labor day weekend is here before you hit the road find out what you need to know to avoid traffic delays on your weekend road trip. and we have a health alert for you this morning. montgomery public schools are warning you about new cases of whooping cough. what schools are affected and who's at risk. but first a good morning to you. i'm angie goff. >> and i'm richard jordan.

>> we want to go to amelia siegel for your morning forecast. looks like summer a making a comeback. >> yeah. we're going to notice increasing humidity. and talk about high temperatures in the 90s. today the weather having a low impact on your day. more clouds than we had around yesterday. and you'll notice by the afternoon hours the humidity in the air. we're looking at partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies throughout the day today. a little bit more sunshine for the afternoon hours. today it will be the most comfortable of the three days this holiday weekend. for tomorrow, hot and humid with some afternoon and evening rain and thunderstorms. for labor day, a few more thunderstorms in the forecast. coming up i'm going to have the timing when you'll likely be dealing with rain on sunday when you could be dealing with rain on labor day. >> thank you ameliamelia. in the last half hour we learned three people are expected to survive after they

were in this serious crash overnight. this happened in montgomery county at the intersection of mcguff avenue. the car that was involved there very badly damaged. the people in the car were taken to different trauma units. stay with news4 for updates throughout the morning. and right now labor day travel is in full swing. if you are planning on leaving today, you should get a move on to avoid the rush. let's get a look at traffic right now on the chesapeake bay bridge. traffic is not very heavy. officials expecting 50,000 cars and trucks to cross this bridge alone. and to avoid the backups like this one, experts say the best time to leave town will be this morning before 7:00 a.m. so you've got just under an hour. and sunday before 10:00 a.m. aaa says travelers may want to cut their trip short to beat the thunderstorms which could roll in through monday afternoon. >> most of us think they can handle the rain, but most

accidents in washington metro area that are weather related are in rainfall. >> you can also see what the roads look like before you head out the door. we have cameras throughout the region. check them out live any time of day by clicking on the traffic tab on our home page. this morning power is back for hundreds of people in alexandr alexandria. check it out. you can see the poles snapped bringing down lots of wires. it's not clear how it happened. they said the poles were not hit by a car and weather wasn't a factor. but it is reopen this morning. school has just started and already there's a serious sickness going around montgomery county schools. jackie bensen tells us how you can keep your kids safe from whooping cough. >> reporter: this video shows the effect of whooping cough. this letter was sent to four

schools informing them a dozen kids have been found to have the contagious disease. it was found at robert frost middle school, julius west middle school, and cabin john, and cold spring elementary. plus two private schools. the illness can be traced to a science camp. >> well, i had no idea. i'm really very surprised to hear it especially at the beginning of the school year. >> reporter: the symptoms of whooping cough include a runny nose, cough that lingers then worsens, and the whooping sound. it's treated with antibiotics. jackie bensen, news4 today. >> right now doctors are seeing the biggest spike in whooping cough since the 1940s when a vaccine was first made against

it. some new strains of whooping cough have been resistant to those vaccines. d.c. police are reversing a controversial policy to put detectives on street duty. the first would pull them from their cases one week a month. now the chief says detectives from individual districts will be included. but other investigating crimes will still be assigned to street duty. and some say the program could interfere with investigations. the police union has not commented on the changes. today separate events are planned in honor of the unarmed teen killed by a police officer in ferguson, missouri. first after noon, a prayer will take place at the mg memorial. and later at 7:00 p.m. there will be a rally for police reforms in front of union station.

that's going to be followed by a march down h street. if you are heading downtown today, some metro stations are closed on the red line. first 4 traffic gives us the full rundown on the rails. >> metro is not taking a break from track work this holiday weekend. there are some station closures you should know about. on the red line two stations are closing for the weekend. the bethesda and medical center stations shutdown and closed through monday. orange and silver line trains will run every ten minutes. green line trains will run every 15 minutes. and blue and yellow lines will operate normally. monday metro will operate on a sunday schedule. stations open at 7:00 in the morning and then shut down at midnight. back to you. >> thanks, melissa. two local areas are blasting back to the past this weekend in montgomery county. costume volunteers are commemorating the war of 1812.

