? that's going to be great. >> al: green bay/seattle in the opener and then indy/denver on sunday. flag is thrown. jeremy hill has had a big workload tonight. gotten a good look at him, nine carries for 53 yards. >> referee: illegal formation, offense, they appeared in an illegal formation prior to the snap. five-yard penalty, still first down. >> al: whatever. it's a mirage, they appeared in one. what you see is not always what you get, you know? >> cris: limitations is almost up on this guy. >> al: yes, it is.
11:20 pm
first and 15 from the 33. >> cris: that's right. >> al: gang tag tackled. martin is there. the ball comes out but after the play was over. it will be second down. >> cris: martin is a guy drafted in the third round. he may be a major factor this season right here taking over at least in part for darnell docket. they need his speed and quickness. that ability to get into the back field both in the run and pass game. could come into play for this team. nice to have a couple of splash plays when you're trying to make an impression. >> al: arizona has used its last time-out. there's the young gm who has done sauuch a great job here, steve keim.
11:21 pm
long-time scout, they elevated from within. last year he made over 19 transactions. he was making one every other day and he'll make a few this week, too. >> cris: keep an eye on this arizona football team, they'll be tough. >> al: second and 19. they'll chew up some clock here because arizona does not have a time-out. bucannon coming in to make the tackle and the clock will tick down to close to a minute before the next snap. >> cris: well, deone bucannon right here going to come up and shoot the gap. you'll see him in this role quite a bit this season. he'll be right around the line of scrimmage. if you think you'll send in a young receiver in to block him, you can forget thatch. >> al: third down and 19. just run it. keep the clock going because
11:22 pm
arizona can't stop it. that's exactly what they will do it. jeremy hill takes it right there. little scuffle. that will take us down to the 20-second mark before they have to snap it again. >> cris: there is the young rookie, russell bodine. antonio cromartie. this is when it starts getting ugly in the nfl. all those coaches dread that day, have to make cut to 75. maybe that one is not quite so bad. the last one to 53, your coaches used to come back in and say, listen, don't mess with us today. we're all in a bad mood, we all had bad days, get away from us today. >> al: i think hard knocks makes people really understand how
11:23 pm
hard that is, to watch it. >> cris: it's awful on the coaches, too. >> al: one thing to hear about it and then you get to see it. >> cris: sam white spared me when he cut me, called me on the phone. i was appreciative, too. >> al: 1989? >> cris: that was it. >> al: let it be known the last game that cris collinsworth ever played in was the super bowl. >> cris: that's a pleasant memory. >> al: thank you joe montana. >> cris: john taylor, jerry rice. >> al: that punt will bound into the end zone, so at the 20 yard line it's a last gas for the arizona cardinals with ten seconds remaining in the game. >> cris: now if you're bruce arians, do you give up whatever
11:24 pm
your end of game play is or do you just say all right, i'm not showing that one, i may show something else here? >> al: i don't think you show anything. neither of the team really showed that much. >> cris: if i know bruce, he'll do something. >> al: and then go for two. >> cris: and then go for two, yeah. >> al: he better. >> cris: he'll have to go for one. >> al: that's right. of course. i'll be right with you after these words. the pass is incomplete. just trying to do a little math here. >> cris: kelly hayes waiving you off. >> al: no goal. larry fitzgerald, i love watching him play. guy through the years who just
11:25 pm
hasn't gotten that much national exposure but could very wiennd in canton, ohio. >> cris: how about him last year? >> al: barring a defensive penalty this will end it and it's an interception that will end the game at the 29 yard line, picked off there by the bengals and that will do it. sean porter with the interception. that will do it for tonight's game from glendale, arizona. our next action is a week from thursday when the season opens up in seattle, green bay against the super bowl champion seahawks. until then, our entire crew saying good night from glendale, saying good night from glendale, arizona. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com >> announcer: nbc sports, home of super bowl iv thanks you for watching this presentation of the national football league.

