we're live with what you need to know about the new school year as tens of thousands head back to class this morning. we will interview the superintendent of montgomery county schools in just a minute about technology changes coming this year. >> the summer goes by fast. and things have cooled off dramatically for your kids as they step out the door this morning. >> let's get right to tom kierein with that back to school forecast. >> yeah, feeling more like fall than late summer this morning. our temperatures are down to just near 60 degrees. getting reports here in the storm team 4 "weather center" of patchy dense fog, as well in some of the rural areas. right now it's only the upper 50s to near 60. loudoun, montgomery, frederick. warri rington dowto just 55. prince george's county, only around 60. so you need long sleeves at the bus stop this morning. we will have our sunrise another

half an hour. watch out for the rural fog through 8:00, 9:00 this morning. there is the pre-dawn glow over washington now. bus stop forecast, we'll have patchy dog around through now and 8:00, in the low 60s. by recess time, mid-70s with bright sunshine. and did dismissal time, in the low 80s. so quite a dramatic change from this morning with low humidity and lots of sun. delightful late summer feeling to the air and it feels like fall now. and now let's check on traffic this morning. things beginning to slow down? good morning. hearing about some complaints about about some restriping that was done over the weekend that perhaps is not completely lining up right. that is from drivers 66 at lee highway. that is where chopper 4 is. as it gets lighter, we'll see perhaps what they are talking about. prince george's county side of the roadways, looking good. no problems will.

hod earn schoo modscin the system. and it sets the stage for the new technology in the classroom. joining me now is the superintendent, joshua starr. thank you so much. >> good morning. thanks for having me. >> reporter: how are you feeling about the start of school in the system? >> i'm feeling great. everybody is thrilled to have the kids back. we have 154,000 kids coming out, 2800 more than last year. and we're ready to go. >> let's talk about the new student enrollment numbers just continuing to go up. >> every year we keep going up. more kids coming to montgomery county, more kids being born and we're thrilled to have them in in our system. >> what did you have to do to prepare? >> we just built or 202nd school, we'll be there later today. we're expanding schools. we have of course portables. we are bursting at the seam. but we're also ready and we have safe classrooms for everyone. >> so technology in the classroom.

the 18-year-old was unarmed when he was shot on you go a 9 by a ferguson, missouri police officer. a federal investigation into his death is under way right now. during today's service, as many as 4,000 people will remember him as a teen eager to start college. three white house leaders being sent to that funeral, as well, including one who went to high school with brown's mother. the service starts at 11:00 a.m.. protesters have taken to the streets of course drawing national attention on issues surrounding race and policing. now to a developing story in southern california. a state of emergency is still in effect after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit early yesterday morning. aftershocks are expected to hit for weeks. the earthquake triggered half a dozen fires and run dhptured ga lines and water mains. no one killed, but more than 200 people were hurt. the epicenter was just six miles away from napa. this is the biggest earthquake to hit san francisco bay area

welcome back. a lot of kids are waking up as they head back to school. you're looking live at walter johnson high school where kids will begin arriving within the next hour. along with montgomery county schools, howard, anne arundel and charles county all back in session this morning. good luck today. we're sure you're excited for your kids to head back to school today. a lot of help will start classes in the next hour or so. dunbar high school in d.c., kristen wright joins us live. and those kids will staying a bit later, too. >> reporter: and your child may be one of the ones spending have a time at schools this school year. in fact 26 schools in d.c. ps will have longer school days starting this year. now, we discussed this with the chancellor kaya henderson.

d.c. ps tried it out at a handful of it lowest performing schools last year and decided that it worked at improving test scores. >> those teachers have been planning all summer to ensure that this extra time is not wasted time. but is really enriching time. and we have highlighted the extended school day at a number of our schools and seen tremendous results. so i'm excited about that. >> reporter: now, in the next half hour here, chancellor henderson promised to parents and students on this first day of school. live in northwest, kristen wright, news 4. and some kids aren't back in school yet. they will meet an nfl player today. desean jackson will host the d jack backpack give away tonight. 250 boys and girls will receive new backpacks and school

ready to release that militant's nail. isis claims it executed foley last week in retaliation for u.s. air strikes in iraq. yesterday hundreds of people tappeded a special mass in foley's hometown in new hampshire. the pope extended his condolences. >> can you imagine how shocked you would be if something came into your house like part of a plane? that is what happened at a home in bowie. beverly sim smons says she came home to find a piece of a plane in her dining room. turns out simmons is usually at home with her family on sunday nights. last night she was at a church retreat. >> i was shocked. i was in absolute shock that this happened. but i just said thank god i wasn't here. you know, thank god we wasn't at home. >> nobody was hurt here. the faa thousa achla now invest. a traffic alert could make

weekend. hot temperatures during the afternoons. next chance evof storms on frid and again into labor day. there is a new theory about parenting methods that might raise some eyebrows. it's called snowplow parents. it's where you clear every obstacle and pile on the pressure to achieve. it's just as bad as hovering. they say it can lead kids anxious, dependent and narcicisstic. he says micro managing children can also leave them unable to cope in the real world. is it ma it makes a lot of accepts. our job as parents is to create individual human beings that can make smart decisions on your own, but it's hard not to intervene when you feel like they need help.