james madison fled to brookville as the british stormed the capital. the town will re-enact president madison's ride into town. then tomorrow the town hosted 200 anniversary for the descendents of people who were there. today in alexandria, a memorial will honor all of those who died in service to their country. the ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. recently maryland did award $5.5 million in grants for these celebrations for more research on a war they say was forgotten. one that nobody knows about that looks like they're remembering it today. >> great events. plenty of time to check them out. >> and some great weather. that's going to come up. still ahead on news4 today, retail health clinics. >> we'll look at one retailer that's adding a health clinic in

george washington university and the national gallery of art now. today's farewell hug begins at 2:00 p.m. on 17th street near the white house. if you want to ditch that student loan debt, there are a number of things you can do. >> news4 consumer reporter erika gonzalez shars what you should do to attack the debt one payment at a time. >> reporter: do you think it's an amount you think you'll pay off in this lifetime? >> i think it will be. i am confident that that will happen. in how many years? that's the bigger question, i think. >> reporter: adela is just one of many students we talked to about student debt and lots of it. she currently owes $80,000. many students like her say it can be hard to focus on classes at hand knowing how much of the red you're in and counting. we sought the expertise of kiplinger's personal finance to show you how to reduce your student loan debt as fast as possible. first, you've got to know what

you owe. you want to use the national student loan data system to find out where all of your federal loans are and get them in order. then pick a payment plan. just remember the longer that you make the plan for, the more interest you're going to pay. the best way is to give a fixed amount every month or a graduated plan where you build up the amount over the ten years. and finally save for a sizable drop in the bucket. once you make at least the minimum payment, put a few dollars aside to make a big payment. you make a dent in the debt and you buy yourself a little cushion room too. erika gonzalez, news4. >> this year's college graduating class is walking away with the highest student loan debt ever. an average of about $33,000 and it's only going up from there. hard to believe. >> i know. we're all feeling it, i think. the college debt thing. but there's one thing my father

heads up. stay away from the water in rock creek park. more than 1200 gallons of raw waste spilled into rock creek. a backed up sewer line overflowed. everyone is now being told to avoid the water in rock creek south of the national zoo to georgetown. they are working to clean up the spill. metro transit police now say they believe two men are behind a series of flashings on the metro. after our reports, more victims came forward to complain about the crime. we're told it's often underreported. we spoke to one victim who didn't want to show her face. >> i looked up to check what station i was on. when i looked back down to what i was watching and then i looked over and i saw, you know, his genitals were out. >> well, take a look. this is one of the men police believe exposed himself to women on the train.

if you think you recognize him, please call police. in news for your health this morning, as the country deals with a big shortage of doctors and the high cost of care, more of you are turning to those quick care clinics. now walmart is joining the mix saying it wants to be a primary health care provider. dr. nancy snyderman tells us why parents should be cautious. >> reporter: in this hectic world you may feel you're on call 24/7, but your doctor is not. >> i work in the health department and i see people every day that don't have access to medical care. >> reporter: it's that frustration retailers are banking on as more are opening low-cost, in-store medical clinics. and today america's biggest retailer walmart opened two new clinics in georgia. making a move to deliver primary care to its 5,000 u.s. stores. >> walmart is focused on opening

these clinics in rural areas where there isn't as much access to care. >> reporter: with walk-in visits costing patients and their insurance companies just $40, analysts say these clinics could be a game changer. >> these could have ripple effects and also challenge hospitals and doctors to reconsider their pricing as well. >> reporter: there are merely 2,000 retail clinics in stores like target, walgreens, and cvs. they are staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. most are open seven days a week and have evening hours. they are used for treating common colds and flu, treating some infections, minor sprains, and vaccinations. experts caution retail clinics should not be the primary source for primary care. especially for children. >> we don't recommend that parents take children under the age of 18 months to a retail clinic. >> reporter: when you do go to a retail clinic, here's what you

need to know. bring a list of medications and get a complete record of your visit. if possible, ask the clinic to send your doctor a report. >> and that was dr. nancy snyderman reporting. walmart is launching the pilot program in three states that denied expand medicaid. those states also had a high concentration of uninsured residents. if you didn't buy your labor day supply yet, get ready for a bigger price tag. pork is higher priced this year. you'll pay 10% more for it than last year. steaks also more expensive. and hot dogs up 7% as well. chicken is the winner here. 3% more expensive. i guess if you want to save the money, got to eat the bird. >> prices going up. temperatures going up as well. quite the labor day we have. >> heat and humidity. it's all returning. >> absolutely. summer unofficially comes to a close, the temperatures, it's

