i'm eun yang in for barbara harrison. massachusetts air national guard fighter jet crashed near deer field, virginia in augusta county. first responders are on the right to the crash site. a neighbor says she can see the smoke about two miles away. the plane was on its way to new orleans from massachusetts when it crashed. at this point, it is not clear what caused the plane to crash or whether the pilot safely ejected. stay with news 4 for any updates. let's go now to aaron gilchrist, he has more on the freed american skrourn jost >> he a short news conference. he returned home after two years being held captive in syria. and today, he came out and talked about how overwhelmed he was by the amountf effort that went into securing his relief. take a listen to what else he had to say. >> i'm overwhelmed by one other

students were able to walk into the school. and take a look at this car fire in fairfax county. you can see the heavy smoke and flames there slowed down drivers on the southbou lanes of 95 past the fairfax county parkway in newington. no word on whether anyone was hurt or what led to that car fire. crews cleared the scene just before 9:00 this morning. let's check back in with aaron gilchrist. he has news you you need to know before the holiday weekend. expect a little have a company if you're planning to do traveling for the long holiday weekend. aaa out with their travel forecast. 842,000 people from metro d.c. expected to travel 50 miles or more away from home, up a little bit over last year. most of us will travel by car and almost 8% will hop on a plane for the labor day weekend. now, this increase in the number of people traveling is farley small. but it's actually the highest number of holid travelers from

virginia. this morning aic lanh opened from ples answa valley road to stone cross boulevard. tomorrow the rest of the project will open. megan mcgrath has more. >> reporter: this stretch of route 50 in chantilly has been a choke point for quite a while, only two lanes of traffic and things got even worse once they started on the widening project. well, there was se good news this morning just a little bit before 5:30, they opened the new third lane of traffic. and as you can see, things are slowing very, very well here this morning. this is just phase one. they will open another section, another piece of the third lane, in time for tomorrow morning's rush hour. that will happen between poland road and pleasant valley. and they hope to have that open a little bit before 5:00 in the morning. the idea here is that this third lane will help with congestion through the area. they're trying to get everything open now in time for the start

welcome back. today we could learn how a shoot suspect in woodbridge and his alleged victim knew each other. dewayne williams is sitting in jail right now. only our cameras were rolling when police arrested the 28-year-old in dumfries. police say williams shot a man in the head monday night in a mcdonald's on dale boulevard. the victim survived. williams was caught yesterday hiding in barbara wolf's backyard. at first she g he was a beaver so she went outside to shoo him away. >> i came around here and saw the tail end starting to run up there of something. i wasn't sure what. and when i got here, i could see

believed to be captured by isis and held hostage since last year. our government and her family don't want her name and face out there, they don't want her identified becaus they're concerned about her safety. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. in a couple of hours, governor mcauliffe will sign bills protecting immigrants. many latin americans seek advice from notaries, but they have been fraudulently charging millions for misleading advice. louisiana governor bobby jindal plans to sue the federal government over common core education standards. those are math and english benchmarks describing what students should kw after completing each grade. the federal lawsuit accuses the obama administration of illegally using federal grant money to force states to adopt those standards. jindal says the move violates

the constitution because the feds would be meddling in stated indication policy. right now an important message as your kids head back to school. teens and distracted driving do not mix. in a new report from the governor's highwa safety administration, list at i is keeping your teen's eyes off the road. aaron gi aar aar gilchrist has what officials this our area are doing to protect young drivers. >> 44 states including our area have banned texting and driving. that's especially important now as kids go back to school. in d.c. and in maryland, you can't even talk on a handheld device. virginia takes it a step further targeting teens. if you're younger than 18, you can only have per in the car who is not a relative to cut down on the distractions. now, other states are getting a bit more creative here. in california, teens are not allowed to use vo act ifivated technology. new york is working on a law that says if you're caught using a phone i said will the wheel just once, your license will be suspended for four months.

i'm aaron gilchrist at the live desk. we have breaking news out of woodbridge. we've learned a 20 month old girl has drowned in a family pool. apparently this happened yesterday afternoon on ohio avenue in woodbridge. the family thought the little girl had been playing inside the house, said they lost track of her. when they went outside, they discoveredl her the pool and th

little girl died at the hospital a short time later. they believe this was simply a tragic accident. back to you. well, she is at it again. a serial stowaway was arrested again at a phoenix airport. police took marilyn hartman into custody yesterday after she was spotted near baggage claim without a ticket. she was arrested twice last month after boarding a flight from san jose to los angeles. and days later, she was spotted wandering around l.a.x. without a ticket. changes are coming to it a very popular travel website. american airlines is no long every listing flights on orbitz.com. the two sides were unable to reach a long term contract agreement. u.s. airways which is opened by americans will ben pulling flights september 1st. corporations can use orbitz, but individual travelers have to go to the company websites.

