bright sunshine, sunrise at 6:32. a little bit of fog in the rural areas but not as widespread or dense yesterday. then between 8:00 and 10:00, temperatures jump into the 60s to near 70. you need your shades with bright sunshine and a light wind during the afternoon. then hour-by-hour for the rest of the day, we'll have temperatures jumping to the low 80s by noontime. mid-80s and upper 80s by mid to late afternoon. bright and sunny with low humidity. your back-to-school forecast in the next weather and traffic on the 1s coming up at 6:11. aaron? thank you. we have an update on a traffic alert for drivers in fairfax county. 90 minutes ago vdot crews finished this problem in centreville as we showed you the crooked lane stripes from chopper 4 yesterday morning on i-66 near route 29. vdot says brand new stripes were laid last week and they apparently peeled off the road there. crews spent the night replacing them so there should not be any problems this morning.

king street in alexandria is back open this morning following a water main break. overnight crews shut down a section between diagonal road and west street that's near the king street metro station. once again, everything is back open to traffic. and speaking of traffic, news4's melissa mollet is watching for any other issues to slow you down on the morning drive in your first 4 traffic. melissa, good morning. >> nice to know the two issues we dealt with earlier this morning are out of the way. here's a live picture of centreville. that major issue yesterday, those wiggly lines, you can sort of see things straighten out. 66 at 29 in centreville, no issues there. that's a good thing. taking a look in montgomery county, 270, top of the beltway, no problems. maryland near 95, looking good. vw parkway, no issues there. a wider look at the beltway, everything is moving right along inner loop and outer loop. wouldn't it be nice if it could stay that way for us, maybe until about noon tomorrow? 270 at falls road is moving

along. i'm back in ten minutes. see you at 6:11. >> i won't hold my breath. thank you. we are just an hour away from bems beginning to ring in prince george's county. we have been talking about it all morning. it's the first day of school. buses are rolling out and heading to pick up your students right now. news4's megan mcgrath is live in upper marlboro with how drivers are getting ready for students. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, take a look behind me here, you can see we've got a driver right here just going over their bus, basically, making sure the lights work. he just revved his engine a moment ago and is getting ready to leave the bus lot here. we have seen some of the buses starting to leave to go and pick up those children this morning. it's the first day of school here at prince george's county. you can perhaps hear the alarm clocks going off and the groaning of children right now as they get ready to head off to class. now, a little while ago i spoke to a bus driver who has been driving for 36 years. this year, however, she's got a

new route but she says she's ready. >> new bus, new kids, so i'll have to adjust. we did a dry-run yesterday so we know exactly where we're going. so it's going to be easy today. >> reporter: so some new things this year, some of the buses have cameras designed to catch people who go around the buses as they are picking up children. there's a new elementary school in hyattsville, new programs and an expansion of pre-k. here's something kind of important, i asked the ceo of schools, kevin maxwell, about staffing levels. he said they are about 95% filled but do have a critical shortage in terms of teachers in some areas. he says they have substitutes in place, they are ready to go, but they are looking for teachers in some areas. i'm going to talk to kevin maxwell live coming up next half hour. back to you in the studio. >> see you then, megan. 6:04. the maryland governor martin o'malley is going back to school

today as well serving lunch at touring the new edward m. elementary school in hyattsville. he'll be joined by the ceo dr. kevin maxwell. for all of you heading back to school today, we want to see your smiling faces out there. send us your pictures using the hash tag show us your scholars. and 6:05 is your time right now. prince william county police have finished their door-to-door search for a man who shot someone in the face outside of the mcdonald's. the man shot is expected to survive. here are the two suspects still out there. police released their photos overnight. police say jamie boyer on the left is an accomplice and dewayne williams on the right fired the gun. this happened on wood boulevard

in woridge. prosecutors are not close to finished for questioning bob mcdonnell who will be back on the stand in rich homond in a f hourom now. the two say their marriage was falling apart and they couldn't have conspired to swap for $150,000 in bribes. the prosecutors pointed out the two vacationed once a month together for over two years. if convicted they could face time in prison. and our reporters are in richmond following the details of the trial. you can hear the full report coming up today beginning at 4:00 p.m. today the d.c. council will hold a hearing about expanding a csx tunnel under the southeast or southwest freeway. this applies to the virginia avenue tunnel. the council asked vdot to postpone the decision on the expansion until september. people living in the area don't