not going to feel like that. >> doesn't make sense, does it in. >> absolutely not. notice how many 90s there are when you see the temperatures. it will also be humid. with the heat and humidity comes shower and thunderstorm chances. is this holiday weekend going to be a washout? absolutely not, but there are some rain chances in the forecast. starting tomorrow, you could be dealing with a few afternoon thunderstorms but it's really looking like rain will hold off until the evening and overnight hours. so you can make it through at least your entire sunday all dry. some rain late during the afternoon hours. the threat of severe weather this weekend is quite low. however, any thunderstorm or cell we do see moving through the area could contain some heavy rain. especially later in the day on sunday. again, talking about our fourth heat wave of the year. now, temperatures right now for the most part are in the 60s. 66 in camp springs, 64 in

frederick. washington one of the more milder locations coming in at 71 right now with plenty of clouds across the area. today mostly cloudy then partly sunny skies. here are the high temperatures in the metro area. for the most part in the mid-80s. 86 for a high today in washington. keeping it dry for those of you in the metro area. a little bit further back as we head to northern virginia, there could be an isolated shower or thunderstorm in parts of louden county today. and well down south around fredricksburg but only a 10% chance of that happening. the best chance will be those of you in the mountain areas. where you have a 30% chance of dealing with the late-day shower or thunderstorm. most of us going through our saturday dry. if you're at the football game today, kickoff at 3:30. partly sunny cskies. it will be humid with temperatures in the mid-80s.

future weather walking you throughout the later part of today. notice that thunderstorm threat around the i-81 corridor. most of us are dry. here we are at midnight. as we work our way throughout the day tomorrow, this is sunday. it's a dry start. stopping it at the midday hours, we're still dry across the area. here we are at 3:00 in the afternoon. notice that rain threat still for the most part west of the d.c. metro area. once the sun starts to go down around 7:00, 8:00 p.m., that threat enters the d.c. metro area. again some heavy rain is possible. otherwise it's hot and humid. a high temperature of 92. rain mainly late in the day. for monday a high temperature of 91 degrees. a shower possible during the morning. into the afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms. you don't want to cancel your outdoor plans, but be ready to move back indoors.

joan rivers' daughter released a statement saying the comedian who is 81 is receiving the best treatment possible right now at mt. sinai hospital in new york city. however, she also said her mom is in serious condition. rivers' heart stopped during a minor procedure at the doctor on thursday morning. today the dog days of summer exhibit is unleashed at the national museum of the marine corps. the event features dogged trained to sniff out bombs and to attack on command. but this is an event for animal

for today we're not talking about any rain really in the forecast, but we are going to notice the heat and humidity increasing throughout the day today. temperature right now in washington at 71 degrees. 68 in college park. 64 for those of you in gaithersburg. plenty of clouds around right now and we'll have mostly cloudy then partly sunny skies throughout the day today. now, the heat wave it doesn't start today. it starts tomorrow. so here's your running forecast. if you're planning on going running during the midday hours. temperatures in the low 70s at 9:00. by noon at the 80-degree mark. the best time to run will be earlier in the day today. heat wave starts tomorrow. with it comes shower and thunderstorm chances. more on that coming up. >> thank you. as many of you hit the roads for the holiday weekend, you'll see more police on the virginia roadways. they are stepping up patrols through monday like here on i-95 in woodbridge.

they are on the lookout for drunk drivers. nine people died in crashes that weekend last year. you want to avoid the heavy traffic this weekend. we're told about some of the best ways you can get around all that holiday traffic. >> we all know of our three big trouble spots around the area, so we're going to try tote get u through. best thing you want to do is if you want to take an at mat, route 1 or bw parkway. either of those check ahead of time to make sure you're not going to get stuck in traffic there. talking about 95 southbound through virginia and alternate if you're coming from d.c. or prince george's county, 301. of course you can take it all the way to richmond. it's longer, but you won't be stuck in traffic. beltway at 270 can get very, very slow. if you're headed north, the best alternate is going to be 355.

rhode island for a fund raiser, the secret service issued a statement saying they asked connecticut state police for a man who had allegedly threatened the president. they said the suspect was driving a blue volkswagen jetta. as concerns about isis continues to grow, metro officers are told to watch out for threats. we are told there are no dangers to the system right now, however, the chief of transit police put out a warning for metro. tension in the middle east is a cause for concern along with the coming anniversary of the september 11th attacks. even though he uk has raised its terror level threat to severe, the u.s. doesn't expect their threat to be raised. they're worried from british extremists in isis. they have the fear 500 citizens have gone to fight in iraq and syria.