there is a 15-year-old tennis player at the u.s. open making everyone take notice. she won in a stunning upset. the last time someone her age did that was in 1996. and she wn'mun she beat the woman ranked 13th in the world and the 15-year-old is ranked 1208.

effect. students in fairfax county go back to schoolwee but today, we're getting a look at the first high rise elementary school in the district. bill bill's up bailey's upper elementary. and kristen wrigh took a tour and she's live with a preview. how does it look? >> reporter: it's beautiful. it really is. the most striking thing is actually the outside. we want you to take a close look. it looks like a traditional office building on the outside. it's five stories, it's brick. but wait, you have to see the inside. it is so not an office building. this is one of the science labs. it is so modern. verype so much natural l comes in.

it's 1001 square feet, the capacity is to hold 795 students, about 700 will attend this year. now, instead of traditional stairwell, each floor has really colorful carpeted stairs with what they're calling learning pods. these spaces are used for group learning. the district is excited about that. they say that this building will so much a major problem they had with overcrowding and that this is a much better situation. >> we had a rob wiprob overcrowding for seven years. we had students in so many trailers, 19 trailers. we had a problem we needed to fix. >> reporter: now, th campus, bailey's upper elementary school, will ho students this grades three through five while preschool through se graders will stay at the other, the

so if you hate exercising, you can blame your brain. scientists have pinpointed reenlg och regi o the brain responsible for exercise motivation. it also controls your mood. they're hoping to develop more effective treatments for depression. going ba to school can make kids anxious. and for some, it can lead to behavioral changes or even refusing to go all together. dr. joshua is here with a look at what parts can do to help. good morning. how can parents tell the difference? some kids get nervous about first day of school. but when do you realize it's something more than just first day jitters? >> i think what you should expect for a lot of kids is

things like difful sleeping the first few nights before going for school, t few days, maybe complaints of stomachache stomachaes the expected. but if your child is throwing a major temper tantrum, outright refusing to go to school, spending the majority of the day in the nurse's office, these are indications that it's gone beyond that and time to at that time next stkeexsteps. >> so how does a parent deal with this sort of anxiety? >> first thing is they just need to make their efforts in understanding exa wt ei child is experiencing. don't try to reassure them, don't minimize it, just listen. there is a great power in the child just feeling like they're being heard and understood. if you want to take it to the next level, i suggest saying do you want me to give you advice, some of my thoughts? because even little kids, nobody really wants unsolicited advice.

all they will do when they start h hearing, they winkl the reanshyhaot case. so first get their permission and then provide reasonable guidance if they're open to it. >> and if your child refuses t go, what happens? >> this is a psychiatric emergency. the main reason is because when kids refuse on go to school, the longer they stay out of school, the longer they will stay out of school and the harder it is to get them back. so you want to jump on this problem absolutely right away. you want to contact the school. talk to the guidance counselor. do not give in. you don't want to say, okay, look, maybe tomorr will be a little better, we'll let you stay home today. you really also want to understand what is driving this. so typically with young kids, elementary school age, it's separation anxiety. they're worry that had something bad will happen to their

parents. middle school, it's typically bullying. and high school, typically social anxiety. so keep that in mind. of course that's not 100% rule. but these are general trends that you will typically see and that can guide some questions that you ask your child. >> so different things at different stages. at what point to you need to seek professional help? >> absolutely if your child is refusing to go, you should seek guidance at least of the guidance counselor and then they can refer to you somebody if they think that's necessary. if your child is really struggling, they're vomiting before school, you're seeing a lot of behavioral changess thei personality, not socializing, trust your gut. parents know their kid. if they're seeing their child not be savin themselves, it's gone on for more than a couple week, time to seek help. >> doctor, thanks for the great advice. the crowd turned out for the opening of a new maryland

salmon. >> so a variety osh that's good to know. >> it's the end of summer, so traditionally it'a rather zesty sauce. usually citrus based. as long as there is aciddy. so what i did is i put sherry vinegar, couldpepper de er and thth easiest dish. so i'll put one more slice. just a little bit of score salt to start. and these are super hot chilies. >> i like spicy. >> they are hot. >> spicier than a jalapeno.

>> they are. a little salt and sugar and quickly marinate it. this is rice vinegar, salt and sugar. that's it. let them sit for about 20 minutes so they soften just a little bit. >> and take out s t stenk stif pepper? >> absolutely not. but you can take the seeds out and that will make it less spicy. so this is traditional, tomato, could you consumer, sherry vinegar, olive oil. and a lot of chopped chives. >> whatever veggies you have, you can make a gazpacho. >> i think you you want to have tomatoes and cucumber, but you could make a watermelon gazpa o zp yuon on to the fish. very simple. and we will let it sit on it for
