fix could be an impact on tomorrow morning's commute. students work through crime scene tape on the first day of school. take a look at i-66 in centreville, virginia, tonight. vdot crews working quickly to fix a problem that created big back-ups during the morning commute. >> brand-new stripes laid down last week tailed off the road and are being replaced tonight. but that means one eastbound lane of 66 will be closed approaching route 29 until tomorrow morning. >> shomari stone is live where this caused a real problem for drivers. are they fixing it? >> reporter: they're trying to. one driver described it as spaghetti noodles. he was trying to get to work and all of a sudden he sa. vdot crews are determined to figure out why this happened and

want to make sure it doesn't happen again. tonight, vdot crews are doing a do-over as they fix temporary lane strips on i-66 eastbound in centreville, virginia. chopper 4 captured the commute confusion this morning. what was the traffic like? >> the traffic was terrible. >> reporter: mickey and thousands drove through these wiggly lines like an obstacle course. this is what drivers experienced. the tape stripping peeled off during the morning rush. >> today was very, very ba iwacry. you couldn't get where you wanted to go. >> reporter: tonight, two lanes and the shoulder are closed. >> really hope they fix it overnight. >> reporter: right now, i want to bring you closer and show you this temporary stripping. you can see it right here. a vdot officials tell me they're trying to figure out why it peeled. while they replacedis, mickey

hopes it sticks or he'll stick to side streets. >> if i have to bail out and take the back roads to get to work on time, i will. >> reporter: vdot says crews will be out until 5:00 tomorrow morning. you can wake up, watch nbc 4 today to find out the latest on this traffic mess out here. live near centreville, shomari stone, news 4. a manhunt is under way for a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous. the scene on dale boulevard, a victim was shot in the face and had to be flown to a local hospital. the suspect took off and carjacked the second victim to get away. k-9s were sent in to help search but so far, nobody's been arrested. a disturbing scene for parents picking up their kids from school. two teenagers were stabbed just a few feet away from coolidge

high school near fifth and somerset place northwest. they were not students. but that is little comfort to parents at the high school and at the elementary school just down the street. jackie bensen now with the latest on this investigaon. >> reporter: you could see it on the faces of the teachers and and the administrators who came out to see what was going on. it was most definitely not the scene parents and educators wants students to see as they left coolidge high school on the first day of classes. >> did they get shot? >> this is unacceptable. it should start at home with some home training. >> reporter: d.c. police were called to somerset place just across from the high school around 3:30 and found two young men, ages 17 and 19, with nonlife-threatening stab wounds. a d.c. public school spokesperson says the two are not college students. sources tell news 4 the two teens initially refused to answer officers' questions about

what led to the stabbing. parents bringing younger children home from school expressed frustration. >> you want your child to be safe, you want your child to be in school. but how can you do that when things like this are going on? >> reporter: there are reports there was some type of fight just before the stabbings. live in northwest, jackie bensen, news 4. classes start tomorrow in prince george's county after a full day of orientation today. the kids were there to meet their teachers and get to know more about the schools. we invitt you to watch news 4 today in the morning for school traffic and hear from prince george's county school chief kevin maxwell. a question from the judge to wrap up court action today. the judge asked the prosecutor whether he was anywhere near finished. the answer was no. former virginia governor bomb mcdonnell will be back on the stand tomorrow facing

cross-examination. he and his wife, maureen, are accused of providing special favors for a business ceo in exchange for $165,000 in gifts and loans. the mcdonnells say they couldn't have conspired to help johnny williams because they were barely speaking due to marriage problems. today the prosecutor noted they had been on vacation together nearly every month for two years during that time. officials will not release the name of the soldier who shot and killed herself at fort lee in virginia. they won't do that until 24 hours after notifying her family. no word if that has happened yet. fort lee is 30 miles south of richmond. the base went on lockdown this morning after the soldier barricaded herself in an office building. the army says she was a sergeant first class who had served for 14 years. nobody else was injured. if the white house calls for military action in syria, virginia senator tim kaine says

it should be put to a vote in congress. he says he wants the goals of the mission set out for lawmakers. "the new york times" is reporting tonight that president obama has already authorized surveillance flights over syria has a prelude to air strikes against isis. the white house is not commenting. there's more pressure tonight on people to make cell phones to protect customers with something called a kill switch which can render a slephe useless. it will be required on all phones sold in california by july 1st of next year. california's governor signed the bill into law to "consumer reports" says there were 3.2 million thefts of smartphones in the u.s. last year. that's nearly double the number in 2012. in montgomery county, a stand-off between homeowners and pepco. pepco's been cutting down trees near high tension lines and homeowners say it's killing their property values and they got a restraining order to force