everyone is on break for labor day as the jury will not begin to deliberate the case against bob mcdonnell until tuesday. he faces decades in prison if he is found guilty. lawyers gave their closing arguments on thursday. the remarks took up the whole day. prosecutors say mcdonnell and his wife traded political favors for more than $150,000 in gifts from businessman johnny williams. williams' testimony is unreliable, they say. and that the former couple's marriage was too broken for them to conspire together. >> the job they did were terrific. combined the law and facts and emotion of this case. they did a very, very good job. >> and even after the jury receives its instructions, it could be awhile before we hear a verdict. julie carey will be there to

well, this is a very special story that came out of a very scary situation. >> a young father finally met the woman who saved his life after he collapsed in montgomery county. we're told how without her help he never may have met his daughter. >> reporter: he hugged heather vonn kirk for saving him with cpr. >> that she would help a complete stranger, that she would stop and help me who she doesn't know. >> reporter: lu was jogging here in rockville with his 2-year-old son mark in a baby jogger. at the park where he brought his son to play, michael collapsed in cardiac arrest.

she called 911. >> heather, listen -- heather! you need to start doing cpr right now. >> reporter: michael was brought here to the hospital where he lay in a coma. at first he had almost no brain activity. then after ten days miraculously he woke up. his wife mary has been pregnant throughout this ordeal. >> to always think of the memories nathan wouldn't remember with his dad. and this baby potentially never meeting her father was really heart breaking. but, you know, it's a miracle he's alive. and we are just so thankful. >> reporter: michael got to celebrate with birthday cake. >> to know i played any part in him being here on his 32nd birthday and being able to experience his daughter being born, you know, in a few months. i mean, that's nominal. >> really proud that we saved someone's life.

>> reporter: a living legend right here in our area. we've been invited to go along for the ride. step inside the memphis bell and you quickly realize this was not comfy quarters and you had to be brave to be a member. you'll find the cockpit above the nose of the airplane and room below. this plane available to the public to raise awareness about the sacrifices our world war ii vets truly made. now it's go time taxiing out to the ruay. the engines have started. it's starting to get noisy in here. wouldn't you know it we picked a seat with a view. there's no roof to the room that we're in. this is the radio room. full blast and takeoff. 150 miles an hour and you can peek out the roof of the b-17. an incredible sight. we were even able to stick our head out for a second. we moved about the plane just

good saturday morning, everyone. if you're a college football fan it is a great saturday morning for you. maryland kicks off the season against james madison at 3:30 with a new season and conference. this team is excited to finally goat on the field. >> anxious to watch the guys go ut -- out and perform. and get out there and just see what kind of team we're going to be for 2014. >> maryland will be without wide receiver lavern jacobs. they've been suspended for the season by the team after violating the student code of conduct. last season jacobs led the team in receptions. the head coach said in a statement that the players showed poor judgment and failed to uphold the standards of a student athlete at university of maryland. the virginia cavaliers host ucla at noon. up state, navy takes on ohio

state. and down in blacksburg, virginia tech host william & mary. it will be a miracle if anyone makes it off the couch today. hope your saturday is a good one. and some say it is a punishment that fits the crime. last weekend we showed you this video of a man who climbed the brooklyn bridge and started walking on its cables. that man was a russian tourist who was quickly taken into custody. he faced a judge who recommended community service. then suggested cleaning the bridge. it's the second time this summer we've seen a breach at the iconic bridge. last month someone raised two white flags at the top. well, today is the library of congress national book festival. after ten years on the national mall, it is moving inside. it will run from 10:00 this morning to 10:00 tonight inside the washington convention center. authors will be there signing their books. new events this year include a

discussion with writers whose books were made into movies. plus cooking demonstrations by some of the area's top chefs. and starting today you can go to a new exhibit at the national zoo. with these guys here. they're bison. they came here from montana. one is named zora, the other is wilma. the bison is the mascot of both schools. bison are among the animals in the zoo's very first exhibit 125 years ago. the zoo brought them back to honor its birthday this year. so another fun attraction. another large attraction at the zoo. thosguys are big. >> we did want to mention that on benyon road near mcduff avenue, that is where we had a fire this morning. and so we're going to be looking more into that when we bring you the news coming up at 8:30. >> but everyone not injured. that's the good news. >> absolutely. >> talk about our holiday