welcome back. here's a startingle new study about smoking. more than a quarter american teens who never spoked a cigarette have used e-cigarettes

in the past year. that is according to the cdc. the numbers are concerning because other studies show minors who use the almost twice begin smoking conventional cigarettes. do you ever wake up with sort of a drunken feeling of confusion? doctors say you may be experiencing something called sleep drunkenness. there's a new study showing 1 in 12 wake up disoriented once a week. the episodes were more common among those with major depression, anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder. one of the dangers is people can become violent if confused. apparently there's no real treatment for this condition, sleep drunkenness. it's kind of rough to deal with. >> it is tough on our schedule. it is 6:11. we are talking about weather and a beautiful start to your day. kids are heading back to school in prince george's county.

we've seen a couple roll out already. kevin maxwell will join megan mcgrath to talk about the changes in schools there coming up in 15 minutes. right now pepco is under a restraining order from a group of homeowners in the potomac because of trees in the openwne yards that are in danger of the power lines and need to come down. the neighbors say that's not okay. >> when you look at the documents, it doesn't say pepco can come into your yard and chop down the trees any time they want. >> pepco says they bought the right to cut down the trees back in the 1950s. one homeowner stood in front of pepco crews to keep them from cutting down his tree. hundreds of people now focused on finding solutions after the deadly shooting of michael brown in ferguson, missouri. police made no arrests overnight. last night local and national activists held a town hall about race, cultural and community

across the country. more than 4,000 people attended the funeral service for michael brown yesterday. peaceful protests turned into violent episodes with police two weeks ago after the unarmed man was shot to death by a ferguson police officer. a legal defense fund for the officer who shot brown is already raising more than a quarter million dollars. officers from the anne arundel police department are expressing shock over the donation from their police union. in a letter to the county's fraternal order of police, a group of african-american officers called the donation to officer darren wilson noble lacking regard for minorities in the department. they also write, quote, the situation has the chance to get worse if it's discovered that officer wilson acted improperly. the bottom line is we don't know all the facts and this is too sensitive of a community issue to make an early judgment. today we could learn the identity of the soldier who shot and killed herself in fort lee. the base south of richmond went on lockdown yesterday morning after the soldier barricaded

herself in an office building. the army spokesperson says the soldier turned the gun on herself as officials tried to negotiate with her. the army says she was a sergeant first class who had served for 14 years. no one else was hurt. we have new details about three sex assaults in just five days that may be linked to the same man. d.c. police say the attacker left his chicago bulls cap at one of the crime scenes that you can see there. all the attacks happened in the mount pleasant neighborhood northwest d.c. one victim was also stabbed. now in each attack the woman was walking alone between 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning. if you have any information, call d.c. police. right now takoma park police need your help looking for a missing man. take a look now, they say 21-year-old david pride seen here was last seen at the montgomery crisis center. if you recognize him, call takoma park police. and today the democrat running to become the next governor will get high-profile help. vice president joe biden will attend a georgetown fund-raiser

for anthony brown around lunchtime. according to "the washington post," lit snag brown between $300,000 and $350,000. there are only going to be 25 people there. brown is humbled by the support. he'll face republican larry h hogue in the november election. and the redskins will make their final cut this afternoon. and many will learn if the starters will play in the pre-season game on thursday. >> good morning, guys. the redskins back on the practice field later today in a big decision looming. will the head coach jay grudan play robert griffin iii and the starting offense in the preseason finale against the bucs? normally startering don't play in the fourth preseason game, but with the struggle in the offense this preseason, they could use the exthat work ahead of the season opener on houston

the bahamas. the category 1 hurricane with 75-mile-an-hour winds making it up to 80 to 90-mile-an-hour winds. by wednesday into thursday, tomorrow and thursday could be some rip currents at the beaches with big waves. stays well off the coast, off the new england coast moving off to the end of the week. for this afternoon, it is a glorious summer day. low humidity. highs reaching the mid-80s. mid-afternoon, quite a warming from where we are right now in the 50s and 60s. and then during the day tomorrow, the morning rather cool but not as cool as this morning, the low 60s tomorrow morning. soaring to the low 90s tomorrow afternoon. and a little more humid. then it will turn a bit less humid again for a couple days on thursday and friday. into the labor day weekend, our next chance of rain not until labor day itself. great weather at the beaches on saturday and sunday. highs away from the waters up near 90. right at the beach in the 70s to near 80. labor day looks like the next chance for rain, maybe scattered