pepco to stop. new tonight, darcy spencer shows us the before and after. >> you can see this is all -- >> reporter: jake liang shows us the beautiful trees that line the fence in his backyard in potomac, trees that pepco wants to cut down. >> these are mature trees and they're pretty healthy and they say they're going to remove them because it could potentially interfere with the power lines. >> reporter: the trees block the view of the unsightly power lines behind the homes here in the potomac crest neighborhood. these pictures show a yard with the trees, then after they were cut, a very different view. >> they basically just say, it's all right, we can do it at our discretion. >> reporter: pepco said in a statement that in 1959, the utility bought the right to cut down trees on portions of what is now potomac crest to protect the power lines. it says cutting the trees is critical to providing reliable electricity. some of the neighbors here too

many pepco to court, got a temporary restraining order. liang says when the tree cutters were in his yard today, he called the cops. when the police left, they started to cut again. so he took desperate action. >> you going to cut my trees, i'm going to stand here. you risk injuring me, go ahead. but i'm not leaving. >> reporter: residents say it should be a wake-up call who anyone who owns property here in montgomery county. can the utility company come in your yard, mark your trees and cut them down? they say they were not aware of pepco's purchase decades ago. >> the documents don't say anything about, oh, by the way, pepco can do it at their own discretion and chop down your trees. call for action from the reverend al sharpton who delivered the eulogy at michael brown's funeral today. he was among the thousands of mourners who gathered in st. louis to remember the 18-year-old. brown's shooting death at the hands of a ferguson police officer sparked protests across the country.

brown's family asked for silence and peace tonight in their son's memory. a legal defense fund for the officer who shot brown has already raised more than $250,000. tonight some of the officers from a police department here in maryland are expressing some surprise and outrage over the donation from their police union. in a letter to the county's fraternal order of police, a group of african-american officers called the donation to him noble. they also said, this situation has the chance to get worse if it's discovered that officer wilson acted improperly. the bottom line is, we don't know what happened. now to a live look backstage at the emmys. the show just wrapped up. how stars are reacting to the

the cast and crew from "breaking bad" and "modern family" still answering questions and celebrating their wins. the "breaking bad" show swept the emmy awards tonight. >> not only did it win for outstanding drama series, the show also won for best actor, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. the outstanding comedy series went to "modern family". >> there was a touching tribute to robin williams during tonight's broadca. the late actor tragically took his own life earlier this month. billy crystal called him the brightest sta >> because they float in the heavens so far away from us now, their beautiful light will continue to shine on us forever and the glow will be so bright, it will warm your heart, it will make your eyes glisten and you'll think to yourselves, robin williams, what a concept.

is facing a lawsuit from the competition. maryland live says its former employee stole a confidential list of high rollers. according to court documents, wang e-mailed that list to promote tomorrow's grand opening at her new job. a judge has issued a temporary restraining order against her. she's do back in court on friday. the casino wasn't included in the lawsuit. up in massachusetts today, everybody out of the water because of that. a great white spotted off the coast. a state police helicopter saw the shark while on routine patrol. the shark was a good ways out. so far that it couldn't be seen from the beach. somebody had a sense of humor there. we're going to need a bigger boat. but one beachgoer wrote that line from "jaws." swimmers were allowed in the water after about an hour. >> i didn't see a lot of people swimming, did you? >> it was only a little guy.

towards chicago. but that system is diving down toward the south. not going to see any rain out of that one. the next best chance for rain, possibly wednesday or thursday. but not that big. tropical storm cristobal is now a hurricane. the air force hurricane hunters found hurricane force winds off the coast of miami. it's well off the coast. it really did flare up over the last few hours. but it's moving out toea. the latest advisory of 11:00, winds, now 75 miles an hour. moving north-northeast at 2 miles per hour. so it's not moving very fast. it is expected to remain a hurricane potentially just to the west of bermuda and well off the coast of the east coast. so we're not worried about anything here. once again, just like bertha, however, we could see very strong rip currents along the coast. so heads up for those if you're thinking about going to the beach between now and saturday or sunday. tomorrow morning, clear skies. nice and cool. 53 to 63 degrees. light wind. tomorrow morning will be a very nice start to our tuesday.

going to philly tonight, we know the nats have lost just one game in the last ten. the hottest team in baseball. but to be successful in the game, you have to have a short memory. tonight the bubble burst and washington was slowed down by the phillies. matt williams is ready for game one of a nine-game road trip. hoping to stay red hot. a.j. burnett, top three, man on for denard span, goes down swinging. 12 strikeouts and one run allowed in seven innings for burnett. bottom seven, phils up 2-1. carlos ruiz gets all of this one. bryce harper back on this one but harp doesn't make the play. solo shot. phillies take a 3-1 lead. but then we learn, never count the nats out. wilson ramos drills this one. it's out of there. nats within a run now. man on for the new guy, nate