discovery outside an apartment complex in maryland. police find a man's body stuffed in not one, but two bags. there is real concern more body parts could be scattered across our area. we have new details from laurel. >> i was planning to go to you church. and police have it cordoned off. >> reporter: this couple asked me not to use their names because they're scared. >> we got to go. this is unacceptable. there's already a lot of minor issues, parking, petty thefts, robbery. but this is on another level. >> reporter: this morning, a neighbor called police after they found a trash bag not far from the pool. inside, a chopped up body, later identified as an adult male. >> where the remains were found, he wanted somebody to find that. you know, it wasn't tucked away. >> reporter: as police arrived,
11:30 pm
the crime scene grew, building 8807, the pool area, and this back dumpster where you can see police cadets sifting through bags became areas of interest. the victim hasn't been i.d.ed and it's wide open. neighbors were robbed of a quiet sunday. the community is made up of hundreds of garden-style apartments. the people i talked to described themselves as hardworking, saving for houses. they were fathers, parents, scared that a killer is on the loose. you don't feel safe here? >> not at all, not with a 2 and a 3-year-old. >> reporter: some planned on coming here to the pool for one of the last nice weekends of the summer. but it didn't happen because this whole community turned into a crime scene. the police will be back here in the morning trying to piece this

together. we're here in laurel after two bags were found with human remains in this otherwise quiet communit community. police divers pulled a person's body out of a car that ended up in the potomac river. they haven't said who it is, but tour boat operators saw the car sinking into the water and the silhouette of someone inside. divers got there quickly, but it was too late. this happened close to the d.c./virginia line. the closest road is the g.w. parkway, but there's a bike path and a row of trees between that road and the river. police are trying to figure out what caused a crash in jer map town that killed a biker and sent someone else to the hospital. teams have been reconstructing the crash all evening. we know another vehicle overturned and someone inside had to go to the hospital, but there's no word yet about how it happened or the name of the person on that motorcycle.
11:32 pm
also new at 11:00, some incredible video of what could have been a rannic accident. beverly simmons came home tonight to find part of an airplane had crashed through her ceiling. a piece of the plane landed right in her dining room and left pieces of try wall and insulation all over the place. it turns out, beverly's usually at home with her family on sunday nights. tonight she was at a church retreat. >> i was, i was in absolute shock that this happened, but i just said thank god i wasn't here. you know, thank god we wasn't at home. >> she doesn't know if the piece came off a plane from a nearby local airport or bwi marshal, but the faa is coming to her house to investigate. a lot of local families got stuck in this mess earlier, a crash on the west side of the bay bridge backed up traffic and just as hundreds of families were coming home from the beach.
11:33 pm
the crash blocked several lanes of traffic but tonight things are back to normal. the first day of school tomorrow will be a somber one after a student from our area died today. he was supposed to start class in baltimore. he died two weeks after he practiced and collapsed on the football field. we are watching developments out of napa valley after it was hit by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake. right now, the concern is about aftershocks. and those could continue for several weeks. the quake hit while most people were sleeping and sent dozens of people to the hospital, mostly with cuts and bruises from things falling on them. gas lines ruptured, igniting pires that destroyed homes. and some roads leading to napa's famous wineries have been damaged. i've got to imagine there is a lot of cleaning up to do out there. >> reporter: yes, absolutely.
11:34 pm
and people haven't even begun to start wret. because take a look at this area where we are for example. this is historic. downtown napa, and these buildings are so old they have to assess what can be saved before they start even going in there to try to fix it. now this is just one of several areas here in the downtown area that have sustained this type of damage. and you seal all the brick that's come crashing down to the ground. can you mablg what would have happened if people were not sleeping when this occurred? it struck at 3:20 in the morning, and a good thing, too. contents of grocery store shelves fell on floors instead of people. panic was contained mostly inside of homes and not on the streets or freeways. >> i've been a lifetime resident of california, and it was a serious rocker. >> reporter: about 200 were treated at hospitals, mostly cuts and bruises. >> very early we had a big wave
11:35 pm
of people with bumps and bruises and lacerations. they were related to folks getting out of bed and walking on things that had broken at night. >> reporter: but three were critical, including a child who was struck by a falling chimney. four mobile homes burnt to the ground and firefighters couldn't do much about it because of a water main break. one of 60 in the areas. several historic buildings were red tagged. >> i started shouting for my wife's name. she was all right. >> reporter: it was centered between napa and american canyon but was felt as par south as santa cruz which was the epicenter of the 1989 loma prieta quake. up to 70,000 homes were without power, but most have been restored. and so far there have been about 60 aftershocks. there are no reports of major taj to roads and bridges. now here's a