storms monday afternoon with highs right around 90 degrees. a look at the roller coaster right here over the next 24 hours in the next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:31. see you then, thank you. a florida man is recovering after being bitten by a 9-foot crocodile. this happened sunday morni in a miami suburb when a man and woman were swimming in a shallow river behind a house. police say they were jumping in and out of the water when the crocodile came upon them. the woman was bit in the shoulder and the man was bit several times in the hand, the harm and shoulder. both are expected to be okay. you just, in miami, you just have to be careful. you just have to expect that. a 9-foot crocodile in the back of the house, not in the ocean. this morning hollywood is celebrating the best and brightest stars. >> the 2014 primetime emmys took on a more serious tone to remember those actors lost this year.

there was a touching tribute to robin williams who took his life earlier this month. williams' good friend and fellow comedian billy crystal called him, quote, the brightest star. >> the heavens are so far away from us now, the beautiful light will continue to shine on us forever. and the glow will be so bright, it will warm your heart. it will make your eyes glisten. and you will think to yourselves, robin williams, what a concept. >> the academy also paid tribute to other artists who passed away in the past year, including paul walker, phillip seymour hoffman and james garner. you can see more coverage of the emmys throughout the day on "news4 today" and on the "today" show. a lot of touching tributes there last night for so many people. and you can't ignore the fact it was a huge show. it was a celebration of some of the best in television. a lot of folks who we knew would win won and some surprises, too.

welcome back. a lot of children are about to head out the door as tens of thousands of kids head back to school today. we have crews at two schools in prince george's county right now for a look at the changes in store for students when they arrive in class. and news4's megan mcgrath will talk to school ceo kevin maxwell in about a minute. but first, we want you to know the conditions your kid

will be dealing with as they wait for the bus this morning. >> we'll see some wild temperatures swing over the next 24 hours or so storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here with what you should be getting yourself ready for this morning, tom? we'll have thermometer whiplash over the next 24 hours. up and down we go. we are down right now with much of the region in the 50s under a clear sky with low humidity. we don't have the fog around like we did yesterday. just maybe a few whisps of fog over the open fields in the rural areas. shenandoah valley, 52. front royal, winchester, mid-50s there. closer to washington, nearby suburbs hovering right around 60 degrees. and that includes prince george's county where it is back to school there for college park and upper marlboro and two camp springs. and fairfax county is near 60 degrees. much of the rest of northern virginia, upper 50s. prince william, hovering in the mid to upper 50s.

as is culpeper, southern maryland, st. mary's now in the upper 50s to near 60 there as well. a little bit of haze in the air, but overall very dry. there's the capitol. we'll soar later today. there goes the roller coaster up into the 80s by mid-afternoon. then down we go tonight overnight. and by this time tomorrow morning, 7:00 to 8:00, right back down to the low 60s. then it will soar to near 90 tomorrow afternoon. so a big change coming our way. your back-to-school forecast for this tuesday is coming up in the next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:41. breaking news heading into the city with a crash on 395 northbound at 14th street bridge. you can see this police response taking up two left lanes. everybody is squeezing by on the right. i just spoke to police who say it could be some time before this is out of the way. probably through the 7:00 hour. a wider look at things, we are looking good with the exception of the big slowdown coming across the bridge into the city.

270 southbound, a little bit of red, but it usually looks that way headed out of frederick. kind of opens up a bit and gets a little slow again heading into montgomery village. taking a look at 66 and 95, we are looking pretty good this morning. a live look at the beltway at river road, and then 66 east between 495 and gw parkway, 13 minutes. 95 north, quantico to the beltway is 33 minutes. running pretty well there. at 6:32, we are less than an hour away from bells ringing in prince george's public schools. and we've been talking about it all morning, the first day of schools with buses rolling out to head to pick up students as we speak. megan mcgrath is live in upper marlboro with the chief executive of schools with how the school year is shaping up. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this bus lot was packed filled with buses early this morning. it's starting to clear out. many of the buses already out on the roadway picking up the kids. of course, this is the first day of school in prince george's