>> you have to let them stumble and fall and pick themselves up. cut the cord. >> if your kids are enjoying back to school this morning, talking about cutting the cord, you might be see something tired faces. >> a good chance they might be a little grumpy, too. doctors say not getting enough sleep can impact them mentally, emotionally and physically. >> doctors tell us children are biologically programmed to sleep between certain hours. but with schools starting so early, children are missing that window and that can affect their grades and mental health. >> kids at my school, i mean, you notice first thing in the morning, nobody wants to talk to each other. everybody is half awake. they just want to with an dear through the you hallway like zombies. >> reporter: did doctors say that's not surprise. studies show between 70% and 85%

are chronically getting too little sleep. that means less than seven hours each might when they really need at least nine hours. >> when we don't sleep well, or when our sleep is deprived, recent science shows that parts of the brain actually go to sleep during the day to catch up during the day. >> reporter: dr. daniel is a sleep specialist. he says that reaction in the brain can cause lapses in attention, poor judgment, aggression, and depression. and that can affect a child's learning and social behavior. >> one of the issues with sleep time is simply that kids' lives are so full. there is so much to do. particularly the adolescents. school pressure, social pressure, sports. >> reporter: he says early school start times are also to blame. that is because the biological clocks offed a lessed a less events are naturally programmed to sleep between 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., but a lot of high schools start before 7:30 in the

back here. classes start at 7:25. first bell will ring at 7:20 on a brand new school year here in montgomery county. some 154,000 students in the system. here at walter johnson high, the wildcats, there are 2200 students who will be coming back today. this school is big. it's modern, sets the stage perfectly for what is to come this entire school year. technology in the classroom, rolling it out in phases. the goal is 40,000 computers, laptop, tablets. but right now, 12,000 of them in third, fifth and 6sixth grade. and we just spoke with joshua starr about what all of this means for learning. >> it will enable our kids to collaborate online. teachers can collaborate online, as well. we also know they will be able

to access different kinds of information and just we know the technology engages our kids in different ways and we're thrilled that we're able to provide this to our kids. >> reporter: a lot going on this school year in montgomery county. 2900 new students. mostly elementary. they have had to roll out portable classrooms to accommodate all of them. we're live in bethesda. i'm molette green. back to you. this morning police will be out and ready to ticket drivers for passing school buses. in montgomery county, if you pass a bus with an activated stop sign like the one you see here with the flashing red light, it will cost you $570. and also three points on your license. if one of the new bus cameras catch you, it's $125 for the fine and no points on your license. some of us here at you news 4 went back to school at one point in time. this is one of our reporters. any guesses? not a red head anymore. is th this is megan mcgrath this

here. early this morning, police say a man walked this with a gun. he demanded money. the money was turned over. no one injured. all of it confined to the lobby of the hotel. likely the guests didn't even realize and maybe still don't even know the hotel was robbed overnight. police are going through any critical evidence that they can collect here from the lobby, talking with the hotel staff. also looking at any video available to them. but again, he got away with an undisclosed amount of money. no one was hurt. but a robbery at will this hotel very early this morning. reporting live in falls church, richard jordan, news 4. d.c. police are asking for your help to solve a series of sex assaults.

a man groped a woman along kenyon street, second attack on oat street when a man held you a woman up with a knife. and another one along park road. police are offering up to a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest. today a ban on magic arts and fortune telling will enter a new chapter in front royal. town co they will take seot th the issue has people divided. those in favor of reversing that ban say freedom of religion is at stake. some residents fear that repealing the ban could bring crime. the meeting at the warren county government center at 7:00 p.m.. a developing story in california after a strong earthquake hits the state. the problems people are wake up to there. chilly start, cool start we should say for a lot of folks. don't get used to it, though.

we're working to get you up to the minute the meant you'inute . >> we start with kristen wright. >> reporter: among many of pressing issues, we sat down with kaya henderson and we asked her one very important question and she gave us a somewhat personal response. we sat down with chancellor henderson at capitol hill montessori school at logan in northeast. henderson told us back to school is her favorite time of the year besides christmas. we sat down one-on-one so that we could discuss the most important issues on the minds of d.c. ps families and ask the really important questions. our first to her, what is her promise to parents and students. >> my promise to parents is that i want the very best for my child. i want them to have opportunities for rich academic

the white house at 8:00 tonight to draw attention to michael brown's funeral. yes supporters in rockville showed their support for brown's family. the naacp joined local faith based groups for a prayer vigil and prayed for healing in the ferguson community. right now police in prince george's county are looking for this man. he is suspected of shooting and killing a man in oxon hill. 36-year-old antjuon riddick is accused of murdering kenneth jones saturday night on glassmanor drive. police aren't saying what led to the shooting, but they believe the suspect and victim knew each other. people in california still assessing the damage from a 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck in the heart of the wine country. angie goff has more on the cleanup effort from the live desk. >> we still have aftershocks still going on. crews assessing the damage as

you mentioned from fires and buildings rattled by the quake. a look at the destruction there. this napa, 90 to 100 homes are uninhabitable. no deaths, but more than 200 were hurt. a state of emergency is still in effect for the area. and we are hearing that aftershocks are expected to continue for weeks. eun. >> angie, thank you. forget about weather or traffic scrams. apparently the real headache is the quickly growing list of hotel surcharges even for items you'll never use. a study out of new york says hotels will take in a record $2.25 billion this year in revenue. and some of that money is from new surcharges and hotels increasing the amount of existing fees like guaranteeing two queen beds, checking in early are or checking out late. you probably are still paying for an in-room safe whether you use it or not. and if you want to avoid some of these fee, check the fine police department before you you check