county. i'm joined by ceo of schools, kevin maxwell. first day, are you all ready? >> we are absolutely ready. we were 95% staffed a week ago. and we have substitutes for the classrooms that we didn't have a hired teacher in place yet for, but we are still hiring. we are still taking a look in the high shortage areas like special education, some of our tougher sciences, languages, looking for the last handful of people that we can use. but we are pretty happy with 95%. >> reporter: talk about what's new this year, you have a new school? >> we have a brand new school in hyattsville. a beautiful school. i was there about ten days ago or so. and it is just a wonderful school with a green roof, all kinds of environmental pieces in it, the art theme. so it really is a cool school. then we have some spanish-immersion programs, we

have new aeronautics programs at the high school, and some new programs going on and we are really excited about it. >> reporter: thank you so much for joing us this morning. and just to mention to folks who are getting up and heading out to work, keep in mind, the kiddos are out there in full force today. so as you make your way into work, keep an eye out for them on the roadways walking to school. in some cases they will be at bus stops. be careful. >> megan mcgrath live for us in upper marlboro. thank you. you may be eating breakfast and soon more than 240,000 children in maryland will be eating it for free. according to "the washington post," the maryland departme of education awarded nearly $7 million to the maryland meals for achievement program. that program provides free breakfast for the kids. more than 150 schools in our area take part in it. and just in montgomery and prince george's county, state leaders say students who eat breakfast score higher on tests

friday. new this morning, we are learning a former fbi director was seriously hurt in a crash. police say louis freed suffered serious injuries when driving his vehicle off the road. this happened last night in a small town in vermont. his name was in the high-profile jerry sandusky case. in 2011 penn state was hired to handle the child sex abuse complaints involving the former assistant football coach. the crash is under investigation. and listen up, gmail users, your e-mail could be at risk. experts identify a new weakness. hackers access accounts with a 92% success rate and their method works on windows, ios and android operating systems. the attack relies on downloading a malicious app. added security. the feature now required in one state that could help to keep

welcome back at 6:40. a united airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in chicago after two passengers fought over a device to stop the seat from reclining. take a look at the pictures of the gadget called a knee defender. you fasten it to the tray in front of you to keep the person in front of you from reclining in his/her seat. over the weekend a woman flew water at the man for using the device on a four-hour flight

in northwest. d.c. public schools say the 17 and 19-year-old students were not students of coolidge. the teens are expected to be okay. parents were upset about the double stabbing. >> this is not acceptable. this is unacceptable. this should start at home with some home training. >> sources tell news4 the two initially refused to tell what led up to the stabbings. and many are still working to clean up after last weekend's earthquake at this mobile home park in napa valley. three homes were destroyed by the fire that followed. those whose homes survived have to get water from neighbors swimming pools. the salvation army is helping to bring neighbors meals as they work to get back on their feet. the napa valley was the epicenter for the 6.0 quake that hit sunday morning. and as people continue to clean up this morning, there are calls for a warning system for future earthquakes.

california senator dianne feinstein says there needs to be a statewide system to alert that a quake is about to happen. that way people can duck for cover and get away from the windows. feinstein suggests modeling a california quake activity alert system after the ones in mexico and japan. early estimates say that the earthquake caused a billion dollars in damage. 11 minutes before the hour now and right now both of the northern virginia bureau reporters are in richmond where bob mcdonnell will be back on the stand today. the former virginia governor will answer questions from prosecutors who are attacking his defense against corruption. mcdonnell says his failing marriage with maureen kept them from conspiring to exchange for political gifts. prosecutors point out they vacationed more than a dozen times back then. stay updated on the latest by following the latest on twitter. you'll also have full reports later today on "news4 today" between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. there's a new way to protect your cell phone from thieves.

vdot says brand new stripes that were laid down last week peeled off the road creating all the squiggly lines you see there. crews spent the night replacing them so there should not be any problems this morning, but melissa is on it. we'll let you know how things are moving. starting today veterans who received purple hearts can park closer to the entrance of st. mary's government center. leaders are installing special signs there. 50 will be installed at the county-owned facilities. purple hearts are given to soldiers hurt while serving in the military. today the d.c. council will hold a hearing about expanding a csx tunnel under the southeast freeway. this applies to the virginia avenue tunnel. the council asked vdot to postpone the decision until september. people living in the area don't want the expansion because of the long-term construction and pollution. the tunnel needs to be updated to better serve the area. the meeting begins at 11:30 at the d.c. council chamber this
